Is Scottish Mortgage a good investment for beginners? Risks, costs and alternatives

Scottish Mortgage can be suitable for a beginner only if that investor accepts high volatility, possible losses, and a holding period of at least five years. It is a concentrated, actively managed investment trust that owns global public and private growth companies and can borrow to invest. Those features may support long-term growth, but they make it more complex than a broad, unleveraged index fund. The trust’s own target-market material says it may not suit investors who need regular income, dislike short-term price swings, or have a shorter horizon. This is a general assessment, not a personal recommendation.

What Scottish Mortgage is

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust is a listed, closed-ended company. Instead of buying and redeeming units directly with a fund provider, investors buy and sell the trust’s shares on a stock exchange. The company owns a portfolio of investments, and the value of those investments is its net asset value (NAV).

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The share price is set by buyers and sellers in the market. It can therefore be higher or lower than NAV. A price below NAV is called a discount; a price above NAV is a premium. This creates an extra source of return or loss that does not arise in exactly the same way when buying an open-ended index fund at its underlying value. A premium can disappear, and a discount can widen, even when the portfolio itself has not moved by the same amount.

The trust seeks long-term total returns rather than a predictable income stream. Its performance page describes the intended horizon as “typically five years or more.” Total return includes changes in the share price and any distributions, rather than a promise of regular cash payments.

Active, global and growth-focused

The portfolio is built around high-conviction investments in growth companies around the world. The manager can invest in both listed businesses and privately held companies. This differs from an index tracker, which normally follows a published market index and spreads exposure across a much larger set of securities.

Why the closed-ended structure matters

Because the trust’s shares trade in the market, investors must consider two values: the underlying NAV and the price they pay for a share. A beginner who looks only at the portfolio’s reported performance can miss the effect of a changing premium or discount. The market price is the amount that determines the investor’s immediate gain or loss.

Who might find it suitable—and who may not

There is no universal “beginner investment.” Experience with investing matters less than whether the investor’s objectives, time horizon and tolerance for losses match the trust’s characteristics.

A beginner who may be able to use it

  • Has an investment horizon of at least five years and preferably longer.
  • Can leave the money invested through substantial market declines.
  • Seeks long-term capital growth rather than dependable income.
  • Understands that a concentrated global growth portfolio can lag a broad market for extended periods.
  • Is comfortable checking the trust’s gearing, private-asset exposure, valuation and discount or premium before buying.

A beginner for whom it may be unsuitable

  • Needs the money within five years, or cannot rule out a near-term withdrawal.
  • Needs regular income to meet living costs.
  • Would sell after a sharp fall because volatility is uncomfortable.
  • Expects capital protection or a stable account balance.
  • Wants a simple, broadly diversified core holding with no borrowing and only publicly traded assets.

The trust’s target-market description specifically warns that it may not suit investors with short horizons, a need for regular income or low tolerance for short-term volatility. There is no capital protection.

The main risks beginners need to understand

Growth-stock and market risk

Growth companies are valued partly on profits expected in the future. When interest rates, economic expectations or investor preferences change, those valuations can move quickly. A business can continue to grow while its share price falls because the market has reduced the multiple it is willing to pay. A high-conviction portfolio can therefore experience larger swings than a broad market portfolio.

Scottish Mortgage invests globally, including in emerging markets. The trust’s risk disclosures identify political and regulatory changes, weaker liquidity, settlement difficulties and the possibility of market closures in those markets. These risks can make it harder to trade or value an investment at the desired time and price.

Gearing: borrowing that magnifies results

“Gearing” means the trust borrows money and uses the proceeds to make additional investments. If those investments rise by more than the cost of borrowing, gearing can increase returns for shareholders. If they fall, the losses are magnified because the debt still has to be serviced and repaid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Borrowing costs also affect results. Even when the portfolio is unchanged, interest and related financing expenses reduce what remains for shareholders. Gearing can change over time, so a beginner should read the latest reports rather than rely on a historical percentage.

Private-company exposure

Private businesses do not have a continuously quoted market price. Their valuations are based on funding rounds, comparable companies, financial information and other valuation methods. A reported valuation may not equal the price achievable in a sale, particularly when markets are stressed.

Private holdings can also take longer to sell. If the trust needs cash, a private investment may not be as readily realisable as a listed share. This can affect portfolio liquidity and introduce a lag between a change in market conditions and a change in the reported valuation.

Concentration and high-conviction decisions

Holding fewer, larger positions can make successful investments meaningful to returns, but it also increases the effect of an individual mistake, business failure or sector downturn. A beginner should not assume that a long list of company names automatically means broad diversification. The size of each position and its relationship with the others matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Baillie Gifford’s factsheet dated 30 April 2026 reported that the top 30 holdings represented 82.8% of total assets. That is a dated snapshot, not a current October 2026 figure, and it illustrates why the latest factsheet should be checked before investing.

Premium or discount to NAV

The market price can move independently of NAV. Buying at a premium means paying more than the value attributed to the underlying assets. If that premium narrows, the share price can fall even if NAV is flat. Buying at a discount can provide a different starting point, but a discount can widen and remain in place.

Discounts and premiums are influenced by sentiment, liquidity, expectations for performance, the level of gearing and views about private-asset valuations. They are not a guaranteed source of profit.

No capital guarantee

Shareholders can lose money. The trust does not guarantee the amount invested, and neither a long-term objective nor a diversified list of holdings removes market risk. A beginner should treat the investment as risk capital that is not needed for essential spending.

