There is no nationwide winner between Jio 5G and Airtel 5G. TRAI regional measurements in Bengaluru, Delhi and Kerala recorded higher average 5G download speeds for Jio, while Opensignal’s national user study gave Airtel the 5G Upload Speed award and Jio the Reliability Experience award. Your better choice depends on signal inside your home and workplace, the routes you travel, upload needs, handset compatibility and the exact plan available in your telecom circle.
Use the comparison below as a decision framework rather than assuming a national award predicts your street. Check both operators’ coverage maps, test each SIM at the places that matter and compare current tariff terms before porting.

Jio vs Airtel 5G at a glance
| Decision factor | What the published measurements show | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 5G download speed | TRAI regional tests in Bengaluru, Delhi and Kerala recorded higher Jio averages. Opensignal’s October 2024 national study instead placed Airtel about 6.6% ahead of Jio at roughly 240 Mbps. | Results change with location, sampling and methodology. Test the places where you use data. |
| 5G upload speed | TRAI recorded Jio ahead in Bengaluru but Airtel ahead in Delhi. Opensignal’s 2025 award went to Airtel at 22.6 Mbps, 7 Mbps ahead of second-placed Jio. | Airtel may suit frequent video calls, cloud backups or live streaming, but local results can reverse the order. |
| Coverage | Both operators publish predictive maps based on signal assumptions. Jio’s map was updated 10 July 2026; Airtel’s map documents an RSRP threshold of -110 for 4G/5G and -95 for 2G under TRAI guidelines. | Map shading is not a guarantee of indoor service. Check your exact home, office and travel corridor. |
| Reliability | Opensignal’s June 2025 Reliability Experience award went to Jio with 860 points, 27 points ahead of Airtel. TRAI call-setup leaders differed by region. | Application reliability and voice reliability are related but not identical. Choose according to the failures you experience. |
| Plans and value | Current prices, validity, data allowances, bundled benefits and unlimited-5G rules vary by circle and change frequently. | Compare the live tariff filing and the operator’s checkout screen, not an old price list. |
Which network is faster?
“Faster” depends on whether you mean a single speed test, a regional average, a national user experience score, download or upload. The available evidence does not support one permanent winner.
TRAI regional measurements
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s regional releases provide measured averages for specific testing periods and locations. In each of the three listed regions, Jio’s average download result was higher:

| Region and release | Airtel average download | Jio (RJIL) average download | Airtel upload | Jio upload |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru, TRAI 2026 | 84.99 Mbps | 221.34 Mbps | 25.86 Mbps | 32.82 Mbps |
| Delhi, TRAI 2026 | 168.92 Mbps | 265.51 Mbps | 25.54 Mbps | 22.33 Mbps |
| Kerala, TRAI 2025 | 185.70 Mbps | 328.26 Mbps | Not stated in the cited release | Not stated in the cited release |
These are regional averages, not a promise for every tower or indoor room. Bengaluru shows a particularly large download gap in Jio’s favor, while Delhi shows Airtel with the higher upload figure. That reversal is why a national headline should not replace a local test.
Opensignal’s national user measurements
Opensignal’s October 2024 report awarded 5G Download Speed to Airtel at about 240 Mbps, describing it as 6.6% faster than Jio. The study’s 2025 5G Upload Speed result also favored Airtel at 22.6 Mbps, seven megabits per second ahead of second-placed Jio; the exact Jio score was not stated in the cited result.
The apparent conflict with TRAI is methodological rather than necessarily erroneous. TRAI regional releases and Opensignal user-experience awards use different samples, places, time windows and scoring methods. Treat them as directional evidence: Jio has a strong case for download-heavy use in the TRAI regions listed, while Airtel has strong national upload evidence and a separate download award.

