Choose the Nano X when phone-based use, Bluetooth, a battery and iOS support matter. The Ledger Flex is the sensible touchscreen upgrade, while the Ledger Stax is the premium choice for its larger curved display, personalization and Qi charging. Ledger’s newer Nano Gen5 is the lower-cost touchscreen model in the 2025 Nano generation, but its current regional price should be verified before purchase.
The models protect private keys with a Secure Element, but they differ materially in price, controls, connectivity, certification level and backup convenience. The right purchase depends less on owning the “safest” name and more on how you sign transactions, whether you need a phone workflow and how much you value a readable display.

Ledger models at a glance
The prices below are Ledger’s published comparison figures. They are not a guarantee of today’s local checkout price; taxes, currency conversion, regional availability and later price changes can alter what you pay. Ledger’s guide identifies Nano Gen5 as the 2025 Nano generation but does not state one universal price.
| Model | Published price | Display and controls | Connectivity | Security and recovery details | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano S Plus | $79 | Small monochrome OLED with buttons | USB-C only | CC EAL6+ Secure Element; no Recovery Key included | Lowest-cost wired cold storage |
| Nano X | $149 | Small monochrome OLED with buttons | USB-C and Bluetooth; battery operation | CC EAL5+ Secure Element; no Recovery Key included | Phone and mobile use |
| Flex | $249 | 2.84-inch flat, 16-gray E Ink touchscreen | USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC | CC EAL6+; Transaction Check; Recovery Key included | Frequent signing with a touchscreen |
| Stax | $399 | 3.7-inch curved, 16-gray E Ink touchscreen | USB-C, Bluetooth, NFC and Qi wireless charging | CC EAL6+; Transaction Check; Recovery Key included | Premium display, personalization and charging convenience |
| Nano Gen5 | Verify current regional price | 2.8-inch flat E Ink touchscreen | USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC | CC EAL6+; Transaction Check; Recovery Key included | Newer touchscreen entry point |
Ledger says its three next-generation signers—Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5—share an EAL6+ Secure Element, full Clear Signing, Transaction Check and Ledger Security Key app support. That common architecture does not make the devices identical: the screen, charging method, price and physical workflow remain very different.

What a Ledger hardware wallet changes
A hardware wallet is a dedicated signer. Your private keys are kept in the device’s Secure Element rather than being left in the general-purpose environment of a phone or computer. A wallet application prepares a transaction, the device presents transaction information for review and the device authorizes the signature.
The practical benefit is control over the signing step. A larger screen can make a long address or amount easier to inspect; a cable, Bluetooth link or NFC connection changes how the transaction reaches the device, not which model is economically appropriate. Ledger’s newer signers add secure touchscreen interaction, Clear Signing and Transaction Check, features intended to make what you are approving easier to verify.
Hardware ownership does not remove backup responsibility. The recovery phrase or Recovery Key is the route to restoring access if a device is lost or damaged. Treat it as the most sensitive item in the setup: keep it offline, do not photograph it or place it in cloud storage, and never disclose it to someone claiming to provide support.

Which Ledger should you buy?
Choose Nano S Plus for straightforward, cable-based storage
At the published $79 price, Nano S Plus is the clearest value choice for a person who mainly wants cold storage and does not need a wireless or touchscreen workflow. It uses USB-C only, has a small monochrome OLED and button controls, and carries a CC EAL6+ rating.
This is a good fit when the device will stay at home, transactions are occasional and connecting it to a computer or compatible phone with a cable is acceptable. You are paying for the core hardware-wallet function without the battery, Bluetooth, NFC or larger display found on other models.
The trade-off is convenience. Button navigation and a small display require more deliberate scrolling, and the box does not include a Recovery Key. You must plan your own secure backup workflow rather than treating the purchase as a complete backup system.
Choose Nano X when your phone is part of the routine
Nano X costs $149 in Ledger’s published comparison material. Its premium over Nano S Plus buys Bluetooth, battery operation and iOS support, while retaining a small monochrome OLED and button controls.

