There is no single substitute for Marvell across data-center silicon. The right alternative depends on the layer you are buying: merchant Ethernet or PCIe switches, optical interconnect, scale-up fabrics, or a custom accelerator designed with a hyperscaler.
Broadcom is the strongest sourced comparison for custom AI silicon. NVIDIA is a major integrated AI-infrastructure and networking supplier, but its relationship with Marvell includes the March 2026 NVLink Fusion partnership as well as competitive overlap. Marvell’s distinguishing breadth is the combination of Teralynx Ethernet and PCIe switching, optical connectivity components, and co-designed custom silicon.

What “Marvell alternatives” actually means
Marvell serves several semiconductor layers that are purchased and designed into systems separately. A company replacing a Teralynx switch is making a different decision from a hyperscaler commissioning a custom AI accelerator, and neither decision is the same as selecting an optical DSP or a scale-up interconnect.

- Integration model: merchant components selected by an infrastructure team, or a co-designed system built around one hyperscaler’s workload and operating model.
There is no common independent benchmark, price sheet, or complete deployment comparison covering Marvell, Broadcom, and NVIDIA across all of those dimensions. A bandwidth number by itself therefore cannot establish that two products are interchangeable.
Marvell’s portfolio and the layers an alternative must replace
Ethernet and PCIe switching
Marvell describes its data-center switch portfolio as Ethernet and PCIe switch silicon, led by the Teralynx family. Its portfolio maps Teralynx products to scale-out and scale-across networks and identifies PCIe switches for scale-up systems.
On its scale-out materials, Marvell describes Teralynx coverage from 12.8T to 102.4T. Those figures are vendor-stated portfolio ranges, not an independent performance comparison. The same broader stack includes optical DSPs, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), laser drivers, optical engines, active electrical cable (AEC) DSPs, and telemetry.

Marvell’s scale-up portfolio spans PCIe, UALink, ESUN, and NVLink-compatible protocols. The company identifies the Teralynx T100 as an Ethernet bridge in this portfolio. Marvell also notes that scale-up protocols are still developing and that multiple approaches exist. That means a buyer should confirm protocol support, software interoperability, topology, and roadmap status rather than treating every “scale-up” label as equivalent.
Custom AI silicon and foundational IP
Marvell says its custom products are co-designed for a single hyperscaler’s workload and infrastructure strategy. Its fiscal 2026 annual report lists custom ASIC capabilities including:

Its interconnect portfolio includes PAM and coherent or coherent-lite DSPs, laser drivers, TIAs, silicon photonics, CPO and linear-drive pluggable (LPO) chipsets, data-center interconnect, AEC DSPs, and PCIe retimers. These are infrastructure semiconductor components, not consumer networking products that can normally be purchased as a finished retail switch.
Broadcom: the clearest custom-AI-silicon alternative
For a hyperscaler seeking a custom accelerator or an ASIC platform partner, Broadcom is the strongest named alternative in the available evidence. In a July 16, 2026 assessment, Gartner stated: “Broadcom is the Company to Beat for Custom AI Silicon.” Gartner’s rationale cited Broadcom’s combination of ASIC design, networking, foundational IP, advanced packaging, SerDes, memory, and die-to-die interconnect.

Those capabilities overlap directly with the requirements of a custom AI program: the accelerator itself, high-speed links, memory attachment, packaging, and the interfaces needed to connect many devices. The comparison is about design and integration capability, not simply a finished switch specification.
Broadcom’s concrete switching evidence
Broadcom lists the BCM78900 as a “51.2 Tb/s StrataXGS® Tomahawk® 5 Ethernet Switch.” This establishes a data-center Ethernet switching product and a stated switching capacity. It does not establish a complete specification-by-specification match against any Teralynx device. No equivalent details such as port configuration, packet-buffer behavior, telemetry implementation, software features, optical modules, power, or pricing are stated for both vendors.
Broadcom is therefore the most defensible alternative when the requirement is custom AI silicon or a high-end merchant Ethernet switching platform. A procurement team should still request the exact SKU, supported optics, software stack, interoperability evidence, supply terms, and lifecycle commitments before declaring the products equivalent.

NVIDIA: integrated AI infrastructure, photonics, and a partner relationship
NVIDIA is relevant when the buyer wants an integrated AI infrastructure approach rather than an isolated merchant component. Its silicon-photonics materials list Quantum-X InfiniBand Photonics switches and Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switches.
NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics as planned for availability in the second half of 2026. That is a forward-looking vendor statement; availability and timing should be reconfirmed against current product documentation and regional supply before a purchasing decision.
NVIDIA also publishes performance claims about the benefits of co-packaged optics. Those claims should be treated as NVIDIA’s own statements, not as independent comparative test results. The available evidence does not establish a universal performance lead for NVIDIA, Marvell, or Broadcom in optical networking.
Why NVIDIA is not a simple Marvell substitute
On March 31, 2026, Marvell and NVIDIA announced an NVLink Fusion partnership. Under the announcement, Marvell will provide custom XPUs and NVLink Fusion-compatible scale-up networking. NVIDIA will provide platform components including Vera CPUs, ConnectX NICs, BlueField DPUs, NVLink, and Spectrum-X switches.
This puts the companies in both partnership and competition. NVIDIA can be an alternative supplier for an integrated AI platform, InfiniBand or Ethernet networking, and photonics. At the same time, Marvell may supply components that participate in an NVIDIA-centered architecture. Calling NVIDIA a direct replacement for every Marvell component would therefore be inaccurate.

The table shows why “which company is better?” is the wrong first question. The relevant question is which supplier covers the specific layer, protocol, and integration boundary in your design.

