LIC Jeevan Lakshya 733 Tax Benefits: Section 80C Deductions and Section 10(10D) Exemption

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LIC Jeevan Lakshya 733 can qualify for Section 80C deductions and Section 10(10D) tax exemption, but neither benefit is automatic. Your result depends on the policy issue date, annual premium, actual capital sum assured, ownership and payment conditions, policy status, the tax regime you use, and whether you have other Section 80C claims.

For policies issued from 1 April 2012, the premium generally must not exceed 10% of the actual capital sum assured for the premium-related tests. For non-ULIP policies issued from 1 April 2023, a separate ₹5,00,000 annual-premium rule can remove the Section 10(10D) exemption. Death receipts are not subject to these premium-based restrictions.

What LIC Jeevan Lakshya 733 is

LIC’s Jeevan Lakshya 733 is identified in the LIC brochure by UIN 512N297V03. It is a participating, non-linked, individual savings life plan. In practical terms, it combines life protection with a savings-oriented maturity benefit rather than tracking market-linked units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The plan provides an annual income benefit after a pre-maturity death and a lump-sum maturity amount. Because it is participating, bonuses may form part of amounts payable under the policy. It is purchased offline through licensed agents, corporate agents, brokers and insurance marketing firms.

The tax treatment does not follow simply from the name “Jeevan Lakshya 733.” The policy schedule and payment history must be tested against the Income-tax Act provisions applicable to the issue date and the year in which a deduction or receipt is claimed.

Section 80C deduction for Jeevan Lakshya 733 premiums

The overall ₹1,50,000 ceiling

Section 80C permits an individual or Hindu Undivided Family to claim eligible life-insurance premiums along with other qualifying payments and investments, subject to an aggregate ceiling of ₹1,50,000 in a previous year. The Income-tax Department stated this ceiling in its 2025 guidance.

The ceiling applies across all of your eligible Section 80C items. Jeevan Lakshya 733 does not receive a separate ₹1,50,000 limit. If qualifying tuition fees, provident-fund contributions or other permitted items already use part of the ceiling, only the remaining amount can be used for the policy premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question How Section 80C treats it
Is the limit per policy? No. The ₹1,50,000 limit is aggregate across qualifying Section 80C payments and investments.
Can the full premium be claimed? Only the amount that is eligible under the premium-to-sum-assured rule and that fits within your unused aggregate limit.
Does the policy create an extra deduction? No. Its premium competes for the same Section 80C ceiling.
Does every tax regime allow the deduction? Not necessarily. Check whether Section 80C is available under the tax regime and assessment year used for your return.

The 10% premium-to-sum-assured condition

For policies issued on or after 1 April 2012, the qualifying life-insurance premium is restricted to 10% of the actual capital sum assured, according to the Income-tax Department’s 2025 guidance. This is a condition on the premium that can qualify; it is not an additional deduction limit.

For an illustration, if the actual capital sum assured shown in the policy documents is ₹10,00,000, 10% is ₹1,00,000. A premium above that level may not qualify in full for the relevant Section 80C test. The actual figure must come from the policy schedule; do not substitute the maturity amount, a projected bonus or the total of future premiums.

The issue date matters. A policy issued before 1 April 2012 is governed by the law applicable to that earlier issue date, while a policy issued from 1 April 2012 is subject to the 10% condition described above. Jeevan Lakshya 733’s plan name alone does not establish which test applies to an individual contract.

Ownership and payment conditions

Section 80C also requires the policyholder to satisfy the statutory ownership and payment conditions. Keep evidence showing who owns the policy, who paid each premium and the date and amount of payment. A receipt in your possession is not, by itself, proof that every legal condition has been met.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to calculate a possible 80C claim

  1. Read the policy schedule and record the issue date, annual premium and actual capital sum assured.
  2. For an issue from 1 April 2012 onward, calculate 10% of the actual capital sum assured and compare it with the premium payable for the relevant year.
  3. Identify the amount that meets the premium condition and the policy’s ownership and payment requirements.
  4. Add your other eligible Section 80C claims for the same previous year.
  5. Limit the combined claim to ₹1,50,000 and verify that your selected tax regime permits the deduction for the applicable assessment year.

