For most investors building a dividend-growth portfolio, Abbott Laboratories is the stronger default choice. Its documented dividend record is longer in the latest company materials, recent increases have been solid, and its Medical Devices business showed strong reported and organic growth. Medtronic is a credible alternative for investors who place more weight on a large recurring per-share payout, broad medical-device exposure and recently improved cash generation.

Neither dividend is guaranteed, and the better purchase depends on the price you pay. Check each stock’s current share price, forward yield, payout ratio and valuation immediately before buying; those live figures were not established in the cited company releases.

What the comparison comes down to

Medtronic and Abbott are both established healthcare companies with long dividend histories, but they offer different versions of the income-and-growth trade-off. Abbott currently presents the cleaner dividend-growth case: its latest release describes a 54-year run of increases, while Medtronic’s investor-relations overview reports 48 years. Abbott also reported strong recent Medical Devices momentum and issued a 2026 adjusted earnings outlook that gives investors a framework for judging future raises.

Medtronic’s appeal is different. Its 2025 dividend totaled $2.83 per share, and its FY2026 proxy documents $7.3 billion of operating cash flow and $5.4 billion of free cash flow. Those figures show substantial cash generation, although the company’s cash-flow and earnings measures must still be monitored against the demands of dividends, investment and any share repurchases.

The practical decision is therefore not “which company has a dividend?” Both do. It is whether you prefer Abbott’s stronger documented growth credentials and recent operating momentum, or Medtronic’s payout scale and cash-flow recovery. A current valuation check can change the ranking at any given purchase date.

Dividend history and recent increases

Measure Medtronic Abbott Laboratories
Consecutive annual dividend-growth record 48 years, according to Medtronic Investor Relations (2026) 54 years in Abbott’s January 2026 results release; an earlier 2025 announcement referred to the 53rd consecutive year
Most recent annual per-share amount documented $2.83 paid during calendar 2025 $2.40 declared during 2025
Recent increase information 2025 quarterly payments were $0.70, $0.71, $0.71 and $0.71 2025 amount rose 7.1% from $2.24 in 2024; quarterly rate increased from $0.59 to $0.63 for the payment made in February 2026
Other continuity evidence Company overview emphasizes 48 years of growing the dividend Abbott says it has paid dividends for more than 100 consecutive years, including its 404th consecutive quarterly dividend in the cited announcement

The apparent 53-versus-54 difference in Abbott materials is a timing issue rather than a contradiction in the underlying record. The 2025 announcement described the increase then being declared; the January 2026 results release counted the next completed year. For a current comparison, use the latest release and date the figure to the January 2026 publication.

Why the streak matters

A long streak demonstrates that management has historically protected the dividend through different business and economic conditions. It does not establish a permanent promise. Future increases still depend on earnings, cash flow, capital-allocation priorities, regulation, product performance and currency movements.

Why per-share payout size can mislead

Medtronic’s annual amount and Abbott’s annual amount cannot be compared as if the larger dollar figure automatically meant a higher yield or safer income. Yield is the annual dividend divided by the current share price, and the two companies’ share prices are different. A stock with the smaller per-share payment can offer the higher yield if its price is lower, while a larger payment can represent a modest yield at a higher price.

Cash flow and earnings support

Fiscal period and source Revenue Earnings measure Operating cash flow Free cash flow Capital returned
Medtronic FY2026 proxy and SEC filing $36.4 billion; up 8.4% reported and 5.8% organically GAAP diluted EPS of $3.73 $7.3 billion $5.4 billion $4.2 billion through dividends and net share repurchases
Medtronic FY2025 release $33.537 billion worldwide revenue $5.49 non-GAAP diluted EPS Not reported in the cited release $5.185 billion Not reported in the cited release
Abbott 2026 results release Fourth-quarter Medical Devices sales grew 12.3% reported and 10.4% organically Full-year 2026 adjusted diluted EPS outlook of $5.55 to $5.80 Not reported in the cited release Not reported in the cited release Not reported in the cited release

Medtronic’s FY2026 figures show a year in which operating cash flow and free cash flow improved enough to support both distributions and net repurchases. The $4.2 billion capital-return figure combines dividends with buybacks, so it should not be treated as dividend coverage by itself. To judge coverage precisely, an investor needs the dividend cash paid separately and the company’s definition of free cash flow.

