The dates can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. For any transaction, check the specific exchange, broker, bank, settlement service, asset class and country involved.
What each type of holiday actually controls
Exchange or market holidays
An exchange holiday is a date on which a particular venue does not hold its ordinary trading session. The rule applies to that exchange and the products listed there, not automatically to every market or financial institution.

If an exchange is closed, orders normally cannot execute in its regular session. Your broker’s app may still accept an order, display prices from another venue or allow you to schedule an instruction, but acceptance of an order is not the same as execution. The exchange’s own calendar controls whether its session is running.

Bank and Federal Reserve holidays
A bank holiday concerns a bank, a central-bank office or a financial service. The Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule describes Federal Reserve observances and informs operation of Federal Reserve financial services. It does not function as a universal stock-market calendar.
A bank branch, wire service, automated clearing service or cash operation can follow a holiday schedule that differs from the exchange where your investment trades. A bank may be closed while an exchange is open, or an exchange may be closed while some banking functions are available.
“Bank holiday” is also not a single operating rule. A commercial bank’s branches, online banking, wire desk and back-office processing can have different cutoffs. A Federal Reserve Bank or branch and the Board of Governors can apply different weekend-observance rules. Read the notice for the named institution and service, not just the holiday name.

Both calendars use familiar public-holiday names, and some dates overlap. The operational question is different, however: an exchange calendar answers “Can this venue hold its trading session?” A bank or Federal Reserve calendar answers “Are this institution and its payment or clearing services operating under their standard schedule?”
A date can therefore be a public holiday, a Federal Reserve observance, an exchange closure, an early-close session, or an ordinary business day for a particular provider. Those labels should not be collapsed into one generic list.
What the U.S. 2026 calendars demonstrate
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Federal Reserve provide a useful U.S. example. Their 2026 schedules are not identical.
| Date or session | NYSE 2026 schedule | Federal Reserve 2026 schedule | What an investor should infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday, April 3 | Listed as a market holiday. | Not identified in the Federal Reserve holiday list cited here. | NYSE trading is unavailable for that regular session, but do not assume every bank or payment service follows the same closure. |
| Columbus Day, October 12 | Not listed among the NYSE closures cited here. | Listed as a Federal Reserve holiday. | The NYSE can have a regular session while Federal Reserve observances affect relevant banking or payment operations. |
| Veterans Day, November 11 | Not listed among the NYSE closures cited here. | Listed as a Federal Reserve holiday. | Do not use the Federal Reserve list to decide whether the NYSE is open. |
| Session after Thanksgiving | NYSE identifies an early close in its 2026 schedule. | Use the applicable Federal Reserve and service schedule separately. | This is a shortened exchange session, not a full-day NYSE closure. |
| Christmas Eve | NYSE identifies an early close in its 2026 schedule. | Use the applicable Federal Reserve and service schedule separately. | Orders and market data can be subject to a shortened session; verify the year’s notice before trading. |
These are U.S. 2026 examples, not a rule for every exchange, country or financial institution. The NYSE publishes its own holiday and early-close notices, while Federal Reserve Banks and branches follow the Federal Reserve schedule for their observances and services.
The examples answer a narrow question: what do these two official calendars say for these named institutions in 2026? They do not establish that all U.S. banks close on every Federal Reserve date, nor that every exchange follows the NYSE list. A broker can also publish a customer-facing schedule that reflects its own processing arrangements.

Why investors need both calendars
Trading and money movement are separate processes
An order can execute on an open exchange even when a payment or clearing service is not processing normally. Conversely, a bank may be able to receive or send certain instructions on a day when the exchange needed for a trade is closed.
The Federal Reserve’s operating guidance states: “Transactional activity related to Fedwire Funds, Fedwire Securities, National Settlement Service, ACH, Check and Cash Service only takes place on standard business days, and as a result, any related clearings for those services will not be processed on the above holidays.” That statement addresses the listed Federal Reserve services; it does not establish a customer-specific settlement date for every broker, security or account.
What this means for a trade
Execution, clearing and final cash movement can involve different organizations. The exchange handles the trading session; a broker routes and records your order; clearing organizations and banks move money or securities; and a payment network may observe its own business-day rules. A calendar mismatch can therefore delay a deposit, withdrawal, transfer or delivery even when the trade itself was possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that an order filled near a holiday will produce cash or securities on the timetable shown for an ordinary week. The responsible broker or settlement service must account for its own business days, cutoffs and any closure affecting an intermediary. Ask for the applicable date rather than calculating one from the exchange calendar alone.
International payments add another calendar
Federal Reserve Financial Services notes that foreign-country holidays can affect FedGlobal ACH payment processing. An international payment may therefore depend on the U.S. service calendar, the receiving country’s holiday calendar and the participating institutions’ cutoffs. A domestic market calendar cannot answer that question by itself.
The sending bank, intermediary and receiving institution may each apply a different local schedule. A payment instruction submitted before a U.S. closure can still wait for a foreign-country business day or a receiving bank’s next processing window.
How a holiday affects different order instructions
Holiday errors are not limited to whether a market opens. The type of order and its duration can change what happens when a session is closed or shortened.
- Market orders: If the venue is closed, a broker may hold the instruction for the next eligible session rather than execute it immediately. A later opening price is not guaranteed.
- Limit orders: A limit instruction may remain pending, expire under its time-in-force rule or become eligible only during a later session. Confirm how the broker handles an order entered on a closure or early-close date.
- Stop and other time-sensitive orders: A shortened session leaves less time for an order to trigger or fill. The broker’s handling of overnight and next-session instructions matters.
- Recurring or scheduled orders: An automatic investment or transfer can be moved to another business day by the provider. Check whether the provider uses the exchange calendar, its bank calendar or a separate processing calendar.
- Orders routed to more than one venue: One venue may be open while another is closed. The app’s ability to display a quote or accept an order does not identify which venue will execute it.
These are operational possibilities, not promises about a particular broker. Read the broker’s holiday and order-status notice for the product you trade.

