Is TSMC Stock a Good Long-Term Investment? A Framework for TSM (2026)

TSMC can be a strong long-term business, but that does not automatically make its stock a good buy at every price. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has reported rapid growth, very high margins and a large share of revenue from advanced manufacturing. Its 2-nanometer process entered high-volume production in late 2025, and management says artificial-intelligence demand is supporting further growth.

The unresolved part is valuation. The available company filings do not establish a verified current share price or peer multiple, so they cannot support a price-specific buy or sell call. A sensible decision connects TSMC’s operating advantages with its heavy investment requirements, execution record, geopolitical exposure and the price you would pay for future earnings.

What TSMC does and what you are buying

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) operates as a semiconductor foundry. It manufactures chips designed by other companies rather than selling a broad portfolio of its own branded processors. Its annual report describes a wide process-technology and manufacturing footprint, with leading-edge logic, specialty technologies and advanced packaging among its capabilities. TSMC reported that its 2-nanometer technology entered high-volume manufacturing in the fourth quarter of 2025. TSMC’s 2025 Annual Report

Investors can access the company through the New York Stock Exchange American depositary receipt, ticker TSM, or the Taiwan-listed shares, ticker 2330. TSMC’s quarterly release reports earnings per share in New Taiwan dollars and the U.S.-dollar equivalent per ADR unit. Your return therefore depends not only on business performance, but also on the listing you use, currency movements, brokerage costs, taxes and any ADR-related charges. The reviewed company materials do not compare those items or declare one listing superior to the other. Q2 2026 earnings release

The investment case rests on TSMC remaining a critical manufacturing partner as chip designers move to more complex nodes and packaging. The risk is that the same leadership requires enormous, continuing capital commitments and flawless execution across several countries and technology generations.

What the latest reported numbers show

TSMC’s recent results demonstrate a powerful operating business, although they do not guarantee future shareholder returns. The following figures are reported by TSMC for the stated period.

Measure Reported result How to interpret it
Fiscal 2025 revenue US$122.42 billion Full-year consolidated revenue reported in the 2025 annual report.
Fiscal 2025 net income US$55.21 billion Full-year consolidated net income reported by TSMC.
2025 revenue growth 35.9% in U.S.-dollar terms Historical growth for that fiscal year, not a forecast.
Q2 2026 revenue US$40.20 billion, up 33.7% year over year Quarter ended June 30, 2026; this is not an annual growth rate.
Q2 2026 gross margin 67.7% Quarterly gross margin.
Q2 2026 operating margin 60.3% Quarterly operating margin.
Q2 2026 net profit margin 55.6% Quarterly net profit margin.
Advanced-technology share 77% of Q2 2026 wafer revenue TSMC defines advanced technologies here as 7-nanometer and more advanced.

Within Q2 2026 wafer revenue, TSMC reported 2-nanometer at 3%, 3-nanometer at 30%, 5-nanometer at 33% and 7-nanometer at 11%. These percentages show that the newest process is beginning to contribute while established leading-edge nodes still account for most advanced-node revenue. They should not be read as a claim that 2-nanometer already dominates the business. TSMC’s Q2 2026 release

Why investors are optimistic about long-term growth

AI and high-performance computing demand

TSMC identifies robust artificial-intelligence-related demand as a major contributor to its outlook. AI accelerators, networking components and other high-performance-computing chips generally require advanced process technology and sophisticated packaging. That creates an opportunity for a foundry that can deliver high yields and large volumes.

However, “AI demand” is a management-described driver, not an independently verified guarantee of a fixed growth rate. Investors should check whether demand appears in reported wafer revenue, utilization, customer concentration and cash generation rather than relying on industry excitement alone.

Leading-edge process migration

TSMC’s Q2 release said the quarter benefited from strong demand for leading-edge processes and an expected steep ramp of 2-nanometer production. Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang stated: “Moving into third quarter 2026, we expect our business to be supported by continued strong demand for our leading-edge process technologies, including the steep ramp-up of our 2-nanometer technology.” This is management guidance issued with the July 2026 earnings release, not an independent forecast. A successful node transition can support pricing, customer demand and longer periods of technology leadership. The practical test is whether each new node reaches volume with acceptable yields, attracts enough orders and earns returns that justify the equipment and facility spending.

Management’s near-term guidance

For Q3 2026, TSMC guided to revenue of US$44.6 billion to US$45.8 billion, a gross margin of 65% to 67% and an operating margin of 56% to 58%, using the exchange-rate assumption stated in the release. These are forward-looking company estimates issued in July 2026. They are useful for testing expectations, but an investor should replace them with actual results when the quarter is reported.

The capital-spending trade-off

Advanced semiconductor manufacturing is not an asset-light software business. New fabs, clean rooms, lithography equipment, process tools and advanced-packaging capacity require large upfront payments before revenue arrives. TSMC’s Q4 2025 earnings-call transcript said spending over the next three years was expected to be significantly higher than the US$101 billion spent over the previous three years. Management also emphasized customer capacity planning, utilization discipline and return targets. Q4 2025 earnings-call transcript

Heavy investment can expand future capacity and preserve technology leadership, but it creates several questions for a long-term shareholder:

  • Are customer commitments strong enough to keep new capacity well utilized?
  • Do new nodes generate returns above the cost of the equipment and facilities?
  • Can depreciation rise without permanently compressing margins?
  • Will construction, labor, energy and supply-chain costs remain manageable?
  • Can TSMC fund expansion while maintaining dividends, buybacks or a resilient balance sheet?