The FY2025 release supplies a useful prior-year reference point: free cash flow was $5.185 billion, while the later proxy reports $5.4 billion for FY2026. The change indicates improvement, but a two-year comparison is not a guarantee that the trend will continue. Medical-device demand, manufacturing costs, product launches, litigation, foreign-exchange rates and regulatory decisions can all affect future cash generation.

Abbott’s cited release gives investors a forward earnings range rather than a comparable free-cash-flow figure. Adjusted diluted EPS guidance of $5.55 to $5.80 can help frame the capacity for future dividend growth, but adjusted EPS is not the same as cash available for distribution. Review Abbott’s cash-flow statement, debt maturities and dividend cash payments in the latest filing before treating the earnings outlook as evidence of coverage.

Operating momentum and business exposure

Abbott: stronger recent Medical Devices growth

Abbott reported fourth-quarter 2025 Medical Devices sales growth of 12.3% on a reported basis and 10.4% organically. The organic figure removes certain currency and acquisition effects, making it a useful indicator of underlying momentum, while the reported figure reflects what appeared in the financial statements. Both measures describe one quarter, not a full-year guarantee.

Abbott’s 2026 adjusted diluted EPS outlook of $5.55 to $5.80 provides a range rather than a single target. Investors should compare subsequent quarterly results with that range and watch whether growth is broad-based or concentrated in one product area. Strong device sales can support investment and dividend increases, but execution must persist beyond the reported quarter.

Medtronic: broad device portfolio and improving cash generation

Medtronic’s FY2026 proxy reports $36.4 billion of revenue, with growth of 8.4% as reported and 5.8% organically. That combination indicates that acquisitions, currency or other non-organic factors contributed to the reported result; the organic rate is the cleaner measure of underlying expansion. The company’s broad medical-device portfolio gives it exposure across multiple procedures and markets, but breadth also creates execution complexity.

The FY2025 release reported $33.537 billion of worldwide revenue and $5.49 of non-GAAP diluted EPS. Because the FY2025 EPS measure is non-GAAP while the FY2026 proxy figure is GAAP diluted EPS, the two numbers should not be read as a clean year-over-year EPS trend without reconciling the adjustments. Use the company’s reconciliations when assessing profitability.

Which dividend is safer?

Dividend safety is a probability judgment, not a label a company can guarantee. A useful assessment combines four tests:

  • Cash coverage: Compare dividends paid with operating cash flow and free cash flow over several years, not one quarter.
  • Earnings coverage: Examine both GAAP and adjusted earnings, then understand the adjustments before using a payout ratio.
  • Balance-sheet flexibility: Review debt, interest costs, pension obligations and upcoming maturities.
  • Business resilience: Look for diversified revenue, recurring demand and the ability to maintain products through regulatory or supply disruptions.

Medtronic has a documented cash-flow data point in its FY2026 proxy: $7.3 billion of operating cash flow and $5.4 billion of free cash flow. That supports the view that the dividend is backed by substantial cash generation in that fiscal year. It does not prove that every future year will look the same, and the combined $4.2 billion return figure does not isolate dividends from repurchases.

Abbott’s longer increase history and more than a century of dividend payments are meaningful evidence of continuity. The cited materials do not provide a directly comparable current free-cash-flow or payout-ratio figure, so investors should obtain those numbers from Abbott’s latest filing before assigning a higher safety score. A long record reduces uncertainty about management’s priorities; it does not remove operating or valuation risk.

Yield, valuation and the price you pay

A dividend comparison without a current price is incomplete. The cited company materials establish payout amounts and growth records, but they do not establish a live share price, current yield, forward price-to-earnings ratio or enterprise-value multiple. Those metrics change every trading day and must be refreshed immediately before an order.

Calculate the starting yield

  1. Find the latest declared quarterly dividend for each company.
  2. Multiply that quarterly amount by four only as an annualized run rate; do not assume the company has declared four identical future payments.
  3. Divide the annualized amount by the current share price.
  4. Record the date and time of the calculation, because the yield moves with the stock price.

For Abbott, the stated $0.63 quarterly rate would equal $2.52 over four payments if it remained unchanged. That is an annualized calculation, not a new company declaration. For Medtronic, use the latest declared quarterly rate rather than automatically carrying forward the 2025 calendar total.

