Short answer: the €864 figure was an Italian retailer listing for a 12GB/512GB Motorola Edge 50 Pro, not Motorola’s official European starting price. Motorola later announced European availability from €699, while the phone launched in India from ₹31,999 for 8GB/256GB. The leak highlighted a real regional price gap, but it overstated what shoppers would ultimately pay in Europe.
What exactly was leaked?
A March 31, 2024 report citing Passionategeekz said an Italian retailer had listed the Motorola Edge 50 Pro at €864. The listing identified the 12GB RAM/512GB storage version in the “Black Beauty” finish. The report is available at GizChina.

That was a retailer listing, not a Motorola price announcement. Pre-release listings can contain placeholder figures, early-listing markups, taxes and distribution costs, or a storage tier that is not sold in another country. The €864 amount therefore should not be described as Motorola’s official European MSRP or as a US price. Its approximate dollar equivalent at the time was only a currency conversion.
Why did €864 look so high?
The concern came from the contrast with a reported Indian pre-launch figure of ₹44,999. Readers saw a phone using Qualcomm’s upper-midrange Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 apparently costing much more in Europe than in India. That made the European model look expensive against both its chip class and competing upper-midrange phones.

However, a direct euro-to-rupee conversion is not a valid value comparison. European prices generally include VAT, while taxes and sales conditions differ elsewhere. Import costs, retailer margins, purchasing power, introductory promotions, and—most importantly here—different RAM and storage configurations also affect the price. The Italian listing was 12GB/512GB; the Indian launch model was 8GB/256GB.

Motorola’s announcement confirmed European availability from €699: Motorola News. The reported Indian launch price and configuration are documented in contemporary coverage and the Motorola Edge 50 series reference.
The leak was therefore directionally useful—it warned that European pricing could be much higher than Indian pricing—but it was not a reliable statement of the final European entry price. The reported ₹44,999 Indian figure was also misleading as a guide to what buyers actually paid at launch.

- 4,500mAh battery, 125W wired TurboPower charging and up to 50W wireless charging
- IP68 water and dust resistance

- 50MP autofocus selfie camera
- Android 14 at launch

The compatible 50W wireless charging stand is sold separately. “Up to 50W” also requires suitable Motorola equipment; a generic Qi charger will not necessarily reach that speed.
Was the hardware good enough for the money?
Reasons the price could be justified
- The 144Hz high-resolution pOLED screen was unusually ambitious for an upper-midrange phone.
- 125W wired and 50W wireless charging offered convenience that many rivals lacked.
- IP68 protection added a useful durability feature.
- A dedicated 3x telephoto camera and autofocus ultrawide were stronger than the camera layouts on many similarly priced phones.
- Premium materials, vegan-leather finishes and a lightweight design gave it a more distinctive feel than typical midrange models.
Reasons to be cautious
- The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 sits below flagship chips, so sustained gaming and demanding workloads are not its strongest use case.
- Review summaries reported inconsistent colour reproduction, camera-processing weaknesses and occasional sluggish camera behaviour. That is not the same as saying the cameras are unusable, but buyers seeking consistently processed images should compare alternatives.
- Three OS upgrades and four years of security updates are less generous than support policies on some newer Android competitors.
- At €864, and even in a competitive €699 segment, discounted flagships and faster upper-midrange phones reduced its value advantage.

What the price means in each market
At €864
This would have been a disappointing price for the listed configuration unless the extra storage, a substantial bundle or a later discount changed the calculation. The chipset and software policy did not support treating €864 as an obvious flagship alternative.

At €699
The official European starting price was much more defensible. The display, charging system, IP68 rating and telephoto camera made it distinctive, although performance and camera consistency still prevented a universal “best buy” verdict.
At ₹31,999 or below
The Indian launch price made the hardware package considerably more compelling, especially for shoppers who prioritised fast charging, display quality, water resistance and a real telephoto lens over flagship gaming performance.

Later India price signals and availability
Motorola’s India Edge 50 Pro page displayed an MRP of ₹36,999 and an offer price of ₹27,999 when checked, but it was marked out of stock: Motorola India product page. Motorola’s separate Edge-family page showed the Edge 50 Pro at ₹29,999: Motorola Edge family. These are page-observed offers, not guaranteed nationwide street prices or proof of current stock. Check the final checkout price, seller, warranty and availability before buying.
Bottom line for shoppers checking the old headline
The headline was based on a real €864 Italian listing, but it blurred the difference between a provisional retailer price and an official launch price. The final European starting MSRP was €699, and India launched from ₹31,999 rather than the reported ₹44,999. In practical terms, the Edge 50 Pro was a stronger value when discounted or sold below ₹35,000, a reasonable but competitive proposition at €699, and difficult to recommend at €864.
