At a glance: the practical difference
The two policies can look similar because both combine life insurance with participating savings. Their intended cash-flow outcomes are different. Jeevan Lakshya is structured around an annual income benefit when the policyholder dies before maturity, followed by a maturity lump sum. New Jeevan Anand is structured around a defined in-term death-benefit formula, a maturity lump sum if the life assured survives, and continuing life cover after the selected term, subject to policy conditions.

What Jeevan Lakshya is designed to do
LIC describes Jeevan Lakshya as a “Par, Non-linked, Life, Individual, Savings plan.” Its defining feature is an annual income benefit intended primarily for children’s needs if the policyholder dies before maturity. The plan also provides a lump sum at maturity. That combination is meant to address two different financial moments: recurring support for the family after an early death and a later capital amount when the policy reaches its end date.

How the death-before-maturity objective works
The annual income design is the reason to consider Lakshya for a child-focused goal. If the life assured dies before maturity, the family is not limited to waiting for a single maturity payment; the policy is intended to provide income at intervals specified by the policy. The brochure allows instalment payment of benefits. The exact amount, start date, duration and any other death-related amounts must be read from the current benefit illustration and policy terms rather than inferred from the plan name.
Because the brochure does not establish one universal annual-income figure for every policy, do not use an online example as your expected payout. The illustration for your age, term, basic sum assured and payment mode should show guaranteed components separately from projected participating bonuses.
When the maturity payment matters
If the life assured survives the policy term, Lakshya pays a maturity lump sum under the policy terms. This can be earmarked for a child’s higher education, a wedding fund, a first-home contribution or another dated family objective. The amount is not automatically equal to the amount you need in the future; calculate the target in future rupees and compare it with the illustration’s maturity value.
Eligibility and duration limits
Lakshya accepts entry at ages 18 to 50. The minimum maturity age is 31 and the maximum maturity age is 65. Available policy terms are 13 to 25 years. The premium-paying term is the policy term minus three years, so a 13-year policy has a 10-year premium-paying period and a 25-year policy has a 22-year period. Confirm the exact premium schedule and due dates in the proposal because missed premiums can affect policy status and benefits.
What New Jeevan Anand is designed to do
LIC’s brochure describes New Jeevan Anand as a “Par, Non-linked, life, Individual, Savings plan” offering financial protection against death throughout the lifetime of the policyholder. It pays a maturity lump sum if the life assured survives the selected term and expressly continues life cover after that term, subject to policy conditions.

to which vested simple reversionary bonuses and any final additional bonus are added when applicable. The brochure also states that the death benefit cannot be less than 105% of total premiums paid, subject to its definitions and conditions. “Annualised premium,” “basic sum assured,” eligible bonuses and total premiums have defined meanings in the policy; the formula is not a promise that every policy will produce the same amount for the same premium.

Survival and maturity payment
On survival to the end of the selected term, the maturity amount is the basic sum assured plus vested simple reversionary bonuses and any final additional bonus when applicable. The maturity payment is therefore a lump sum rather than Lakshya’s central annual-income design. Use the official illustration to see which portions are guaranteed and which depend on future bonus declarations.
Cover after maturity
New Jeevan Anand’s distinguishing feature is that life cover continues after the selected term, subject to policy conditions. That can suit someone who wants a savings maturity event but does not want the life-insurance relationship to end on that date. Ask the LIC representative to explain the post-maturity sum assured, exclusions, premium status and claim conditions in the policy wording; the continuation should not be treated as unlimited protection on terms not shown in the contract.
Eligibility and duration limits
Entry is available from age 18 to 50. The maximum maturity age is 75. Policy terms run from 15 to 35 years, giving more scope than Lakshya for a longer accumulation period or a maturity date later in working life. The minimum basic sum assured is ₹2,00,000.
Jeevan Lakshya vs New Jeevan Anand: the decision points
1. What should happen if you die early?
Choose Lakshya when the first question is, “How will my children receive regular financial support if I die before they finish school or college?” Its brochure emphasis is an annual income benefit for the family, primarily children, before maturity. Choose New Jeevan Anand when you prefer the policy’s stated death-benefit formula and want the policy to provide a defined amount during the term, with bonuses added under the participating terms.
2. Do you need a lump sum or an income stream?
Lakshya is the closer fit for a planned income stream after death. New Jeevan Anand is the clearer fit for a maturity lump sum. Either plan can involve instalment options or other payment choices, but the payment schedule you need should be written into the illustration and proposal rather than assumed.

