The test is different for nonresidents because only Kansas-source income is counted.
Calendar-year taxpayers who are not farmers or fishers generally pay on April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. A penalty is not automatic: timely payments may qualify for current-year, prior-year, or annualized-income exceptions. Schedule K-210 is the Kansas Department of Revenue worksheet for testing those exceptions and calculating any underpayment penalty.

Who needs to pay Kansas estimated tax in 2026?
Kansas estimated tax is a way to prepay individual income tax on income that does not have enough Kansas withholding. The 2026 Kansas Department of Revenue Form K-40ES instructions identify self-employment earnings, unemployment compensation, interest, and dividends as examples. Income earned in another state while you live in Kansas can also affect the calculation.

- Your estimated Kansas income tax after withholding and credits is at least $500.
- Your withholding and credits may be less than the smaller of 90% of your 2026 Kansas tax or 100% of the tax shown on your 2025 Kansas return.
The $500 amount is not a stand-alone exemption. A taxpayer must satisfy the tax-dollar threshold and the smaller-of comparison. Conversely, a large amount of income without withholding does not by itself establish an obligation if the projected Kansas tax after credits is below $500.
Income that commonly creates an estimated-payment issue
- Self-employment: freelance, contract, gig, or business income often has no Kansas payroll withholding.
- Unemployment: benefits may not have enough Kansas withholding for the eventual liability.
- Interest and dividends: investment income generally arrives without Kansas withholding.
- Other-state earnings for a Kansas resident: income earned outside Kansas can still matter on a Kansas resident return, subject to applicable tax and credit rules.
Nonresidents
When a nonresident applies the 2026 estimated-tax test, the Kansas instructions say to consider only Kansas-source income. Do not use total income from every state as though it were all taxable by Kansas. Allocation and credit questions can be fact-specific, so a nonresident with several states, changing work locations, or pass-through income should work from the Kansas return instructions or obtain professional advice.
How to determine whether you have to make payments
Use this sequence before sending a voucher or electronic payment. It keeps the $500 requirement separate from the safe-harbor comparison.

- Estimate 2026 Kansas tax. Use the current K-40 materials and account for the credits you expect to claim.
- Subtract withholding and credits. The result is your estimated Kansas tax after withholding and credits.
- Check the $500 threshold. If the after-withholding-and-credits amount is below $500, the 2026 K-40ES trigger described by KDOR is not met. If it is at least $500, continue.
- Compute both comparison amounts. Calculate 90% of the projected 2026 Kansas tax and 100% of the tax shown on your 2025 Kansas return. Use the smaller amount, not whichever one happens to be easier to meet.
- Compare withholding and credits with that smaller amount. If they may be below it, plan estimated payments. If your income, withholding, credits, or filing status changes, redo the comparison rather than relying on an earlier estimate.
The comparison protects taxpayers whose current-year income changes sharply and also recognizes a qualifying prior-year liability. It is not an either/or rule in which you can select the more favorable percentage without first identifying the smaller benchmark.

| Installment | Due date | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| First | April 15, 2026 | Calendar-year taxpayers other than farmers and fishers |
| Second | June 15, 2026 | Calendar-year taxpayers other than farmers and fishers |
| Third | September 15, 2026 | Calendar-year taxpayers other than farmers and fishers |
| Fourth | January 15, 2027 | Calendar-year taxpayers other than farmers and fishers |
If a listed date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the next regular workday is substituted. Confirm the date on the current K-40ES voucher before paying, especially when a holiday changes the ordinary calendar.
The January filing-and-payment alternative
The final installment normally due January 15, 2027, need not be made if you file your 2026 Kansas return and pay the tax in full by January 31, 2027. This is a limited alternative for the January payment; it does not eliminate the earlier April, June, or September obligations. Filing and paying the balance also does not turn an omitted earlier installment into a timely payment for every penalty purpose, so use Schedule K-210 to evaluate the result.
Farmers and fishers
Farmers and fishers generally pay the 2026 estimated tax by January 15, 2027. They may instead file the 2026 return and pay the tax in full by March 1, 2027. Their penalty exception also uses a special current-year threshold of 66 2/3%, described below. The special rule does not automatically apply to every taxpayer whose income happens to be seasonal; use the farmer-and-fisher provisions in the current instructions.
Fiscal-year taxpayers
A taxpayer using a fiscal year does not use the calendar dates in the table. The K-40ES instructions place installments on the 15th day of the fourth, sixth, and ninth months of the current fiscal year and the first month of the following fiscal year. A weekend or legal holiday moves the deadline to the next regular workday.
How Kansas underpayment-penalty exceptions work
KDOR states in the 2026 instructions, “If you do not pay enough estimated tax, a penalty may be charged.” The key word is may: a taxpayer can avoid the penalty when each required payment is timely and total payments and credits satisfy a listed exception. Meeting a percentage without making the installments on time is not a universal defense.