How to interpret speed for your workload
- Large downloads and streaming: sustained download speed and cell capacity matter most. Jio’s TRAI results are favorable in Bengaluru, Delhi and Kerala, but verify evening performance where you live.
- Video meetings and live broadcasts: upload speed, latency and consistency matter more than a peak download test. Airtel’s Opensignal upload award is relevant, yet your local uplink can differ.
- Cloud photo or video backup: compare upload completion time at the same hour on both SIMs.
- Gaming: a lower and steadier latency path is more important than a very high download peak. The cited releases do not establish a universal latency winner, so measure your own games or services.
Coverage: map predictions versus usable signal
Both operators’ maps are predictive. Jio says its map estimates expected 4G and 5G availability using Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) and was updated on 10 July 2026. Airtel’s map states that it uses an RSRP threshold of -110 for 4G/5G and -95 for 2G in line with TRAI guidelines. A shaded area therefore indicates modeled availability, not a guarantee that a phone will hold 5G in every room.
Check the locations that determine your bill
- Open each operator’s official coverage map and search your complete home address, not only the neighborhood or PIN code.
- Check your workplace, school, regular shopping area and the roads or rail routes you use. A network that wins at home may lose on your commute.
- Look for the map’s distinction between outdoor and indoor or predicted signal categories, if shown.
- Ask people using each network in the same building. Building materials, floor level and window orientation can create large differences within one map polygon.
- Repeat the check after entering your handset model. Supported 5G bands and carrier configuration can affect whether a mapped signal is usable.
Do not infer coverage from a friend’s phone in another room. The decisive test is the signal and data session on your own handset at the times you need it.
Which network is more reliable?
Reliability has at least two meanings: whether apps can consistently exchange data and whether calls connect and stay connected. The leading operator changes with the measure.

Application-level reliability
In Opensignal’s India Mobile Network Experience Report for June 2025, Jio won the Reliability Experience award with 860 points on a 100–1000 scale, a 27-point lead over second-placed Airtel. This score reflects users’ ability to connect and successfully use common services; it is not a guarantee of call quality at one address.

| Delhi, TRAI 2026 | 100.00% | 98.36% | Airtel |
| Kerala, TRAI 2025 | 100.00% | 100.00% | Tie |
The Delhi result demonstrates why a national reliability label cannot settle a local voice decision. If missed calls and call setup are your main concern, test from the rooms and routes where calls usually fail. If app sessions, payments or navigation are the problem, use repeated data tests rather than judging only by voice bars.
Plans, 5G eligibility and real value
Plan value cannot be calculated from a universal price table because Airtel and Jio change prices, data allowances, validity, bundled services and unlimited-5G conditions. Terms can also vary by telecom circle. TRAI’s tariff portal lists current filings for Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio and is the authoritative starting point; confirm the final terms in the operator’s purchase or recharge screen before paying.

