Microsoft Gaming cut approximately 650 jobs in September 2024 after Activision Blizzard integration

Microsoft Gaming announced approximately 650 job eliminations on September 12, 2024, primarily across corporate and support functions. The cuts were presented as part of restructuring after Microsoft brought Activision Blizzard into its gaming organization. Microsoft said that this round did not involve closing studios or canceling games, devices, or experiences.

This is a historical explainer of the September 2024 announcement—not a newly announced round of layoffs.

What happened to Microsoft Gaming employees?

Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s gaming chief, announced the cuts in an internal memo that was later reported by GeekWire and other outlets. Approximately 650 roles were eliminated across Microsoft Gaming, the broader organization that includes Xbox, Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard/King.

“Xbox layoffs” is common shorthand, but Microsoft Gaming is more precise. The available reporting does not provide a complete country-by-country breakdown, so the affected employees should not be assumed to have been located only in the United States.

Microsoft described the affected positions as mostly corporate and supporting roles. That does not establish that every developer-facing or operational team was unaffected: Spencer’s message acknowledged that some teams could be affected as the company adjusted priorities and managed the life cycle and performance of games.

Why did Microsoft make the cuts?

Microsoft said the restructuring was intended to align its post-acquisition team structure, reduce organizational overlap, and manage the business for long-term success. In other words, the company framed the layoffs as an organizational consolidation following the expansion of Microsoft Gaming.

That explanation should be distinguished from a proven financial cause. The timing and company messaging connect the cuts to post-acquisition integration, but the available evidence does not establish that every eliminated role was directly caused by one specific Activision Blizzard integration problem.

How the Activision Blizzard acquisition fits in

Microsoft announced its planned Activision Blizzard acquisition on January 18, 2022, at an announced transaction value of $68.7 billion. The deal was completed on October 13, 2023, when Activision, Blizzard, and King joined Microsoft’s gaming organization. Microsoft described the completed integration in its announcement welcoming the companies to Team Xbox.

  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

Microsoft’s figures can also show a different amount: its later annual report recorded a $75.4 billion accounting purchase price. These numbers come from different contexts—the original announced transaction value and the later accounting treatment—and should not be treated as contradictory without that qualification. See Microsoft’s 2022 acquisition announcement and FY2025 annual report.

Activision Blizzard’s results were folded into Microsoft’s More Personal Computing segment. Microsoft’s FY2024 annual report said Xbox content and services revenue increased 50%, including a 44-percentage-point net impact from Activision Blizzard becoming first-party content. That revenue increase does not, by itself, prove that the acquisition was immediately profitable on an operating basis, nor does it prove that it caused the layoffs.

The 2024 Microsoft Gaming layoff timeline

Date What happened
January 2024 Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 job cuts across Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard.
May 2024 Microsoft announced the closure of Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games. Roundhouse Studios was folded into ZeniMax Online rather than continuing as a separate studio.
September 12, 2024 Microsoft Gaming announced approximately 650 additional role eliminations, mostly in corporate and support functions.

Adding the two publicly reported layoff figures gives approximately 2,550 jobs eliminated in those January and September rounds. Some contemporaneous reports used totals such as “more than 2,400,” likely because of rounding, incomplete information, or different counting methods. The arithmetic based on the two reported figures is 1,900 plus 650.

Some coverage called the September announcement the “third round” of Xbox layoffs. That label depends on how earlier reductions are counted. The clearer description is that it followed the large January cuts and the May studio closures and reorganization.

Were games or studios canceled in September?

Microsoft said no studios were closed and no games, devices, or experiences were canceled as part of the September round. That statement applies specifically to that announcement. It does not mean Microsoft Gaming experienced no disruption elsewhere during 2024.

The May studio closures had already affected Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games. The January cuts were associated with wider disruption across Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard, including contemporaneous reporting about the cancellation of Blizzard’s survival project.

Reports also described changes involving Warcraft Rumble, which was shifting toward post-launch live operations, and Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, which reportedly had not met expectations. Those details came from contemporaneous reporting, not an official Microsoft list of every affected project. The games were not reported as being taken offline because of the September layoffs.

For players, the important distinction is between “no cancellation announced in this round” and “nothing changed anywhere in Xbox.” The first is supported by Microsoft’s statement; the second is not.

What did the layoffs mean for game developers?

It would be inaccurate to describe all 650 affected workers as game developers, because Microsoft said the roles were mostly corporate and support positions. It would also be inaccurate to say that no development or operational teams were affected at all.

The company’s wording left room for changes among teams dealing with shifting priorities, game life cycles, and performance. The public information did not identify every affected department, project, location, or job title. Claims that the entire reduction consisted of designers and programmers—or that developers were entirely exempt—go beyond the available evidence.

What support did affected workers receive?

Contemporaneous reporting said U.S. employees were offered severance pay, extended healthcare coverage, and outplacement or job-placement assistance. Packages outside the United States were expected to vary according to local law and company policy.

There was no basis for assuming that every affected worker worldwide received the same package. The announcement also did not publicly provide a complete geographic breakdown or a universal benefits schedule.

What does this mean for Xbox players?

  • No immediate product cancellation was announced: Microsoft said the September cuts did not cancel games, devices, or experiences.
  • No studio closure was part of that round: This does not undo the separate studio closures and reorganization announced in May.
  • Xbox hardware was not shown to be ending: The layoffs alone do not establish that Microsoft is abandoning consoles.
  • Long-term effects were less certain: Changes to support teams, live-service operations, release planning, or internal priorities could affect products over time, but the reviewed announcement did not disclose a complete forecast.

The announcement therefore supports a conclusion of organizational consolidation and strategic change—not a definitive claim that Xbox was exiting hardware or traditional first-party game development.

Why the announcement mattered beyond the 650 jobs

The September reduction arrived during a broader contraction in the video-game labor market and after Microsoft Gaming had absorbed one of the industry’s largest publishers. It raised questions about whether Microsoft could coordinate Xbox, Bethesda, Activision, Blizzard, and King without duplicating corporate and support functions.

It also intensified scrutiny of Microsoft’s wider strategy, including console hardware, PC and cloud distribution, multiplatform releases, and live-service games. But a layoff announcement is not, by itself, proof of a specific hardware strategy or a verdict on the financial success of the acquisition.

The strongest supported interpretation is narrower: Microsoft Gaming was reorganizing after a major acquisition, cutting approximately 650 mostly corporate and support roles while saying that this particular round would not close studios or cancel games, devices, or experiences.

What the numbers do—and do not—show

Some reports characterized 650 jobs as roughly 3% of Microsoft Gaming’s workforce. Because Microsoft did not provide a verified current headcount for the relevant organization in the sources reviewed, that percentage should be treated as a reported estimate rather than a company-confirmed statistic.

Likewise, the available evidence does not support saying that Microsoft “saved” a specific amount of money, that the acquisition “failed,” or that the layoffs were caused solely by Activision Blizzard. Revenue growth and job reductions can occur at the same company at the same time: revenue measures sales, while staffing decisions can reflect integration, duplicated functions, changing priorities, expected costs, and resource allocation. The sources do not establish the precise financial contribution of each factor.
