Probably not—unless your household would genuinely enjoy the pool even when the grandchildren are busy elsewhere. No credible study establishes that installing a pool makes grandchildren visit often enough to justify an $80,000 price. An in-ground pool can be a wonderful gathering place, but it is a permanent lifestyle purchase with continuing maintenance, safety duties and uncertain resale value. Before excavating, test demand with a portable or above-ground pool, recurring swim outings or another activity your family will actually use. If you still want an in-ground pool, treat $80,000 as a starting point rather than a complete budget and obtain detailed local quotes.

What does an $80,000 pool really cost?

The headline price can be plausible, but the final project total depends on what is included. NerdWallet reports an average in-ground pool cost of about $66,000 in 2025, with materials alone ranging from roughly $14,000 to $135,000. HomeGuide reports a $62,500 national average and a typical range of $25,000 to $100,000. Neither figure guarantees that your quote includes every necessary component.

Cost item What the published figures establish Why your total can differ
In-ground installation NerdWallet: about $66,000 average (2025); HomeGuide: $62,500 average and $25,000–$100,000 typical range (2025) Pool type, excavation, drainage, soil, access and labor vary by site
Materials About $14,000–$135,000, according to NerdWallet Concrete, fiberglass and vinyl liners have different durability and replacement profiles
Decking and fencing May be separate line items Size, materials and local code determine the amount
Permits, utilities, cover and heater May be separate line items Local requirements and desired swimming season add cost

Ask each contractor for an itemized quote covering site preparation, permits, decking, a code-compliant fence, cover, filtration, heating, electrical and plumbing work, startup chemicals and landscaping restoration. Comparing only the excavation and shell price can make an $80,000 project appear cheaper than it is.

How much will ownership add each year?

A pool creates recurring bills and work after construction. NerdWallet says maintenance can cost a few hundred dollars per month. Redfin reports average annual maintenance of about $1,200–$1,800, while noting that location, climate, materials and neighborhood practices change the result.

  • Routine cleaning and skimming
  • Filter operation and replacement
  • Water testing and chemical balancing
  • Repairs to pumps, heaters, liners or surfaces
  • Electricity and water use
  • Seasonal opening and closing in climates where pools are winterized
  • Cover, fencing and surrounding-deck upkeep

Budget for owner time as well as cash. A pool that is used only on occasional visits may deliver less value per hour of maintenance than a household that swims several times a week.

Will a pool actually make the grandkids visit more?

There is no sourced evidence that pool ownership causes grandchildren to visit more frequently. The answer depends on distance, their ages, swimming ability, school and activity schedules, parents’ preferences, weather and whether the adults enjoy hosting. A pool may make visits more appealing, but it cannot overcome travel, timing or supervision constraints.

Make the financial decision on a testable premise: would you still want the pool if visits were less frequent than hoped? If the answer is no, do not commit to excavation until you have tested demand.

What safer, reversible tests can you try first?

Lower-cost options let you learn whether regular swimming gatherings fit your family before making a permanent change.

  1. Try a portable or inflatable pool. Nationwide Children’s describes these as low-cost and easy to set up. They still require barriers, supervision and prompt emptying or secure storage when appropriate.
  2. Consider an above-ground pool. NerdWallet places many above-ground pools around $1,000–$6,000, before site preparation and accessories. Confirm local rules for decks, electrical connections and fencing.
  3. Schedule recurring swim outings. Rent pool time, use a community pool or arrange a standing weekly visit. Track attendance over a full season rather than relying on one enthusiastic weekend.
  4. Test a non-water activity. A shaded play area, outdoor games or a shared meal may create more reliable gatherings if swimming is not the real draw.

These tests do not prove an in-ground pool will increase visits, but they reveal whether the family can coordinate regular time together.

What safety infrastructure is required for grandchildren?

Safety is part of the purchase price and the operating plan. CDC guidance calls for a four-sided fence at least four feet high that completely encloses the pool, separates it from the house and uses a self-closing, self-latching gate. Verify your local code because jurisdictions can require stricter dimensions, alarms or barriers.

The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends permanent perimeter protection, CPR training for household adults and older children, a poolside phone, life buoys or personal flotation devices and a reaching tool. Constant, attentive adult supervision remains necessary; swimming lessons and flotation devices do not replace it. CDC warns that floaties, arm bands and water wings do not prevent drowning.

CDC’s May 29, 2025 guidance says more children ages 1–4 die from drowning than from any other cause. It also reports about 4,500 U.S. emergency-department visits each year for pool-chemical injuries, with more than one-third involving children or teenagers. Store chemicals securely, follow label directions and include testing, storage and handling equipment in your first-year budget.

Could a pool hurt your resale prospects?

Resale payback is uncertain. Consumer Reports says owners should not expect to recover the full pool expense when selling and quotes licensed real-estate salesperson Francie Malina of Compass Real Estate: “Homes with pools can have fewer showings than the same house without a pool.” Redfin says the effect varies with location, climate, pool type, materials and neighborhood norms.

Before building, ask local agents how buyers in your market view pools and whether comparable homes sell faster, slower or at different prices. A pool that is standard in a warm-climate neighborhood can be a burden in a market where buyers prefer low-maintenance yards.

How should you decide whether to build?

Use the following screen before signing a contract:

  • Independent enjoyment: You expect to use the pool regularly even without grandchild visits.
  • Complete budget: Your cash plan covers construction extras, safety equipment, maintenance and repairs—not just the advertised shell price.
  • Time capacity: Someone can handle testing, cleaning, opening, closing and supervision.
  • Local fit: The season length, climate, code requirements and neighborhood resale pattern support the project.
  • Safety readiness: Fencing, gate hardware, emergency access, CPR training and rescue equipment are installed before swimming begins.
  • Reversibility preference: If you are uncertain, you choose a portable, inflatable or above-ground trial first.

If the pool fails the first two tests—independent enjoyment and a complete budget—it is a poor strategy for buying family time. If it passes, obtain multiple local bids and have the contract specify every allowance and responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a pool without a four-sided fence if my grandchildren can swim?

Do not assume swimming ability changes the requirement. CDC guidance calls for a four-sided enclosure at least four feet high with a self-closing, self-latching gate, and local rules may be stricter; ask your building department before construction.

Are above-ground pools exempt from the same supervision rules?

No. A smaller or temporary pool can still present a drowning hazard. Use appropriate barriers, keep a responsible adult within constant reach or sight, and secure or empty the pool according to its size and local guidance.

What should a pool contract say about an $80,000 budget?

Require an itemized scope listing excavation, permits, shell, decking, fence, cover, filtration, heater, electrical work, startup chemicals, cleanup and allowances for difficult soil or access. Put change-order procedures and payment milestones in writing.

Does homeowners insurance automatically cover a new pool?

Coverage and liability limits differ by insurer and location. Notify your insurer before construction, ask whether the pool, fencing and equipment are covered, and confirm whether higher liability limits or specific safety features are required.