3. How long can the policy run?
Lakshya’s 13–25-year range can align with a child’s remaining years until higher education or another family milestone. New Jeevan Anand’s 15–35-year range may suit a longer savings horizon or someone who wants cover to continue to a later maturity age. A longer term can also mean premiums are committed for longer and the goal is exposed to more inflation, so select the end date from the goal rather than from the maximum available term.
4. Is protection after maturity important?
If you specifically want life cover to continue after the savings term, New Jeevan Anand has that feature in its brochure, subject to conditions. Lakshya’s brochure emphasis is the pre-maturity annual income and maturity amount; do not assume it provides the same post-maturity cover without a written confirmation in the applicable policy wording.
5. Which plan is easier to evaluate?
New Jeevan Anand publishes a relatively explicit in-term death-benefit formula, while Lakshya’s most important outcome is the annual income schedule shown for the individual policy. In both cases, participating bonuses are not guaranteed. A plan that appears cheaper or promises a larger illustrated maturity value may simply be using different assumptions, terms or payment modes.

Both plans are participating and non-linked. “Participating” means the policy may receive bonuses declared by LIC under the plan’s rules; it does not mean a fixed annual interest rate. A benefit illustration can contain guaranteed benefits and non-guaranteed projected bonuses. The projected column is not a guaranteed maturity value or an assured internal rate of return.
There is no universal premium, bonus rate or independent published return statistic in the brochures that can be applied to every applicant. Premiums depend on factors such as age, basic sum assured, term, payment mode, underwriting and applicable taxes. Request a current illustration that shows:
- the total premium for every payment year;
- guaranteed death and maturity amounts;
- projected vested bonuses and any final additional bonus, clearly labelled non-guaranteed;
- the timing and amount of Lakshya’s annual income benefit, if that is the selected plan;
- rider premiums and taxes separately; and
- the policy’s surrender, paid-up, loan and lapse consequences.
Affordability and cash-flow checks before applying
Match the premium to a durable budget
A policy that becomes unaffordable defeats a long-term family goal. Build the premium into a household budget that still works during job changes, parental leave, illness and other predictable interruptions. For Lakshya, remember that premiums are payable for the policy term minus three years, not necessarily for the full benefit period. For New Jeevan Anand, confirm the selected premium-paying option and duration in the current quotation.

Separate insurance need from savings capacity
Participating savings policies combine protection and accumulation, but the death benefit may not be enough to replace a large income or fund all future education costs. Estimate the family’s liabilities, years of income to replace, existing assets and inflation-adjusted education target. Then ask whether separate term insurance is needed in addition to either policy. The comparison should not be treated as personalised financial advice.
Allow for inflation
A child-care or education target stated in today’s rupees will usually be larger when it falls due. A maturity amount that looks adequate now may not meet the future cost. Set the target date first, convert the goal to future rupees, and then test the guaranteed part of each illustration against that figure. Treat bonus projections as an additional possibility, not as the only funding source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Liquidity, loans and optional riders
The brochures list a policy loan facility for both plans. A loan can provide access to cash without immediately surrendering the policy, but interest, maximum loan value, unpaid dues and the effect on the death or maturity benefit are governed by the policy terms. Ask for a written loan illustration before borrowing and keep premiums current if the contract requires it.
Both brochures also mention optional riders. A rider can add a specific benefit, but it usually adds a separate charge and may have eligibility, waiting-period or claim conditions. Compare the rider’s insured event, exclusions, term, premium and renewal treatment with standalone insurance available to you. Do not assume that every rider is available for every age, term or sum assured.
Lakshya’s brochure also lists a high-sum-assured rebate. The amount and eligibility of any rebate should be confirmed in the current quotation; it should not be used to infer a general discount for all buyers.

