Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: Samsung Electronics is the much larger, more profitable and more semiconductor-sensitive investment. LG Electronics is a smaller portfolio centered on appliances, HVAC, media, vehicle components and related business-to-business (B2B) opportunities. Samsung may offer greater earnings torque when memory, foundry and artificial-intelligence (AI) chip demand are strong, while LG offers a less chip-dominated way to invest in Korean electronics. Neither is automatically “safer”: Samsung’s profits can swing with chip prices and enormous capital spending, and LG’s returns depend on appliance demand, HVAC and vehicle-solution execution, and a recovery in display profitability.
The right choice depends on whether you want semiconductor-cycle exposure and scale or a more diversified consumer-durables, climate-solutions and automotive-components thesis. The 2025 results show the difference clearly: Samsung reported KRW 333.6 trillion of sales and KRW 43.6 trillion of operating profit, versus LG’s KRW 89.201 trillion of sales and KRW 2.478 trillion of operating profit. Those figures describe different business mixes and one particular point in the semiconductor cycle; they do not, by themselves, prove that Samsung is the lower-risk stock.

What each company actually owns
LG Electronics: appliances, media, vehicles and climate solutions
LG Electronics reports four principal operating segments: Home Appliance Solution, Media Entertainment Solution, Vehicle Solution and Eco Solution. LG Innotek also contributes optics, substrates and automotive components. This creates a portfolio whose cash generation is tied mainly to household appliances, televisions and media platforms, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), and components supplied to automakers.
LG’s 2025 results release said Home Appliance Solution and Vehicle Solution reached record annual revenue. Display-based businesses, however, recorded an operating loss. For a long-term investor, that combination matters: the appliance and vehicle businesses provide operating platforms with recurring replacement and contract demand, while display losses can dilute group profitability when panel economics are weak.

Samsung Electronics: finished products plus a semiconductor engine
Samsung reports Device eXperience (DX), Device Solutions (DS), Samsung Display and Harman. DX includes smartphones, televisions and appliances. DS contains memory, foundry and system LSI semiconductors; Samsung Display makes display panels; Harman supplies automotive audio and related technology.
Semiconductors are central to the consolidated investment case. DS supplied 36% of Samsung’s divisional sales in 2025 and generated KRW 24.858 trillion of operating profit. Samsung therefore combines consumer brands with a capital-intensive chip manufacturer whose results can change rapidly as memory prices, wafer utilization and AI infrastructure demand move.
2025 financial scale and segment contribution
The following figures are reported results for the financial year 2025. They should be read as company-reported amounts, not as forecasts or normalized earnings.

|---|---|---|
| Sales | KRW 89.201 trillion | KRW 333.6 trillion |
| Operating profit | KRW 2.478 trillion | KRW 43.6 trillion |
| Net income | KRW 1.220 trillion | KRW 45.2 trillion |
| Reported operating segments | Home Appliance Solution; Media Entertainment Solution; Vehicle Solution; Eco Solution; LG Innotek contributions | DX; DS; Samsung Display; Harman |
Samsung’s earnings scale is not simply a measure of superior execution. Its portfolio includes a global semiconductor operation that can produce very high profits in favorable pricing conditions and absorb very large investment when demand is strong. LG’s lower absolute profit reflects a smaller company and a different mix of businesses, including segments that are less profitable or loss-making at times.
Samsung’s divisional numbers
| Samsung division (2025) | Sales | Operating profit |
|---|---|---|
| Device eXperience (DX) | KRW 188.0 trillion | KRW 12.853 trillion |
| Device Solutions (DS) | KRW 130.1 trillion | KRW 24.858 trillion |
| Samsung Display | KRW 29.8 trillion | KRW 4.116 trillion |
| Harman | KRW 15.8 trillion | KRW 1.531 trillion |
These segment amounts demonstrate why semiconductor execution drives Samsung’s group result. DS generated more than half of the company’s 2025 operating profit despite representing 36% of divisional sales. A downturn in memory or foundry profitability can therefore have an outsized effect on consolidated earnings.