The battery is a convenience feature, not a reason to keep the device permanently connected or charged. If you rarely use a phone and are comfortable with USB-C, the extra $70 does not buy a larger screen or touchscreen review.

Nano X is listed with a CC EAL5+ Secure Element, compared with EAL6+ for Nano S Plus and the next-generation models. Certification levels are one data point, not a complete ranking of real-world safety; your recovery practices and transaction verification still matter.
Choose Flex for the practical touchscreen upgrade
Flex is priced at $249 and adds a 2.84-inch flat 16-gray E Ink touchscreen, USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC. It includes a Recovery Key and supports the next-generation feature set Ledger describes: CC EAL6+, full Clear Signing, Transaction Check and Ledger Security Key app support.
For people who sign often, the screen is the main reason to move beyond Nano S Plus or Nano X. A flat display is easier to handle in a normal desk or travel setup than a premium curved device, and the price is substantially below Stax. Flex is the balanced choice when you want modern interaction and wireless options without paying for the largest display or Qi charging.

If you will make only a few transactions a year and never need Bluetooth or NFC, Nano S Plus performs the essential job at a much lower published price.
Choose Stax for the largest display and premium handling
Stax is the $399 option. Its 3.7-inch curved 16-gray E Ink touchscreen is the largest in this comparison, and it adds Qi wireless charging to USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC. It includes a Recovery Key and the same next-generation security and transaction-verification features listed for Flex.
The extra $150 over Flex is primarily a usability and presentation decision: a larger curved display, personalization and wireless charging. That can be worthwhile for a frequent signer who values at-a-glance readability and a polished desk setup. It is difficult to justify on price alone if your only objective is to hold assets offline and sign occasionally.
Consider Nano Gen5 for a newer, smaller touchscreen
Ledger identifies Nano Gen5 as its 2025 Nano generation. It has a 2.8-inch flat E Ink touchscreen, USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC, plus an EAL6+ Secure Element, Transaction Check and an included Recovery Key. The guide does not state one fixed worldwide price, so confirm your regional figure before comparing it with Flex or Nano X.
Nano Gen5 is the logical candidate for someone who wants a touchscreen and next-generation features in a smaller Nano form factor. Its 2.8-inch display is close in size to Flex’s 2.84-inch screen, while Stax remains the choice for a substantially larger curved display. Because pricing and availability can vary by region, compare the actual checkout total rather than assuming it is automatically the cheapest touchscreen model.

Security, certification and recovery: what actually differs
Secure Element ratings
Nano S Plus, Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 are listed with CC EAL6+ Secure Elements; Nano X is listed with CC EAL5+. These Common Criteria ratings describe evaluation assurance for the security component. They should not be read as a promise that one model can prevent every mistake, malicious transaction or lost backup.
Ledger’s guide specifically groups Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 together as next-generation signers with EAL6+, full Clear Signing, Transaction Check and Ledger Security Key app support. Ledger’s guide does not establish that every older model lacks every transaction-review capability, so the useful distinction is the documented next-generation touchscreen and verification package rather than an exaggerated “safe versus unsafe” label.
Clear Signing and Transaction Check
Clear Signing means the device is designed to show the transaction information you need to review before approval. Transaction Check is listed for Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5. Use these features as a pause point: check the destination, amount and other displayed details before confirming, especially when a website or application prompted the transaction.

Recovery Key and self-custody
Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 include a Recovery Key; Nano S Plus and Nano X do not. An included physical backup can simplify initial setup, but it does not transfer responsibility to Ledger. Whoever controls the recovery material can potentially restore the wallet, so store it separately from the device and protect it against theft, loss and physical damage.
Ledger Recover is a separate optional subscription service provided by Coincover. It should not be treated as equivalent to keeping a self-custodied recovery seed. Decide before setup whether you want a purely offline backup process or an optional recovery service, and understand that the two approaches have different trust and access assumptions.
Connectivity and day-to-day workflow
| Need | Most suitable models | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest purchase price and occasional desktop use | Nano S Plus | USB-C-only design and $79 published price |
| Bluetooth and iPhone-oriented mobility | Nano X | Bluetooth, battery operation and stated iOS support |
| Touchscreen review without premium pricing | Flex or Nano Gen5 | Flat E Ink touchscreen; compare Flex’s published price with Nano Gen5’s regional price |
| Largest readable display and wireless charging | Stax | 3.7-inch curved screen and Qi charging |
| NFC as part of the preferred connection method | Flex, Stax or Nano Gen5 | These are the models listed with NFC |
USB-C is the common wired option across all five models. Bluetooth is listed for Nano X, Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5. NFC is listed only for the three next-generation signers, and Qi wireless charging is unique to Stax in this comparison. Connectivity should be selected for convenience, not confused with custody: the device’s role is still to protect keys and authorize signatures.

