If a contribution is missing from your retirement account, first identify whether the account is National Pension System (NPS) or Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). Those are separate systems. The official material available for this issue documents an EPF process through EPFO; it does not establish an NPS-specific portal, complaint path or posting timetable. Do not submit an NPS complaint through EPFO merely because both are workplace retirement deductions.
Use the EPF steps below only when your payslip, account statement or employer confirms that the disputed amount belongs to EPF. For a genuine NPS case, preserve your records and contact the official NPS account administrator or the employer’s designated retirement-benefits contact using the details shown on your NPS statement. The correct NPS route depends on the account and intermediary, and is not established by the EPFO instructions covered here.

Start by identifying the retirement scheme
A payroll deduction can be labelled imprecisely. Before asking anyone to “credit” money, match the deduction on your payslip with the account statement you are checking. The following distinction prevents an EPF complaint from being filed for an NPS transaction, or vice versa.
| Question | EPF | NPS |
|---|---|---|
| What the available official material covers | EPFO member passbook, employer ECR filing and EPFiGMS grievances. | No NPS-specific checking or grievance route is established in the material available for this article. |
| First account record to inspect | EPFO member passbook and, where relevant, claim-status information. | Your own NPS statement or account record from its official administrator. |
| Employer evidence | Whether you were included in the ECR for the wage month and whether payment was completed. | The employer or NPS administrator must confirm the relevant contribution record; an EPF ECR cannot prove an NPS posting. |
| Escalation named in the official material | EPFiGMS, with document upload, status tracking and reminders. | Not stated; do not assume EPFiGMS accepts or resolves NPS cases. |
Look for the scheme name, account or subscriber identifier and the wage month on the record. If the payslip says “NPS” but the statement you opened is an EPFO passbook, stop and obtain the correct NPS statement before escalating. If the payslip says “PF” or “EPF,” the documented EPFO workflow applies.

What a missing EPF entry can mean
An absent line in a passbook does not, by itself, establish that an employer failed to pay. EPFO’s ECR and audit materials identify several possible points of failure: the employer may not have included the member in the return, a member or wage-month field may be incorrect, payment may not have been completed, or the contribution may not yet be posted or visible in the passbook. The passbook display alone cannot distinguish those causes.
Employer return or payment omission
The employer may have omitted the employee from the ECR for the relevant wage month or filed the return without completing the corresponding payment. Payroll can verify both facts in its filing and payment records.
Incorrect member or date information
An invalid member detail or an incorrect date can prevent a contribution from appearing in the expected account. EPFO material describes correction processes for these cases. A recorded exit date is especially important: while it remains on the record, it can constrain subsequent contributions until the employer corrects it.
Posting or display delay
A filing and payment may be complete while the passbook entry is still being posted. Ask payroll for the filing and payment confirmation before concluding that money was never remitted.

How to check and resolve an EPF contribution
Follow these steps only after confirming that the disputed deduction is EPF.
1. Inspect the official passbook
- Sign in to EPFO’s official member passbook service.
- Select the particular member account if more than one is shown.
- Open the wage month in which the contribution should appear.
- Record what is displayed, including the employee and employer entries, and note whether the month is absent or whether an amount is different from your records.
Save or print the relevant view if the service allows it. Compare the month and amounts with your salary slip, payroll statement and any employer contribution summary. Keep the comparison factual: identify the wage month, expected amount and amount actually displayed.
2. Ask payroll to verify ECR inclusion and payment
Send payroll or HR a written request that names the establishment, wage month and member account. Ask two separate questions:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Was the member included in the ECR for that wage month?
- Was the corresponding payment completed?
Request the relevant confirmation rather than a general assurance. A return-inclusion confirmation and a payment confirmation answer different questions. If payroll says the amount was filed and paid, retain that response and compare its details with the passbook account and month.