Cyclicality: which stock is more sensitive to an industry cycle?
Samsung’s memory, foundry and AI exposure
Memory is priced in a competitive global market. Changes in data-center investment, smartphone and PC demand, inventory levels, bit growth, average selling prices and manufacturing utilization can move profits quickly. Foundry results add execution and capacity-utilization risk, while system LSI depends on design wins and product cycles.
AI creates a substantial growth option for Samsung. Management has highlighted AI memory, foundry, advanced packaging and AI-enabled devices. In a strong AI infrastructure cycle, higher-value memory and packaging demand can lift revenue and margins. In a digestion period, customers can slow orders while Samsung continues carrying depreciation and other fixed costs.
LG’s demand and execution cycle
LG is exposed to consumer replacement cycles, housing and construction activity, commercial HVAC projects, television competition, automotive production schedules and display-panel economics. These drivers can be cyclical, but they do not all move in lockstep with memory prices. A weak television or appliance market may be partly offset by commercial HVAC, vehicle components or services revenue.
That diversification should not be mistaken for a defensive guarantee. Appliances and televisions remain discretionary purchases, and vehicle-solution programs require long development cycles, quality performance and successful launches by automaker customers. LG’s 2025 display losses show that a diversified portfolio can still contain a material drag on profit.
Profitability, capital intensity and reinvestment
Samsung’s unusually large investment program
Samsung reported approximately KRW 52.7 trillion of capital expenditure in fiscal 2025, including KRW 47.5 trillion in Device Solutions. This spending supports process technology, fabs, memory capacity and other semiconductor infrastructure. It can strengthen the company’s competitive position, but it also raises depreciation, execution and return-on-capital requirements.

For Samsung shareholders, the key question is not whether high capex is good or bad in isolation. It is whether investment is timed to demand, produces competitive yields and earns acceptable returns across a full chip cycle. A year of high operating profit can coexist with substantial cash committed to future capacity.

LG’s lower absolute capex does not eliminate execution risk
The supplied 2025 disclosures do not establish a directly comparable LG group capital-expenditure figure. LG’s investment priorities nevertheless include HVAC, vehicle solutions, B2B expansion, webOS and services, and AI data-center cooling opportunities. These projects require product development, sales infrastructure and manufacturing investment, even if they are not on Samsung’s semiconductor scale.
LG investors should focus on whether growth businesses improve the group’s mix and margins, and whether display losses are contained. Samsung investors should track both chip-cycle profitability and the cash returns generated after its much larger reinvestment program.
Growth options beyond the current businesses
Where LG could grow
- Commercial HVAC and cooling: LG has identified B2B expansion and AI data-center cooling as opportunities. Data-center demand can support larger, technically specialized cooling systems than residential replacement markets.
- Vehicle solutions: Record 2025 annual revenue indicates scale-up, but profitability will depend on program launches, component content, customer concentration and manufacturing execution.
- webOS and services: Software and services can add recurring revenue around LG’s installed base, potentially reducing reliance on one-time hardware purchases.
- Appliances: Premium products, energy efficiency and connected-home features can support mix improvement, although consumers remain sensitive to prices and economic conditions.
Where Samsung could grow
- AI memory: Higher-performance memory for accelerators and servers is a principal opportunity, but qualification, supply and pricing determine how much value Samsung captures.
- Foundry and advanced packaging: Winning external chip designs and combining logic, memory, foundry and packaging could increase wallet share, provided yields and delivery remain competitive.
- AI-enabled devices: Smartphones, televisions, appliances and other devices can use on-device or cloud-linked AI to support premium pricing and ecosystem engagement.
- Automotive technology: Harman adds automotive audio and related electronics, giving Samsung another route into vehicle content beyond semiconductors.
Samsung’s chairman Je-Yoon Shin and CEO and vice chairman Young-Hyun Jun wrote in the 2026 letter to shareholders: “Samsung achieved its highest-ever annual revenue, and the stock price rose substantially, leading our market capitalization to surpass KRW 1,000 trillion, a first for Korean companies.” The same letter described DS’s goal of being the world’s only semiconductor company able to offer a “one stop solution” spanning logic, memory, foundry and advanced packaging. These are management ambitions, not guarantees of market share or returns.
Shareholder returns and ownership structure
Samsung’s disclosed 2025 distribution
Samsung’s 2025 total dividend payout was KRW 11.108 trillion. Its annual general meeting disclosure stated a common-share dividend yield of 1.5% under KRX methodology. The yield is a reported 2025 figure, not a promise that future yield will remain unchanged; share prices and board decisions can alter the percentage.

LG’s dividend information
LG’s investor-relations materials publish dividend data, but a directly comparable 2025 LG dividend yield was not established in the available disclosures. Investors should therefore avoid presenting Samsung’s 1.5% KRX-methodology yield beside an invented or differently calculated LG percentage.
Control and board independence
LG Corp. owned 35.3% of LG Electronics’ total shares excluding preferred shares as of September 30, 2025. That controlling stake can support long-term coordination but is relevant to minority investors evaluating governance and related-party oversight.
Samsung’s AGM disclosure stated that five of eight directors were independent, or 62.5%. Board composition is only one governance indicator; investors should also review capital-allocation decisions, executive incentives, related-party transactions and the treatment of minority shareholders.

