State Employees’ Credit Union ranked second at about $60.0 billion. The complete top-five list below uses rounded figures from NCUA Call Report data as displayed by the Q2 2026 credit-union ranking. The NCUA quarterly index identified June 2026 as the latest period available when checked on October 13, 2026.
“Most assets” is a balance-sheet ranking, not a quality or recommendation ranking. It shows which institutions reported the largest total asset balances for one quarterly reporting cycle; it does not tell you which credit union has the best rates, service, digital tools, eligibility, or member experience.

The five credit unions with the most assets in Q2 2026
The ranking covers 4,299 credit unions that filed for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Amounts are rounded, so use them for scale comparisons rather than as exact current balances.
| Rank | Credit union | Total assets (Q2 2026, rounded) | Headquarters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Navy Federal Credit Union | Approximately $204 billion | Vienna, Virginia |
| 2 | State Employees’ Credit Union | Approximately $60.0 billion | Raleigh, North Carolina |
| 3 | SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union | Approximately $37.2 billion | Santa Ana, California |
| 4 | Boeing Employees Credit Union | Approximately $29.6 billion | Tukwila, Washington |
| 5 | Pentagon Federal Credit Union | Approximately $29.2 billion | McLean, Virginia |
Navy Federal’s reported asset base was roughly $144 billion larger than the second-place institution and about 3.4 times as large on the rounded figures. The five institutions together represented approximately $360 billion in assets, calculated by adding the displayed rounded amounts. That sum is an indication of scale, not an audited combined balance.

What “most assets” means
Total assets are a point-in-time measure
Total assets are the balance-sheet amount reported for a specific Call Report period. This list therefore answers “which credit unions reported the largest asset balances for the quarter ended June 30, 2026?” It does not measure annual revenue, profit, capital strength, loan performance, customer satisfaction, or the value of products available to an individual member.
The figures are rounded and tied to one filing cycle
The ranking displays approximate amounts in billions. A later filing, correction, merger, or other balance-sheet change can alter both the dollar figures and the order. Do not treat a rounded $29.6 billion as an exact balance or assume that a small gap between two institutions proves a meaningful difference in financial condition.
The source is NCUA Call Report data
The ranking attributes its institution-level figures to National Credit Union Administration Call Reports. NCUA describes its quarterly summary reports as listings of summarized accounts collected from all federally insured credit unions. Its Call Report data catalog also provides quarterly files, an active-institution spreadsheet, a custom query tool, and individual financial-performance reports.

How to read the five positions
First place: Navy Federal Credit Union
Navy Federal is the clear size leader in this reporting cycle, with a rounded asset total more than three times that of the next institution. Its headquarters are in Vienna, Virginia. The ranking establishes its balance-sheet size and headquarters location; it does not establish that every consumer can join, that it operates branches near you, or that it offers the best account for your circumstances.
Second place: State Employees’ Credit Union
State Employees’ Credit Union is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its position shows a substantial asset base, but the ranking alone does not identify its membership rules, product pricing, branch coverage, or current financial-performance ratios. Those questions require the institution’s own disclosures and current NCUA data.
Third place: SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union
SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union is headquartered in Santa Ana, California. A third-place result indicates that its reported assets exceeded those of the fourth- and fifth-place institutions in this cycle. Rank order should not be read as a score: the table measures one balance-sheet dimension only.
Rank #3
Fourth place: Boeing Employees Credit Union
Boeing Employees Credit Union is headquartered in Tukwila, Washington. Its rounded asset figure is close to the fifth-place figure, so small revisions in a later data cycle could change the order without implying a dramatic change in either institution’s underlying operations.
Fifth place: Pentagon Federal Credit Union
Pentagon Federal Credit Union is headquartered in McLean, Virginia. It rounds to just below the fourth-place institution in this quarter’s display. As with every entry, the headquarters field identifies the reported headquarters, not the full geographic reach of membership or service.
System-wide context: a different reporting period
To put the ranking in context, NCUA’s March 6, 2026 system-performance release covered the quarter ended December 31, 2025, not June 2026. Keeping those periods separate matters because the system can change between quarters.
Rank #4
| Measure | NCUA Q4 2025 figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Total assets of federally insured credit unions | $2.43 trillion | Size of the entire federally insured system for Q4 2025 |
| Year-over-year asset change | $126 billion increase, or 5.4% | Change over the year ending Q4 2025 |
| Members | 144.7 million | System membership at Q4 2025 |
| Federally insured credit unions | 4,287 | Institution count at Q4 2025 |
| Loans outstanding | $1.72 trillion | System loan balance at Q4 2025 |
| Net income | $18.8 billion | System net income reported for 2025 |
NCUA also reported that the number of federally insured credit unions fell from 4,455 in Q4 2024 to 4,287 in Q4 2025, consistent with a long-running consolidation trend. The 4,287 figure should not be substituted for the 4,299 institutions that filed in the Q2 2026 ranking: they refer to different quarters and reporting populations.
These system figures provide scale, but they cannot be used to infer the Q2 2026 assets of any one institution. The official release is available at NCUA’s Q4 2025 system-performance page.
How to verify a newer ranking
Quarterly data is updated as new Call Reports are filed and validated. Use this process when you need a reproducible list after June 2026:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Open NCUA’s quarterly data summary reports and select the latest completed quarter.
- Confirm the reporting date, such as March 31, June 30, September 30, or December 31. Record the date before comparing institutions.
- Use the total-assets field to sort institutions from largest to smallest. Do not substitute loans, deposits, membership, net worth, or annual income for total assets.
- Check whether the file covers federally insured institutions or a stated filing population, and retain that definition with your results.
- Save the downloaded file or query output, the access date, and the cycle date. This preserves the exact version used for your comparison.
- Review later corrections before publishing or relying on the result. NCUA notes that CUOnline data are dynamic and become available after a Call Report is validated as a complete submission; corrections can change displayed values.
For a custom comparison, NCUA’s data catalog links to quarterly files, a spreadsheet of active federally insured credit unions containing assets, membership, and loans, and tools for querying individual institutions. Those resources are better suited to questions such as “which large credit unions serve my state?” than a national asset-only ranking.