| Exception | Test stated in the 2026 K-40ES instructions | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year tax | Payments and credits reach at least 90% of 2026 tax | Farmers and fishers use 66 2/3% for this current-year test |
| Prior-year tax | Payments and credits reach at least 100% of the tax shown on the 2025 return | The prior-year return must cover 12 months and show a tax liability |
| Annualized income | Payments and credits reach at least 90% of the tax calculated on annualized income for the specified periods | Use the annualization method and periods in Schedule K-210 |
Each exception has to be tested with the payment-timing requirement. A prior-year return that does not cover 12 months or does not show tax liability does not satisfy the prior-year description in the instructions. Likewise, the annualized method is not a general estimate based on a single unusually high or low month; it follows the periods and worksheet calculations in K-210.
Use Schedule K-210 instead of guessing at the penalty
Schedule K-210 is the Kansas schedule for determining whether estimated payments were insufficient, checking the available exceptions, and calculating any penalty due. It is the appropriate place to reconcile what you paid with the dates and amounts required under the applicable method.
What to gather before completing K-210
- Your 2026 Kansas tax projection and the credits included in that projection.
- All Kansas withholding amounts shown on wage and payment statements.
- The tax shown on your 2025 Kansas return, including whether that return covered 12 months and showed liability.
- The date and amount of every estimated payment, including electronic confirmations or mailed-payment records.
- Your filing status, residency information, and whether the farmer-and-fisher provisions apply.
- Income changes by period if you intend to use the annualized-income exception.
A practical K-210 workflow
- Enter the tax, withholding, credits, and prior-year figures requested by the current schedule.
- Record each installment by its actual payment date and amount, rather than entering only the annual total.
- Check the current-year, prior-year, and annualized-income tests that apply to your facts.
- Verify that the installments used for an exception were timely under the relevant due dates.
- Follow the schedule’s calculation to determine whether a penalty is due and carry the result to the Kansas return as directed.
The 2025 Kansas individual income-tax booklet also directs taxpayers with a qualifying balance due to Schedule K-210. For a 2026 return, however, use the 2026 K-40ES instructions and the applicable 2026 schedule rather than treating the 2025 booklet as the controlling year.
How much should each estimated payment be?
Kansas does not give every taxpayer one universal payment amount in the K-40ES instructions. Your installments depend on projected 2026 tax, withholding, credits, prior-year tax, income timing, and whether a special rule applies. Start with the K-40ES calculation, then allocate the required amount to the applicable installment dates. Keep a worksheet that shows how each payment was derived.
If wages or another source of withholding will change during the year, update the projection and future installments. A midyear increase in self-employment income, a new investment distribution, or a reduction in wage withholding can turn an earlier estimate into an underpayment risk. Conversely, additional Kansas withholding or credits may reduce the remaining amount needed.

Do not substitute a federal estimated-tax figure for the Kansas amount. Kansas tax rates, additions, credits, residency sourcing, and prior-year information belong in the Kansas calculation.

The 2026 K-40ES materials direct individuals to Kansas Department of Revenue electronic payment services, including the Kansas tax payment portal and the Customer Service Center. KDOR also provides paper vouchers and mailing instructions. A credit-card option is available through third-party payment vendors; check the live payment page for current terms and any vendor charges before using it.
| Payment route | What to do | Record to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic | Use the Kansas tax payment portal or Customer Service Center and select the individual estimated-tax payment option. | Confirmation number, date submitted, amount, and bank or card record |
| Mailed voucher | Complete the correct K-40ES voucher and mail it with payment using the address and instructions on the current form. | Copy of the voucher, payment instrument, and mailing evidence |
| Credit card through a vendor | Use the vendor option presented on KDOR’s current payment page after checking its terms. | Vendor receipt, confirmation, and the date the payment was accepted |
An estimated-tax payment does not replace a separately required Kansas income-tax return. Keep payment evidence until the return is filed and the possibility of a penalty has been resolved.
Common mistakes that create Kansas underpayment problems
Using the larger benchmark
The trigger compares withholding and credits with the smaller of 90% of current-year tax and 100% of prior-year tax. Choosing the larger benchmark can make a taxpayer appear protected when the K-40ES test says otherwise.
Stopping at the $500 figure
The $500 amount is one part of the trigger. It does not tell you to pay $500, and it does not by itself establish that a payment is required. Complete the withholding-and-credits comparison as well.

Ignoring payment timing
Paying the correct annual amount late can still fail a timely-payment condition. Enter actual dates in K-210 and account for weekend and legal-holiday adjustments.
Assuming a short prior-year return qualifies
The prior-year exception described by KDOR requires a return covering 12 months and showing tax liability. A short-year return or a return with no liability needs a different analysis.
Applying resident rules to a nonresident
Nonresidents use Kansas-source income for the estimated-tax test. Mixing in income that is not Kansas-source can overstate the Kansas projection.

Confusing individual and business rules
This guidance concerns Kansas individual income tax. Corporate, fiduciary, privilege, and other business-tax estimated-payment rules are separate and should not be substituted for the individual K-40ES rules.
Relying on an old form
Dates, payment channels, and calculations can change. Use the current K-40ES instructions, voucher, payment portal information, and Schedule K-210 for the year being filed.
When professional help is sensible
Consider Kansas tax advice when self-employment income is substantial or irregular, income is earned in several states, residency changes during the year, credits are complex, or the prior-year return does not fit the 12-month requirement. A professional can help classify Kansas-source income, project withholding and credits, and complete K-210, but you remain responsible for using current Kansas forms and meeting payment deadlines.
