Lynas Rare Earths has the cleaner, longer-established ex-China operating footprint. Its mine is in Western Australia and its cracking, leaching and separation operations are in Australia and Malaysia. MP Materials has cut its current direct China exposure sharply, but that change follows substantial historical dependence on China-linked concentrate sales and leaves more transition and execution risk.
There is no single, directly comparable percentage for total China exposure at both companies. A useful comparison separates direct sales, historical customer concentration, mine and processing locations, downstream manufacturing, customer geography and sensitivity to China-linked prices and policy.

What “China exposure” means for a rare-earth stock
China exposure is not one accounting line. A company can avoid operating a mine or refinery in China and still be affected by Chinese customers, Chinese refining capacity, Asian pricing, export controls or demand from manufacturers that operate in China. Comparing MP Materials and Lynas on one percentage would therefore give a false sense of precision.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Exposure dimension | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Direct sales | Revenue from Chinese customers or distributors, and the destination of products sold | Shows immediate commercial dependence, but can change quickly when contracts or shipping routes change |
| Historical concentration | Whether one China-linked buyer represented a large share of revenue in prior periods | Reveals the customer and financing risk a business carried before its current strategy took effect |
| Mine and processing geography | Where ore is mined, cracked, leached, separated and converted into metal or magnets | Determines exposure to Chinese infrastructure, regulation and logistics at each processing stage |
| Downstream maturity | How much value is captured in separated oxides, metals and finished NdFeB magnets | A company selling only concentrate may depend on third-party refiners even if its mine is outside China |
| Customer geography | Where end users and intermediate customers are located | Sales to Japan, South Korea or other Asian markets are outside China but can still be influenced by regional demand and Chinese competition |
| Market and policy sensitivity | Exposure to Chinese prices, export controls, tariffs and excess capacity | Determines how a non-Chinese producer may perform when China changes trade policy or output |
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: Lynas has lower structural direct-China exposure, while MP has reduced its current direct exposure relative to its own recent history.

MP Materials: a sharp change after heavy historical concentration
How concentrated were MP’s China-linked sales?
MP’s filings show that China dependence was material before the company changed its shipping strategy. Its first-quarter 2025 filing says sales of rare-earth concentrate to Shenghe represented approximately 50% of revenue for the three months ended March 31, 2025. The same filing says Shenghe-related concentrate sales represented approximately 70% of revenue for the year ended December 31, 2024.
Those figures describe sales to a named customer, not a complete measure of all economic exposure to China. MP’s 2025 Form 10-K explains that its Materials segment historically sold concentrate primarily to a distributor that typically resold it to refiners in China. The concentration therefore combined customer risk with downstream processing dependence. The percentages are also period-specific: they should not be read as MP’s current or permanent revenue mix.
What changed on April 17, 2025?
On April 17, 2025, MP announced that it had ceased shipments of rare-earth concentrate to China. The company said the decision responded to China’s retaliatory tariffs and export controls. It also described a shift toward processing more material at Mountain Pass in California and selling that output into the United States and allied markets.
At that point, MP said its California refinery was processing nearly half of production, with virtually all of that processed material sold into Japan, South Korea and the United States. This is a major reduction in direct China shipment exposure, but it is a transition measure rather than proof that every part of MP’s supply chain is independent of China. Japan and South Korea are outside China, yet both are part of an Asian rare-earth market whose prices, customers and competing supply can be affected by Chinese policy.
What did MP produce and sell in 2025?
MP’s full-year 2025 results, released in 2026, provide evidence that the company is moving further downstream:

- It produced 2,599 metric tons of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide.
- It sold 1,994 metric tons of NdPr oxide.
- It produced 50,692 metric tons of rare-earth-oxide (REO) equivalent in concentrate.
- It produced its first NdFeB magnets on commercial equipment.
- It identified a planned 10X magnetics facility in Texas as part of its expansion.
The production and sales numbers should be read separately. Producing 2,599 metric tons of NdPr oxide while selling 1,994 metric tons means output and shipments were not identical during the year; inventory, timing and customer qualification can account for the difference. Likewise, concentrate production remains significant even as MP increases oxide and magnet output. The company is still operating a mixed business while it builds a larger U.S. processing and magnet platform.
Where does MP operate?
Mountain Pass in California is the mine and the base for MP’s U.S. processing effort. The company’s Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas, is intended to manufacture magnets. That geography gives MP a mine-to-processing-to-magnet pathway in the United States, but the pathway is being developed in stages rather than representing a long-established, fully scaled chain.

