Meta reportedly delayed the public release of Llama 4 Behemoth after internal testing raised concerns that the model’s performance gains were not large enough to justify its cost and expectations. The model was not officially canceled, however. Meta had described Behemoth as a still-training “teacher model” intended to transfer capabilities into smaller Llama systems, while releasing Llama 4 Scout and Maverick in April 2025.
What happened to Llama 4 Behemoth?
The most accurate description is that Meta reportedly postponed Behemoth’s public release. Reporting summarized by Axios said Meta was concerned that the model did not represent a sufficient advance over earlier systems.

Computerworld reported that Behemoth was initially expected around Meta’s April 2025 AI developer event, then moved to June and later to fall 2025 or beyond. Those dates came from reporting and were not firm public commitments from Meta.

Meta had not announced a confirmed cancellation, final release date, or public replacement in the sources reviewed. The company’s own April 2025 Llama 4 announcement said Behemoth was still training when Scout and Maverick launched.

That makes “hits pause” understandable as headline language, but “delays the release” is more precise. There is no established evidence that Meta abandoned the model or its broader open-weight strategy.
What was Behemoth supposed to be?
Meta presented Behemoth as the largest model in the Llama 4 family and, importantly, as a teacher model. Its purpose was not necessarily to serve every user directly. Instead, Meta intended to use its capabilities to improve smaller, faster and cheaper models through distillation.
Meta’s published technical description listed Behemoth as a mixture-of-experts model with:
- 288 billion active parameters;
- 16 experts;
- multimodal capabilities; and
- a role in training or guiding smaller Llama 4 models.
“Active parameters” does not mean that all of the model’s parameters are used for every token. In a mixture-of-experts architecture, a routing system selects particular experts for each input. That can reduce computation per token compared with activating the entire model, but the full model still creates substantial storage, memory-bandwidth and serving requirements.
Some online reports have referred to Behemoth as a two-trillion-parameter model. That figure should not be treated as established fact here: Meta’s official announcement reviewed for this article specified 288 billion active parameters but did not confirm a total-parameter count of two trillion.
Meta also claimed that Behemoth outperformed GPT-4.5, Claude Sonnet 3.7 and Gemini 2.0 Pro on selected STEM benchmarks. Those are Meta’s claims, not independent proof of broad superiority. Benchmark results can vary with the model version, prompt, system instructions, evaluation set and testing method.
Why did capability concerns matter?
The reported problem was not simply that Behemoth was expensive or unfinished. The concern was that its improvement over previous systems might not be compelling enough.
The Information reported that technical benchmark performance was weaker than Meta had hoped, particularly in reasoning and mathematics. It also reported that Meta had delayed a reasoning version of Llama 4. Separately, The Information reported concerns about Llama 4’s performance in humanlike voice conversations. That voice-related account should be understood as attributed reporting rather than independently verified fact.
This distinction matters because a model can be much larger without producing noticeably better results for users. A flagship model must deliver more than impressive parameter counts. It may need to provide better coding, research, mathematical reasoning, tool use, voice interaction, reliability and safety at a cost that makes deployment practical.

A disappointing public release could also create reputational risk. If independent developers found that the model did not match expectations, Meta could face criticism over both its technical claims and its large investment in training and infrastructure.
What did Meta release instead?
Meta released Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick in April 2025. Both were described as natively multimodal mixture-of-experts models.

|---|---|---|
| Scout | 17 billion active parameters; 16 experts; claimed 10-million-token context window | Designed as a smaller, lower-cost option; Meta said it could fit on one H100 GPU with Int4 quantization |
| Maverick | 17 billion active parameters; 128 experts; 400 billion total parameters | A larger-capability option; Meta said it could run on a single H100 host |
| Behemoth | 288 billion active parameters; 16 experts | Presented primarily as a large teacher model and not publicly released with Scout and Maverick |
The specifications and performance statements above come from Meta. They are not neutral independent test results. Actual results can change with quantization, serving software, prompts, context length, multimodal inputs and the workload being measured.
Why Behemoth could matter even without a public release
Meta’s Q1 2025 earnings-call transcript provides an important strategic explanation. Mark Zuckerberg said that a large model such as Behemoth could be used to distill much of its intelligence into smaller models that are cheaper and faster to operate.
Zuckerberg described a goal of transferring roughly 90% to 95% of a large model’s intelligence into a more efficient form factor. That was a development objective or conceptual target, not an independently verified measurement showing that Scout or Maverick achieved that percentage.
This means Behemoth could influence Meta’s products without ever becoming a downloadable model. If it improved training data, distillation or product-specific systems, its commercial value could come from making smaller models better rather than from being served directly to every customer.

