If an IRS notice is sitting unanswered, start with the notice number and response deadline, then preserve a copy and collect the records it cites. McMullen Tax Service says its Palestine-based practice helps Tyler-area taxpayers identify the issue, compare IRS information with their records, and assign the next steps in writing. The firm also advises individuals, churches, farms, and small businesses to review withholding and year-end decisions before December 31, 2026. Enrolled Agent John Wisener can represent taxpayers before the IRS on examinations, collection matters, appeals, and other proceedings.

What should I do first after receiving an IRS notice?

Read the notice number and response date before calling anyone, and keep the entire mailing with your tax records. Missing a deadline can limit your options, while an early review gives you time to obtain documents and correct misunderstandings.

  1. Identify the notice. Record the CP, Letter, or other number, the tax year, the IRS phone number, and the date by which you must respond.
  2. Preserve copies. Scan or photocopy every page, including vouchers and reply envelopes. Keep proof of mailing or electronic submission.
  3. Gather the referenced records. Assemble Forms W-2 and 1099, brokerage statements, payment confirmations, business books, depreciation schedules, and any correspondence tied to the issue.
  4. Compare the IRS information with your records. Look for a missing form, duplicate income, incorrect withholding, or a payment that was applied to the wrong period.
  5. Set responsibilities in writing. McMullen says its intake process confirms the deadline, creates a tailored document list, compares IRS data with client records, and records what the firm and taxpayer will each do.

Do not ignore a notice because the amount looks small or because you believe the IRS is wrong. The response date remains important even when the proposed change is disputed.

How do I respond to a CP2000 notice?

A CP2000 is generally a proposed income or payment mismatch based on third-party information reported to the IRS. It is not automatically a bill or an audit. You can agree, partially agree, or disagree, but each choice should be supported by records.

If the information is correct

Confirm the income or payment, follow the notice instructions, and determine whether an amended return, additional tax, interest, or a payment arrangement is required. A tax professional can check whether the proposed change affects other items on the return.

If the information is partly correct

Explain which amount is accurate and which is not. Include documents that reconcile the difference, such as corrected Forms 1099, basis records, payroll statements, or proof that income was reported elsewhere.

If the information is wrong

Disagree in writing by the stated deadline and attach evidence. Keep the original records and send copies unless the IRS specifically requests originals.

An examination is a closer review that may be handled by mail or in person. Collection notices generally follow an assessed balance that remains unpaid, so the remedy and urgency can differ from a CP2000 response.

Can an enrolled agent represent me in an IRS audit or payment problem?

Yes. The IRS grants enrolled agents unlimited representation rights. An EA may represent taxpayers in audits, collection matters, appeals, and other matters before any IRS office, not only in the tax year the agent prepared.

IRS guidance describes EA status as the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. The credential is earned through the three-part Special Enrollment Examination or qualifying former-IRS experience, and enrolled agents must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years. CPAs and attorneys also have unlimited representation rights; many other preparers have more limited rights.

For a notice or payment problem, ask who will communicate with the IRS, who will assemble documents, and how authorizations will be handled. McMullen Tax Service is led by John Wisener, an enrolled agent, and serves clients nationally for federal representation while operating from Palestine, Texas.

What should I do before December 31, 2026 to lower my tax bill?

Year-end planning works best when it combines tax rules with cash-flow and documentation decisions. McMullen recommends checking withholding, reviewing documentation for new-law provisions, and evaluating business equipment timing before December 31, 2026. Eligibility for temporary deductions and depreciation provisions depends on the taxpayer and the property, so confirm current IRS rules before acting.

Check withholding and estimated payments

Federal tax is pay-as-you-go. After a change in wages, marital status, dependents, investment income, retirement distributions, or tax law, employees can submit a new Form W-4. Income without withholding may require estimated payments. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can indicate whether Form W-4 or Form W-4P information should change.

Use the correct 2026 standard deduction

Filing status 2026 standard deduction
Single or married filing separately $16,100
Head of household $24,150
Married filing jointly or surviving spouse $32,200

These are the official federal amounts for 2026 returns filed in 2027. Compare the standard deduction with allowable itemized deductions rather than assuming one method is always better.

Document new-law items

The firm identifies temporary provisions affecting 2026 returns, including deductions for qualified tips, qualified overtime, and certain taxpayers age 65 or older, along with business depreciation and Section 179 changes. Keep payroll records, employer statements, age documentation, and asset invoices that establish eligibility. The law-specific rules and limits should be checked against current IRS guidance.

Evaluate equipment purchases without sacrificing cash

A deduction reduces taxable income; it does not reimburse the full purchase price. Decide first whether the equipment is needed and whether the business can afford it. Wisener cautions that borrowing to avoid a tax bill can create a larger liability: “It’s so much better to pay the taxes rather than go into debt to avoid the taxes.”

Does a tax preparer in Tyler handle church, farm, or small-business taxes?

McMullen Tax Service lists specialized support for each of these groups. The office is at 6000 TX-256 Loop in Palestine rather than in a separate Tyler storefront, but Tyler clients can use phone, email, text, or in-person appointments.

Churches and ministers

Ministers generally have dual treatment: income-tax employee treatment and self-employment-tax treatment for Social Security and Medicare. A properly designated housing allowance may be excluded from federal income tax while remaining subject to self-employment tax. The practice also handles church payroll, Forms 941 and 940, and year-end W-2 and 1099 packages.

Farms and ranches

Seasonal and uneven income can make withholding and estimates difficult. Planning may involve equipment purchases, depreciation elections, commodity-sale timing, and special estimated-tax options. Accurate production, sales, and asset records are essential.

Small businesses

Listed services include entity planning, depreciation strategy, accountable reimbursement plans, withholding and estimated payments, payroll, bookkeeping, QuickBooks cleanup or migration, and benefits guidance. Owners should bring current books, payroll filings, fixed-asset lists, and prior-year returns to a planning meeting.

How can Tyler-area taxpayers contact McMullen Tax Service?

McMullen Tax Service has served East Texas taxpayers for more than 40 years, and Wisener has more than 25 years in ministry. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ask for more time to answer an IRS notice?

Some notices allow additional time, but an extension is not automatic. Call the IRS number printed on the notice or have an authorized representative request guidance before the stated deadline, and document the conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What authorization lets an enrolled agent speak with the IRS?

The taxpayer generally signs an IRS power-of-attorney or information-authorization form identifying the tax matters and periods involved. The representative can then communicate within the scope granted by that authorization.

Will an IRS notice always lead to an audit?

No. A notice can request information, propose a mismatch adjustment, confirm a payment, or begin collection activity. An examination is a separate, closer review that may occur by correspondence or in person.

Should I buy business equipment solely for a tax deduction?

No. First confirm that the purchase serves a genuine business need and will not damage cash flow. The tax deduction offsets only part of the cost, while financing creates repayment obligations.