Section 10(10D): when maturity and bonuses can be exempt

General exemption, with statutory exclusions

Section 10(10D) generally exempts sums received under a life-insurance policy, including bonuses. The provision excludes certain categories, including Keyman policies, and it can deny exemption when statutory premium-to-sum-assured tests are not met.

For a Jeevan Lakshya 733 maturity payment, the relevant question is therefore not merely whether the policy is called a life-insurance plan. You must test the contract against the conditions in force for its issue date and the premium years concerned.

The post-2012 premium ratio

For a policy issued on or after 1 April 2012, Section 10(10D) exemption can fail when the premium payable in any year exceeds 10% of the actual capital sum assured. This premium-ratio condition is separate from the ₹1,50,000 Section 80C ceiling.

A premium can be below ₹1,50,000 and still fail the 10% Section 10(10D) condition if the actual capital sum assured is comparatively low. Conversely, a premium can satisfy the 10% ratio but produce no Section 80C deduction if you have already exhausted the aggregate ₹1,50,000 limit or if your tax regime does not permit the deduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The additional ₹5 lakh rule from 1 April 2023

For non-ULIP policies issued on or after 1 April 2023, a further rule applies. If the premium payable in any previous year exceeds ₹5,00,000, the Section 10(10D) exemption is unavailable for the affected policy set. This threshold comes from CBDT guidance issued in 2023.

The law aggregates premiums across multiple non-ULIP policies issued from 1 April 2023. You therefore need to consider the combined annual premiums of all such policies, not just the Jeevan Lakshya 733 premium viewed in isolation. The ₹5,00,000 test is an exemption rule; it does not increase or reduce the separate ₹1,50,000 Section 80C ceiling.

Rule What it controls Key date or amount
Section 80C aggregate ceiling Maximum deduction for all qualifying 80C items together ₹1,50,000 in a previous year
10% premium condition Whether the premium meets the statutory ratio for deduction and exemption tests For policies issued from 1 April 2012: premium not above 10% of actual capital sum assured
Section 10(10D) non-ULIP threshold Whether maturity and similar receipts retain exemption for the affected policy set For relevant policies issued from 1 April 2023: annual premium not above ₹5,00,000

How death benefits are treated

Jeevan Lakshya 733 is designed to provide an annual income benefit after a pre-maturity death and a lump-sum maturity amount if the policy reaches maturity. The tax rules distinguish a death receipt from a maturity receipt.

The premium-ratio restriction and the ₹5,00,000 non-ULIP rule do not apply to sums received on the death of the insured. This means a death claim is not denied under those premium-based restrictions merely because the policy’s premium exceeded the stated thresholds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the insurer’s death-benefit statement and supporting policy documents. The exact components paid, the recipient, the policy status and the law applicable when the claim is received should still be checked before filing a return. Do not relabel a maturity payment as a death benefit simply because the policy also provides life cover.

Worked examples of the tests

Example 1: 80C ceiling reached by other investments

Assume a policyholder has ₹90,000 of otherwise eligible Section 80C claims from other sources and pays a Jeevan Lakshya 733 premium of ₹80,000. Even if the entire premium satisfies the policy’s premium-ratio and ownership conditions, only ₹60,000 can fit within the ₹1,50,000 aggregate ceiling for that previous year.

Example 2: premium-ratio issue

Assume a policy issued after 1 April 2012 has an actual capital sum assured of ₹8,00,000 and an annual premium of ₹1,00,000. Ten percent of the capital sum assured is ₹80,000. The premium exceeds that ratio, so the contract requires further tax analysis before claiming a Section 80C deduction or treating a maturity receipt as exempt under Section 10(10D).

Example 3: the ₹5 lakh aggregation rule

Assume an individual holds two non-ULIP policies issued after 1 April 2023. The annual premiums are ₹3,20,000 and ₹2,10,000, producing a combined ₹5,30,000 for a previous year. The combined amount exceeds ₹5,00,000, so the Section 10(10D) treatment of the affected policy set must be examined. This does not turn the premiums into a ₹5,30,000 Section 80C deduction; the aggregate 80C ceiling remains ₹1,50,000.

