The right choice depends on which legal entity and interface you can use, the contract’s exact rules, how you fund the account, the fee schedule in force when you trade, and how the platform resolves ambiguous information. KalshiEX LLC has been a CFTC-designated contract market since November 3, 2020. QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, has been a CFTC-designated contract market since July 9, 2025, according to a June 23, 2026 CFTC complaint. Other Polymarket interfaces may sit outside that U.S. product.
For Polymarket’s documented contract mechanics, shares trade from $0.00 to $1.00 in USDC, each fully collateralized YES/NO pair represents $1.00, and a winning share pays $1.00 USDC at resolution. Kalshi’s official policy describes its exchange as CFTC-regulated, but its current public fee page does not expose a single numeric rate that can be compared fairly with Polymarket. Read the individual market rules and the live fee pages before placing an order.

The short answer: which platform fits which trader?
Choose Kalshi when access to a U.S. CFTC-regulated exchange, federal reporting, identity verification, and exchange surveillance are your priorities, and when the markets you want are available within its permitted catalog. Choose Polymarket US only after confirming that you are using the U.S. CFTC-designated product and are eligible for it; its documented USDC share model is straightforward, but the legal and operational rules can differ across Polymarket interfaces and jurisdictions.
Neither platform is automatically cheaper. Kalshi publishes an exchange and clearinghouse fee schedule, but the material available for this comparison did not provide numeric rates. Polymarket’s primary documentation explains pricing and settlement but does not provide a complete, directly comparable fee table. A quote that appears cheaper can still cost more after trading fees, spread, funding or conversion costs, and withdrawal charges.

The most important practical rule is to compare contracts, not just platform names. Two markets with similar wording can name different data sources, use different cutoff times, apply different revision rules, or provide different challenge and review procedures.
What the regulatory labels actually mean
KalshiEX LLC
Kalshi’s policy center states: “Kalshi operates as a CFTC-regulated exchange under the Commodity Exchange Act.” The CFTC complaint dated June 23, 2026 identifies KalshiEX LLC as a CFTC-designated contract market since November 3, 2020. Kalshi’s policy materials also describe full know-your-customer checks, federal reporting, and market surveillance.
A designated contract market is a regulated U.S. derivatives venue, not a guarantee that every trade will be profitable or that every possible event can be listed. The exchange must operate within applicable CFTC rules and its own certified contracts. Those constraints affect which subjects appear in the catalog and how orders, reporting, and compliance are handled.
Polymarket US (QCX LLC)
The same June 23, 2026 CFTC complaint identifies QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, as a CFTC-designated contract market since July 9, 2025. That designation applies to the U.S. product identified in the filing. It should not be treated as a blanket statement about every website, app, account type, or jurisdiction using the Polymarket name.
Before depositing funds, confirm the legal entity shown in the account terms, the country rules that apply to you, and whether the interface is Polymarket US or another Polymarket service. A U.S. user should not infer eligibility from being able to load a page, and a non-U.S. user should not assume that the U.S. designation governs an account opened elsewhere.
Regulation is a perimeter, not a profit shield
Regulation can bring identity checks, reporting, surveillance, formal contract rules, and enforcement channels. It does not eliminate market risk, liquidity risk, technology failures, or the possibility that your interpretation of a contract is wrong. The CFTC’s February 2026 advisory described enforcement cases involving misuse of nonpublic information and fraud in prediction-market trading on KalshiEX. That illustrates why surveillance matters, while also showing that regulated status does not make participant behavior risk-free.

Fees: why a simple winner is not available
Kalshi maintains an official fee-schedule page for its exchange and clearinghouse. The page location was available, but the retrieved material did not expose numeric rates with an effective date that could be quoted responsibly. Rates can vary by product, order type, volume, or other schedule provisions, so check the live schedule immediately before trading.
Polymarket’s primary documentation explains how prices and settlement work but does not supply a complete numeric fee table suitable for a universal comparison. Fees may also depend on the specific market or liquidity program. Treat any article or social-media claim that Kalshi or Polymarket is always cheaper as time-sensitive unless it cites the current official schedule and the same transaction assumptions.