How to compare a market calendar with a bank calendar
Use the following five dimensions instead of asking whether a date is simply a “market holiday.”
| Comparison point | Exchange calendar | Bank or Federal Reserve calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Institution or operator | The named exchange or trading venue, such as the NYSE. | A Federal Reserve Bank, branch, Board of Governors office, commercial bank or payment network. |
| Primary purpose | Defines whether a regular trading session is held. | Defines office observance and availability of specified banking, payment, settlement or cash services. |
| Market, asset and geography | Applies to the venue, listed products and jurisdiction covered by that venue’s notice. | Applies only to the institution and services covered by that service’s schedule; international transactions may add foreign calendars. |
| Closure type | Can be a full holiday closure or a shortened session. | Can vary by office, service and weekend-observance rule. |
| Payment or settlement processing | An open session does not prove that payment rails are operating normally. | A listed holiday can stop or defer processing for specified services, but does not by itself determine whether a particular trade can execute. |
How to check a holiday before placing an order or transfer
- Identify the exact asset and venue. Determine whether you are trading a stock, fund, option, bond or another product, and identify the exchange or market that handles the session. Different venues can publish different calendars.
- Open the venue’s current holiday and trading-hours notice. Look for the year, the named product or market, full closures and early closes. Do not rely on a generic holiday list copied into an app or planner.
- Check your broker’s operational notice. A broker may impose order-entry, cutoff, funding or customer-service deadlines that differ from the venue’s session hours. Confirm how the broker treats orders submitted before, during and after a closure.
- Check the bank or payment service separately. For a deposit, withdrawal, wire, ACH transaction, check, cash service or securities transfer, consult the institution and service actually handling the movement of funds.
- Check the settlement framework for the transaction. The relevant clearing or settlement service may have its own business-day calendar. Avoid promising yourself a particular arrival or settlement date until that service and your broker confirm it.
- Check geography for cross-border activity. Add the receiving country’s holidays and any international payment-calendar rules. A U.S. exchange calendar is not sufficient for an overseas payment.
- Record whether the date is a full closure or an early close. Treat a shortened session as a trading day with reduced hours, not as a day on which all trading is unavailable.
- Review the notice again near the transaction. Calendars are year-specific, and operating details can be published separately from the headline holiday list.
Common investor situations
The exchange is open, but a Federal Reserve holiday is observed
Columbus Day and Veterans Day illustrate this U.S. 2026 mismatch: they appear on the Federal Reserve schedule cited here but not on the NYSE closure list cited here. An investor may be able to trade during the NYSE session while a Federal Reserve-related payment or clearing activity follows holiday rules. Check the specific service before moving cash or relying on same-day processing.
The exchange is closed, but you submit an order anyway
Your broker may accept the instruction for a later session, hold it for the next eligible trading day or apply a different handling rule. The order screen’s acceptance message does not guarantee execution, price or timing. Read the broker’s order-status and holiday guidance, particularly for orders with time-sensitive instructions.

You trade on a shortened session
An early close can reduce the time available for execution and can alter when an order is eligible to fill. NYSE’s 2026 schedule identifies an early close after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. Confirm the exact session hours for the relevant year and product before using a limit, stop or other time-sensitive order.
You are waiting for a deposit or withdrawal
Look at the bank, broker and payment-network calendars rather than the exchange calendar. A market being open does not prove that an ACH, wire, check, cash or securities movement will process that day. Cutoff times and the service’s definition of a standard business day can affect the result.
You are sending money internationally
For an international ACH or similar payment, verify both sides of the transaction. Federal Reserve Financial Services warns that foreign-country holidays can affect FedGlobal ACH processing, so a U.S. holiday check alone can miss the relevant delay.
You need a branch visit or cash service
An exchange calendar cannot tell you whether a branch, cash window or customer-service desk is open. Confirm the bank’s location-specific hours and whether the requested service is processed on the date, particularly when a Federal Reserve observance affects back-office clearing.
Federal Reserve weekend-observance rules
The Federal Reserve’s 2026 schedule includes special rules for holidays that fall on weekends. If a holiday falls on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and branches are open on the preceding Friday, while the Board of Governors is closed. If a holiday falls on Sunday, Federal Reserve offices close on the following Monday.

