Microsoft’s Free Windows 11 Upgrade Has a OneDrive Catch—but the Upgrade Itself Is Free

The Windows 11 upgrade itself is free for eligible activated Windows 10 PCs. The potential charge applies to OneDrive-based migration, while incompatible hardware may create the biggest expense.

The Windows 11 upgrade itself remains free for an eligible, properly licensed Windows 10 PC. The potential charge applies to an optional cloud-based backup and migration workflow that uses OneDrive—not to the Windows 11 operating-system license.

The confusion began with reporting on a Microsoft promotional video published in 2025. Its migration demonstration included a Microsoft-account requirement and a warning that transfers above the free OneDrive allowance could require a paid Microsoft subscription. That is a real limitation of one cloud-transfer method, but it does not mean every Windows 10 user must buy Microsoft 365 to install Windows 11.

There are three separate costs to consider: the operating-system upgrade, cloud storage for migration, and possibly new hardware if the current PC does not meet Windows 11’s requirements. For people who remain on Windows 10, there is also the current cost of Extended Security Updates, or ESU.

The short answer: what is actually free?

As of the Microsoft information checked on August 10, 2026, Microsoft continues to describe the upgrade from a genuine, activated Windows 10 installation to Windows 11 as free on eligible devices. Microsoft says the upgrade produces a Windows 11 digital license tied to the device. The Windows edition normally carries over: Windows 10 Home upgrades to Windows 11 Home, while Windows 10 Pro upgrades to Windows 11 Pro. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ and its guidance on Windows activation and digital licenses.

That $0 operating-system upgrade does not include:

  • A new computer if the existing one fails Windows 11’s hardware requirements.
  • More OneDrive storage than the free allowance.
  • A Microsoft 365 subscription as part of the Windows license.
  • Paid applications, replacement software licenses, or technical support.
  • Any internet-provider charges for downloading a large installation.

The practical verdict: If the same PC is eligible, activated, and running a supported Windows 10 version, you can normally upgrade to Windows 11 without paying Microsoft for the operating system or for OneDrive.

Four different expenses are being mixed together

Possible expense When it applies Typical direct cost
Windows 11 upgrade The current PC meets Microsoft’s requirements and has a genuine activated Windows 10 license. $0
OneDrive cloud migration The selected files exceed the free personal OneDrive storage available for Windows Backup. $0 if the data fits; in the U.S., Microsoft 365 Basic is currently $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year for 100 GB.
Replacement hardware The existing PC cannot meet requirements such as the supported-CPU, TPM 2.0, or Secure Boot requirements. Variable—potentially hundreds of dollars or more.
Windows 10 ESU The owner keeps using an eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 consumer device after regular support ended. Depending on region and enrollment method: $0, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or $30 plus tax in the U.S.

These are not interchangeable charges. Paying for OneDrive does not make an incompatible computer eligible for Windows 11, and upgrading Windows does not automatically provide extra cloud storage.

Where the “hidden cost” story came from

In 2025, Microsoft promoted a Windows-to-Windows migration experience using Windows Backup. Reporting by Forbes and Windows Latest focused on an on-screen disclaimer in the demonstration. The disclaimer reportedly said that a Microsoft account was required and that transfers exceeding 5 GB required a Microsoft subscription or trial.

The concern is understandable: many people have more than 5 GB of personal files, particularly when Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and other folders are selected for synchronization. But the reporting should not be read as an official Microsoft statement that Windows 11 has a mandatory subscription fee.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The disclaimer concerns the cloud backup and migration route. Microsoft’s separate installation documentation lists Windows Update, the Windows 11 Installation Assistant, and installation media as upgrade methods. None makes a paid OneDrive plan the license mechanism. Microsoft’s supported installation methods also distinguish an in-place upgrade from backup and file-transfer tools.

What the 5 GB OneDrive limit means

A free personal Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. Windows Backup can synchronize selected folders to that OneDrive account, so the free capacity has to accommodate the files selected for cloud backup, along with any other content already stored in OneDrive. Microsoft describes the Windows Backup process and its storage relationship in its Windows Backup documentation.

If the selected files fit within the available 5 GB, the cloud workflow can cost nothing. If they do not, the user can:

  1. Choose fewer folders or remove existing OneDrive files.
  2. Copy the files to an external drive.
  3. Transfer files directly from the old PC to the new PC.
  4. Use another trusted backup location.
  5. Buy additional OneDrive storage if cloud convenience is worth the cost.

