Short answer: A regular index ETF is designed to track an index over time, while a leveraged ETF is generally designed to deliver a multiple of an index’s daily return. That daily target resets, so a 2x fund is not a promise of twice the index’s return over a month or year. Compounding, volatility, derivatives, trading costs and taxes can make a leveraged ETF’s longer-term result differ sharply from the benchmark—even when the benchmark rises.
This comparison uses guidance for U.S.-registered ETFs from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It is educational, not individualized investment advice.

The essential difference: tracking an index versus targeting a daily multiple
A conventional, or “regular,” index ETF has an adviser seeking to make the fund’s return closely correspond to an underlying securities index. The fund can still fall, deviate from the index and lose money; “regular” does not mean guaranteed, risk-free or cost-free.
A leveraged ETF generally seeks a specified multiple of an index or benchmark’s return for one trading day. A fund with a 2x objective seeks approximately twice that day’s gain or loss before fees and other frictions; a 3x objective seeks approximately three times. The objective is not a guarantee and is measured over the fund’s stated daily reset period.

The SEC puts the time frame plainly: “Leveraged and inverse ETFs typically are designed to achieve their stated performance objectives on a daily basis.” Read the agency’s Updated Investor Bulletin: Leveraged and Inverse ETFs (August 29, 2023) for the full discussion. The bulletin is staff guidance, not a Commission rule or regulation.
How daily reset changes a multi-day investment
Returns compound in sequence
For a conventional index ETF, your holding-period return is driven by the sequence of the index’s daily returns, tracking differences and fund costs. A leveraged ETF adds another layer: each day’s target is calculated from that day’s starting exposure, and the fund generally resets its exposure for the next session.
In simplified terms, a 2x fund’s value after several days is affected by multiplying one day’s approximately 2x result by the next day’s approximately 2x result, and so on. It is not calculated by taking the index’s total return at the end of the period and multiplying it by two. The order and size of the daily moves therefore matter.

Volatility can widen the gap
Alternating gains and losses can erode a daily-reset fund even when the index eventually ends near, or above, its starting level. Leverage amplifies unfavorable daily moves as well as favorable ones. Higher volatility creates more opportunities for that compounding effect to work against a long position.
The SEC warns that investors can suffer substantial losses even when the underlying index’s longer-term performance is positive. Its examples are historical illustrations, not forecasts or representative expected outcomes:

- In one example, an index gained 2% over four months while a leveraged ETF seeking twice the index’s daily return fell 6.
- In another four-month example, an ETF seeking three times the daily return of a different index fell 53% while that index gained around 8%. The corresponding inverse ETF fell 90%.
Those outcomes demonstrate path dependence: the benchmark’s start-to-finish percentage does not reveal the daily path that produced it.
Inverse funds have the same daily-reset issue
An inverse ETF seeks the opposite of an index’s daily return, often with a leveraged multiple. The same reset and compounding mechanics apply, and losses can compound when the market moves against the fund’s daily objective. This article focuses on leveraged long exposure, but the risk framework also applies to inverse products.

Leveraged funds commonly use swaps, futures and other derivatives to obtain the desired daily exposure rather than simply holding a multiple of every security in the benchmark. Derivative use introduces risks that are less prominent in a plain index-tracking structure, including counterparty, collateral, liquidity, pricing and roll-related risks. The exact mix depends on the fund and its prospectus.
Read the fund’s prospectus for its benchmark, leverage factor, reset methodology, permitted instruments, collateral practices, principal risks and circumstances in which the adviser may change exposure. Two funds with the same advertised multiple can have different implementation details and different results.
Side-by-side comparison
| Comparison point | Regular index ETF | Leveraged ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Seek returns that closely correspond to an underlying securities index. | Generally seek a specified multiple of an index or benchmark’s return for one trading day. |
| Reset and holding period | Designed for index tracking; results over time reflect the index path, tracking difference and costs. | Most reset exposure daily; results beyond one day depend on daily compounding, path and volatility rather than a simple multiple of cumulative index performance. |
| How exposure may be obtained | May hold the benchmark’s securities or use other index-replication techniques described in the prospectus. | Commonly uses swaps, futures and other derivatives, with related counterparty, collateral, liquidity and pricing risks. |
| Loss profile | Can lose value when the tracked index falls and can deviate from it. | Daily gains and losses are magnified; substantial multi-day losses are possible even when the index’s longer-term return is positive. |
| Fees and trading costs | Expense ratio, brokerage spread, market-price-to-NAV differences and portfolio-related costs reduce returns. | All of those costs may apply, and the SEC says leveraged products may be more costly than traditional ETFs; derivative and turnover-related costs can also matter. |
| Tax considerations | Tax efficiency varies by fund and investor circumstances. | May be less tax-efficient; daily resets can generate significant short-term capital gains that may not be offset by a loss. |
| Typical decision needs | Still requires attention to benchmark, diversification, risk tolerance and time horizon. | Requires understanding the daily objective and reset, the ability to monitor the position and a strategy that justifies the additional complexity. |
Costs: look beyond the headline expense ratio
Start with the current fee table
Before buying any ETF, open the current prospectus and compare its fee table and total annual operating expenses. The fee percentage is only one component of the return you receive, and it can change when a fund’s fee waiver expires or its documents are updated. A comparison is meaningful only when it identifies the specific fund, share class, fee-table date and geography.