MP’s 2025 Form 10-K says current NdPr oxide and metal sales are primarily to customers in Japan, South Korea and broader Asia. That wording matters: “outside China” and “outside Asia” are not the same thing. A sale to a Japanese or South Korean customer lowers direct China customer exposure, but it does not eliminate regional pricing risk, Chinese competition or dependence on Asian industrial demand.
Why MP still carries transition risk
MP’s strategic reset changes where material is shipped and where more processing occurs, but it does not instantly erase the business conditions that produced the earlier concentration. Investors must assess whether California processing, oxide sales and Texas magnet manufacturing can absorb the volume that once moved through the China-linked distributor.
- Customer replacement risk: A former concentrated buyer may be replaced by several customers, but those customers still need to qualify products and sign durable contracts.
- Ramp-up risk: Commercial magnet production is a different operating challenge from mining or producing concentrate. Yield, quality consistency and equipment utilization affect margins.
- Inventory and timing risk: The gap between NdPr oxide produced and sold in 2025 shows why annual production is not the same as realized customer demand.
- Policy risk: Tariffs and export controls helped trigger the strategy change, and future policy changes could alter the economics again.
- Asian-market risk: Sales to Japan, South Korea and other Asian customers are geographically diversified from China but remain exposed to regional manufacturing cycles.
Lynas Rare Earths: a long-standing mine-to-oxide chain outside China
Where Lynas mines and processes material
Lynas mines rare-earth ore at Mt Weld in Western Australia. Concentrate is processed first at the Kalgoorlie facility in Western Australia, where it is cracked and leached into mixed rare-earth carbonate. The material is then further processed at the Lynas Malaysia plant in Kuantan, Malaysia.

This configuration creates a traceable mine-to-separated-oxide chain with the mine and processing facilities outside China. Lynas describes itself as the world’s only significant producer of separated rare-earth materials outside China, and its U.S.-markets materials describe it as the only commercial producer of separated light and heavy rare-earth oxides outside China. Those descriptions refer to commercial-scale separated materials, not an assertion that every input, customer or market risk is outside China.
What Malaysia does—and does not—mean
Lynas does not process its Mt Weld material in China under the operating configuration described by the company. The separation plant is in Malaysia, while Kalgoorlie handles the initial cracking and leaching step. Malaysia is outside China, but it is still in Asia and is subject to regional logistics, energy, environmental and geopolitical considerations.
Lynas’ Malaysia plant exports separated materials to customers in east Asia, the United States and Europe. The destination mix reduces reliance on a single Chinese buyer, yet it does not make Lynas immune to Chinese prices or Chinese demand. Rare-earth oxides are globally traded commodities, and a large producer in China can influence prices even when a competing producer’s mine and plants are elsewhere.
How far downstream is Lynas?
Lynas’ core distinction is the production of separated materials rather than only mined concentrate. Its FY2025 sustainability report says production of its first two separated heavy-rare-earth products commenced during the year. That expansion means Lynas is a commercial producer of both separated light and heavy rare-earth products outside China, according to the company.
Separated oxides provide more control over customer specifications and reduce dependence on a third-party Chinese refiner. They do not eliminate every downstream dependency: customers may still convert oxides into metals, alloys and magnets elsewhere, and Lynas’ sales remain tied to global industrial demand.

Why Lynas’ footprint is structurally different from MP’s
Lynas built an operating chain outside China before the recent wave of trade restrictions made supply-chain diversification a central investment theme. Mt Weld, Kalgoorlie and Malaysia therefore represent a long-standing configuration rather than a newly redirected flow of concentrate.
That history does not guarantee superior returns. Lynas still faces project execution, plant reliability, environmental compliance, currency, shipping and commodity-price risks. The point is narrower: its direct exposure to Chinese processing and a single China-linked concentrate customer is structurally lower than the exposure MP carried before April 2025.
Side-by-side comparison
| Measure | MP Materials | Lynas Rare Earths |
|---|---|---|
| Historical China-linked revenue | Shenghe-related concentrate sales were approximately 70% of 2024 revenue and approximately 50% of first-quarter 2025 revenue, according to MP’s filings | No equivalent percentage is established in the supplied company information |
| Current direct China shipments | MP announced on April 17, 2025 that it had ceased shipments of rare-earth concentrate to China | Mine and processing locations described by Lynas are outside China |
| Mine location | Mountain Pass, California | Mt Weld, Western Australia |
| Initial processing | California processing at Mountain Pass | Cracking and leaching at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia |
| Separation location | California refinery for NdPr oxide, with expansion underway | Lynas Malaysia in Kuantan, Malaysia |
| Magnet manufacturing | Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas; first NdFeB magnets produced on commercial equipment in 2025 | The supplied information establishes separated oxide production, not a comparable Lynas magnet-manufacturing output figure |
| Recent product metrics | 2,599 metric tons of NdPr oxide produced, 1,994 metric tons sold and 50,692 metric tons of REO concentrate produced in 2025 | First two separated heavy-rare-earth products commenced production during FY2025 |
| Customer geography | Current NdPr oxide and metal sales primarily to Japan, South Korea and broader Asia | Separated materials exported to east Asia, the United States and Europe |
| Main China-related question | Can the new U.S.-centered processing and magnet strategy replace the earlier China-linked concentrate channel? | How much will Chinese pricing and Asian demand affect a supply chain that is physically outside China? |
Which company has the safer ex-China supply chain?
For an investor whose priority is established physical separation from Chinese processing, Lynas is the safer fit on the evidence available. Its mine, cracking and leaching operation, and separation plant are identified in Australia and Malaysia, and it has a multi-region customer base.
For an investor focused on the direction of change, MP offers a different proposition. Its direct China exposure is lower after the April 2025 shipment decision, and its 2025 results show progress from concentrate toward oxide and magnet production. The trade-off is that the new model is less proven at scale and follows a period when a China-linked distributor accounted for approximately half to seven-tenths of revenue, depending on the period measured.
“Safer” should therefore be specified:
- Safer structural footprint: Lynas, because its mine-to-separated-material chain has long operated outside China.
- Largest recent reduction in direct China shipments: MP, because it stopped shipping concentrate to China in April 2025.
- Lower customer-concentration history: Lynas based on the information available; a directly comparable percentage for Lynas is not stated.
- Greater transition upside and execution risk: MP, because California refining and Texas magnet manufacturing are still being scaled.
- Exposure to Asian demand: Both companies, although through different routes. MP sells primarily to customers in Japan, South Korea and broader Asia, while Lynas exports to east Asia as well as the United States and Europe.
Is MP Materials still dependent on China?
MP is no longer described by its April 2025 strategy announcement as shipping rare-earth concentrate to China, so its current direct shipment dependence is lower than it was before that decision. However, “not shipping concentrate to China” is narrower than “having no China exposure.” MP still operates in a market shaped by Chinese supply and prices, sells to Asian customers, and is replacing a historically important channel with newer processing and magnet operations.