Check valuation alongside yield

  1. Use the latest trailing and forward EPS figures from the companies’ filings or an established market-data source.
  2. Compare each price-to-earnings ratio with the company’s own history and with its expected earnings growth.
  3. Review free-cash-flow yield where the data are consistently defined.
  4. Stress-test the purchase at a lower earnings outcome and a higher required yield.

A high yield can reflect an attractive income opportunity, but it can also signal that investors expect slower growth or greater risk. Conversely, a lower yield can accompany faster dividend growth but leave less income today. The correct choice depends on your required income, holding period and tolerance for price volatility.

How different investors might choose

Choose Abbott when dividend growth is the priority

  • You value the longer latest-documented increase streak.
  • You prefer recent increases of roughly the same scale as Abbott’s 2025 raise.
  • You want exposure to the reported and organic momentum in Medical Devices.
  • You are willing to accept a potentially lower starting yield if the valuation and growth outlook justify it.

Abbott is the better default for an investor whose primary objective is to compound income over many years. Confirm that the purchase price is reasonable and that cash-flow coverage supports the earnings outlook.

Choose Medtronic when income scale and device breadth matter more

  • You place a high value on the documented 2025 per-share payout.
  • You want a company with 48 years of dividend growth and a broad medical-device portfolio.
  • You are encouraged by the FY2026 operating- and free-cash-flow figures.
  • You accept that the recent growth record is shorter than Abbott’s and that cash-flow recovery must be monitored.

Medtronic can fit an income-focused portfolio when its live yield and valuation compensate for the additional execution and growth uncertainty you identify.

Split the allocation only for a reason

Owning both stocks can diversify company-specific risk, but it does not automatically improve a portfolio. A combined position still concentrates exposure in healthcare regulation, device reimbursement, procedure volumes, foreign exchange and sector valuation. If you buy both, define the role of each holding and set a rebalancing rule rather than purchasing them simply because both have long streaks.

A practical due-diligence checklist

  1. Refresh market data: Record the current price, annualized dividend, forward yield and valuation multiple for both stocks on the same date.
  2. Verify the dividend: Check the latest declaration, ex-dividend date, payment date and any change from the prior quarter.
  3. Read the latest filing: Review operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt, share count and the exact definition of any adjusted metric.
  4. Test coverage: Compare dividends paid with free cash flow over multiple fiscal years and investigate any shortfall.
  5. Separate reported from organic growth: Determine how much revenue change came from acquisitions, currency or other factors.
  6. Assess execution: Read management’s discussion of product launches, manufacturing, regulatory matters and supply constraints.
  7. Set a purchase limit: Decide the maximum valuation or minimum yield you will accept before submitting an order.
  8. Plan monitoring: Recheck results at each earnings release and revisit the thesis if cash generation, guidance or the dividend policy changes.

Risks that can interrupt dividend growth

Regulatory and product risk

Medical devices require regulatory compliance and dependable product execution. Delays, recalls, safety issues or unfavorable rulings can reduce sales and raise costs. A diversified portfolio can soften one setback, but it cannot eliminate company-wide consequences.

Currency and geographic risk

Both companies report internationally. Currency movements can make reported growth differ from organic growth and can change the value of overseas cash flows. Compare both measures and avoid treating a single reported-growth percentage as a permanent operating rate.

Procedure-volume and reimbursement risk

Demand for devices depends partly on procedure volumes, hospital budgets and reimbursement decisions. A strong quarter can weaken if customers delay purchases or payment policies change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valuation risk

Even a safe, growing dividend can produce a poor investment return when bought at an excessive price. Price declines can also make a rising dividend feel less dependable to an investor who may need to sell. Include an entry valuation in the decision rather than choosing solely by streak length or current yield.

Bottom line for MDT versus ABT

Abbott is the stronger default dividend-growth stock because its latest materials show the longer increase streak, meaningful recent raises and encouraging Medical Devices growth. Medtronic remains a reasonable income candidate: its 2025 payout was substantial, its dividend has grown for 48 years, and FY2026 cash flow improved materially. The final decision should be made only after refreshing each stock’s price, yield, payout ratio and valuation, then matching those figures to your income needs and tolerance for medical-device execution risk.