Microsoft’s current U.S. pricing page lists Microsoft 365 Basic with 100 GB of storage at $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year. Prices, taxes, plans, and availability vary by country and can change, so check the Microsoft OneDrive plans and pricing page for the relevant market.

  • 【Easy to Carry】The USB extension cable multiple port has been Special designed to be as slim and light as possible, ideal for your working and traveling with ultrabook. easy to store and use

Crucially, the 5 GB limit is not a limit on the Windows 11 installation download, and it is not a limit on the amount of data an in-place upgrade can retain. It applies to the free OneDrive storage used by the cloud-backup workflow.

Windows Backup is not a complete system image

Windows Backup is useful, but its name can imply more than it actually does. It is primarily a cloud-synchronization and settings-recovery tool—not a full offline clone of the old computer.

Depending on the options selected, it can back up or synchronize:

  • Folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music.
  • Windows settings and personalization preferences.
  • Accessibility settings.
  • Language preferences and personal dictionary information.
  • Wi-Fi information and passwords.
  • Installed-app information or app lists that help identify what may need to be restored.

Traditional desktop applications may still need to be downloaded and installed again. Windows Backup should not be treated as a guarantee that a paid application, its license activation, plug-ins, preferences, or locally stored database will be transferred intact. Microsoft also says that applications known to be incompatible may be removed during an upgrade and may not be reinstallable until the publisher provides a compatible version. The relevant compatibility guidance appears in Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using Windows Backup, confirm that the folders you care about have finished synchronizing and that important files are accessible from the OneDrive account. For irreplaceable files, maintain a separate backup rather than relying on synchronization alone.

OneDrive is not required for an in-place upgrade

If you are keeping the same computer, there is no reason to buy OneDrive merely to upgrade the operating system. The normal in-place process can preserve personal files and installed applications without sending those files through Microsoft’s cloud.

Upgrade through Windows Update

  1. Back up important files to an external drive or another trusted location.
  2. Confirm that Windows 10 is activated. On Windows 10, this is generally under Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Install pending Windows 10 updates.
  4. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. If Windows 11 is offered, select Download and install.
  7. Accept the license terms and restart when prompted.
  8. After installation, sign in and verify that Windows is activated and that your files and applications work.

Microsoft may offer Windows 11 through Windows Update only after checking the device, drivers, and update readiness. A missing offer does not necessarily mean that the only solution is to pay for cloud storage; it may indicate an eligibility issue, a compatibility hold, or that Windows 10 needs updating.

Use the Installation Assistant or installation media

Microsoft also provides the Windows 11 Installation Assistant and installation media through its Windows 11 installation guidance. When running setup from installation media on the existing Windows installation, the choices normally include:

  • Keep personal files and apps — the usual in-place upgrade choice.
  • Keep personal files only — removes applications while retaining personal files.
  • Nothing — removes files and applications; this is effectively a wipe and requires a verified backup.

OneDrive is recommended as one possible backup destination, but it is not required for the Keep personal files and apps option. A local external-drive backup is often preferable if privacy, bandwidth, or cloud capacity is a concern.

Could the real cost be a new PC?

For many Windows 10 owners, incompatible hardware is a more consequential financial issue than the OneDrive limit. Windows 11 has minimum requirements that can exclude otherwise functional computers.

Requirement Microsoft’s minimum
Processor 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, and an approved processor
Memory 4 GB of RAM
Storage 64 GB or larger
Firmware UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
Security chip TPM 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver
Display Larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution
Setup requirements Internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup for Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro

For Windows Update to offer the upgrade, Microsoft says the PC must be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. The full list is in Microsoft’s Windows 11 system-requirements documentation.

Check before assuming the PC needs replacement

  1. Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check app to identify the failed requirement.
  2. Install current Windows 10 updates and run the check again.
  3. If TPM is the problem, check whether TPM 2.0 is present but disabled in UEFI firmware. Microsoft provides instructions for enabling TPM 2.0.
  4. If storage or RAM is the failing requirement, determine whether those components can be replaced economically.
  5. If the processor is not on Microsoft’s supported list, there may be no supported hardware fix.

Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on a device that fails the minimum requirements. Such a computer may not be supported and updates are not guaranteed. An unofficial workaround may appear to install successfully, but it changes the support and update risk; it should not be presented as an equivalent to a supported free upgrade.

Free ways to move files without buying OneDrive

A user moving to a new Windows 11 computer has more choices than the 2025 cloud demonstration suggested.