Compare these fields side by side
| Field | Question to answer before recharging |
|---|---|
| Total price | What is the full amount charged, including any taxes shown at checkout? |
| Validity | How many calendar days does the plan last, and when does validity begin? |
| Base data | How many gigabytes are included per day or for the full validity period? |
| 5G condition | Is 5G access included automatically, restricted to eligible plans, or subject to a separate offer? |
| Unlimited-5G wording | Does “unlimited” have a fair-use, speed-management or device-compatibility condition? |
| Voice and SMS | Are calls and messages unlimited, and are there circle or roaming exclusions? |
| Bundled services | Which entertainment, cloud or other benefits are included, and for how long? |
| Overage behavior | What happens after the data allowance is exhausted: reduced speed, add-on charge or no data? |
Calculate cost per valid day and cost per included gigabyte only after recording those terms. A cheaper recharge with shorter validity can cost more over a year. Conversely, paying for an “unlimited” 5G tier is wasteful if your phone, location or plan eligibility keeps you on 4G.
A practical plan-selection sequence
- Write down your average monthly data use from your phone’s usage screen for at least one representative month.
- Separate predictable use, such as video streaming, from occasional spikes such as travel or software updates.
- Check whether your handset supports the operator’s 5G bands and whether the specific plan grants 5G access.
- Compare the same validity period on both live tariff pages. Record price, daily or total data, voice, SMS, rollover rules and bundled benefits.
- Price any required data add-ons. A lower headline plan may lose its advantage once add-ons are included.
- Recheck the terms immediately before payment because promotional validity and unlimited-5G conditions can change.
Choose Jio or Airtel by use case
Choose Jio first when
- Jio’s map shows stronger predicted service at your home, workplace and main routes.
- Your priority is high-volume downloading and Jio wins your own repeated tests, consistent with the TRAI download results in Bengaluru, Delhi and Kerala.
- Application continuity matters and your local experience aligns with Jio’s 860-point Opensignal Reliability Experience award.
- The current Jio plan supplies the data and 5G eligibility you need at a lower total cost for your usage pattern.
Choose Airtel first when
- Airtel provides better indoor or route coverage where you actually spend time.
- You upload large files, make frequent video calls or livestream and Airtel is faster in your local tests, supported directionally by Opensignal’s 22.6 Mbps 5G Upload Speed award.
- Voice setup is more dependable on your routes; TRAI’s Delhi result favored Airtel and Bengaluru favored Jio.
- Airtel’s current plan has better validity, add-on terms or bundled services for your budget.
Use dual-SIM testing when the decision is close
If both maps look similar, keep the existing SIM active and add the other network temporarily if your handset supports dual SIM. Test data and calls before porting. This avoids making a national award stand in for an indoor signal that only your building can reveal.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to run a fair local comparison
- Use the same 5G-capable handset, with both SIMs provisioned for 5G and updated to current carrier settings.
- Test at home, work and one outdoor location; include the room where you normally use the phone.
- Run tests in the morning, during the evening busy period and late at night. Record download, upload, latency and whether the phone fell back to 4G.
- Repeat each measurement at least three times and compare the median, not the single highest result.
- Make a short voice call and a video call on each network. Note call setup time, audio breaks and whether data resumes after the call.
- Try the apps you actually depend on, such as payments, maps, cloud storage and your work VPN.
- Record battery drain and heating subjectively, since a phone working hard to hold a weak signal can be inconvenient even when a speed test is acceptable.
Keep the test conditions identical: same place, time window, handset settings and server where the app allows it. A result from one operator at 10 a.m. is not comparable with the other at 8 p.m.

Handset, signal and congestion factors
Network branding is only one part of performance. A handset that lacks the relevant 5G bands, has an outdated carrier profile or is restricted to a particular preferred network mode may not reproduce the map or a neighbor’s result. Check the phone manufacturer’s supported bands and the operator’s compatibility information before concluding that coverage is poor.
Indoor walls, lifts, basements and coated glass weaken radio signals. Moving a few metres toward a window can change the result, but that does not solve a problem if your normal workspace is underground. Congestion also varies by hour: a tower can deliver an excellent morning speed and a much lower evening speed without any change to your plan.
When a phone repeatedly switches between 5G and 4G, a stable 4G connection may feel more reliable than an intermittent 5G signal. Judge the service by completed tasks—calls connected, files uploaded and pages loaded—not by the 5G icon alone.
What to do if 5G is poor after switching
- Confirm eligibility: check that the recharge, account and handset qualify for the operator’s 5G service.
- Refresh registration: toggle airplane mode, restart the phone and install pending carrier or system updates.
- Check preferred network mode: ensure 5G is enabled, but test automatic 4G/5G mode if 5G is unstable.
- Move to a known coverage point: compare an outdoor test with the problem room to separate building loss from wider network issues.
- Repeat at another time: if performance collapses only during busy hours, congestion is a likely explanation.
- Document failures: save dates, locations, screenshots and call details before contacting support.
- Escalate or reverse the decision: use the operator’s complaint process, and do not port your primary number until the replacement SIM has passed your local tests.
Bottom line: test locally, then buy the plan that fits
Jio has the stronger download case in the cited TRAI Bengaluru, Delhi and Kerala measurements, while Airtel has the stronger national upload evidence and won Opensignal’s October 2024 5G Download Speed award. Jio leads Opensignal’s June 2025 Reliability Experience result, but TRAI call setup leaders differ between Bengaluru and Delhi. Coverage maps are predictive and plan terms are changeable.
For a financially sound choice, test both SIMs at home, work and on your regular routes; compare repeated download and upload results plus voice and app behavior; then select the current plan whose validity, data allowance and 5G conditions match your actual use. That process is more reliable than choosing solely by a national speed ranking.
