Cancellation removes only the unfilled remainder; contracts that already filled are not reversed. If cancellation or editing is unavailable, the order’s current state, its execution instructions, or Kraken’s trading mode usually explains why.
How to cancel an open Kraken Futures order
Kraken’s single-collateral derivatives interface separates ordinary resting orders from trigger-based orders. Use the section that matches the order you placed:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open Orders: Find unfilled or partially filled limit and other currently open orders.
- Conditional Orders: Find stop-loss and take-profit orders that are waiting for their trigger.
- Open the relevant order list and identify the instrument, side, quantity, price or trigger, and order ID.
- Select the cancel control beside that order.
- Refresh or recheck the list and then inspect fills and order history to confirm the resulting state.
Kraken also provides Cancel All. Use it only when you intend to remove every displayed open order covered by that control; it is not a way to cancel one selected order. A partially filled order can be cancelled, but the filled contracts remain part of the position or trade history.
Labels and available controls can vary by product, interface version, and order state. If an order is no longer shown as open, look in fills and order history before attempting another cancellation.

Editing an order without losing track of its state
Kraken documents editing for unfilled and partially filled open orders. In the documented interface, editing changes the order’s price or quantity. Changing the order type or trigger signal requires cancelling the existing order and submitting a new one instead. See Kraken’s cancellation and editing instructions at Trading Single-Collateral Derivatives.
An edit is an execution change, not merely a label change. A new price can immediately match available liquidity or be rejected under the applicable checks. Review the resulting order state rather than assuming the edited order is still resting.
What happens to queue priority?
- Reducing quantity preserves the order’s existing queue position under Kraken’s documented behavior.
- Changing price or increasing quantity sends the order to the back of price-time priority.
Consequently, an edit can change when the order is eligible to match. It may also change whether the order is immediately executable.

Why an order is only partially filled
Market orders and the 1% collar
A market order seeks immediate execution against available liquidity and may trade through several incremental prices. Kraken states that its matching protection will not execute a market order more than 1% above the best ask or more than 1% below the best bid. If insufficient quantity is available inside that boundary, part of the order can fill and the unfilled remainder is cancelled rather than left on the book. The 1% figure is Kraken’s documented protection, updated October 1, 2026; it is not a promise of a particular fill price or of complete execution. Details are in Order types in Derivatives trading.
Limit orders and resting liquidity
A limit order can execute only at its limit price or a better price. If immediately available liquidity is insufficient, the order rests on the order book for a later match. Kraken says a limit price that crosses the spread and lies outside its 20% mark-price collar is rejected. Margin is required when the order is placed, and Kraken states that an open limit order is cancelled if portfolio value falls below the initial-margin requirement. Those rules explain some rejections or automatic cancellations, but they do not describe every possible account or system outcome.
| Order type | Immediacy | Price control | Liquidity and remainder behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market | Attempts immediate execution | No fixed execution price; Kraken’s 1% best-ask/bid collar applies | Can fill at multiple prices; quantity outside the collar can remain unfilled and is cancelled |
| Limit | May execute now or rest on the book | Executes only at the limit price or better | Unmatched quantity can remain open until filled, cancelled, rejected, or otherwise closed by a documented rule |
Check the fills record to distinguish a partial execution from a cancellation before concluding that the whole order failed.