1. Direct PC-to-PC transfer

Microsoft now documents a direct transfer feature that can move files, settings, and preferences over the same Wi-Fi or wired LAN connection. It does not require purchasing OneDrive storage.

The documented requirements and limitations include:

  • The old computer can run Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • The new computer must run Windows 11, version 2024 or later.
  • Both computers should be connected to the same network and plugged into power.
  • A Microsoft account is required on the new computer.
  • The feature is not currently available in China.
  • Both computers need enough free space for the transfer.
  • Interrupted transfers can be resumed.
  • Installed applications, saved passwords and credentials, OneDrive files, system files, and BitLocker-encrypted drives are not transferred. Encrypted drives must be decrypted before they can be included, where appropriate.

To use it:

  1. Update both computers and connect them to the same Wi-Fi or LAN.
  2. Connect both to power.
  3. On the old computer, open Windows Backup.
  4. Select Transfer information to a new PC.
  5. Pair the computers using the displayed computer name and one-time code.
  6. Select the files and folders to move.
  7. Select Start transfer on the new computer.
  8. Reinstall applications separately and sign in to them using their own licenses or accounts.

Microsoft’s current instructions are available under Transfer your files and settings to a new Windows PC.

  • What You Get: Anker Ultra Slim 4-Port USB 3.0 Data Hub, welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty and friendly customer service.

2. An external drive

A USB flash drive, SD card, or external hard drive avoids both the OneDrive capacity limit and a cloud subscription. Copy the needed files from the old computer, safely eject the drive, and copy them to the new one. Microsoft describes this process in its guide to moving files with external storage.

This approach is inexpensive if you already own a suitable drive, but it is manual. Open several copied files after the transfer and compare important folders with the originals. Do not assume that copying personal files also transfers application installations, browser credentials, email databases, or software licenses.

3. File History

File History can continuously copy personal files to an external drive or network location and retain earlier versions. It is valuable for recovering a deleted or overwritten file, but it is not an automatic application-reinstallation system or a complete operating-system image.

4. A local backup before an in-place upgrade

If the upgrade is happening on the same PC, use an external drive or another trusted local backup before starting. This avoids the assumption that every file must first be uploaded to OneDrive. The backup should be completed and tested before setup begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the PC is not eligible?

Do not jump straight from a failed PC Health Check result to buying a computer. Work through the failure in this order:

  1. Identify the exact failure. TPM, Secure Boot, storage, RAM, firmware, and processor failures have different remedies.
  2. Check firmware settings. TPM 2.0 may be present but disabled. Secure Boot may also need to be enabled after confirming that the system is configured appropriately.
  3. Update Windows 10 and device firmware where supported. Then rerun PC Health Check.
  4. Price replaceable parts. A larger SSD or additional RAM may cost less than a new computer, although compatibility and installation labor matter.
  5. Use ESU as a temporary bridge. This can provide security updates while you save for or research a replacement.
  6. Replace the PC if necessary. This is the largest potential cost associated with moving to Windows 11, but it is a hardware purchase—not a hidden Windows 11 upgrade fee.
  7. Consider another operating system only deliberately. Compatibility with applications, peripherals, games, accessibility tools, and support resources should be checked first.

Windows 10 is past regular support, but ESU is available

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That does not mean every Windows 10 installation immediately stopped working, but it does mean regular security support ended. Microsoft currently offers consumer Extended Security Updates for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices through October 12, 2027. The current terms are listed on Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates page.

For eligible U.S. consumer devices, Microsoft lists these enrollment routes:

  • Sync PC settings at no additional cost.
  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • Pay $30 plus applicable tax as a one-time option.

The enrollment process generally appears under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update as Enroll now. An administrator Microsoft account is required for the relevant enrollment process. Eligibility and choices differ by region, particularly in the European Economic Area, so the U.S. options should not be treated as universal.

ESU provides critical and important security updates. It does not provide new Windows features, general bug fixes, or ordinary technical support. It is a temporary security bridge, not a permanent substitute for a supported operating system.

How Microsoft-account requirements fit into the picture

Several separate Microsoft-account requirements are easy to conflate:

  • Windows 11 upgrade: A Microsoft 365 subscription is not required for the upgrade. An existing local Windows account does not turn the operating-system upgrade into a OneDrive purchase.
  • Windows Backup: The consumer backup and cloud-synchronization workflow uses a personal Microsoft account. It is not the same thing as the Windows 11 license.
  • Windows 11 initial setup: Microsoft lists an internet connection and Microsoft account for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro. That setup requirement should not automatically be extended to every in-place-upgrade step or every Windows edition.
  • ESU: The current consumer enrollment process requires signing in with an administrator Microsoft account.

