Is Bitcoin an Inflation Hedge? What the Evidence Shows

Bitcoin is a conditional and unreliable inflation hedge. Some research finds it rises after unexpected U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, but that response depends on the inflation measure, the period studied and the market regime. The result does not appear for Core Personal Consumption Expenditures (Core PCE) inflation in the latest cited study, and it weakens after COVID-19. Bitcoin also behaves like a risk-sensitive asset: its links with equities, interest-rate policy and financial-market stress can produce losses when a hedge would ideally provide diversification.

Gold has a more persistent inflation relationship in the cited comparisons. Bitcoin may have a role in a diversified plan for someone who accepts very high volatility, but the evidence does not justify treating it as dependable purchasing-power insurance or buying it solely because inflation is high.

What an inflation hedge is supposed to do

An inflation hedge is an asset expected to preserve real purchasing power when the prices of goods and services rise. A useful hedge should perform across different inflation regimes, not merely rally on a few announcement days. It should also diversify the rest of a portfolio when inflation, tighter monetary policy or an economic shock hurts stocks and bonds.

That definition matters because most Bitcoin studies test a narrower question: how its return responds to an inflation expectation or an inflation surprise over a specified sample. A positive average response in one model is not a promise that a holder will maintain purchasing power over a year, a decade or a currency crisis. It says nothing by itself about taxes, trading costs, custody losses or the price paid for the asset.

What the main studies actually found

Inflation expectations: positive only in limited cases

Smales, in Accounting & Finance (first published November 16, 2023), examined Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency returns against changes in U.S. inflation expectations and compared the results with gold. Bitcoin showed positive relationships only in limited circumstances, particularly for short-term expectations and when expected inflation was below the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Gold’s relationship was more robust across the tests.

This distinction is important. An expected increase in prices is different from an unexpected inflation shock. If investors already anticipate inflation, the information may already be reflected in market prices. A surprise can trigger a different reaction, especially when it changes expectations for interest rates and liquidity.

Inflation surprises: CPI worked in one model, Core PCE did not

Rodriguez and Colombo’s 2025 study in the Journal of Economics and Business used vector autoregression models and monthly data from August 2010 through January 2023. It identified surprises around U.S. CPI and Core PCE announcements. Bitcoin returns rose after positive CPI surprises in the model, but there was no comparable response to Core PCE surprises.

The CPI result was concentrated in earlier years and weakened after COVID-19. The authors describe Bitcoin as, at best, a context-specific inflation hedge. Their finding therefore cannot be converted into a rule such as “Bitcoin goes up whenever CPI rises.” It applies to an unexpected component of one index, in a particular sample and model.

Macroeconomic announcements: sometimes no measurable response

A New York Federal Reserve Staff Report by Benigno and Rosa (Staff Report 1052, February 2023) used intraday event-study data. In that sample, Bitcoin was orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news, unlike other U.S. asset classes. “Orthogonal” here means the study did not detect a systematic return response to the news events it examined. That result sits alongside, rather than cancels, the monthly CPI-surprise result: different frequencies, events and methods can produce different estimates.

Connectedness and spillovers rise during stress

IMF Working Paper 23/213 (September 29, 2023), by Iyer and Popescu, found that return and volatility spillovers between crypto and traditional financial assets increase during turbulence and risk-off episodes. The authors warn that crypto assets can transmit financial shocks. A hedge that becomes more correlated with other risky assets during a sell-off may fail at the moment diversification is most valuable.

Equity and monetary-policy sensitivity

Another IMF Working Paper, 23/163 (August 4, 2023), identifies a crypto factor that explains 80% of variation in crypto prices. It reports increasing equity correlation as institutional participation grew and finds that Federal Reserve tightening reduces the crypto factor. This helps explain why a high-inflation period can be difficult for Bitcoin: inflation may push central banks toward higher rates, and higher rates can reduce demand for risk-sensitive assets.