The practical test is whether future filings show sustained sales of NdPr oxide, metal and magnets to a diversified customer base, while the share of concentrate revenue continues to fall. Until that pattern is demonstrated over multiple reporting periods, MP is best viewed as a company in transition rather than a fully de-risked ex-China producer.
Does Lynas process rare earths in China?
The operating chain described by Lynas places Mt Weld mining in Western Australia, cracking and leaching at Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, and further processing at Lynas Malaysia in Kuantan. On that basis, Lynas’ stated production of separated materials occurs outside China.
That answer concerns physical processing. Lynas can still be affected by China through global prices, competing supply, customer demand in east Asia and policy changes that alter trade flows. “Outside China” is an operating-location description, not a promise of zero China-linked commercial exposure.

What investors should monitor in future filings
Because the companies report different stages of the value chain, a disciplined comparison should track operating evidence rather than rely on a single headline claim.
For MP Materials
- Revenue share from concentrate versus NdPr oxide, metal and finished magnets.
- Customer concentration and whether Japan, South Korea, the United States and other markets are replacing the former Shenghe-linked channel.
- California refinery utilization, recovery rates and the proportion of production sold rather than merely produced.
- Commercial magnet output from Fort Worth, customer qualification progress and the construction or commissioning status of the planned Texas 10X facility.
- Any new China shipments, China-linked distributors or changes in the company’s description of end-market geography.
For Lynas Rare Earths
- Reliability and throughput at Mt Weld, Kalgoorlie and Lynas Malaysia.
- Volumes and customer acceptance for separated light and heavy rare-earth products.
- Revenue and shipment mix among east Asia, the United States and Europe.
- Dependence on any single customer, region or product even though the processing chain is outside China.
- Exposure to Chinese price movements, regional demand and the costs of operating facilities in Australia and Malaysia.
How to use the comparison in a stock decision
China exposure is only one investment variable. A company can have a cleaner supply chain and still produce poor shareholder returns if prices fall, costs rise, projects are delayed or demand for magnets weakens. Conversely, a company with more transition risk can create value if downstream capacity ramps successfully and customers pay for non-Chinese supply.
Before choosing between the shares, separate three questions:
- What risk are you trying to reduce? If the priority is avoiding Chinese processing, Lynas’ established geography addresses that concern more directly. If the priority is finding a company that has recently redirected sales and is building U.S. magnet capacity, MP is the more obvious transition case.
- What evidence would change your view? For MP, look for recurring oxide and magnet sales, lower customer concentration and successful plant utilization. For Lynas, look for consistent output, broader product coverage and resilient customers across several regions.
- What time horizon matches the risk? MP’s strategy depends on execution over successive reporting periods. Lynas offers a more established footprint, but it remains exposed to commodity cycles and Asian market conditions.
Neither company can accurately be labeled “zero China exposure.” The meaningful distinction is that Lynas has less structural dependence on Chinese operating infrastructure, while MP has made a large and recent effort to reduce direct China sales after a highly concentrated historical model.