The SEC’s Mutual Fund and ETF Fees and Expenses – Investor Bulletin (July 23, 2025) explains that fees and expenses reduce returns. It also notes that indirect costs can include securities-lending and portfolio-transaction costs.
Account for trading friction
Your effective cost can include the bid-ask spread, brokerage commissions where applicable, the price you pay relative to net asset value (NAV), and the cost of buying or selling in a volatile or thin market. A fund can have a low stated operating expense but still be expensive to trade. Frequent rebalancing or short holding periods make those frictions more consequential.
Why leverage can add expense pressure
Derivatives, collateral management, financing arrangements, turnover and the operational work of resetting exposure can create additional costs. The SEC cautions that leveraged and inverse ETFs may be more costly than traditional ETFs. That is a general warning, not a universal fee ranking: do not assume every leveraged ETF has a higher expense ratio than every conventional ETF without comparing current documents.
Taxes can change the after-tax result
The SEC notes that leveraged and inverse ETFs may be less tax-efficient than traditional ETFs. Daily resets can produce significant short-term capital gains, and those gains may not be offset by a loss in the same way an investor expects. Distributions and the tax character of gains depend on the fund’s transactions and your account and tax status.
Use the fund’s latest prospectus, shareholder reports and tax documents to understand its distribution history and stated tax risks. For a decision involving a taxable account, a large position or a complex strategy, ask a qualified tax professional how the rules apply to your circumstances. Do not infer your tax bill from the fund’s leverage multiple alone.

Who might use a leveraged ETF?
Short-term directional traders
A trader who has a defined, short-term view and can monitor the position may use a daily leveraged objective to obtain temporary exposure without buying the underlying securities directly. The trader must understand that the target applies to each trading day, not to an open-ended holding period, and must have an exit or rebalancing plan.
Hedgers
An investor or institution may use an inverse or leveraged product to hedge a specific exposure for a limited period. The hedge can be imperfect because the ETF’s benchmark, reset schedule, market price and derivatives may not match the assets being hedged. The SEC recognizes that some trading or hedging strategies may justify holding these funds longer than one day, but that is not a blanket endorsement.
Who should be especially cautious
The SEC describes leveraged and inverse ETFs as specialized and generally not suitable for buy-and-hold investors. Caution is warranted if you cannot monitor the position, cannot explain the daily objective, need a predictable long-term index return, or would be unable to tolerate a rapid, amplified loss. A long time horizon by itself does not remove daily-reset risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who may prefer a regular index ETF?
A conventional index ETF may better fit an investor seeking broad market exposure, diversification or a long-term allocation that aims to track an index rather than magnify each day’s move. It remains subject to market declines, concentration in its benchmark, tracking difference, liquidity and other fund-specific risks. The choice is about objective and mechanics, not a guarantee that one structure will outperform another.

A decision framework before you buy
- State the job of the position. Write down whether you need long-term index exposure, a short-term directional trade or a hedge. If you cannot state the purpose and expected holding period, pause.
- Identify the exact daily target. Confirm the benchmark, whether the fund is long or inverse, the leverage factor and the time period over which the objective is measured.
- Model the holding period honestly. Ask what happens if the index alternates between gains and losses, trends steadily, gaps overnight or becomes highly volatile. Do not multiply a one-day target by the number of days.
- Read the prospectus. Check the strategy, reset process, derivatives, principal risks, collateral, fees, distribution policy and any warnings about holding periods.
- Compare full costs. Review total annual operating expenses, spreads, commissions, NAV premiums or discounts, portfolio transaction costs and any financing or derivative-related costs described in the documents.
- Check tax consequences. Determine whether the account is taxable and review the fund’s tax-risk language and prior distributions. Obtain professional tax advice when the position could create a material liability.
- Set monitoring and exit rules. Decide how often you will review the position, what loss you can tolerate, how you will rebalance and what event will end the trade. A daily-reset product should not be left unattended by accident.
- Match the risk to your circumstances. Consider objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, time horizon and ability to understand the product. The SEC encourages investors to consider advice from a professional familiar with these ETFs.
Questions to ask in the fund documents
- What index or benchmark does the fund use, and is the benchmark the exposure I actually need?
- Is the stated multiple measured before fees and expenses, and how does the fund reset exposure?
- Which swaps, futures or other derivatives can the fund use, and what counterparty and collateral protections apply?
- What are the current total annual operating expenses, and are any waivers temporary?
- How liquid is the ETF, and how wide have its bid-ask spreads and premiums or discounts to NAV been?
- What distributions and short-term capital gains could occur in my account?
- What happens if I hold longer than one trading day?
- How does this ETF fit with my investment objectives and comfort with risk?
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating “2x” as a long-term promise
Fix: Treat the multiple as a daily objective. Evaluate the sequence of daily returns and the fund’s reset mechanics before considering a multi-day position.

Mistake: judging risk from the benchmark’s direction alone
Fix: Examine volatility and path. A benchmark can finish higher while a leveraged ETF loses money, as the SEC’s four-month examples illustrate.
Mistake: comparing only expense ratios
Fix: Include spreads, commissions, NAV deviations, turnover, securities-lending and portfolio-transaction costs, along with the operating expense figure.
Mistake: assuming a long holding period makes the product safer
Fix: Ask whether your strategy specifically depends on daily leverage or hedging. Time can increase the effect of compounding and volatility rather than smooth it away.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish
The evidence supports a clear structural distinction: regular index ETFs seek index tracking, while leveraged ETFs generally seek a daily multiple. It also supports warnings about daily reset, compounding, volatility, derivatives, costs and tax efficiency. It does not establish a universal current expense-ratio gap, a guaranteed performance pattern or a fund that is suitable for everyone. Any named-fund decision requires that fund’s current prospectus, benchmark, leverage factor, fee-table date and applicable market and tax details.
For U.S. investors, begin with the SEC’s investor bulletins, then read the specific fund documents before placing an order. The right question is not “Which structure always wins?” but “Which objective, holding period and risk process can I understand and carry out?”