TSMC’s annual report also describes a further U.S. investment plan announced in March 2025 and continued investment in leading-edge and advanced-packaging facilities in Taiwan. The report does not establish that every planned facility will meet its intended cost, yield, schedule or return. Treat geographic expansion as an execution program to monitor, not as guaranteed capacity or profit. 2025 Annual Report

Risks that could undermine the thesis

Geopolitical and trade-policy exposure

TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F lists local and global economic conditions, geopolitical tensions and trade-policy developments among factors that could cause actual results to differ materially. Such events could affect operations, customer demand, costs, supply chains and investment plans. The filing does not assign a probability or financial impact to a particular future event, so investors should not convert the disclosure into a prediction of a specific conflict or policy outcome. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F

For portfolio planning, ask how much exposure you are comfortable having to one company whose manufacturing base and strategic importance are closely tied to Taiwan, while also expanding internationally. Diversification cannot remove this risk, but it can prevent one event from determining your entire portfolio result.

Dependence on advanced-node demand

The current growth narrative assumes sustained demand for leading-edge chips, including AI-related products. A slowdown in end markets, customer inventory correction or a shift in computing architecture could reduce orders or delay capacity ramps. The risk is analytical rather than quantified in the cited filings: no probability is established.

Technology and manufacturing execution

Each node transition involves design enablement, equipment availability, process learning, yields and customer qualification. A delayed or lower-yield ramp could increase costs, defer revenue and weaken margins. Track actual 2-nanometer wafer revenue, utilization, gross margin and capital spending over several quarters instead of judging the program from a single announcement.

Economic and currency effects

TSMC sells into a global technology market and reports some investor-facing figures in U.S. dollars while its statutory earnings per share is presented in New Taiwan dollars. Exchange-rate movements can change the dollar value of reported results and ADR returns. Broader economic weakness can also reduce semiconductor demand or make financing and construction more expensive.

Stock quality versus stock valuation

A high-quality company can still be a poor investment if its shares already discount years of exceptional growth. Conversely, a cyclical downturn can create an attractive entry point for a company whose long-term economics remain intact. TSMC’s reported revenue, margins and node mix address business quality; they do not establish whether TSM is cheap or expensive today.

Before buying, gather a current price and calculate valuation measures using a consistent currency and share basis. At minimum, examine:

  • Forward and trailing price-to-earnings ratios: compare both with normalized earnings, not just the latest unusually strong quarter.
  • Price-to-free-cash-flow: adjust your expectations for the cash consumed by the current fab and packaging build-out.
  • Enterprise value measures: consider cash, debt and lease obligations rather than focusing only on market capitalization.
  • Growth-adjusted valuation: test what growth rate is required to justify the multiple and how sensitive the result is to lower margins.
  • Return on invested capital: monitor whether returns remain attractive as the investment base expands.
  • Peer comparison: compare with relevant semiconductor manufacturers using the same reporting period, accounting definitions and currency.

No verified current share price or peer valuation multiple is established in the company materials cited here. Therefore, a definitive statement that TSM is a buy, sell or bargain at the present market price would go beyond the evidence.

A practical process for deciding whether TSM fits your portfolio

  1. Confirm the listing and currency. Decide whether you would own the NYSE ADR (TSM) or Taiwan-listed shares (2330), then check your broker’s fees, tax treatment, foreign-exchange conversion and ADR charges.
  2. Read the latest results. Separate full-year figures from quarterly figures. Record revenue growth, gross margin, operating margin, net margin and advanced-node revenue share.
  3. Track the 2-nanometer ramp. Look for reported production contribution, customer demand, yields, utilization and margin behavior over multiple quarters.
  4. Reconcile growth with spending. Compare capital expenditure, depreciation, operating cash flow and free cash flow. Ask whether expansion is producing returns rather than assuming that more capacity automatically means more profit.
  5. Stress-test the thesis. Model slower AI demand, a delayed node ramp, lower utilization, margin compression, adverse currency movement and a period of geopolitical or trade disruption.
  6. Set a valuation discipline. Use a price target or maximum entry multiple based on normalized earnings and conservative growth assumptions. If the market price exceeds that level, waiting can be rational even when the company is excellent.
  7. Size the position for uncertainty. Keep single-company and Taiwan-related exposure consistent with your risk capacity, time horizon and need for liquidity.
  8. Define review triggers. Reassess after material changes in node execution, capital plans, customer demand, policy exposure, balance-sheet strength or valuation—not merely after daily price moves.

Who may find TSMC suitable—and who may not

Potentially suitable for

  • Investors with a multi-year horizon who can tolerate semiconductor cycles.
  • Portfolios seeking exposure to advanced-chip manufacturing rather than a single chip-design company.
  • Investors willing to monitor capital spending, process transitions and geopolitical risk.
  • Buyers who can justify the entry price using normalized earnings and cash-flow assumptions.

Potentially unsuitable for

  • Investors who need predictable near-term income or cannot tolerate large drawdowns.
  • Portfolios already heavily exposed to Taiwan, semiconductor stocks or AI-linked companies.
  • Anyone making the decision solely from one quarter’s 33.7% revenue growth or 67.7% gross margin.
  • Investors unwilling to account for currency, ADR, tax and cross-border trading considerations.

Bottom line: is TSMC stock a good long-term investment?

TSMC has a credible long-term operating case: fiscal 2025 revenue was US$122.42 billion, net income was US$55.21 billion, Q2 2026 margins were exceptionally high, and 7-nanometer-and-more-advanced technologies represented 77% of quarterly wafer revenue. Its 2-nanometer ramp and AI-related demand could support further growth.

The investment case remains conditional. TSMC must convert heavy capital spending into profitable capacity, execute new-node ramps, manage global expansion and navigate the geopolitical, economic and trade-policy risks disclosed in its filings. Because a verified current price and peer valuation are not established here, the evidence supports “potentially attractive at a reasonable valuation,” not an unconditional buy recommendation. Use the company results to judge quality, then use current market data and conservative assumptions to judge price.
