More than 4.4 million U.S. consumers were reportedly affected by a 2025 TransUnion cyber incident involving personal information stored in a third-party application. Public reporting and a later federal lawsuit said names and Social Security numbers were among the data involved; some records may also have included dates of birth and other identifying details. Available reporting said credit reports themselves were not accessed or altered, but exposed identity data can still support fraudulent applications, account-takeover attempts, tax fraud and phishing.

What happened
TransUnion said unauthorized access occurred in a third-party application that stored some customer information. A federal complaint later alleged that more than 4.4 million U.S. consumers were affected. The incident should not automatically be described as a compromise of TransUnion’s core credit-report database.

Several reports identified Salesforce as the third-party environment, but that attribution remains a reported or alleged description unless confirmed by a TransUnion incident statement. Other Salesforce-related incidents in 2025 should not be treated as identical to this event.

What information may have been exposed
Available coverage and the lawsuit reported the following categories:
- Names.
- Social Security numbers.
- For some individuals, dates of birth and other identifying information.
Those categories may not apply to every person. The data-elements list in your notification letter is the controlling source for your record.
Information not established as exposed in this incident
Do not assume that complete credit reports, credit scores, bank-account numbers, payment-card numbers, passwords, existing account credentials or medical information were involved unless your personal notice specifically says so. The available evidence does not support a blanket statement that any of those categories were taken.

Were credit reports or scores exposed?
Available reporting said credit reports were not affected in this incident. That is different from saying there was no risk. A name, Social Security number or birth date can help a criminal submit a convincing new-credit application even when the underlying credit file was not stolen.
A credit freeze limits prospective creditors’ access to your file, subject to legal exceptions. It does not erase information, stop every type of identity theft or secure an existing bank or card account.
See TransUnion’s explanations of freezes and breach response at its freeze FAQ and its breach-response guidance. A secondary discussion that reported credit reports were not affected is at PTechPartners.
How to tell whether you were affected
Having a TransUnion account or credit file does not by itself prove that you were included. Look for a direct letter or email that identifies the incident and usually includes a reference number, the exposed data elements, enrollment instructions and an expiration date.

What to do now
1. Freeze all three credit files
A freeze is free and generally the strongest preventive step against new-account fraud. Place one separately with each nationwide bureau:
A freeze does not affect existing cards or loans and can be temporarily lifted or removed when you apply for credit. It also does not prevent every inquiry or every form of fraud because some uses are exempt under law. The TransUnion freeze FAQ explains those exceptions.
2. Consider a fraud alert
A fraud alert asks creditors to take extra identity-verification steps. TransUnion says initial and active-duty alerts last one year; an extended alert lasts seven years and requires proof of identity theft. You generally contact one bureau for an initial alert, and it notifies the other two. A freeze, by contrast, must generally be managed with each bureau.

Freeze or fraud alert?
| Tool | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Strongest barrier to many new-credit applications | Usually must be lifted when you apply; set up separately at all three bureaus |
| Fraud alert | Extra verification without managing three freezes | Does not block access to your file; depends on creditor verification |
| Both | Elevated risk or suspicious activity already visible | More administration and neither stops every kind of fraud |
3. Get and review your credit reports
Use the federally authorized site AnnualCreditReport.com. TransUnion says free weekly reports are available from the three nationwide agencies. Check for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, changed addresses or phone numbers, unknown employers and collection accounts that are not yours.
4. Monitor existing and financial accounts
Review bank and card statements, loan-servicer notices, tax and government-benefit accounts, and health-insurance or medical billing accounts when relevant. Contact institutions using the number on a card or statement, not a number in a suspicious message. A freeze aimed at new credit will not stop fraud on an account a criminal already controls.
5. Use a legitimate monitoring offer carefully
If your letter offers identity monitoring or restoration, confirm the enrollment deadline and use the domain printed in the notice only after independently verifying it. Record the service period and what it covers. Monitoring generally alerts you after certain activity appears; it does not prevent all fraud. Check whether restoration assistance, reimbursement or insurance is included, along with exclusions and claim deadlines. An offer does not itself prove that you suffered financial harm or guarantee compensation.
6. Secure reused credentials and vulnerable accounts
The incident does not establish that passwords were exposed. Nevertheless, change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication and review account-recovery email addresses and phone numbers. These steps address account-takeover risk that a credit freeze cannot.

7. Report identity theft promptly
If you find a fraudulent account or transaction, contact the creditor or financial institution, preserve notices and case numbers, and report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov. A police report may help when an institution requests one. Dispute fraudulent credit-report information with the relevant bureau. TransUnion’s fraud-victim checklist describes documentation it may require to block fraudulent information.

Warning: Criminals may use real names, the TransUnion or Salesforce name, or details from a notice to make a message appear legitimate.
- Fake settlement emails requesting a Social Security number.
- Texts promising immediate compensation.
- Calls asking for a one-time passcode.
- Fake credit-freeze or monitoring websites.
- Messages impersonating a law firm or restoration provider.
Never provide a password, one-time code or full Social Security number in response to an unsolicited message. Navigate directly to official sites and use TransUnion’s verified consumer-support page.
Special situations and common mistakes
- Already frozen: Keep the freeze; you do not need to remove and replace it because of this incident.
- No notice received: Do not assume exposure, but remain alert and review reports periodically.
- Minor’s information: A parent or guardian may need a protected-consumer freeze and additional identity verification.
- Active-duty military: An active-duty fraud alert may be available.
- Tax or benefits risk: Credit monitoring may not detect it; protect those accounts separately.
- Common errors: Freezing only TransUnion, treating an alert as a freeze, clicking unexpected enrollment links, paying for duplicate monitoring, or waiting for a fraudulent account before freezing.
Do you need to buy identity-protection services?
No. Free freezes, fraud alerts, credit reports and government recovery tools are available. A paid service may make sense if you want continuous multi-bureau monitoring, restoration assistance or household coverage after a free breach benefit ends.
Compare multi-bureau coverage, restoration terms, reimbursement limits, alert speed, account monitoring, data-broker removal, trial-to-renewal pricing and cancellation rules. Do not assume any plan prevents identity theft. Current prices and plan terms change; verify them directly with providers such as TransUnion, Equifax, Experian, Aura or LifeLock/Norton before paying.
Bottom line
This was a reported third-party application incident affecting more than 4.4 million U.S. consumers, not evidence that every TransUnion credit report was stolen. Treat your notice as the authority for your data, freeze all three credit files, consider a fraud alert, review reports and existing accounts, and verify every breach-related communication independently.