How to compare a trade’s all-in cost
- Record the displayed price and the number of shares or contracts.
- Open the platform’s fee disclosure for that market and note whether the charge is assessed at entry, exit, settlement, or more than one stage.
- Include the bid-ask spread. A zero headline fee does not mean a zero execution cost if you cross a wide spread.
- For Polymarket, include the cost of acquiring, transferring, or converting USDC and any network or withdrawal charge shown by the service.
- For Kalshi, include every exchange and clearing charge shown by the current schedule rather than relying on an old example.
- Calculate the net amount if the position wins, loses, or is sold before resolution. The three outcomes can have different costs.
Market catalogs and restrictions
Kalshi’s regulated catalog
Kalshi’s policy materials say it does not list markets involving war, death, nuclear war, assassination, kidnapping, rocket explosions, or missile strikes. The restriction is material when you are comparing a topic that appears on one platform but not the other. The exact availability of any contract still depends on the exchange’s certified product list and current rules.
Kalshi’s rulebook and product-certification materials govern how listed contracts are formed and administered. The rulebook version identified in the available material is version 1.29, dated August 17, 2026. A newer version can supersede it, so use the version attached to the market or the current rulebook when interpreting a disputed provision.
Polymarket’s catalog and jurisdictional differences
Polymarket’s market selection can differ between Polymarket US and other interfaces. A market visible in one jurisdiction is not evidence that it is available, lawful, or eligible in another. Account-level restrictions, geographic rules, and product terms must be checked before funding an account.

Do not assume that a similar title means identical exposure. One venue might define an event by an official announcement, another by a statistical release, and a third by a specified news or government source. The source, deadline, time zone, and treatment of revisions are part of the product.

How the contracts work
Polymarket’s documented share model
Polymarket’s official FAQ says shares are priced from $0.00 to $1.00 USDC. A YES share and a NO share for the same market are fully collateralized by $1.00 USDC. When the market resolves, shares representing the correct final outcome pay $1.00 USDC each.
The counterparty is another Polymarket user rather than a house. That means available liquidity, price impact, and the spread depend on other participants’ orders. You can sell shares before the event is known, so your realized result may come from the sale price rather than the final $1.00 payout. Selling early also removes your exposure to the eventual resolution.
Kalshi contracts
Kalshi’s exchange lists certified event contracts under its rulebook and product terms. The available material does not establish one universal payout currency or one settlement timetable for every Kalshi contract. Read the contract specifications attached to the exact market for the unit, tick value, settlement amount, expiration, and any early-close provision.
Do not import Polymarket’s $1.00-USDC mechanics into a Kalshi position, or assume that a Kalshi contract with YES and NO labels uses identical collateral or settlement procedures. The names may look familiar while the legal and operational terms differ.
Settlement: the clauses that decide who gets paid
Settlement is more than the final headline result. Before trading, identify six items in the market rules:
- Resolution source: the named government agency, exchange, statistical release, company filing, or other authority whose data controls the outcome.
- Determination authority: the party empowered to declare the result when information conflicts or the source changes.
- Cutoff and time zone: the precise deadline and the clock used to determine whether an event qualifies.
- Review or challenge process: how participants can contest a determination, the deadline for doing so, and who makes the final decision.
- Currency and payout: whether settlement is in USDC, cash, contract units, or another form, and the amount paid per winning unit.
- Ambiguous or revised data: what happens when a source issues a correction, withdraws a release, rounds a value, or reports conflicting figures.
Why similar wording can produce different outcomes
Suppose two markets ask whether an indicator will exceed a threshold. If one uses the first published release and the other uses the final revised release, the same real-world event can produce opposite settlements. A market that measures a calendar day in Eastern Time can differ from one using Coordinated Universal Time. A rule that counts an acting official can differ from one requiring a formally confirmed officeholder.

These are not theoretical drafting details. Settlement follows the written rule and named source, not what most traders believe the question meant. Save a copy or screenshot of the rules that applied when you entered, especially for markets likely to be revised.

Under Polymarket’s documented mechanics, the correct final outcome is paid $1.00 USDC per winning share when the market resolves. The FAQ’s fully collateralized YES/NO description explains the maximum payout structure, but it does not remove the need to read each market’s resolution criteria, source, and dispute procedure.

Kalshi’s rulebook and the individual product specification control determination and review. The available material identifies the rulebook version and the regulated framework but does not state one universal challenge period or settlement delay for all contracts. Know-your-customer and reporting
Kalshi’s policy page describes full KYC, federal reporting, and surveillance. Expect account verification and information requests consistent with a regulated U.S. exchange. Keep your deposits, withdrawals, fills, fees, and settlement records so that you can reconcile statements and address any reporting obligation that applies to you.
Polymarket US may impose its own verification and eligibility requirements, while other Polymarket interfaces can have different rules. Confirm the terms presented during account opening, not a generic description of the brand.

