Usually, only when the price reduction on the fuel you will actually buy is greater than the fuel burned on the extra round trip. Compare the two prices, the gallons or litres you plan to purchase, and the additional distance—not the cheaper station’s total distance from home. If the trip also costs extra time, tolls, parking or vehicle wear, include those before deciding.
For a U.S. example, a 10-cent-per-gallon discount on a 10-gallon purchase saves $1. If reaching that station adds 10 round-trip miles in a 25-mpg car while fuel costs $3.50 per gallon, the detour burns $1.40 of fuel. The lower pump price loses $0.40 before time or other costs.

The calculation that answers the question
Use the same fuel grade at both stations and calculate only the incremental trip caused by choosing the cheaper one. In U.S. gallons and miles:
- Gross pump savings = (nearby price per gallon − farther price per gallon) × gallons you expect to buy.
- Added fuel cost = extra round-trip miles ÷ your realistic miles per gallon × the price per gallon of fuel used on the detour.
- Net fuel savings = gross pump savings − added fuel cost.
- Break-even price gap = added fuel cost ÷ gallons you expect to buy.
A positive net result means the detour saves money on fuel alone. A zero or negative result means the cheaper pump price does not cover the extra fuel. For an overall trip decision, subtract the value of additional time and any incremental tolls, parking or other expenses as well.

The method is the same one explained by WorthIt’s fuel-cost calculator. That calculator does not quantify vehicle wear, parking or tolls, so those items must be considered separately. MoneyHelper similarly advises taking a diversion only when the saving justifies the extra miles.
How to calculate your own break-even point
1. Establish the price difference
Record the current price for the same grade—for example, regular unleaded at both locations. Subtract the farther station’s price from the nearby station’s price. A $0.07 difference means the farther station is seven cents cheaper per gallon. Do not compare regular with premium or a cash-only price with a price you cannot obtain.
2. Use the amount you will actually buy
Multiply the price gap by the gallons you expect to pump, not by your tank’s full capacity unless you are filling it. A two-gallon top-up has far less potential savings than a 15-gallon fill. If you are buying a fixed dollar amount, convert it to gallons at the station price before applying the formula.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Measure the extra round-trip distance
Compare the route you would otherwise drive with the route that uses the cheaper station. If the station is already on your route, count only the additional miles caused by the stop. If it requires a separate out-and-back trip, include both directions. The relevant number is not the station’s distance from home; it is the difference between the two complete trips.
4. Use realistic fuel economy
Use the vehicle’s actual recent fuel economy rather than its best advertised rating. A dashboard average over similar driving is useful. Cold weather, traffic, hills, idling, cargo and towing can reduce mileage, so a conservative figure avoids overstating the saving.
5. Price the fuel burned on the detour
Multiply the extra miles by fuel consumed per mile (1 ÷ your miles per gallon), then by the current price per gallon. The fuel price used for this step can be the price you would pay for the detour fuel; it need not equal either station’s posted price if the route uses a different source.

6. Subtract and test the result
Subtract added fuel cost from gross pump savings. You can also calculate the break-even price gap first. If the actual gap is smaller than that threshold, the detour cannot pay for itself on fuel alone.

Worked U.S. example
The following uses illustrative assumptions, not a live market quote.
| Input | Value | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Price reduction at farther station | $0.10 per gallon | Nearby price minus farther price |
| Fuel purchased | 10 gallons | Actual planned fill |
| Extra round-trip distance | 10 miles | Incremental route distance |
| Vehicle fuel economy | 25 mpg | Realistic detour mileage |
| Fuel price for detour | $3.50 per gallon | Used to price burned fuel |
| Gross pump savings | $1.00 | $0.10 × 10 gallons |
| Added fuel cost | $1.40 | 10 ÷ 25 × $3.50 |
| Net fuel result | −$0.40 | $1.00 − $1.40 |
| Break-even price gap | $0.14 per gallon | $1.40 ÷ 10 gallons |
The farther station would need to be at least 14 cents per gallon cheaper to break even on fuel in this example. At exactly 14 cents, the fuel result is zero; any time, toll or parking cost would make the trip uneconomic.
Why the amount purchased changes the answer
The station’s discount applies to every gallon you buy, while the detour’s fuel cost is largely determined by distance. That means a larger fill can justify a fixed detour more easily than a small top-up.
- With a $0.10-per-gallon gap, buying 3 gallons creates only $0.30 of gross savings.
- Buying 10 gallons at the same gap creates $1.00.
- Buying 15 gallons creates $1.50, before the detour cost.
Do not buy fuel you do not need merely to “capture” a discount. The calculation should use the quantity you would reasonably purchase on that trip.
Route position matters more than map distance
A station already on the planned route
Suppose you are driving past a station on the way to work and the cheaper location is one additional mile off the route. Use the added out-and-back distance from that turn, not the station’s distance from your house. A stop that adds almost no distance can be worthwhile even when its posted price is only slightly lower.

