Some plastic twine is recyclable, but usually only through a dedicated agricultural-plastics program. Polypropylene baler twine is accepted by programs in some regions; that does not make every plastic string recyclable or authorize putting it in a household curbside bin. Identify the twine, check the current rules with your municipality or agricultural-waste authority, prepare it exactly as instructed, and never burn it.
What kind of twine are you disposing of?
“Plastic twine” covers more than one product. Agricultural baler or bailing twine is commonly made from polypropylene, a thermoplastic that some specialist agricultural-plastics programs collect and send for processing. The County of Barrhead, Alberta, describes its accepted baler twine as polypropylene and says collected material is sent to recycling facilities to be made into pellets for new materials. That demonstrates a recycling route in that program; it is not proof that every polypropylene twine product, processor or community accepts it.

Do not assume that natural-fiber twine, unidentified cord, binder string, synthetic garden twine or twine contaminated with other materials follows the same route. If the packaging is available, use its material information. Otherwise, ask the receiving program whether it accepts the exact product before transporting it.

Is plastic twine accepted in curbside recycling?
Do not put loose twine in a curbside recycling cart unless your local authority expressly lists it. The documented options are dedicated agricultural collection programs, transfer-station routes and collection projects—not a universal household-bin rule. Twine can wrap around sorting equipment, and a local material-recovery facility may have no outlet for it.

How to dispose of plastic twine: a verification-first process
- Identify the product. Record whether it is agricultural baler twine, the stated polymer (often polypropylene), and whether it is mixed with net wrap, bale film, wire, tape or other cord. If you cannot identify it, describe it and send a photograph or packaging details to the waste authority.
- Find the responsible local service. Contact your municipal recycling or waste department, agricultural extension or environmental office, or a regional agricultural-plastics program. Search the authority’s current website for “agricultural plastics,” “baler twine” or “bailing twine.” Services and participating sites change, so an old flyer or a site in another county is not enough.
- Ask the acceptance questions before loading a vehicle. Confirm that the site accepts plastic twine—not only bale wrap or silage film—and ask whether it distinguishes polypropylene from other twine. Check the current drop-off address, opening hours, event dates, appointment requirement, quantity limits and whether rejection or disposal fees can apply.
- Follow that program’s preparation rule. Typical instructions include removing dirt and plant matter, keeping the twine separate from net wrap and other plastics, and placing it in a specified clear bag or liner. The receiving program’s instructions override examples from another region.
- Keep the load dry and contained. Tie or contain loose strands only in the way the program permits. Do not add net wrap, bale film, feed sacks or household rubbish to a twine bag unless the site explicitly allows that mixture.
- Check the site again on the day of delivery. Verify that the location and hours are current and that the program has not paused collection or changed its container requirement. Some schemes distribute collection bags; do not assume a generic shopping or contractor bag is acceptable.
- Use the authority’s fallback if recycling is unavailable. If no program accepts the material, ask the local waste authority which permitted residual-waste facility or event should receive it. Do not improvise by burning, burying or abandoning it.
How to prepare twine so a program can accept it
Remove contamination
Shake or brush off loose soil, hay, crop residue, snow and ice. Brazeau County’s Alberta instructions specifically call for shaking off debris, snow and ice. A load with substantial organic material can be rejected or sent to landfill instead of recycling.
Separate incompatible materials
Keep polypropylene twine apart from net wrap and other foreign material unless the receiving site says they can be combined. Net wrap is a different product stream in many agricultural-plastics systems. Brazeau County warns that net wrap mixed with twine can lead to rejection or landfill disposal.

Use the required bag or liner
Some programs request loose twine in a clear collection bag; Environment Canterbury specifies a liner and requires the twine to be clean, separated and bagged. A program may supply bags or identify an approved liner. Confirm the specification before buying containers, because a bag that works in one region may be refused in another.
Do not “clean” it with chemicals
The cited programs call for removal of physical debris, not washing with solvents or adding chemicals. Avoid creating contaminated wastewater or mixing chemicals into a recyclable load. Ask the receiving site if a particularly dirty or weathered batch needs a different handling route.

The Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group also announced on December 16, 2025 that Alberta’s Ag-Plastic Recycle It! pilot would continue and expand with renewed funding: Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group announcement. Treat that announcement as a reason to check current Alberta service information, not as a guarantee that every transfer station accepts every kind of twine.
What happens when twine is dirty or mixed?
Recycling programs need a predictable feedstock. Soil, hay, crop residue, ice and moisture add weight and can interfere with processing. Net wrap, bale film, wire and miscellaneous rubbish can require a different processor. For that reason, a site may reject a contaminated load or send it to landfill; some operators may charge a disposal fee. Ask about the consequence before delivery rather than assuming the site will sort the load for you.

If a bag has already been mixed, separate the materials if the program allows it. If the twine is fused with mud, rotted organic matter or another product and cannot be separated economically, show the load details to the waste authority and follow its residual-waste instructions.
Why burning plastic twine is not an acceptable fallback
Open burning can release harmful toxins and creates uncontrolled ash and smoke. The Government of Alberta explicitly says agricultural plastics should not be burned and notes that burning plastic is not permitted under the provincial regulation cited on its guidance page. That statement is Alberta-specific, but the practical instruction is broader: do not burn plastic twine on a farm, in a stove, barrel or bonfire. Ask your own waste authority for the permitted alternative when no recycling outlet exists.

Common mistakes and the safer correction
- Putting twine in the blue bin because it is plastic: check the municipal list first; use a specialist agricultural route when required.
- Assuming every string is polypropylene: identify the product or ask the program; natural-fiber and unidentified twine may have different handling rules.
- Leaving net wrap in the twine bag: separate it unless the site expressly permits mixing.
- Delivering a wet, dirty bale of twine: remove debris, snow and ice as instructed and keep the prepared load contained.
- Buying containers before checking the rules: some programs provide bags and others require a particular liner; verify first.
- Relying on an old list of drop-off points: confirm current hours, participation and service status before making the trip.
- Burning it when collection is inconvenient: contact the local waste authority for the legal fallback.
Is there a universal recycling rate or a guaranteed free service?
No broadly applicable published statistic establishes what share of plastic twine is recycled. The regional examples prove that collection and processing are possible, not that service is universal or that every route is free. Fees, quantity limits, bags, appointments and accepted polymers are local program conditions. Treat any historical number—such as ERDE’s 114 partners and 530 collection points reported in December 2020—as a dated program figure, not a current worldwide network size.
A practical decision rule
If the twine is known agricultural polypropylene and a current local program lists it, prepare and deliver it under that program’s rules. If the material is unidentified, mixed or heavily contaminated, obtain a decision from the receiving authority before transport. If no recycling route exists, use the authority’s permitted residual-waste option. In every case, keep plastic twine out of an ordinary curbside bin unless the local instructions specifically say otherwise, and never burn it.
