If a text, call, email, letter, or social-media message says you won a lottery or sweepstakes, treat it as a scam until you independently prove otherwise. The decisive warning sign is a demand for money before you can receive the prize: taxes, shipping, handling, processing, customs, gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire, or any other fee. The Federal Trade Commission’s rule is blunt: “If you have to pay to get your prize, it’s a scam.” Stop communicating, do not click or pay, and verify the promotion through contact information you find yourself.
What a legitimate winning notice should—and should not—ask you to do
An unexpected winning message is especially suspicious when you do not remember entering the lottery, sweepstakes, or contest. Fraudulent notices can arrive through any ordinary channel: phone calls, text messages, email, postal mail, direct messages, or social-media posts. A message may use the name of a real company, government agency, lottery winner, or sweepstakes operator, or it may invent an official-sounding organization.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Legitimate promotions do not require an advance payment to release a prize. The FTC describes real prizes as free. A demand for taxes, delivery, insurance, registration, customs, handling, or processing money before you receive the supposed winnings is a conclusive scam signal for an unsolicited prize notice. Do not let a professional logo, a formal letter, a caller who knows your name, or a check that appears genuine override that rule.
There is a narrow distinction for a skills contest you knowingly entered: its published terms may charge an entry fee. That does not make an unsolicited “you won” message credible, and repeated or escalating charges are a serious warning. For a promotion you actually entered, read the official rules and contact the organizer through details you locate independently.

Claim procedures, tax treatment, and deadlines differ by lottery and jurisdiction. The guidance and reporting links in this article are U.S.-focused. If you are elsewhere, use your country’s official lottery regulator, consumer-protection agency, and police or fraud-reporting service rather than assuming a U.S. procedure applies.
The fastest way to assess a suspicious message
- Ask whether you entered. If you cannot identify the specific drawing, ticket, or contest, assume the notice is fraudulent.
- Look for an advance-payment demand. Any request to pay before receiving a prize—whatever the label or amount—is the strongest warning sign.
- Check what information is requested. Do not send bank or card numbers, your Social Security number, account passwords, copies of identification, or other sensitive data to the sender.
- Notice pressure and secrecy. Urgent deadlines, threats that the prize will be forfeited, or instructions not to tell family, your bank, or authorities are manipulation tactics.
- Inspect the payment method. Gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, wire transfers, and payment apps are favored because they are difficult to reverse.
- Verify outside the message. Find the organization’s official website or published phone number yourself. Never use a link, number, email address, or QR code supplied in the suspicious notice.
Do not reply merely to ask whether the message is real. A response confirms that your number or address is active and can invite more demands.
Red flags that reveal a fake lottery win
| Warning sign | Typical wording or behavior | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| You do not recall entering | “Your name was selected” without identifying a drawing, ticket, or entry you recognize | Do not engage; check your own records and independently locate any real operator |
| Pay first to claim | Taxes, shipping, handling, customs, insurance, processing, or a release fee | Do not pay; an unsolicited prize that requires money is a scam |
| Sensitive-data request | Bank account, card number, Social Security number, password, or identity document | Share nothing with the sender; secure accounts if information was already disclosed |
| Artificial urgency or secrecy | “Act in 10 minutes,” “final notice,” or “tell no one” | Pause and verify through an independent channel |
| Hard-to-reverse payment | Gift-card numbers, cryptocurrency, cash, wire transfer, or payment app | Refuse and preserve the instructions as evidence |
| Unexpected check | Deposit this check, then send part of the money back | Do not spend or return funds; ask your bank to investigate through a trusted number |
| Sender controls verification | A supplied phone number or link is the only way you are allowed to confirm the win | Close the message and find contact information independently |
How the scam is engineered
The advance-fee script
The basic pattern is simple: a message promises money or a valuable item, then says you must send money or personal information before the “prize” can be released. The fee may be small at first. After payment, the sender invents another obstacle—an additional tax, a customs charge, an account-validation fee, or a higher insurance amount. According to the FTC, paying does not unlock a prize; it leaves the victim with a loss and no winnings.

Impersonation and forged authority
A scammer may copy a government seal, a corporate name, a lottery logo, or the identity of a real winner. Caller ID, email domains, social profiles, and letters can all be faked. A message that looks personalized may have been sent to thousands of recipients. Familiar branding is not verification; the only meaningful check is confirmation from the genuine organization using contact details you found independently.
Social-media “free money” offers
On social platforms, a fake account may use the name and photograph of a genuine lottery winner and promise to share “free money.” The impersonator then demands gift cards to cover processing or delivery. Gift-card numbers function like cash: once you send the numbers or a photograph of the card, the scammer can take the value. Do not buy a card to receive a prize, and do not send its code to anyone who contacted you unexpectedly.
The fake-check version
A counterfeit check can make the story appear credible because your bank may show funds as available soon after deposit. That availability is not proof the check cleared. The scammer asks you to send back a portion, perhaps to a courier, tax office, or “charity.” When the bank later identifies the check as fraudulent, it can remove the entire deposit from your account, leaving you responsible for the money you returned. Keep the check and envelope, do not spend the deposit, and contact your bank through the number on its official website or your statement.