A model that looks strong on a benchmark may still be unsuitable for a consumer assistant if it is too slow, costly or unreliable in those settings.
Does the delay mean scaling has stopped working?
No. The delay is evidence that making models larger does not guarantee predictable or commercially meaningful improvement. It is not proof that scaling has permanently stopped working.
The more defensible interpretation is that the industry is facing diminishing returns or increasing difficulty. Training a larger model requires more computing capacity, data, engineering time and evaluation. Serving it can require expensive GPU infrastructure, distributed inference and careful memory management. Those costs are harder to justify when the quality improvement is small.

There are several ways a large model can disappoint despite strong headline results:
- Benchmark overfitting: High scores on selected tests may not predict performance on a company’s real workflows.
- Checkpoint differences: A demonstration or evaluation checkpoint may differ from a later public version.
- Quantization loss: Lower-precision deployment can change coding, reasoning or vision performance.
- Mixture-of-experts complexity: Lower active parameters do not eliminate the need to store and route a large collection of experts.
- Latency and context costs: Long prompts and multimodal inputs can increase response time and expense.
- Teacher-student loss: Distillation can transfer much of a teacher’s capability without reproducing all of its reasoning, knowledge or reliability.
Other major AI companies have also faced challenges delivering successive generations of models, according to Axios. That supports the idea that frontier development is becoming more difficult, but it does not establish that larger models are no longer valuable.

Developers should not base a production roadmap on Behemoth until Meta publishes weights, licensing terms, hardware requirements, evaluation data and a dependable availability plan.
For an immediate Llama deployment, Scout or Maverick may be more practical. The right choice depends on the workload rather than the model’s name or parameter count. Test:
- accuracy on representative prompts and user tasks;
- coding, reasoning and tool-use reliability;
- multimodal performance, if relevant;
- context-window requirements;
- latency and throughput;
- GPU memory and quantization behavior;
- fine-tuning and inference-server compatibility;
- licensing and acceptable-use restrictions; and
- safety monitoring and evaluation requirements.
Meta’s official announcement directed developers to llama.com for Llama downloads and listed Hugging Face as another channel. Availability, licenses and supported versions should be checked directly before deployment.

What this means for enterprises and investors
For enterprises, the question is not simply whether Behemoth is the largest model. The more useful questions are whether it meets accuracy and reliability targets, whether it fits the infrastructure budget, and whether the organization can obtain adequate support.
Businesses should also examine data-residency rules, privacy controls, commercial support, incident response, service-level agreements and the ability to switch providers. A delayed flagship model creates planning risk if a project depends on an unconfirmed release.
For investors and technology buyers, the episode highlights the difference between technical ambition and monetizable capability. A very large model may strengthen a company’s research position while remaining unattractive to serve directly. Its value may instead appear indirectly through better assistants, advertising tools, search, recommendations or smaller models.
Self-hosting can offer control and privacy, but H100-class infrastructure, distributed serving and MLOps expertise can be expensive. Managed proprietary APIs are easier to launch but provide less control over weights and vendor decisions. Smaller open-weight models can be cheaper and easier to customize, although their performance ceiling, license and support arrangements vary.

The most important signals will be:
- an official Meta announcement confirming whether Behemoth is publicly released;
- published weights, licensing terms and context limits;
- independent evaluations on reasoning, mathematics, coding, voice and multimodal tasks;
- actual hardware and serving requirements;
- whether Behemoth is used only for distillation; and
- whether Meta changes its approach to releasing the largest Llama models.
Until those details exist, Behemoth is best treated as an important but unconfirmed future option—not as a product that developers or enterprises can reliably buy, download or plan around.