Does Bitcoin go up when CPI rises?

Only under a narrower condition than the headline question suggests. The cited 2025 study found a positive Bitcoin response to unexpected U.S. CPI inflation, not to every CPI release and not necessarily to inflation that markets had already priced in. It did not find the same response for Core PCE surprises.

Question What the cited evidence says How to interpret it
Does Bitcoin respond to positive CPI surprises? Yes, in Rodriguez and Colombo’s monthly VAR analysis, with the effect concentrated in earlier years. A sample-specific short-run relationship, not a standing trading rule.
Does Bitcoin respond to Core PCE surprises? No comparable response was found in that study. The inflation index changes the answer; CPI and Core PCE are not interchangeable.
Does Bitcoin respond to expected inflation? Smales found positive relationships only in limited cases, especially short-term expectations below the Fed’s 2% target. Expectation levels and horizons matter.
Does Bitcoin always react to macro news? The New York Fed event study found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its sample. Results vary with event selection, frequency and market regime.

CPI and Core PCE also differ in construction and coverage, so a result tied to one should not be generalized to the other. When reading a market headline, check whether it refers to the headline or core measure, an actual reading or a surprise relative to forecasts, and a daily, monthly or intraday return.

Why the inflation-hedge result changes over time

Bitcoin’s market matured

The strongest CPI response in the 2025 analysis came from earlier years, before broad institutional participation. As ownership, derivatives, exchange infrastructure and professional trading changed, the investors setting prices and the other assets they hold changed too. A relationship estimated in an early, less liquid market may not survive in a later one.

Interest rates can dominate the inflation story

Inflation news affects more than expected prices. It can alter the path of policy rates, real yields, liquidity and the discount rate applied to speculative assets. The IMF’s finding that Federal Reserve tightening reduces the crypto factor means a favorable inflation narrative can be overwhelmed by a rate shock. Bitcoin can therefore rise on one inflation surprise and fall later when markets reassess the policy response.

Risk appetite is a separate driver

Bitcoin’s return is influenced by investor appetite for risk. During calm periods, new demand can lift crypto prices even without an inflation catalyst. During a risk-off episode, investors may sell it alongside equities and other liquid assets to raise cash. The IMF’s documented increase in spillovers during turbulence is evidence against assuming that Bitcoin will automatically offset losses elsewhere.

Bitcoin versus gold as an inflation hedge

Gold is the relevant benchmark because it has a much longer history as a store of value and is included directly in the cited comparisons. Smales found gold’s inflation relationship more robust than Bitcoin’s. Rodriguez and Colombo also characterize Bitcoin’s response as context-specific rather than persistent, leaving gold with the stronger record in their comparison.

Comparison axis Bitcoin Gold
Response to inflation expectations Positive only in limited circumstances, especially short-term expectations below 2% in Smales’s tests. More robust relationship in the cited comparison.
Response to inflation surprises Positive for U.S. CPI surprises in one 2025 model; not for Core PCE surprises. More persistent inflation-hedging evidence in the cited studies.
Persistence across periods CPI effect concentrated in earlier years and weakened after COVID-19. More established historical role, although no asset hedges every episode.
Diversification in stress Crypto-financial spillovers and correlations increase in turbulence and risk-off periods. The supplied studies do not quantify a specific gold allocation or guarantee.
Volatility High volatility can create large drawdowns even when an average inflation response is positive. Typically treated as the lower-volatility comparator, but the cited studies provide no common volatility estimate.

The table does not mean gold is risk-free or that it will outperform in every inflation episode. It means the empirical case for gold is more consistent in the studies cited here, while Bitcoin’s result depends more heavily on the exact test.

Should you buy Bitcoin when inflation is high?

High inflation alone is not a sufficient buying signal. Before making a decision, separate the economic question from the portfolio question.