How to verify a supposed prize without increasing your risk
- Stop the conversation. Do not click links, open attachments, scan QR codes, call the supplied number, or answer follow-up questions.
- Record the details. Save screenshots, the sender’s address or number, usernames, dates, claimed organization, payment instructions, and any check or envelope.
- Identify the promotion independently. Search for the official organization using a new browser session or a trusted source. Type the address yourself rather than following the message’s link.
- Use published contact information. Call or email the organization using a number or address you found independently. Ask whether the drawing exists, whether your name is listed, and what the official claim process is.
- Compare the rules. A genuine promotion should have accessible terms explaining eligibility, odds where applicable, the prize, and redemption. A demand for payment to release an unsolicited prize does not become legitimate because a document uses legal language.
- Report and block. After preserving evidence, block the account or number. Reporting helps platforms and authorities identify patterns, but it does not require you to keep communicating.
For suspected malicious texts, the FTC also advises using your phone’s report-junk feature or forwarding unwanted texts to 7726 (SPAM). That step is optional and does not replace a fraud report.
What real sweepstakes rules look like
The FTC says legitimate sweepstakes are free to enter and won by chance. It is illegal for a promoter to require payment or a purchase to enter or to improve your odds. When promoters call consumers, they must disclose that entry is free, identify the prizes and their values, state the odds of winning, and explain how a prize is redeemed. Postal promotions must say participation is free and cannot falsely state that a person has won.
These requirements help you evaluate a promotion you knowingly entered; they are not a reason to trust an unsolicited message. Keep the distinction clear:

What to do the moment a message arrives
If you have not paid or shared information
- Do not respond, click, download, or call the sender.
- Do not provide account, card, Social Security, password, or identity-document details.
- Save evidence, then block the sender.
- Independently verify only if you remember entering a specific promotion.
- Report the attempt to the appropriate U.S. channel listed below.
If a family member is being pressured
Stay calm and focus on the payment request rather than arguing about whether the caller sounds official. Ask the person to pause, end the call, and show you the message. Check bank and card activity together, preserve the evidence, and contact the payment provider before any further transfer. Scammers often isolate targets by insisting that secrecy proves loyalty or protects the prize.

Act immediately. The FTC says the sooner you act, the better the chance of stopping or limiting a loss. Use contact details you verify independently—not numbers in the scam message—and ask the provider whether the transaction can be stopped, reversed, or flagged as fraud.

| Cryptocurrency | Notify the exchange or wallet provider immediately | Preserve wallet addresses, transaction IDs, and screenshots |
| Personal or identity information | Follow the response plan at IdentityTheft.gov | Change passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor accounts and credit reports |

- Federal Trade Commission: file a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the sender’s details, payment method, dates, and copies of the messages when requested.
- Identity theft: use IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery checklist when personal information was misused.
- State authorities: report to your state attorney general and local consumer-protection office.
- Postal promotions: contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service when the scam arrived by mail.
- Text messages: use your phone’s report-junk option or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM), in addition to the FTC report.
Reporting cannot guarantee reimbursement, but it creates a record and can help authorities connect related complaints. Keep the original messages, receipts, transaction records, phone numbers, usernames, checks, and envelopes. Do not send originals away unless an authority specifically instructs you how to preserve copies.
Questions people ask about lottery scams
Do I have to pay taxes before receiving legitimate lottery winnings?
An unsolicited request for an advance payment is a scam signal, regardless of whether it is labeled a tax. Legitimate tax obligations and claim procedures vary by lottery and jurisdiction. Verify any real win directly with the official lottery or contest operator using contact information you independently locate, and consult a qualified tax professional for your jurisdiction rather than paying the person who sent the message.
What if the sender knows my name, address, or the last four digits of my account?
Those details can come from public records, breached data, or marketing lists and do not authenticate the sender. Do not disclose additional information. End contact and verify through an independent official channel.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I deposit a prize check while I investigate?
Do not treat an available balance as proof that a check is genuine. Ask your bank to investigate through a trusted number and do not spend or return any funds until the bank confirms the check has cleared and the promotion is real.
What if I paid only a small fee?
Report it and contact the payment provider immediately. Small first payments often test whether a target will continue, and a scammer may follow with larger demands. Do not pay a second fee to obtain a refund.
Are all messages about contests scams?
No. A promotion you knowingly entered may contact you under its published rules. The safe test is independent verification: you should be able to identify the entry, review the official terms, and confirm the claim process without paying an unsolicited fee or surrendering sensitive information to the messenger.
