Generally, the IRS app is designed to protect sensitive tax information, but “safe” is not the same as risk-free. The Internal Revenue Service says its newly renamed app uses the secure sign-in process for an IRS Individual Online Account, encrypts information sent to IRS systems, and does not retain signed-in tax-account information as permanent app data. A temporary session credential stays in protected device storage while you are signed in and is cleared when you sign out.
Those are the IRS’s published design and data-handling statements, not an independent security certification. Your account can still be exposed by a fake app, phishing message, unlocked or outdated phone, unsafe sign-in, or a compromised device. The safest approach is to install the real app through IRS.gov/app, verify the publisher, review permissions for your exact version, and sign out when finished.

What the IRS app is—and what it is not
The IRS app launched on September 25, 2026, as the successor to IRS2Go. Existing IRS2Go users may receive the renamed app through their normal store update process when automatic updates are enabled; otherwise, they can update it manually through the Apple App Store or Google Play. The app is free and available in English and Spanish.

Services available without signing in
Some lower-sensitivity tasks work without account authentication. These include checking refund status, making certain payments, and finding free filing help. Availability can depend on the particular service and the circumstances of your request.
Services that can require sign-in
After you authenticate, the app can provide selected account information and actions, including:
- Refund and amended-return status
- Available balance information
- Payments and payment activity
- Selected IRS notices and letters
- Available tax records and transcripts
- Certain profile and communication preferences
- An identity protection personal identification number (IP PIN)
The list is selective rather than a promise that every account will display every item. Account status, feature availability, and IRS eligibility rules can affect what you see.
Why the IRS describes the app as secure
The IRS says the app uses the same secure sign-in process used for an IRS Individual Online Account. Authentication opens in a secure browser window, then returns you to the app after sign-in. According to the IRS, credentials are entered through that secure sign-in process rather than directly into ordinary app screens.
The IRS also says information sent between the app and IRS systems is encrypted. It says links presented in the app are limited to approved IRS and partner websites. Encryption protects data while it is moving between the device and IRS systems; it does not protect a device that is already controlled by someone else, nor does it prove that every message claiming to be from the IRS is genuine.

Does the IRS app store my tax information on my phone?
The IRS says tax-account information displayed after sign-in is not kept as permanent local app data. While you are signed in, a temporary session credential is held in protected device storage. The IRS says that credential is cleared when you sign out.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe app session can remain active for up to 60 minutes while you use the app, according to the 2026 IRS FAQ. When the session expires, you must sign in again. On a shared or borrowed phone, use the app’s sign-out control as soon as you finish rather than relying on the timeout.
This statement concerns the app’s handling of account data and its session credential. It is not a promise that a phone cannot retain other traces, such as screenshots or information captured by malicious software. Avoid saving or sharing screenshots of tax records, and keep the device itself protected.
What permissions does the IRS app need?
There is no single, permanent permissions list in the IRS FAQ. The IRS says the app requests only permissions needed for features available in the version installed on your device, and directs users to the current Apple App Store or Google Play listing, or to IRS.gov/app, for the applicable details.

That means the permission prompt on your phone is more authoritative for your installation than an old article or a list copied from another operating system. Review each request in context, grant it only when the related feature needs it, and revisit your phone’s settings if you later stop using that feature.
Historical IRS2Go permissions are not a current app inventory
A Google Play listing for the former IRS2Go app, last updated August 24, 2026, described location access for finding nearby Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly sites, phone access for calling the IRS or those sites, and photos, media, and files access for storing map images and data. That information is historical context for IRS2Go. It does not establish that the renamed IRS app requests those permissions, or that every device receives the same prompts.
Do not treat an old IRS2Go permission list as evidence that the current app requires location, phone, or storage access. Check the live listing and the permission dialog for the exact app version and operating system you are using.
What the current iPhone privacy label says
The Apple App Store listing inspected for IRS App version 2026.9.30 reports that the developer, the Internal Revenue Service, may collect a user ID and link it to identity for app functionality. The same listing reports that usage data, described as product interaction, and diagnostic data about crashes and performance may be collected without being linked to identity for analytics and app functionality.
Apple states that the developer’s privacy information has not been verified by Apple. The disclosure is specific to that iOS listing and can change as the app or its data practices change. It is therefore a useful statement of what the developer reported for that listing, not a complete cross-platform data inventory or an independent audit.