A step-by-step way to choose between the two
- Write the financial event. State whether the priority is an annual family income after an early death, a maturity lump sum, continuing cover after maturity, or a combination.
- Set the date and amount. For a child’s education or another goal, specify the year and inflation-adjusted amount needed.
- Choose the term range that can meet the date. Lakshya must be 13–25 years; New Jeevan Anand must be 15–35 years. Reject a plan whose available term cannot reach the goal at a sensible age.
- Obtain current illustrations for both plans. Use the same applicant details, basic sum assured, payment mode and target date so the comparison is meaningful.
- Separate guaranteed and non-guaranteed values. Compare the guaranteed death and maturity benefits first, then examine the bonus scenarios without treating them as assured.
- Stress-test the premium. Check affordability during income disruption and include taxes, rider charges and any separate term-insurance premium.
- Read the post-maturity and early-exit terms. For New Jeevan Anand, confirm the continuing-cover conditions. For either plan, understand lapse, paid-up, surrender and loan effects before signing.
- Verify the contract identity. Check that the proposal and illustration name the intended plan, plan number and UIN, and retain the brochure and policy wording issued for your application.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the maximum sum assured as the goal calculation
The minimum basic sum assured for both plans is ₹2,00,000, but the minimum is not a recommendation. Base the amount on the family’s income-replacement need and the future cost of the stated goal.

Comparing only the maturity figure
A maturity-only comparison ignores Lakshya’s annual income purpose, New Jeevan Anand’s in-term death formula and the latter’s post-maturity cover. Compare the timing and purpose of every benefit, not just the final lump sum.
Calling projected bonuses guaranteed
Participating bonuses can change. Keep the guaranteed and non-guaranteed columns separate in your notes and budgeting.
Assuming post-maturity cover is identical
New Jeevan Anand expressly describes continuing lifetime protection subject to conditions. Lakshya’s brochure emphasis differs. Confirm the applicable wording rather than transferring a feature from one plan to the other.

A savings policy may not replace the full income a family loses. Evaluate separate term insurance and emergency savings alongside the policy decision.
Relying on an old brochure
Plan versions, UINs, conditions and product availability can change. Use the current LIC material and ensure the version you receive matches the plan identity in your proposal.
Which policy fits common family situations?
Parents funding a child’s education in 13–25 years
Jeevan Lakshya is the natural first comparison when the family specifically needs annual support if the parent dies before the education milestone. Confirm that the annual income schedule and maturity amount cover the intended years and that separate life cover addresses any remaining income-replacement gap.
A buyer seeking a lump sum and continuing cover
New Jeevan Anand is the closer fit when the buyer values a maturity lump sum and wants life protection to continue after the selected term, subject to policy conditions. Check the post-maturity terms and the amount of cover shown in the contract.
A buyer with an uncertain budget
Neither plan should be selected solely because an illustrated premium appears manageable. Test the premium against guaranteed benefits, future expenses and the cost of appropriate term insurance. If the commitment is not sustainable, a smaller policy amount or a different protection-and-savings structure may be safer than allowing a policy to lapse.
Questions to ask the LIC representative
- Which exact plan number, UIN and brochure version apply to this proposal?
- Which benefits are guaranteed, and which depend on future bonus declarations?
- For Lakshya, when does the annual income start, how long is it paid, and what other amount is payable at maturity?
- For New Jeevan Anand, how is the 125%/seven-times formula applied to this applicant, and what cover remains after maturity?
- What are the premium-paying years, due dates, grace-period consequences and reinstatement requirements?
- What happens on surrender, paid-up status, lapse or a policy loan?
- Which riders are available, what do they cost, and when do they end?
- What taxes and underwriting requirements apply to this application?
Bottom line
Jeevan Lakshya fits a child- or family-income objective after an early death, provided its 13–25-year term and annual benefit schedule match the goal. New Jeevan Anand fits a buyer who prioritises a maturity lump sum and continuing life cover after the term. Both require the same discipline: use a current personalised illustration, distinguish guaranteed benefits from participating bonuses, check affordability and liquidity, and assess whether separate term insurance is needed.
