Michael Dell’s 2026 investment thesis is broader than buying more GPUs. Dell Technologies is positioning artificial intelligence as an end-to-end infrastructure opportunity spanning AI PCs, accelerated servers, storage, networking, automation and partner-delivered services.
For investors, enterprise buyers and Dell channel partners, the important question is not simply whether AI demand will grow. It is whether Dell can turn that demand into profitable, repeatable deployments—and whether customers can achieve enough business value to justify the infrastructure spending.

What Michael Dell says Dell is prioritizing in 2026
In an interview published as part of CRN’s CEO Outlook 2026, Michael Dell identified enabling customers and partners to succeed in the AI era as his leading priority. His comments point to four connected investment areas:
- AI across the technology stack: AI PCs, Precision workstations, accelerated servers, storage, networking and deployment services.
- The Dell AI Factory: an integrated architecture connecting compute, data, storage, models, automation and services.
- AI-ready storage: infrastructure for data ingestion, training, retrieval-augmented generation, inference, model artifacts and protection.
- Channel partners: resellers, integrators, consultants and managed-service providers that can modernize data centers and convert AI experiments into production systems.
The interview is a strategic outlook, not a detailed capital-expenditure announcement. It does not disclose a dollar-by-dollar allocation among servers, storage, PCs, software, services or partner incentives. That distinction matters: Dell has stated its direction, but the interview is not a formal investment budget or financial forecast.

Why Dell’s AI strategy includes much more than GPUs
AI applications need accelerators, but accelerators cannot create value if data is unavailable, poorly governed or delivered too slowly. An enterprise AI deployment typically requires a pipeline for collecting and curating data, moving it to compute, maintaining embeddings and model checkpoints, serving inference requests, and protecting the resulting information.
Dell’s AI strategy therefore treats infrastructure as a stack:
| Layer | Dell’s focus | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Client | AI PCs, Copilot+ PCs and Precision workstations | Local inference, productivity features, privacy and edge processing |
| Compute | PowerEdge XE-series and other accelerated systems | Training, fine-tuning and inference workloads |
| Storage | PowerScale, ObjectScale, PowerStore and AI data platforms | Data ingestion, access, lifecycle management and resilience |
| Networking | Ethernet and InfiniBand fabrics | Moving data between storage, GPUs and users |
| Software and automation | AI Factory frameworks, automation and validated blueprints | Reducing integration and operating complexity |
| Services and partners | Deployment, consulting, managed services and industry expertise | Turning infrastructure into measurable business outcomes |
Dell describes the AI Factory as an architecture and go-to-market framework, not a single server SKU. It is intended for deployments across core data centers, private environments, cloud and edge locations. The practical benefit is standardization and validation; the trade-off is that customers may become more dependent on Dell’s ecosystem, roadmap and approved integrations.

Why storage is central to the investment thesis
Dell’s argument is that storage is becoming a strategic component of AI infrastructure rather than a secondary repository. Storage must support large datasets, parallel reads, high concurrency, small-file activity, model artifacts and recovery operations while working with the chosen network and accelerator design.

It also has to support the full lifecycle of AI data:
- Ingesting and curating source data.
- Preparing datasets for training or fine-tuning.
- Serving data quickly enough to reduce accelerator idle time.
- Maintaining embeddings, vector indexes, checkpoints and model versions.
- Supporting retrieval-augmented generation and inference.
- Protecting data against corruption, ransomware, unauthorized access and operational failure.
Dell’s AI storage materials position PowerScale and ObjectScale as file and object layers for AI environments, while PowerStore addresses unified block and file workloads and broader enterprise use cases. These are Dell’s product-positioning claims, not independent proof that every configuration will deliver a particular performance level.
PowerScale, ObjectScale or PowerStore?
| Platform | Potential fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PowerScale | Large-scale file workloads, AI datasets, scale-out NAS and shared namespaces | Validate throughput, network design, GPU count, concurrency and data protection; it may be excessive for smaller environments. |
| ObjectScale | S3-compatible data lakes, archives, cloud-native applications and long-term AI retention | Object storage is not a universal replacement for low-latency block or traditional file access. |
| PowerStore | Virtual machines, databases, containers, transactional systems and mixed block/file requirements | It may not be the best primary platform for very large unstructured AI datasets or low-cost object capacity. |
The correct choice depends on the application’s protocol, latency, metadata behavior, growth rate, recovery objectives and access pattern—not merely on the fact that the buyer is pursuing AI.

