Meta’s customer-facing Workplace service is no longer available. Meta announced the closure on May 14, 2024; normal use ended on August 31, 2025, read-only access ran from September 1, 2025, and the published final shutdown date was May 31, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, ordinary customer access and the scheduled download window have ended.
What Workplace was
Workplace was Meta’s paid enterprise communications and collaboration platform. It used familiar social-network patterns—feeds, groups, comments, announcements, live video, knowledge sharing and employee communities—but added organizational administration, identity controls and business support. It was not simply a consumer Facebook account used at work.

The current product launched in 2016 after development under the “Facebook at Work” name. Meta said in 2021 that Workplace had passed 7 million paid subscribers since launch; that is a historical company figure, not a count of people affected by the 2026 closure. Axios reported on the 2016 launch, while Meta’s 2021 announcement gave the subscriber figure.

Why Meta ended Workplace
Meta’s stated reason
Meta said it was reallocating focus and resources toward artificial-intelligence and metaverse technologies. That is the company’s official explanation for ending the enterprise product. TechCrunch reported the announcement and rationale.
Competitive and business context
Workplace competed with Microsoft Teams, Slack and other collaboration and employee-communications platforms. TechCrunch also reported that growth had slowed after the pandemic and that the product had struggled to regain strategic momentum. Those are reported business explanations, not a separately verified statement that any single competitor caused the closure.
Meta’s own internal use
Ending the commercial service did not necessarily mean Meta stopped using an internal version immediately. Reuters-based reporting carried by ThePrint said Meta could continue using Workplace internally as a messaging board. That should not be read as continued commercial availability.

What happened to customer data?
During the migration window, Meta directed customers to use Download Your Information for user-level exports and the Workplace API for organizational exports. Those were pre-shutdown options, not guarantees after May 31, 2026.
Meta’s published schedule means routine Workplace access and the stated download period have ended. An organization that missed the deadline may still possess copies, but should not assume Meta can restore an instance or provide a complete archive.
Check these sources first
- Administrator exports and employee-level Download Your Information archives
- API-generated files and migration-project storage
- Corporate backup, e-discovery and legal-hold systems
- Email notifications, attachments and locally saved documents
- Archives held by a migration vendor or consultant
- Former Meta Workplace support or account-management contacts
Contacting Meta is an escalation request, not a promised recovery path. Document the records needed, the legal or regulatory deadline, and every location already searched.

Why a visible-post export may be incomplete
Posts alone may not preserve the enterprise record. Review whether any archive includes private groups, direct messages, comments, deleted material, file ownership, timestamps, authorship, permissions, audit history and retention metadata. Also check cross-border transfer restrictions and litigation holds. A machine-readable export and a user-facing HTML or media archive serve different compliance purposes.

Meta identified Workvivo, owned by Zoom, as its preferred migration partner and said it would work with Zoom on transition tools and services. That recommendation did not make Workvivo mandatory or the only technically possible destination.
Workvivo is built around employee communications and digital-workplace use cases, including company news, spaces and communities, activity feeds, events and livestreams, newsletters, push notifications, knowledge pages, document management, people directories, surveys, polls and engagement analytics. It also advertises SSO, provisioning, APIs and security controls. Its official pricing page presents customized, sales-led packages rather than a standard public price: Workvivo pricing.
Rank #4
It is the closest strategic fit when the requirement is an employee community and publishing platform. It may be excessive for a small business that only needs chat, and a migration partnership does not guarantee one-to-one conversion of every Workplace feature or data type.
Alternatives by use case
| Platform | Best fit | Important trade-offs and current pricing signal |
|---|---|---|
| Workvivo by Zoom | Employee communities, internal communications and digital workplace | Meta’s preferred partner; quote-based packages on the official page, so budget requires a sales discussion. Pricing |
| Microsoft Viva Engage | Organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365, Teams and Entra | Communities, announcements, leadership engagement, events and analytics. U.S. prices displayed August 18, 2026 were $2 per user per month paid yearly for Viva Employee Communications and Communities and $12 per user per month paid yearly for Viva Suite. Basic Engage features may be included in qualifying Microsoft 365 plans; premium features require licensing, and Teams-integrated features require a Teams license. Product and pricing details |
| Slack | Real-time channels, integrations and workflow automation | Strong for team discussion, but not a direct social-intranet or corporate-news replacement. Plans and prices change; check Slack’s official pricing page. |
| Google Workspace and Google Chat | Companies already using Gmail, Drive, Meet and Google identity | Efficient suite integration, but Chat is not necessarily a like-for-like employee-community and publishing platform. Edition pricing and features vary by country; see Google Workspace pricing. |
| Specialist intranet and employee-communications tools | Specific frontline, publishing, knowledge or engagement requirements | Vendors such as Haiilo, Simpplr, Staffbase, LumApps, Connecteam and Speakap should be evaluated on current features, migration support, residency and cost rather than assumed equivalence. |
Microsoft explicitly marketed Viva Engage and the wider Microsoft 365 environment to Workplace customers in a transition post. The right choice depends on whether the primary job is employee publishing, persistent knowledge, real-time work, or frontline communication.

Migration audit for organizations that moved
Importing content is not the same as completing a defensible migration. Test the replacement against this checklist:
Best Value
- User, group and role membership
- Posts, comments, photos, videos, documents and attachments
- Private-group permissions and direct-message treatment
- Search, knowledge pages and links to historical records
- Timestamps, authorship, permalinks and citation references
- Retention schedules, legal holds, deleted content and audit logs
- SSO, automated provisioning and deprovisioning
- API workflows, integrations and notification rules
- Mobile access and usability for frontline employees
- Executive announcements, archived company records and employee adoption
Questions for vendors
- Which Workplace data types can be imported, and which become downloadable archives only?
- Are permissions, authorship, timestamps and attachments preserved?
- Is the output machine-readable for compliance and discovery?
- What are the data-residency, retention and deletion controls?
- What minimum seats, implementation fees or add-ons apply?
What organizations should do now
If you completed a migration
- Run a sample-based content and permission audit across public, private and executive groups.
- Verify retention, legal-hold, export and audit-log procedures in the new platform.
- Test SSO, provisioning, integrations, mobile access and frontline workflows.
- Redirect or preserve important Workplace URLs and update internal documentation.
- Obtain business-owner sign-off that the archive meets operational and regulatory needs.
If you missed the May 31, 2026 deadline
- Search administrator exports, employee downloads, API locations and corporate backups.
- Check e-discovery, legal, compliance and third-party archive systems.
- Ask former administrators and project owners where migration files were stored.
- Contact Meta’s former support or account channel with a documented recovery request.
- Preserve evidence of the search and escalate promptly for regulated or litigated records.
A third-party migration service may be able to help organize existing archives, but its availability does not prove that Meta still holds customer data.
Bottom line
Meta’s enterprise social-networking product ended for customers on May 31, 2026. Workvivo is the most obvious successor for Workplace-style employee communities, Viva Engage is often the most economical route for existing Microsoft 365 customers, Slack is stronger for real-time collaboration, and Google Chat is most natural inside Google Workspace. The immediate priority for former customers is not finding a universal replacement; it is proving that the records, permissions and compliance obligations from Workplace were either migrated or safely archived.
