At Walmart’s listed $98 annual price, a full 10¢-per-gallon discount requires 980 eligible gallons a year to break even. If your available discount is 5¢ per gallon, the threshold rises to 1,960 gallons.
Those calculations show the maximum value of the advertised discount, not a guarantee that the pump price is lowest. Third-party fuel providers set their own public prices, eligibility varies by station and state, and Sam’s Club gives Walmart+ members its member price rather than stacking another Walmart+ discount. Check your local prices and your actual annual fuel volume before joining.

Start with the break-even calculation
The basic test is:
annual membership fee ÷ discount per gallon = gallons needed to break even
Walmart’s current membership page lists the annual Walmart+ price as $98. The company’s fuel-benefit page lists savings of up to 10¢ per gallon at participating stations, while stating that Alabama savings range from 5¢ to 10¢. Using those published figures produces these thresholds:

At 10¢ off, buying 600 eligible gallons in a year would save $60, leaving you $38 short of the annual fee. At 1,000 gallons, the fuel discount would total $100, or about $2 more than the fee before considering any other Walmart+ benefit. At 5¢ off, even 1,500 gallons produces only $75 in savings.
The $98 figure is the listed annual price on Walmart’s membership page; promotions or a different billing option can change what you personally pay. The calculation should therefore use the price shown at enrollment, not an assumed future price.
Where the fuel discount applies
Walmart says the fuel benefit is available at participating Walmart, CITGO, Exxon, Mobil and Murphy stations. The company’s help page is the controlling place to check current participation and redemption instructions: Walmart+ Gas Savings Benefit.
- The discount is not automatically available at every station carrying one of those brands.
- The amount can vary by location and may be affected by state law.
- The Walmart app is required to use the benefit.
- Payment and authentication steps differ by fuel provider, so follow the instructions shown for that station.
Walmart’s terms also state that third-party providers set their own public fuel prices and that savings can vary by location: Walmart+ Terms of Use. A 10¢ membership discount is applied to the station’s price; it does not force that station to match a cheaper competitor nearby.

CITGO has explicit usage limits
For CITGO, Walmart requires you to create or link a Club CITGO account and use the associated phone number as the alternate ID (Alt ID). Walmart says the discount applies to up to 30 gallons per transaction and four fuel transactions per week. A driver who routinely exceeds those limits cannot count every gallon toward the break-even calculation.
Other listed stations have different procedures
Walmart’s help page says it lists no gallon limit for the other participating stations. That wording means no limit is stated on that page; it is not a promise that every location or payment method will accept unlimited discounted gallons. Exxon and Mobil use linked-payment and station-specific procedures described in Walmart’s benefit guidance, so verify the process before relying on a particular pump.
Sam’s Club is a separate price comparison
At Sam’s Club, Walmart+ members receive the Sam’s Club member fuel price. Walmart says the 10¢ Walmart+ discount is not added on top. The value depends on the member price at your local club, whether you can conveniently use that club and any membership eligibility requirements that apply. Compare the final Sam’s Club price with nearby stations rather than treating it as a fixed additional discount.

The relevant question is not “How many cents does Walmart+ advertise?” It is “What would I pay at this eligible pump compared with the best practical alternative?” A station charging 18¢ more per gallon than a nearby competitor remains more expensive after a 10¢ discount.

- List the stations you normally use and confirm which ones participate in Walmart+.
- Record each station’s posted price for the grade of fuel you buy. Prices can change, so compare them on the same day.
- Check the price at nearby nonparticipating stations, warehouse clubs or other routes you already drive.
- Subtract the Walmart+ discount from the eligible station’s posted price.
- Use the resulting per-gallon difference, not the advertised discount by itself, in your annual estimate.
Convenience has a monetary value too. A station on your commute may be a better choice than a cheaper outlet that requires a special trip, but include any extra distance, time or tolls in your comparison. Conversely, if the participating station is out of your way, the nominal discount can disappear in added driving costs.
What Walmart’s savings figures do—and do not—prove
Walmart reports substantial savings for some members, but those figures are not a personalized fuel guarantee.