Start with the published device price, then account for the practical setup you will need. A USB-C cable may be necessary for a wired workflow, and a protective case or dedicated metal or fire-resistant storage can add cost. Those accessories are not included in the model prices above.
Do not treat a Recovery Key as a recurring subscription. Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 include one, while Nano S Plus and Nano X do not. Ledger Recover is optional and subscription-based, so include its ongoing cost only if you deliberately choose that service.

Availability, seller quality and regional compatibility were not established by the published model comparison. Before paying, verify that the exact model is available in your country, that the displayed currency and taxes are clear, and that the seller is one you trust. Hardware-wallet security can be undermined by a compromised purchasing or setup process even when the device specification is sound.
A sensible selection and setup process
- Write down your workflow. Decide whether the wallet will stay wired at a desk, travel with you, connect to a phone, or be used for frequent transaction signing.
- Set your display requirement. Choose button navigation and a small OLED for lowest cost, Flex or Nano Gen5 for a flat touchscreen, or Stax for the largest curved display.
- Check the connection you actually need. Select Nano S Plus for USB-C-only use; Nano X for the documented Bluetooth, battery and iOS combination; or a next-generation model if NFC is important.
- Compare the real regional total. Use $79, $149, $249 and $399 as Ledger’s published comparison figures, but verify Nano Gen5’s current regional price, taxes and availability.
- Initialize through Ledger Wallet. Follow the current on-screen setup and firmware instructions for your model. Asset and app support can change with firmware and Ledger Wallet updates.
- Create and protect the backup. Record the recovery phrase or use the supplied Recovery Key where included. Keep it offline and separate from the device; never enter it into a website, message or unsolicited support form.
- Verify before signing. Review the details displayed on the device. On Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5, use Clear Signing and Transaction Check as part of that review rather than approving from the computer or phone screen alone.
- Test your recovery plan carefully. Make sure you understand how restoration works before you need it, without exposing the backup material to anyone else.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Paying for features you will not use
Bluetooth, NFC, batteries, curved screens and Qi charging are convenience features. If your wallet will remain in a drawer and be connected by USB-C a few times each year, Nano S Plus leaves more of your budget available for secure backup storage.
Choosing by certification number alone
EAL6+ versus EAL5+ is not a substitute for good transaction review and backup discipline. A high-rated device with an exposed recovery phrase is a poor security outcome; a less expensive device used with careful verification can be entirely appropriate for its intended workflow.
Assuming a bundled backup removes responsibility
The Recovery Key included with Flex, Stax and Nano Gen5 is useful, but anyone who obtains it may be able to restore access. Store it as deliberately as you would an unbundled recovery phrase.
Assuming all apps and assets work forever
Ledger states that app and asset support can change with firmware and Ledger Wallet updates. Check current support for the assets you intend to hold before buying, and keep the device software current through the documented update process.
Confusing a recovery subscription with self-custody
Ledger Recover, provided by Coincover, is optional and separate from your own offline recovery material. Decide which model matches your risk tolerance instead of assuming the subscription is simply a replacement for a backup.
Bottom-line decision
Buy Nano S Plus if price and wired cold storage come first. Pay for Nano X when Bluetooth, battery operation and iOS support materially improve your routine. Choose Flex for the best balance of touchscreen convenience, modern connectivity and price. Choose Stax when the largest display, personalization and Qi charging justify the premium. Consider Nano Gen5 if you want the newer Nano touchscreen design, after checking its current regional price.