Use size as a starting filter
A large asset base can help you identify institutions with substantial scale, but it does not answer whether you meet the field-of-membership requirement or whether the accounts fit your needs. Start with eligibility, location or online access, and the specific product you need.
Compare separate dimensions instead of creating a single “best” score
| Dimension | Question it answers | Why it must remain separate from assets |
|---|---|---|
| Total assets | How large was the reported balance sheet in the selected quarter? | It is a scale measure, not a service or suitability rating. |
| Membership | How many members does the institution report? | Membership size and asset size can move differently. |
| Loans | How much lending was outstanding? | Loans are one balance-sheet category, not total assets. |
| Geography and access | Can you join and use branches, ATMs, or digital channels where you live? | Headquarters does not describe the complete service footprint. |
| Pricing and features | What are the current rates, fees, limits, and account features? | Those terms are not contained in an asset ranking. |
| Reporting date | When were the figures measured? | Comparisons across different quarters can mix changing market conditions. |
Check the institution’s current terms
After using assets to narrow a list, verify membership eligibility, deposit and loan rates, fees, minimums, service hours, digital capabilities, and access to cash. These details can change independently of the institution’s rank and should be read from current disclosures rather than inferred from size.
Common mistakes when using an asset ranking
- Mixing quarters: A Q2 2026 institution ranking should not be combined with Q4 2025 system totals as though they were measured on the same date.
- Treating rounded numbers as exact: Displayed billions are approximate and may hide differences within the rounding interval.
- Assuming bigger means safer or better: Asset size does not establish profitability, capital adequacy, service quality, rates, or suitability.
- Using headquarters as a branch map: A headquarters city is one geographic attribute, not a complete description of where members can join or transact.
- Ignoring data revisions: NCUA data can change after corrections and validation. Preserve the extraction date and check the latest file before making a consequential comparison.
- Confusing institution counts: The Q2 ranking’s 4,299 filers and NCUA’s 4,287 federally insured credit unions for Q4 2025 are not interchangeable statistics.
What this list can tell you
The Q2 2026 ranking provides a clear answer to a narrow question: which U.S. credit unions reported the largest total asset balances for the quarter ended June 30, 2026? It also shows how concentrated the top of the list is, with the first-place institution far ahead of the rest and the fourth- and fifth-place institutions close together on rounded figures.
For a personal-finance decision, treat the list as an initial scale reference. Pair it with the latest NCUA filing, the credit union’s eligibility rules and product disclosures, and your own requirements for access, price, and service. That approach keeps a useful size comparison from becoming an unsupported recommendation.