How post-only, IOC, reduce-only and trigger instructions affect cancellation
Post-only (maker-only)
Post-only requires the limit order not to execute immediately. If its price would match resting liquidity as soon as it arrives, Kraken rejects and cancels it. The derivatives error reference labels this condition POST_WOULD_EXECUTE. A post-only cancellation therefore usually means the chosen price would have taken liquidity, not that a later market event removed an otherwise resting order.
Immediate-or-cancel (IOC)
IOC tells Kraken to execute whatever quantity is immediately available and cancel the rest. Kraken’s documented wording is: “An immediate-or-cancel order will execute at the price and quantity available – the remainder of the order will be cancelled and will not enter the book.” If no quantity can execute immediately, the order can be rejected or cancelled at once; the error reference calls the incompatible condition IOC_WOULD_ENTER_BOOK.
Reduce-only
A reduce-only order may only decrease an existing position. Kraken can automatically reduce an oversized reduce-only order to the open position size. Trigger-order acceptance rules can differ from ordinary limit and market orders, so evaluate the exact order type rather than applying one blanket rule. If the order would violate the position direction or size constraint, the error reference uses VIOLATES_REDUCE_ONLY. Additional option details are documented in Other order options.
Stop and other trigger orders
Stop-loss and take-profit orders are not visible in the order book before their trigger, according to Kraken’s order-options documentation. After triggering, the resulting order is subject to the relevant margin and price-collar checks and can be rejected if a check fails. That is why a trigger order may remain absent from the ordinary book while waiting, then acquire a different state at the trigger moment.
Paired stop-loss and take-profit (OCO)
For Kraken bracket orders, if either trigger fires, the other is automatically cancelled. This one-cancels-the-other behavior is described in Derivatives order types. Seeing one leg disappear after the other executes is therefore expected OCO behavior, not evidence that both orders independently failed.

Kraken’s trading mode controls which actions the matching engine accepts. The mode can change independently of your account and is therefore worth checking whenever a cancel button is disabled or a request fails.
Best Value
| Trading mode | Can submit new orders? | Can cancel open orders? | Does matching occur? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online | Yes, subject to order rules | Yes, subject to order state | Yes |
| Cancel Only | No | Yes | No |
| Maintenance | No | No | No |
| Post Only | Only post-only limit orders | Yes | No |
| Limit Only | Only limit orders; market orders are rejected | Yes | No |
Kraken describes Cancel Only as a state in which pending orders can be cancelled but new orders cannot be placed. Maintenance is different: existing orders cannot be cancelled, new orders cannot be entered, and matching does not occur. Do not keep retrying a cancel request during Maintenance; first confirm that the mode has changed.
Current mode information may appear through Kraken’s REST SystemStatus endpoint, WebSocket status messages, the status API, Kraken’s status page, trading pages, or the Kraken Pro mobile app. The live mode is volatile, so check one of those current channels rather than relying on an old screenshot or a previously observed state. Kraken’s mode definitions are in What are the possible trading modes?, updated October 7, 2026.
What “order for cancellation not found” means
The official derivatives error ORDER_FOR_CANCELLATION_NOT_FOUND means Kraken could not find the supplied order ID in that account’s open orders. The message does not, by itself, tell you whether the order filled, was already cancelled, expired, was replaced by an edit, or changed state for another reason.
- Search the order ID in the current Open Orders list.
- Inspect fills and trade history for executions associated with that ID.
- Inspect order history for a cancelled, rejected, expired, or otherwise closed state.
- Confirm that you are viewing the same account, collateral wallet, instrument, and environment used to place the order.
- Retry cancellation only if the order is still shown as open and the platform mode permits cancellation.
Kraken’s Derivatives Trading Interface Error Messages lists this and related conditions. Treat the order history and fills as the source of truth for what happened to that specific order, rather than interpreting the error text as proof of a fill or a cancellation.
A practical diagnostic sequence
Use this sequence when the interface behaves unexpectedly:
- Identify the order class: ordinary open order, conditional trigger, post-only, IOC, reduce-only, or a bracket leg.
- Read the current state: open, partially filled, filled, cancelled, rejected, or absent from the open-order list.
- Check executions: record filled quantity before cancelling or editing anything else.
- Check instructions: post-only can cancel on immediate crossing; IOC cancels its remainder; reduce-only can be constrained by position size.
- Check platform mode: Maintenance blocks cancellation; Cancel Only permits cancellation but blocks new orders and matching.
- Check account conditions: margin and Kraken’s price-collar rules can cause rejection or automatic closure of an open limit order.
- Reconcile history: use the order ID, fills, and timestamps to determine whether a reported error reflects a completed state transition.
This process avoids the most costly misunderstanding: treating a cancelled remainder as though it erased contracts that already traded. Once a fill is recorded, cancellation cannot undo that execution; any later position management is a separate action.