These rules describe the Federal Reserve institutions named in the schedule. They do not automatically change an exchange’s calendar, a commercial bank’s branch hours or a broker’s customer-service schedule. Check the exact institution and service involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Full closures versus early closes
A full closure means the named exchange does not hold its ordinary session. An early close means the exchange opens but ends regular trading earlier than usual. Those outcomes have different consequences for order timing, monitoring and settlement planning.
- Full closure: no ordinary session occurs on the exchange for the covered market.
- Early close: the session exists but ends at a special time; orders submitted near the end may have less opportunity to execute.
- Separate service schedule: a bank, payment rail or clearing service may use its own hours regardless of the exchange’s status.
Never infer a full-day closure from an early-close announcement. Read the exchange’s year-specific notice for the market and product you use.

Mistakes that cause avoidable delays
Using one generic holiday list
Symptom: You assume a date closes every financial operation. Fix: Match each task to the operator: exchange for execution, broker for order handling, bank or payment service for money movement, and clearing or settlement service for delivery.
Confusing a public holiday with an exchange closure
Symptom: You cancel a trade because a bank holiday appears on a calendar, or you expect a trade when the exchange is closed. Fix: Use the named exchange’s official schedule for trading availability.
Treating an open market as proof of same-day funding
Symptom: A trade executes but a deposit, withdrawal or transfer does not arrive as expected. Fix: Check the applicable payment and clearing service’s standard-business-day rules and your institution’s cutoff times.
Ignoring shortened sessions
Symptom: An order remains unfilled or your monitoring window is shorter than expected. Fix: Identify early-close dates before placing time-sensitive orders and verify the session hours for that year.

A practical planning checklist
- Write down the exact exchange, broker, bank and payment or settlement service involved.
- Confirm the calendar year and the country or jurisdiction.
- Mark full closures separately from early closes.
- Check whether the transaction involves Fedwire Funds, Fedwire Securities, National Settlement Service, ACH, checks or cash services.
- For cross-border payments, check the foreign-country calendar as well as the U.S. service calendar.
- Review order cutoffs, funding cutoffs and customer-service availability with your broker or bank.
- Do not promise yourself a settlement or arrival date until the responsible institution confirms it.
- Save the current official notices for the dates that affect a planned transaction.
What to remember
Exchange calendars answer a trading-session question. Bank and Federal Reserve calendars answer an institutional and payment-operations question. The U.S. 2026 schedules make the difference visible: NYSE lists Good Friday, while the Federal Reserve list includes Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and NYSE separately identifies early closes after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve. Before acting, check the current official calendar for every institution and service your transaction touches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the stock market closed on Columbus Day?
Not necessarily. In the U.S. 2026 example, Columbus Day, October 12, appears on the Federal Reserve holiday schedule but not on the NYSE closure list cited here. Check the specific exchange and year; a Federal Reserve observance does not decide NYSE trading availability.
Does a Federal Reserve holiday close the NYSE?
No. Federal Reserve and exchange calendars serve different institutions. For 2026, Columbus Day and Veterans Day are Federal Reserve dates absent from the NYSE closure list, while Good Friday is listed by the NYSE. Always consult the exchange’s own notice.
Can I place an order when the exchange is closed?
Your broker may accept and queue the instruction, but acceptance does not mean execution. It may wait for the next eligible session or follow a product-specific rule. Check the broker’s order-status and time-in-force guidance.
What is the difference between a full closure and an early close?
A full closure has no ordinary trading session. An early close has a session that ends sooner than usual. The NYSE’s 2026 schedule identifies early closes after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve, so verify the session hours rather than assuming the entire day is unavailable.
Will an open market make my ACH or wire arrive the same day?
No. Payment and clearing services use their own standard-business-day rules. Federal Reserve guidance says activity for Fedwire Funds, Fedwire Securities, National Settlement Service, ACH, Check and Cash Service does not take place on listed holidays. Your bank and broker must confirm the applicable timing.
Do Federal Reserve weekend rules apply to my bank or broker?
Not automatically. The 2026 Federal Reserve schedule says that for a Saturday holiday, Federal Reserve Banks and branches are open the preceding Friday while the Board of Governors is closed; for a Sunday holiday, Federal Reserve offices close the following Monday. Check your provider’s own schedule.
Which calendars should I check for an international payment?
Check the sending service, the U.S. institution, the receiving country’s holiday calendar and the participating banks’ cutoffs. Federal Reserve Financial Services notes that foreign-country holidays can affect FedGlobal ACH processing.
Where can I verify the current schedule?
Use the named exchange’s current holiday and trading-hours notice, your broker’s operational notice, the relevant bank or payment-service schedule and, for Federal Reserve services, the applicable Federal Reserve Financial Services or Federal Reserve Bank calendar. Confirm the year, product, geography and whether the notice describes a closure or an early close.
The Bottom Line
Market holidays determine whether a named exchange holds a trading session; bank and Federal Reserve holidays determine different institutional, payment and clearing operations. Compare the exact operator, service, asset, country and closure type before relying on a date for trading, funding or settlement.
