Memorial Day laptop deals usually start one to two weeks before the holiday, but the best early price is not automatically the biggest advertised discount. For 2026, promotions were visible by May 13 and Memorial Day fell on May 25. Those offers are now expired; the prices below are historical benchmarks for judging the next Memorial Day cycle, not live availability.
Buy early when the exact configuration is strong, the price is close to a verified recent low, and stock or delivery matters. Wait when the saving is calculated only from an inflated MSRP, the laptop has 8GB memory or a weak display, or major retailers have not yet launched their competing offers.

Other 2026 examples worth using as benchmarks
- Lenovo Chromebook Plus was reported at Best Buy for $399 versus $679. TechRadar noted that the 128GB storage capacity is a significant limitation for users who keep files or applications locally.
- Dell 16 Plus was reported at Dell for $899.99 versus $1,429.99.
- Separate roundups highlighted the MacBook Air M5, newer MacBook Pro models, an IdeaPad Slim 3x near $549 and Acer Swift Go 16 AI.

When Memorial Day laptop sales start
- Preview period: Manufacturers send email alerts, coupons or early-access notices.
- One to two weeks before the holiday: Retailers begin selected laptop promotions while competing listings are still incomplete.
- Holiday week: Best Buy, Dell, Walmart, Amazon, Lenovo, HP and other sellers typically broaden participation, but inventory can change quickly.
- Final day and extension: Some offers continue after Memorial Day; others disappear when a configuration sells out.

Should you buy early or wait?
Buy early when
- The exact processor, memory, storage, screen and graphics meet your needs.
- The price is supported by recent market comparisons, not just MSRP.
- The model is popular, customized or likely to sell out.
- You need delivery before travel, work or the school year.
- The seller offers a useful return period or applicable price adjustment.
Wait when
- The deal relies on a large “was” price with no evidence of normal selling prices.
- The laptop has 8GB RAM, 128GB Windows storage, an old processor, dim display or poor cooling at a premium price.
- The listing is marketplace-sold and warranty or returns are unclear.
- The headline says “up to” a large saving but the attractive models are excluded.
- The discounted machine is an outgoing generation that may soon be replaced.
Waiting for the holiday itself is not a guarantee of a lower price. An early offer can match or beat the final-day price, while waiting can reduce configuration and stock choices.

Processor
Compare the exact Intel, AMD, Apple, Qualcomm or Chromebook platform and generation. A familiar brand name alone does not establish performance or software compatibility.

Memory and storage
For a main Windows or macOS computer, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD are sensible targets when the price difference is reasonable. Eight gigabytes is an entry-level compromise. A 128GB Chromebook can work for cloud-first use but leaves little room for local files.
Display and graphics
Check resolution, brightness, panel type, aspect ratio and refresh rate. Integrated graphics suit office work and casual games; demanding games and creator applications generally require a capable integrated platform or discrete GPU.
Mobility, ports and support
Verify weight, battery expectations, USB-C charging, USB-A, HDMI, headphone connectivity, Wi-Fi generation and whether a dock is needed. Confirm whether RAM and storage are replaceable or soldered, then check the operating-system edition, seller, warranty and return terms.

Budget Windows laptop

Chromebook
Chromebooks suit browsing, school portals, Google Workspace, streaming and cloud applications. They are poor fits for Windows-only software, full desktop Adobe applications, demanding local editing and high-end gaming. Treat 128GB storage as a constraint, not a footnote.
Everyday productivity or business
Dell 14 Plus and Dell 16 Plus-type offers should be compared with similarly priced Windows models and MacBooks on memory, storage, display, webcam, ports, security features and warranty. A business model may justify a higher price for support and manageability.
MacBook
MacBooks can offer strong performance and battery life, but memory and storage upgrades are expensive and gaming compatibility is narrower. Verify that required professional or school software runs on macOS before buying. Apple’s direct store is Apple’s Mac buying page; retailer gift-card promotions may matter more than an Apple price cut.

A 17-inch LG gram-style machine can combine a large workspace with relatively low weight, but check the measured weight, charger size, battery conditions and port selection. Large screens are less convenient for frequent commuters.

Gaming or creator laptop
Evaluate GPU model and wattage, cooling, screen refresh rate, RAM and SSD capacity, battery expectations, charger size and upgrade access. Large dollar savings on Alienware or Legion models do not offset an older GPU, excessive noise or poor portability.

- Record the exact model or configuration number, not just a family name such as “MacBook Air” or “Dell 14 Plus.”
- Identify the seller and fulfillment method. Amazon and Walmart listings can be marketplace offers rather than first-party inventory.
- Separate MSRP, previous selling price and recent street price. HP states that its strikethrough MSRP may not represent the prevailing market price.
- Check whether a coupon requires email signup, membership, student or military eligibility, a minimum spend or a separate checkout code.
- Read return, warranty, shipping and restocking terms before paying.
- Save the price and stock status with a timestamp; deal pages can become stale within hours.

Memorial Day can produce worthwhile savings, but discounts are less predictable and often less aggressive than Black Friday or major mid-summer events.