What investors should—and should not—read into the strategy
CRN reported that Dell generated $27 billion in fiscal 2026 third-quarter revenue, including $14.1 billion from its Infrastructure Solutions Group and $12.5 billion from its Client Solutions Group. CRN also reported Dell’s expectation of approximately $25 billion in AI-server shipments for fiscal 2026, representing growth of more than 150% year over year.
Those figures should be treated as reported company expectations and attributed reporting, not as final audited results or a guarantee of future growth. They also do not establish how much profit Dell will retain after accelerator costs, supply-chain expenses, pricing pressure, power and cooling requirements, warranty obligations and partner discounts.
The investment case is therefore more nuanced than “AI demand is good for Dell.” Investors should watch whether AI infrastructure growth expands recurring services, storage and software opportunities; whether channel partners can deploy systems efficiently; whether customers move beyond pilots; and whether margins remain attractive as competition and component costs evolve.
Questions customers should answer before buying
- What is the workload? Separate training, fine-tuning, RAG, real-time inference, batch inference and general enterprise computing.
- Where is the data? Data gravity can make movement between public cloud and on-premises systems expensive and slow.
- Which protocol is required? File, object and block storage solve different problems; a wrong choice can create application or performance failures.
- Can the data pipeline keep GPUs busy? A large accelerator purchase does not create value if storage preparation or networking causes GPU starvation.
- Can compute and storage scale independently? Growth rates may differ, and an appliance model may not fit every expansion pattern.
- What are the recovery objectives? Include backup, ransomware recovery, model reproducibility, access controls and compliance.
- Can the facility support the design? Power, cooling, rack density, network fabric and staffing can become deployment constraints.
- Who will operate it? Define the partner’s responsibilities, service levels, escalation process and fees.
- What is the economic comparison? Model utilization, data movement, egress, power, labor, refresh cycles and the expected operating horizon.
On-premises infrastructure can provide data locality and more predictable economics for sustained workloads, but it requires capital, facilities and skilled staff. Public cloud can offer faster access and elasticity, but persistent data, heavy egress and long-running inference may change the economics. Hybrid and managed-partner models add flexibility while also adding governance and operational complexity.

Dell has cited a potential cost advantage in a commissioned Principled Technologies study using a four-year model, Llama 3 8B workloads, XE9680 systems with eight H100 GPUs and modeled AWS and Azure comparisons. That “up to 63%” figure should not be generalized beyond those assumptions.
The limits of Dell’s 2026 outlook
The interview leaves several questions unanswered: how investment is allocated internally, how Dell will address power and cooling constraints, how supply availability affects deployments, how customers will measure AI returns and how Dell’s economics compare with competing enterprise platforms or public cloud.
A validated blueprint can reduce integration risk, but it cannot eliminate data-quality problems, governance work, model-selection risk, security exposure or operating costs. Likewise, a fast storage system cannot guarantee that every AI application will run faster, and a partner incentive cannot guarantee a profitable engagement.

Michael Dell’s 2026 strategy is a full-stack AI infrastructure bet. Dell is emphasizing compute, storage, networking, automation, AI PCs and partner-led services rather than treating GPUs as the entire opportunity.
For customers, the practical lesson is to start with a workload and data architecture—not a headline server specification. For partners, the opportunity lies in modernization assessments, implementation, managed services and industry-specific AI use cases. For investors, the key test is whether Dell can convert strong AI infrastructure demand into durable revenue, healthy margins and repeatable customer outcomes.