A local-account user who does not want to use OneDrive can therefore choose an external-drive backup or, when moving to a new supported Windows 11 PC, direct PC-to-PC transfer. The account requirement for one workflow does not create a mandatory cloud-storage fee for all workflows.

Decision guide: which route makes financial sense?

Your situation Best route Likely direct cost Important trade-off
Eligible PC and you are keeping it In-place upgrade through Windows Update, Installation Assistant, or installation media $0 Back up first and confirm application compatibility.
Moving to a new Windows 11 computer with ordinary file collections Direct PC-to-PC transfer $0 Apps, credentials, OneDrive files, and some encrypted drives are excluded.
Large file collection and preference for cloud convenience Windows Backup and OneDrive $0 if within available capacity; otherwise paid storage Requires a personal Microsoft account and sufficient cloud space.
Privacy-sensitive or bandwidth-limited user External drive and/or File History Existing drive or drive purchase More manual file selection and verification.
Unsupported PC but replacement is not immediate Windows 10 ESU, if eligible $0–$30 or 1,000 Rewards points in the U.S. Security updates only, with regional eligibility differences.
Metered internet connection Schedule the download, use installation media, or check the ISP’s data policy Potential ISP data charge The Windows 11 download can be large even though Microsoft does not charge an upgrade fee.

Upgrade checklist before paying for anything

  1. Run PC Health Check and identify the exact compatibility result.
  2. Check that Windows 10 is genuine and activated.
  3. Confirm the Windows edition you have and expect the corresponding Windows 11 edition.
  4. Install pending Windows 10 updates.
  5. Back up irreplaceable files independently of the upgrade process.
  6. Measure the files you actually want in the cloud. Do not select every folder automatically if 5 GB is sufficient for only a smaller subset.
  7. Compare OneDrive’s price with an external drive or direct transfer.
  8. Record application licenses, installation files, browser bookmarks, email settings, and recovery keys.
  9. If using BitLocker, make sure you have the recovery key and understand which drives a transfer tool can read.
  10. Check whether your internet connection has a data cap or metered pricing.
  11. Keep the old system or a verified backup available until the new installation is working.

What happens if you want to go back?

Microsoft says the normal rollback option is available for about 10 days after an upgrade. Within that window, the recovery option may allow a return to Windows 10 while preserving the previous installation files. After the rollback period, returning generally requires a clean Windows 10 installation and a separate backup of personal data. Check the current Windows 11 upgrade FAQ before deleting the previous installation files or using disk-cleanup tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is another reason not to treat Windows Backup as the only safety net. A cloud-synchronized folder may protect personal files, but it does not necessarily preserve every application, driver, system setting, or rollback component.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Microsoft 365 to upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11?

No. Microsoft 365 is not required for a normal Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrade on an eligible, activated PC. A subscription may be useful or necessary only for a particular OneDrive-based migration when the selected files exceed the available free cloud storage.

What if my files are larger than 5 GB?

You do not have to buy OneDrive. Use an external drive, File History, or Microsoft’s direct PC-to-PC transfer feature when moving to a new Windows 11 computer. If you prefer cloud migration, Microsoft 365 Basic currently provides 100 GB in the U.S. for $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year, subject to price and regional changes.

Does Windows Backup move all of my programs?

No. Windows Backup can remember application information and settings, but traditional desktop applications may need to be downloaded and reinstalled. Microsoft’s direct PC-to-PC transfer feature explicitly does not transfer installed applications, saved credentials, OneDrive files, or system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install Windows 11 on a PC that fails the requirements?

Some unofficial installation methods exist, but Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. Support and updates are not guaranteed. First check whether TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot is merely disabled and whether RAM or storage can be upgraded.

Is Windows 10 completely unsupported now?

Regular Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Eligible consumer Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can currently enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027, with options and pricing that vary by region. ESU supplies security updates, not new features or general technical support.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Windows 11 operating-system upgrade is still free for an eligible, activated Windows 10 PC. The alleged hidden cost is a limit in Microsoft’s optional OneDrive-based migration workflow: a free personal account has 5 GB, and larger cloud transfers may require paid storage. You can avoid that charge with an in-place upgrade, an external drive, or direct PC-to-PC transfer. The cost worth checking first is not OneDrive—it is whether your existing computer meets Windows 11’s hardware requirements.