Step-by-step record check before claiming a benefit

  1. Collect the policy schedule. Note UIN 512N297V03 where it appears, the issue date, policy term, annual premium, actual capital sum assured and policyholder details.
  2. Confirm the policy type. Jeevan Lakshya 733 is non-linked and participating. Check whether you have other policies that are non-ULIPs issued on or after 1 April 2023 for the ₹5,00,000 aggregation test.
  3. Review every premium year. The tests refer to premium payable in a year or previous year. A change in premium, endorsement or policy status can affect the year being reviewed.
  4. Run the 10% calculation where applicable. Compare the relevant premium with 10% of the actual capital sum assured for a policy issued from 1 April 2012 onward.
  5. Aggregate relevant premiums. For post-1 April 2023 non-ULIP policies, total the annual premiums across the policy set before assessing the ₹5,00,000 threshold.
  6. Classify the receipt. Identify whether the money is a death benefit, maturity amount, surrender value, bonus or another payment. The death exception cannot be applied to a maturity receipt.
  7. Check your tax regime and other claims. Confirm Section 80C availability for the applicable assessment year and subtract your other qualifying claims from the ₹1,50,000 ceiling.
  8. Save evidence. Retain the schedule, premium receipts, sum-assured details, issue-date proof and maturity or death statement.

Reporting the premium in your income-tax return

The Income-tax Department’s ITR guidance includes life-insurance premium under Section 80C. It asks for the policy number or document identification number and the amount eligible for deduction.

Enter only the eligible amount after applying the premium-ratio condition, the aggregate ₹1,50,000 ceiling, your ownership and payment facts, and the rules of the tax regime used. Do not enter the gross amount paid if part of it fails a statutory condition.

Keep the policy number or document identification number exactly as shown in the insurer’s records. Preserve receipts even when your employer’s tax statement already reflects a deduction; the statement does not replace the underlying evidence.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Treating ₹1,50,000 as a policy-specific limit

The ceiling covers all qualifying Section 80C items. Recalculate the total for the previous year and claim only the unused portion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing the 10% test with the 80C ceiling

The 10% figure compares premium with actual capital sum assured. The ₹1,50,000 figure limits the combined deduction. They answer different questions and both may matter.

Ignoring the issue date

The 10% condition described here applies to policies issued from 1 April 2012. The ₹5,00,000 rule applies to relevant non-ULIP policies issued from 1 April 2023. Verify the date on the schedule rather than relying on when you started paying.

Applying the ₹5 lakh rule to a death claim

The premium-based restrictions do not apply to sums received on death. First determine whether the payment is a death receipt or a maturity-related receipt.

Assuming the old-regime deduction in every return

Section 80C availability depends on the applicable tax regime and assessment year. Check that choice before entering the premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using projected maturity value as the sum assured

The ratio uses the actual capital sum assured. Use the amount stated in the policy documents, not a projected bonus or maturity illustration.

How to compare this policy with another life policy for tax purposes

If you are evaluating Jeevan Lakshya 733 alongside another life policy, compare the tax-relevant facts rather than the product names.

Comparison point What to verify
Premium-to-sum-assured ratio Whether each policy meets the applicable percentage test for its issue date.
Annual premium Whether the amount fits your available Section 80C room and, for relevant post-2023 non-ULIPs, the ₹5,00,000 aggregate test.
Issue date Which statutory version of the premium rules applies.
Ownership and payment Whether the person claiming the deduction satisfies the legal conditions and can document payment.
Death-benefit structure How annual income and lump-sum benefits are triggered and documented.
Maturity and bonus design Whether the expected receipt is maturity-related and remains within Section 10(10D) conditions.
Policy term and liquidity Loan, surrender and other contract terms, which can affect when and how a receipt arises.

What you should retain for an audit or query

  • Original policy schedule and any endorsements.
  • UIN and policy number or document identification number.
  • Premium receipts and bank or payroll evidence of payment.
  • Actual capital sum assured and issue-date details.
  • A list of other Section 80C claims for each previous year.
  • Details of other post-1 April 2023 non-ULIP policies and their annual premiums.
  • Maturity statement, bonus statement or death-benefit statement, as applicable.
  • Evidence of policy ownership and the person who paid the premium.

A tax result cannot be computed from “LIC Jeevan Lakshya 733” alone. Confirm the figures against the policy documents and current law for the relevant assessment year; seek individualized advice when the premium ratio, multiple-policy aggregation, ownership or receipt classification is uncertain.