A dedicated fuel trip
If you would otherwise go directly home, include the full extra route to the cheaper station and back to your destination. A map showing that the station is “five miles away” may conceal a 10-mile round trip.
A combined errand
If you already need to visit a store, pharmacy or workplace near the cheaper station, allocate only the incremental distance and time attributable to fueling. Combining errands can turn a losing fuel detour into a sensible stop, but do not assign the entire trip to the gas purchase.
Include time and other trip costs
Fuel-only math can overstate the benefit of a detour. For a whole-trip decision, account for:
- Time: value the extra minutes using an hourly figure that reflects your priorities, wages or the value of personal time. A 20-minute delay can outweigh a small pump saving.
- Tolls: add any toll charged only because of the cheaper station.
- Parking: include paid parking or parking fees required to reach the station.
- Vehicle wear: extra miles contribute to tires, maintenance and depreciation. WorthIt’s calculator notes this category but does not quantify it, so treat it as a separate cost rather than assuming it is zero.
- Congestion and reliability: an unpredictable route can impose a practical cost even when its average distance is short.
A simple full-trip expression is: net fuel savings − value of extra time − tolls − parking − other incremental costs − a reasonable allowance for wear. You do not need a perfect dollar estimate; the purpose is to prevent a one-cent price difference from being treated as a guaranteed profit.
Use a break-even table before leaving
For a fixed 10-mile detour in a 25-mpg car with $3.50 fuel, the added fuel cost is $1.40. The required price gap changes with the amount purchased:
| Gallons purchased | Gross savings at a $0.10 gap | Break-even gap for the $1.40 detour |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | $0.30 | $0.47 per gallon |
| 10 | $1.00 | $0.14 per gallon |
| 15 | $1.50 | $0.09 per gallon |
These are calculated illustrations using the stated assumptions. They show why a small top-up almost never supports a long special trip, while a nearly empty tank and a large verified discount may.

U.K. guidance uses different units
MoneyHelper’s consumer guidance, last updated 10 August 2026, gives a rough U.K.-specific rule: avoid driving more than 2 miles round trip for each 1p per litre saved. It is a heuristic, not a universal threshold. It reflects U.K. litres and pence and should not be applied to U.S. gallons, dollars or another country without a proper conversion and vehicle-specific calculation.

Prices change frequently, and a discount that has disappeared by arrival is no saving. Check the price shortly before leaving and confirm that both stations sell the same grade. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance from May 2011 says: Shop around. Specialized phone apps and websites can help find the lowest gas prices in your area, and many gas stations advertise regular weekly specials.
Price apps and websites can reduce the time needed to compare stations, but they do not replace the detour calculation. A listing may be delayed, show a different fuel grade or omit a condition attached to the posted price.
Do not rely on fuel-saving gadgets
The FTC also advises skepticism toward devices and additives marketed as ways to increase fuel economy. Its guidance reports that the Environmental Protection Agency found very few such products provide benefits. A gadget that supposedly offsets a long drive should not be treated as a saving unless credible, independent evidence supports the claim. The dependable levers in this decision are the price gap, quantity, route distance, actual fuel economy and trip costs.

A practical decision checklist
- Write down both current prices for the same fuel grade.
- Estimate the gallons or litres you will actually purchase.
- Map the normal trip and the cheaper-station trip.
- Record only the additional round-trip distance and time.
- Use realistic vehicle fuel economy.
- Calculate gross pump savings.
- Calculate fuel burned on the detour.
- Subtract to obtain net fuel savings and calculate the break-even price gap.
- Add time, tolls, parking and a reasonable wear allowance if judging the whole trip.
- Proceed only if the saving remains meaningful after those costs, or if the station is effectively on your route.
What fuel economy can and cannot tell you
Fuel economy is one input in the detour calculation, not a guarantee of a particular saving. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explained in an 11 July 2014 article that fuel costs depend on fuel economy, miles driven and fuel price. Its historical illustration said that a consumer driving 12,000 miles per year at $3.50 per gallon would save $45 annually by moving from 30 mpg to 31 mpg. That example describes a vehicle-efficiency change over a year, not the result of driving to a cheaper station, and it is not a current average.
For the station decision, the important question is how much fuel your vehicle will consume on the additional miles under the conditions of this trip. A car that normally achieves 30 mpg may use more fuel in stop-and-go traffic or while idling in a queue.
The bottom line for everyday choices
Driving farther is worth it when the discount on the fuel you would otherwise buy exceeds the cost of the additional miles—and when the time and other expenses do not erase the difference. Calculate the break-even gap before leaving. If the cheaper station is already along your route, the incremental distance may be small enough to justify a modest discount. If it requires a special trip, a low price per gallon alone is not evidence of a saving.