Samsung Electronics risks
- Memory-price declines or weaker utilization can compress DS margins quickly.
- Foundry process, yield, customer-qualification and advanced-packaging execution may lag competitors.
- KRW 47.5 trillion of 2025 DS capex creates high fixed-cost and timing risk if demand disappoints.
- Trade barriers, export controls and geopolitical tensions can affect equipment, customers and supply chains; Samsung management itself flags global trade and geopolitical risks.
- Strong reported profits can make the stock appear safer than it is if earnings are near a cyclical peak.
LG Electronics risks
- Display-based businesses recorded an operating loss in 2025, showing the effect of weak panel economics or product conditions.
- Appliance and television demand can weaken with household budgets, housing activity or aggressive competition.
- Vehicle solutions and HVAC require sustained execution, customer wins and reliable delivery before growth becomes durable profit.
- Competition in televisions, appliances, components and climate equipment can limit pricing power.
- Services and B2B initiatives may take time and investment before they materially change group margins.
Valuation: what cannot yet be concluded
A “cheaper stock” conclusion requires synchronized market data. The available material does not establish October 2026 share prices, market capitalizations, price-to-earnings ratios, enterprise-value-to-EBITDA ratios, price-to-book ratios or analyst-consensus returns for both companies. Without the same date, currency treatment, share class and earnings denominator, a valuation comparison would be misleading.
| Valuation item | LG Electronics | Samsung Electronics |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 share price | Not stated in the available disclosures | Not stated in the available disclosures |
| October 2026 market capitalization | Not stated in the available disclosures | Not stated in the available disclosures |
| P/E, EV/EBITDA and price-to-book | Not established on a synchronized date | Not established on a synchronized date |
| Analyst-consensus return | Not established | Not established |
Before buying either share, use one market-data date and specify whether earnings are trailing, forward or normalized. For Samsung, a cycle-adjusted estimate may be more informative than a single year of high or low DS profit. For LG, examine whether display losses are temporary and whether vehicle, HVAC and services growth is converting into operating income.
How to choose between them as a long-term investor
Samsung may fit you if
- You can tolerate semiconductor-cycle volatility and want direct exposure to AI memory, foundry and advanced packaging.
- You value global scale, a large cash-generating platform and higher reported earnings power.
- You are prepared to monitor capex, utilization, memory pricing, customer qualifications and geopolitical exposure.
- You accept that a strong recent profit number may reflect favorable chip conditions rather than permanently higher margins.
LG may fit you if
- You prefer a portfolio led by appliances, HVAC, media and vehicle components rather than one dominated by semiconductors.
- You want exposure to B2B climate equipment, automotive content and services as potential growth engines.
- You are willing to follow display losses, consumer demand and execution in newer businesses.
- You prefer to assess progress through mix improvement and recurring operating performance instead of semiconductor pricing alone.
A practical due-diligence sequence
- Decide how much semiconductor-cycle exposure your overall portfolio can withstand.
- Read the latest segment disclosures and separate revenue growth from operating-profit growth.
- For Samsung, compare DS profit, memory conditions and capex with the prior cycle; for LG, track appliance, vehicle, HVAC and display profitability separately.
- Check dividend policy, ownership, board composition and any share-class differences relevant to your purchase.
- Collect same-day valuation data for both companies and label every multiple as trailing, forward or cycle-adjusted.
- Stress-test your thesis: assume lower chip prices for Samsung, or continued display losses and slower vehicle/HVAC conversion for LG.
- Set a review rule based on business indicators rather than short-term share-price movement.
Bottom line for a long-term comparison
Samsung Electronics is the higher-scale, semiconductor-led choice. Its 2025 DS operating profit and AI-related growth options can produce powerful upside, but memory and foundry cycles, heavy capex and geopolitical risks make earnings sensitive. LG Electronics is the more focused consumer, HVAC and vehicle-solutions choice. Its record appliance and vehicle revenue in 2025 offers a credible operating story, yet display losses and execution demands prevent it from being treated as automatically defensive.
Choose based on the exposure you want, then verify valuation with synchronized October 2026 market data before deciding that either stock is inexpensive. Samsung’s higher profit is not proof of lower risk, and LG’s appliance emphasis is not proof of steadier returns.