1. Identify the inflation information

  • Is inflation an actual reading or a surprise versus the market forecast?
  • Is the report U.S. CPI, Core PCE or another country’s measure?
  • Is the horizon short-term expectations, a one-month return or a multi-year purchasing-power goal?

The cited studies do not establish a universal result for every country or inflation index.

2. Model the likely policy response

Ask whether the inflation news is likely to bring tighter monetary policy, higher real yields or reduced liquidity. The IMF’s evidence that tightening lowers the crypto factor makes this a central risk to any inflation-based Bitcoin thesis.

3. Test your tolerance for drawdowns

A hedge can have a positive average response and still lose a large amount over an interim period. If a fall would force you to sell for rent, debt payments or emergencies, the position is not functioning as insurance. No cited study supplies a guaranteed holding period, allocation percentage or future return.

4. Decide what job the asset has

Bitcoin may be a speculative, diversifying or long-term monetary thesis in a personal plan, but calling it an inflation hedge implies a reliability the evidence does not establish. If the goal is specifically to offset inflation, compare it with assets whose inflation behavior is more persistent in the cited studies rather than assuming that a fixed supply guarantees results.

Can Bitcoin preserve purchasing power in a currency crisis?

Bitcoin can be transferred across borders and is not issued by a national central bank, which may make it relevant to someone facing capital controls or a rapidly weakening currency. Those characteristics are not the same as demonstrated purchasing-power preservation. The cited studies analyze U.S. inflation expectations, U.S. CPI and Core PCE surprises, macro news and market connectedness; they do not establish Bitcoin’s performance in every country’s currency crisis.

In a crisis, practical constraints can dominate the monetary narrative. A holder may face exchange outages, limited local liquidity, security failures, taxes, regulatory changes, transaction delays or the need to sell into a falling market. The evidence supplied does not quantify any of those costs or guarantee access to a market when it is most needed. Treat cross-border portability as a potential feature, not proof that real purchasing power will be maintained.

Risks that a simple hedge label hides

  • Volatility and drawdowns: A short-run positive response to an inflation shock can coexist with severe losses caused by rates, liquidity or risk aversion.
  • Regime dependence: Results differ between pre- and post-COVID periods and between expected inflation, CPI surprises and Core PCE surprises.
  • Correlation during stress: IMF research finds stronger crypto-financial spillovers in turbulent and risk-off markets.
  • Policy exposure: Federal Reserve tightening has been associated with a lower crypto factor.
  • Implementation risk: Custody, exchange, counterparty, fee, tax and regulatory risks are not measured by the cited inflation studies.
  • Measurement mismatch: A U.S. index response does not automatically describe household costs, foreign inflation or an individual’s personal basket.

How to read future claims about Bitcoin and inflation

  1. Check the inflation measure: headline CPI, core CPI, PCE or Core PCE.
  2. Check whether the study uses an announced value, a forecast surprise or a change in expectations.
  3. Check the return window: intraday, daily, monthly or a multi-year real return.
  4. Check the sample dates and whether they include the post-COVID and institutional-adoption periods.
  5. Check what happens in risk-off episodes, not only the average result in normal markets.
  6. Check whether the comparison is against gold or another asset and whether volatility, fees and taxes are included.
  7. Reject conclusions that turn one positive coefficient into a guarantee, a required allocation or a forecast of future price.

The practical verdict

Bitcoin is not a dependable, all-weather inflation hedge on the evidence available here. It has shown a positive response to some unexpected U.S. CPI inflation, while failing to show the same response to Core PCE and losing strength in later periods. The cited IMF papers also link crypto prices to equities, monetary policy and stress-related spillovers. Gold remains the more established comparator for inflation protection in the cited studies.

That leaves Bitcoin as a high-risk asset whose inflation behavior is conditional on the index, expectations, sample period and market regime. Buy it only if you can tolerate substantial losses for reasons unrelated to inflation and if its role in your broader plan remains acceptable when the hedge thesis fails.