3. Request the appropriate employer correction
If payroll finds that you were omitted from the regular return, entered with incorrect member information or affected by an incorrect date, ask the employer to use the applicable EPFO correction process. EPFO’s ECR materials describe employer-side return, payment and correction workflows. The employer, not the member, normally has access to the filing records needed to correct an omitted row or a wrong field.
If an exit date was recorded incorrectly, ask payroll to address that date before expecting later contributions to post. A contribution made after an uncorrected exit date can remain constrained by the existing record.
4. Escalate an unresolved EPF discrepancy through EPFiGMS
If payroll cannot resolve the discrepancy, or the passbook remains inconsistent with confirmed filing and payment records, register a grievance on the official EPFiGMS portal as a PF Member using your UAN. Include:

EPFiGMS provides document upload, grievance-status viewing and a reminder function. Keep the grievance reference number and use the status page rather than opening multiple duplicate complaints. The official material reviewed here does not establish a universal resolution period, so no fixed number of days should be promised.

Use the evidence to choose the right path
| Passbook result | Payroll response | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Entry is present and matches the salary record. | Not needed unless another discrepancy remains. | Keep the statement and payslip together; the apparent absence may have been an account-selection or viewing error. |
| Entry is absent. | Member was not included in the ECR. | Ask the employer to use the applicable correction process and provide confirmation after resubmission or correction. |
| Entry is absent or wrong. | Member was included, but payment is not confirmed. | Ask payroll to complete or investigate payment, then recheck the passbook. |
| Entry is absent or wrong. | Inclusion and payment are both confirmed. | Retain the confirmations and file an EPFiGMS grievance if the account is still not corrected. |
| Entry is blocked after a recorded exit date. | Exit date is incorrect or disputed. | Ask the employer to correct the exit information before expecting subsequent contributions to post. |
This table is a decision aid, not a diagnosis. Only the member’s passbook and the employer’s actual filing and payment records can establish what happened in an individual account.
Do not treat the September–October 2025 notice as a current outage
EPFO published a notice stating: “Passbook updates for wage months Sept–Oct 2025 are under process due to revamped ECR ledger posting. Temporary non-visibility of contributions is expected for a couple of days.” That notice refers specifically to those two wage months and describes a historical posting period. It does not show that an entry missing now for another month is caused by an outage, and it does not establish that every affected account was updated on that schedule.
For a current discrepancy, check current official notices and ask payroll about the specific ECR and payment. Do not use the 2025 statement as proof that a present-day delay is routine.

Protect your account while seeking help
EPFO’s member passbook page carries a direct warning:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
“Please never respond to any call for sharing any personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, Bank details, OTP or request for any payment.EPFO never calls members/pensioners to deposit any amount. Please do not make any payment, based on any such call.”
Use only official EPFO services that you reach yourself. A caller who promises to credit a missing contribution, asks for an OTP or requests a fee is not a substitute for payroll verification or an EPFiGMS grievance. Do not send identity, bank or authentication details in response to an unsolicited call or message.
If the missing contribution is genuinely NPS
Do not copy the EPF workflow into an NPS complaint. The available official material does not identify which NPS portal, intermediary, employer process or grievance channel applies to your account. It therefore cannot support a reliable instruction to check EPFO, use a UAN or file through EPFiGMS for an NPS contribution.
Instead, assemble a precise record for the official NPS administrator or the employer contact responsible for your NPS deduction:
- The payslip or payroll statement showing the NPS deduction and wage month.
- The NPS statement or transaction view showing the missing credit.
- The subscriber or account identifier displayed on that statement.
- The date and amount deducted, plus any employer contribution shown separately.
- Written correspondence from payroll or the account administrator.
Ask that contact to confirm whether the deduction was transmitted, the transaction or posting status, and the correction route if the subscriber number or contribution month is wrong. Keep the request focused on the exact wage month and amount. If the administrator directs you to a formal complaint channel, retain its reference number and follow its status instructions. Do not present an EPFO passbook, ECR confirmation or EPFiGMS reference as proof of an NPS posting; they belong to a different system.
Records to keep until the account is corrected
- A copy of the payslip for every disputed wage month.
- The passbook or NPS statement view showing the missing or incorrect entry.
- Payroll’s written answers about return inclusion and payment, where the issue is EPF.
- Any employer correction confirmation and the date you rechecked the account.
- Your EPFiGMS grievance reference and reminder history, where applicable.
- A record of the official service used and the date checked.
Organizing the evidence by wage month prevents a general “missing contribution” complaint from obscuring whether the problem is an omitted return row, an unpaid filing, incorrect account data or a posting delay.