Because the $109 figure is an average for members using the benefit weekly, occasional drivers should not assume they will save that amount. The $382 figure includes benefits beyond fuel and excludes the membership fee, so it cannot be used as a gas-only break-even number.
Calculate your own annual fuel value
Use your actual gallons and the discount available at your usual stations. If you do not know your annual gallons, add the gallons from recent receipts or estimate them from your vehicle’s fuel economy and annual miles.

- Estimate eligible gallons. Count only fuel bought at participating stations where you can redeem the benefit. For CITGO, account for the 30-gallon transaction cap and four-transaction weekly cap.
- Confirm the discount. Use the amount shown for your location. Do not substitute the maximum 10¢ if your station offers less, including Alabama locations where Walmart states the range is 5–10¢.
- Compute gross fuel savings. Multiply eligible gallons by the actual cents-off amount. For example, 800 gallons at 10¢ saves $80; 800 gallons at 5¢ saves $40.
- Subtract the membership fee. At the listed $98 annual price, the 800-gallon examples leave net fuel values of negative $18 and negative $58, respectively.
- Add only benefits you will really use. Grocery delivery, shipping, streaming or other Walmart+ features should be valued from your own usage, not from the company’s average.
A spreadsheet makes the decision easier. Create columns for station, regular posted price, Walmart+ price after discount, gallons purchased and annualized savings. Update the prices when your route or local market changes.

You buy close to 1,000 gallons a year at a full 10¢ discount
This is the clearest fuel-only break-even case. If your purchases are eligible, the station is not materially more expensive than alternatives and you can redeem the discount consistently, the savings can cover the listed annual fee.
You buy less fuel but use other Walmart+ benefits
A driver below the fuel threshold may still come out ahead if the membership replaces delivery fees, shipping charges or other purchases the household would make anyway. Keep those values separate from fuel so you know which benefit is carrying the decision.

Your regular route passes several eligible stations
Convenient access reduces the risk that you will forget to redeem the benefit or spend extra time and fuel reaching a participating pump. A broad network helps, but the station-level price check remains essential.

When the membership is probably not worth it for gas alone
- You drive substantially less than 980 eligible gallons annually and do not expect to use other benefits.
- Your usual locations offer only a 5¢ discount, making the fuel-only threshold 1,960 gallons.
- Participating stations near you post prices above nearby alternatives by more than the discount.
- You buy more than the CITGO transaction or weekly limits allow and cannot use another participating provider conveniently.
- You would need a special trip to redeem the discount, wiping out the savings through distance, time or tolls.
- Your local Sam’s Club price is not lower than the alternatives you already use; Walmart+ does not add another per-gallon reduction there.
A practical one-month verification test
Before committing to a year, observe your real driving pattern. Check the Walmart app for participating locations and redemption requirements, then record the posted price at the stations you would actually use over several fill-ups. Compare those prices with the alternatives on the same days and note your gallons. Annualize the result:
(eligible gallons during the test ÷ test days) × 365 × actual savings per gallon
This is an estimate, not a guarantee, because fuel prices and your driving vary. It is still more relevant than a national average or a company-wide membership statistic.

Walmart’s membership page currently lists $98 for an annual membership. Promotions can differ, and the terms and participating locations can change. Review the current membership offer and fuel-benefit instructions at checkout. The terms explain that provider pricing, location availability and applicable law affect the benefit.
Walmart Corporate said in its September 14, 2026 announcement that the network expanded to more than 17,000 stations after CITGO joined. That expansion improves potential access but does not change the break-even arithmetic for your household. Walmart’s Senior Vice President and GM, Walmart+, Deepak Maini, described the budgeting test this way: “A membership has to earn its place in a household budget.” Treat that as Walmart’s statement of principle, then apply your own gallons, prices and usage.
Decision checklist
- What annual price would you pay at enrollment?
- How many gallons do you actually buy in a year?
- Which of those gallons are at participating stations?
- What discount does your usual station provide: 10¢, 5¢ or another amount shown for that location?
- Does the station’s discounted final price beat nearby alternatives?
- Do CITGO limits affect your purchase pattern?
- Is a Sam’s Club member price available and competitive on your routes?
- What non-fuel Walmart+ benefits will you use enough to value?
If your fuel-only savings exceed the fee after local price differences and usage limits, Walmart+ can be justified on gas. If not, join only when your realistic value from other benefits closes the gap; the advertised per-gallon discount by itself is not enough.