Scale-out Ethernet
Scale-out connects servers, accelerator nodes, and racks. Compare Ethernet switch capacity, port speeds and configurations, buffering, telemetry, congestion management, optics support, software interfaces, and power. Marvell’s Teralynx range and Broadcom’s BCM78900 provide concrete evidence that both companies address high-capacity Ethernet switching, but the available material does not provide an apples-to-apples specification matrix.
NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet approach may fit a buyer seeking a broader integrated platform. Confirm whether the required switches, NICs, DPUs, optics, and software are available in the desired region and deployment window.
Scale-across fabrics
Scale-across links clusters or groups of systems. The decision can involve Ethernet, InfiniBand, optical engines, AECs, and telemetry. A component supplier may be preferable when the organization already operates a multi-vendor fabric; an integrated platform may reduce interface risk but increase dependence on one vendor’s roadmap.

Scale-up connects accelerators, CPUs, memory, and other components inside a node or tightly coupled system. Marvell lists PCIe, UALink, ESUN, and NVLink-compatible options and warns that the standards landscape is still developing. Require a written interoperability plan, protocol revision, firmware support period, and migration path before selecting a design.

Step-by-step vendor selection process
- Define the workload and topology. Document accelerator count, host CPUs, memory attachment, rack scale, expected east-west traffic, latency targets, and whether the fabric is scale-out, scale-across, scale-up, or all three.
- Separate merchant silicon from custom silicon. A switch replacement can be evaluated through interface and software requirements. A custom accelerator program requires architecture, verification, packaging, memory, SerDes, software enablement, manufacturing, and long-term support.
- Write the protocol requirement. Specify Ethernet, InfiniBand, PCIe, UALink, ESUN, NVLink-compatible links, or a mixed design. “AI networking” is not precise enough for a request for proposal.
- Map optical dependencies. List DSPs, TIAs, laser drivers, optical engines, CPO or LPO requirements, AECs, retimers, and pluggable optics. Decide which parts must come from one supplier and which can be multi-sourced.
- Request like-for-like data. Ask each supplier for port maps, switching capacity definition, latency, buffer architecture, telemetry, supported optics, power, thermal limits, firmware, software APIs, lifecycle, and qualification evidence. Do not infer equivalence from a headline terabit figure.
- Check roadmap and availability. Confirm production status, sampling dates, geographic supply, and end-of-life policy. NVIDIA’s second-half-2026 Spectrum-X photonics statement is specifically a planned availability claim and should be rechecked.
- Evaluate integration risk. Compare a multi-vendor merchant design with an integrated platform. Consider debugging ownership, software compatibility, observability, security updates, and the number of interfaces your team must validate.
- Model commercial exposure. Obtain non-public quotations and capacity commitments. Public materials reviewed here do not establish comparable pricing for Marvell, Broadcom, or NVIDIA components.
What Marvell’s financial mix says about its strategic position
Marvell’s fiscal 2026 figures show why its alternatives cannot be evaluated as a minor product-line question. According to Marvell’s May 2026 proxy statement, approximately three-quarters of total revenue came from data center in fiscal 2026. Within data center, optical interconnect represented roughly half of revenue and custom silicon approximately one-quarter. Marvell also reported about 50% compound annual growth in optical interconnect for five straight years.

These numbers explain Marvell’s breadth: optical connectivity and custom silicon are central businesses, while switching and interconnect products support the same AI data-center architectures. They should not be mistaken for independent market-share measurements or a guarantee of future growth.
Pricing, availability, and evidence limits
Enterprise networking silicon is generally sold through design-in, volume, and supply agreements rather than a transparent retail price list. The available evidence does not establish per-chip pricing, system cost, licensing fees, minimum order quantities, or deployment costs for any of the named suppliers.
It also does not establish a common independent benchmark, verified production deployment comparison, or universal performance winner. Product pages and vendor announcements describe scope and capabilities; they do not replace qualification testing in the buyer’s own topology.
Roadmaps deserve particular caution. NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics timing is stated as planned for the second half of 2026, and scale-up protocols cited by Marvell are still developing. Reconfirm status, specifications, and interoperability close to the purchase date.
Bottom line for each buying scenario
- Custom AI accelerator or ASIC program: Start with Broadcom as the clearest sourced alternative, then compare architecture, packaging, memory, SerDes, software, manufacturing, and support commitments against Marvell’s co-design offering.
- High-capacity merchant Ethernet switching: Compare Marvell Teralynx with products such as Broadcom’s 51.2 Tb/s BCM78900 using full port, buffer, software, optics, power, and lifecycle specifications rather than bandwidth alone.
- Integrated AI networking platform: Evaluate NVIDIA when an architecture built around its CPUs, NICs, DPUs, NVLink, InfiniBand, or Spectrum-X is desirable, while recognizing that NVIDIA and Marvell also cooperate through NVLink Fusion.
- Optical interconnect: Treat Marvell’s DSP, photonics, CPO, LPO, TIA, driver, and optical-engine breadth as a central differentiator, and compare the exact component and packaging boundary being sourced.
- Scale-up fabric: Lock down protocol and interoperability requirements first because PCIe, UALink, ESUN, and NVLink-compatible approaches are not interchangeable by label alone.
Marvell alternatives are therefore a set of layer-specific choices, not one replacement product. Broadcom is the strongest documented custom-AI comparison, NVIDIA is a significant integrated-platform and photonics option with a partner relationship to Marvell, and Marvell remains differentiated by combining switching, optical connectivity, and hyperscaler co-designed silicon.