The material used for this comparison does not establish a single settlement currency for all Kalshi products. Use the contract terms and account funding instructions for the specific market. Comparing a dollar-denominated balance with a USDC-denominated balance requires including conversion, transfer, and withdrawal effects where they apply.
Risk controls and market integrity
Prediction-market positions can lose their entire stake or remain difficult to exit when liquidity disappears. A regulated venue can monitor trading and investigate misconduct, but it cannot guarantee an accurate forecast, a continuous bid, or a profitable exit.
- Limit the amount at risk on any one event and avoid treating a high probability as a certainty.
- Check open interest, displayed depth, and the spread before assuming that the quoted price is executable for your desired size.
- Do not trade on confidential information or attempt to manipulate a market. The CFTC’s February 2026 advisory described enforcement cases involving nonpublic information and fraud connected with KalshiEX trading.
- Expect prices to move when an official source releases preliminary, revised, or conflicting data.
- Keep a written record of your thesis, the contract wording, the resolution source, and the schedule date. This helps distinguish a bad forecast from a rule misunderstanding.
A practical decision framework
Use Kalshi when these conditions matter most
- You specifically want the KalshiEX CFTC-regulated exchange perimeter and its associated KYC, reporting, and surveillance framework.
- The contract you want is certified and does not fall within the excluded violent-event categories.
- You prefer to evaluate the exchange and clearinghouse schedule in the account’s stated currency and terms.
- You are comfortable checking the current rulebook and product specification for settlement details.
Use Polymarket US only after these checks
- Your account is clearly with QCX LLC doing business as Polymarket US, rather than an interface governed by different jurisdictional terms.
- You are eligible in your location and understand the account’s verification and withdrawal rules.
- You can manage USDC funding, transfers, conversion, and withdrawal costs.
- You have read the exact market’s resolution source, finality language, and dispute process.
Walk away or wait when
- The contract’s source or cutoff time is ambiguous.
- The fee disclosure is unavailable or you cannot determine the all-in cost.
- The spread and available depth are too poor for your intended position.
- Your legal eligibility, tax treatment, or ability to withdraw funds is unresolved.
- You are relying on a screenshot, old article, or social post instead of the current contract and platform terms.
Step-by-step checklist before placing an order
- Identify the legal product. Confirm whether you are using Kalshi, Polymarket US, or another Polymarket interface, and read the jurisdiction and eligibility notice.
- Open the contract specification. Read the question, outcome definitions, source, cutoff, time zone, settlement amount, and treatment of revisions.
- Check the current rules version. For Kalshi, compare the market with the applicable rulebook and product-certification materials; the identified August 17, 2026 rulebook is version 1.29, but a newer version may apply.
- Calculate the downside. Determine the maximum loss, the number of units, and what happens if you exit before resolution.
- Calculate all-in costs. Include platform fees, spread, funding, conversion, transfer, clearing, and withdrawal charges shown for your account.
- Verify liquidity. Inspect the order book and decide whether the displayed price is available for your entire order.
- Save evidence. Keep the contract rules, fee schedule date, order confirmation, and funding record.
- Recheck settlement status. After the event, verify the source’s publication and the platform’s determination rather than assuming an informal headline settles the market.
What can change after you open an account
Regulatory designations, market catalogs, fee schedules, eligibility rules, and settlement procedures are all time-sensitive. Kalshi’s CFTC designation dates and Polymarket US’s designation date are historical facts, not promises that every future product will have identical terms. A market can be suspended, delisted, or closed under its rules. A fee page can change while an account remains open.

For that reason, date-stamp the terms you rely on. The Kalshi policy quotation and Polymarket payout quotation cited above were accessed October 15, 2026; the CFTC complaint is dated June 23, 2026; and the CFTC market-integrity advisory is from February 2026. Use the current platform pages when you trade, especially if your transaction occurs after those dates.
Bottom line for personal-finance readers
Kalshi offers the clearer U.S. regulated-exchange identity in the materials available here, with stated KYC, reporting, surveillance, and restrictions on certain violent-event markets. Polymarket US also has a CFTC-designated-market status, but you must distinguish that product from other Polymarket interfaces and account jurisdictions. Polymarket’s $0.00-to-$1.00 USDC share model and $1.00 USDC winning-share payout are explicit; a universal Kalshi payout currency and a directly comparable numeric fee winner are not established here.
The financially sound comparison is therefore contract-by-contract: verify the legal entity, read the resolution rule, price every funding and trading cost, assess liquidity, and record the terms that applied when you entered.