What it costs

The trust’s ongoing charge

Scottish Mortgage reported an ongoing charge of 0.33% as at 31 March 2026. The company said this comprised a 0.30% management fee and 0.03% in other administrative expenses. This is the trust-level cost reported for that date; it is not a quotation for every future period.

Cost item Figure or treatment What it means
Ongoing charge 0.33% as at 31 March 2026 Trust-level annual operating cost reported by Scottish Mortgage
Management fee 0.30% as at 31 March 2026 Part of the reported ongoing charge
Other administrative expenses 0.03% as at 31 March 2026 Part of the reported ongoing charge
Platform or account fee Depends on the provider Charged by the ISA or dealing account provider, if applicable
Dealing charge Depends on the provider and transaction May apply when buying or selling shares

The 0.33% figure does not include an investor’s platform, account or dealing charges. Compare those separately. A low trust charge can still result in a costly account if the provider’s fixed fees or trading charges are high for the size and frequency of the investment.

Costs that are easy to overlook

  • Bid-offer spread: the buying price and selling price can differ, particularly in less liquid conditions.
  • Market-price effects: paying a premium or selling at a discount changes the investor’s result independently of NAV.
  • Borrowing costs: gearing introduces financing expenses within the trust.
  • Taxes and account rules: treatment depends on the investor’s country, account type and circumstances; check the current rules and provider documentation.

What the portfolio figures tell you

The following figures come from Baillie Gifford’s 30 April 2026 factsheet and should be treated as historical snapshots. The official documents index lists an October 2026 factsheet, but its extracted portfolio figures were not available in the material used here.

Measure Reported value Date and qualification
Private companies as a share of total assets 40.5% across 53 companies Baillie Gifford factsheet, 30 April 2026; not a current October figure
Top 30 holdings as a share of total assets 82.8% Baillie Gifford factsheet, 30 April 2026; portfolio composition can change

These numbers do not predict future returns. They show why a buyer should read the latest factsheet for current private-asset exposure, concentration and other portfolio statistics before placing an order.

Decision axis Scottish Mortgage Alternative category to investigate
Diversification High-conviction global growth portfolio Broad global equity index fund or another more diversified global fund
Private assets Includes private and public growth companies Public-market-only global equity fund
Management Actively managed Index-tracking global equity fund
Leverage Can borrow to invest An unleveraged fund, after checking its documents
Time horizon Designed for long-term growth; official material warns against horizons under five years Cash or lower-volatility assets for short-term needs, recognising they are not like-for-like equity alternatives
Total cost 0.33% ongoing charge at 31 March 2026, plus investor-level costs Compare each fund’s current ongoing charge, platform fee and dealing costs

A broad global equity fund

A broad global fund can provide exposure to many more companies and reduce reliance on a small number of high-conviction positions. An investor still faces equity-market losses, but the portfolio construction is usually simpler to understand. Check whether the fund is actively managed or index-tracking, how many companies it owns, which markets it covers and its current charge.

A public-market-only fund

Excluding private companies removes some valuation and liquidity complications. It does not remove market risk, and listed shares can still be volatile. The key question is whether daily market pricing and easier dealing are more important to you than access to private growth businesses.

An unleveraged fund

An unleveraged fund does not borrow to increase exposure, although individual holdings can still be risky. Read the prospectus and annual report: “unleveraged” should be confirmed in the fund’s documents rather than assumed from its name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash or lower-volatility assets

If the money is needed soon, cash or lower-volatility assets may fit the time horizon better than an equity trust. They will not provide the same long-term growth exposure and should not be presented as a direct substitute. The decision is about matching risk to when the money is required.

A practical beginner decision process

  1. Set the purpose and date. Write down what the money is for and the earliest date you may need it. If that date is inside five years, pause before considering this trust.
  2. Separate essential reserves. Keep emergency savings and near-term spending money outside a volatile equity investment.
  3. Test your loss tolerance. Imagine the share price falling sharply and staying down for years. If you would probably sell because the loss is unbearable, choose a risk level you can hold through.
  4. Decide whether you need income. The trust targets total return, not dependable regular payments. Do not buy it to fund bills unless you have assessed that uncertainty carefully.
  5. Read current documents. Check the latest factsheet, annual report, gearing information, private-company exposure, NAV, share price and current premium or discount.
  6. Compare the complete cost. Add the trust’s ongoing charge to your platform, account, dealing and spread costs. Fixed fees can have a large effect on small balances.
  7. Choose an account that suits you. A UK ISA or share-dealing account may be available through some providers, but eligibility, fees and dealing arrangements differ. Confirm current terms directly with the provider.
  8. Consider position size. A concentrated trust may be more appropriate as one component of a diversified portfolio than as the only investment. Decide the role it will play before buying.
  9. Use a written review rule. Review when your objective, horizon or the trust’s structure changes, rather than reacting to every daily price move.

Questions to check before placing an order

  • Do I have a five-year-or-longer horizon?
  • Could I meet an unexpected expense without selling?
  • Would a large temporary loss cause me to abandon the plan?
  • Do I understand that the share price can diverge from NAV?
  • Have I checked current gearing and private-company figures?
  • Am I comfortable with an active, concentrated growth approach?
  • Have I compared the 0.33% trust charge, dated 31 March 2026, with all account and dealing costs?
  • Would a broad, unleveraged or public-market-only fund better match my objective?

If several answers are no, Scottish Mortgage is unlikely to be a sensible first holding. If the answers are yes, it can still be volatile, so the decision should be based on portfolio role and risk capacity rather than the label “beginner.”