How to make sure you downloaded the real IRS app
- Start independently. Type IRS.gov/app into your browser or navigate to IRS.gov yourself. Follow the verified store links from there instead of clicking an app advertisement, text message, email, or social-media link.
- Check the publisher. The store page should identify the publisher as the Internal Revenue Service. A similar name, copied logo, unusual spelling, or different publisher is a reason to stop.
- Compare the listing details. Confirm that the listing describes the IRS app rather than an unrelated tax calculator, refund service, or former third-party tool. Look at the current version, language availability, privacy disclosure, and permissions.
- Install only through the official store. Do not sideload an installation file or use a link supplied by an unsolicited message.
- Open sign-in cautiously. When authentication launches a secure browser window, check the address and continue only through the IRS sign-in flow. Never enter credentials into a page reached from a suspicious message.
Account and phone practices that matter as much as the app
An app with encrypted connections cannot compensate for a compromised account or an unlocked phone. Use these controls as practical security measures; they are not claims that the IRS has inspected or configured your particular device.
- Keep the phone’s operating system and the IRS app updated from the official store.
- Use a strong device screen lock and do not share the unlock code.
- Sign out after using the app, especially on a family, work, library, or other shared device.
- Install apps only from trusted stores and remove software you no longer need.
- Do not provide tax identification, banking, password, or payment details in response to an unsolicited text, email, phone call, or pop-up.
- If a message seems suspicious, do not click its link. Navigate independently to IRS.gov and use the agency’s help and scam-reporting resources.
The IRS says it will not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited messages. A message that pressures you to “verify” a refund, pay immediately, or install an app is a phishing warning sign even if it uses IRS branding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use the app or IRS.gov?
Choose based on the task and the environment, not on a blanket claim that one channel is always safer.
| Situation | More suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Checking a refund without viewing broader account details | App without signing in | Refund-status checking is available without account authentication. |
| Reviewing balances, notices, transcripts, or payment activity | App with secure sign-in or the web account | These services expose account information and require authentication when available. |
| Using a shared or borrowed phone | Prefer a trusted personal device or the web on a trusted computer | Sign-out discipline and device control are harder on shared hardware. |
| Needing a feature not shown in the app | IRS.gov or the full online account | The mobile app is not a complete substitute for IRS.gov or every web-account function. |
On a personal, updated phone with a screen lock, the app can be a convenient way to use the selected services. If you do not trust the device or network, avoid signing in there and use a device and connection you control.
What happens when a session expires?
The IRS says an active app session can last up to 60 minutes. After expiration, the app requires another sign-in. This behavior limits how long a previously authenticated session remains usable, but it does not replace the need to sign out manually. Close the session yourself when finished, particularly before handing the phone to someone else.

If the app asks you to sign in again during ordinary use, treat that as a normal session-expiration or reauthentication event only when it appears in the expected IRS sign-in flow. A link in an unexpected text or email that asks you to “renew” your session should be treated as suspicious.
What the published evidence does not establish
No independent security test result, breach rate, safety score, or number of protected users was identified for the app. The IRS’s mobile-environment guidance discusses safeguards such as device encryption, authentication, and controls for lost or stolen devices, but that document applies to agencies and mobile environments handling federal tax information. It is general context, not an app-specific evaluation or certification.
Likewise, the Apple privacy label is a developer disclosure that Apple says it has not verified, and the former IRS2Go Android permissions are not proof of the current app’s permissions. A careful conclusion therefore separates documented design claims from unknowns: the IRS describes encryption, secure authentication, protected temporary session storage, and deletion of that credential at sign-out; the public material does not prove that every device, account, network, or future app version will be secure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bottom line: is the IRS app safe to use?
The IRS app is reasonably suitable for tax tasks when you obtain it from the official store, verify that the Internal Revenue Service is the publisher, use the IRS secure sign-in flow, and protect the phone and account. The IRS’s published safeguards support calling it designed for secure handling of sensitive information. They do not justify calling it completely safe or risk-free. Treat permissions as version-specific, sign out after use, keep the device updated and locked, and handle unsolicited IRS messages as potential scams.
