Growth describes what investors expect the company and its earnings to do. Value describes whether the market price is below a defensible estimate of the business’s worth. Alphabet’s recent expansion supports the growth label, but no single P/E ratio proves that GOOGL or GOOG is undervalued.
The practical answer therefore has two parts: assess Alphabet’s operating growth, then decide whether the price adequately compensates you for its risks, reinvestment needs and uncertain future cash flows.

Value stock and growth stock are not opposites
A growth stock is generally associated with above-average expansion in revenue, earnings, users or addressable markets. Investors often accept a higher valuation because they expect future results to be materially larger than today’s results. The label describes the operating trajectory and the expectations embedded in the price.

That estimate might use normalized earnings, cash flows, assets or another valuation method. A company can be growing quickly and still be a value stock if the market price is too low. Conversely, a slow-growing company can be expensive and fail a value test.
#1 Best Overall
Alphabet sits where those ideas overlap. Its businesses have recently expanded at a substantial rate, so “growth-oriented” is an appropriate description of the company. Whether the stock is value depends on the price you pay and on assumptions about future revenue, margins, capital spending, competition and risk.
What Alphabet’s latest operating results show
Alphabet is a large, multi-business company whose principal operations are reported through Google Services, Google Cloud and Other Bets. Google remains the largest business, but Cloud and newer products affect the company’s growth mix and investment requirements.
| FY2025 measure | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $402.836 billion | 15% year-over-year growth, according to Alphabet’s 2026 reporting |
| Operating income | $129.039 billion | Historical operating profit, not a forecast |
| Net income | $132.170 billion | Historical profit attributable to the fiscal year |
| Diluted earnings per share | $10.81 | FY2025 diluted EPS, not a forward estimate |
Alphabet’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said in the company’s February 4, 2026 earnings release that annual revenue exceeded $400 billion for the first time. That milestone illustrates the scale of the platform, but scale alone does not guarantee future growth. Alphabet’s 10-K cautions that historical revenue growth and operating margins may not indicate future performance.
The results support a growth classification because revenue increased 15% year over year while the company generated more than $129 billion in operating income. They do not, by themselves, establish that the shares are cheap. A share-price judgment requires comparing the price with future—not merely historical—earnings and cash generation.
What the October 2026 valuation snapshots say
Market multiples are time-sensitive. The following figures are third-party snapshots dated October 13, 2026, supplied by StockAnalysis, which identifies S&P Global Market Intelligence as its data source.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Share class | Trailing P/E | Forward P/E | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOOGL (Class A common stock) | 17.70 | 26.18 | Forward figure depends on analysts’ estimates and the quoted share price on the snapshot date |
| GOOG (Class C capital stock) | 17.59 | 24.60 | Separate quote and estimate set; the two classes can trade at different prices |
A trailing P/E divides a current share price by earnings already reported. A forward P/E divides the price by an estimate of future earnings. The forward number can change whenever analysts revise their forecasts, and both ratios change when the share price moves. They are useful starting points, not intrinsic-value calculations.
The difference between the two share classes also matters. GOOGL is Class A common stock and GOOG is Class C capital stock. Do not copy the multiple for one ticker to the other or assume that a small quoted difference represents a lasting arbitrage opportunity. Check the current quote, share-class terms and the date of the data before making a comparison.
Why Alphabet looks like a growth company
Google Services still provides a powerful base
Search, advertising, YouTube and related consumer products give Alphabet a large installed audience and multiple ways to develop new features. Growth can come from increased usage, better ad formats, pricing, new commercial categories and expansion of products beyond the original search business. The company also reports that changing user behavior and advertiser demand can affect results, so the size of the existing platform is an advantage rather than a guarantee.
Cloud and AI create additional expansion paths
Alphabet identifies Google Cloud, AI products and its broader portfolio as opportunities. Cloud can add a business line with different buying cycles and workloads from advertising. AI can improve products, introduce new services and change how users interact with Search and other offerings. Those possibilities justify a growth-oriented description, but they involve execution and monetization uncertainty. An AI feature may increase usage without producing equivalent revenue, or it may require expensive infrastructure that reduces margins before the economics improve.
Large earnings can compound even from a high base
Alphabet’s scale does not eliminate growth. A company producing hundreds of billions of dollars in annual revenue can still expand if its major businesses gain share, increase monetization or develop new markets. The relevant question is whether the percentage growth rate and incremental profitability remain attractive as the base gets larger.

Why value investors still examine Alphabet
The shares can look inexpensive on selected earnings measures
Value investors may begin with the October 13, 2026 trailing and forward P/E snapshots because they provide a market-price reference. A multiple that appears moderate relative to expected earnings can prompt further work. It does not prove a bargain: the denominator may be temporarily high, estimates may be too optimistic, or the business may deserve a lower multiple because its risks have increased.

Profitability must be weighed against reinvestment
Alphabet’s earnings are substantial, but the company is also investing heavily in technical infrastructure. In its February 4, 2026 results release, Alphabet anticipated 2026 capital expenditures of $175 billion to $185 billion. That range is dated company guidance, not a realized full-year total. It signals the scale of spending that may be required for servers, data centers and other infrastructure supporting AI and Cloud.
For a value analysis, compare operating performance with the cash that remains after necessary capital spending. The supplied figures do not establish a complete free-cash-flow forecast, so an investor should not infer one from net income or EPS alone. Heavy investment could support much higher future earnings, but it can also depress near-term cash generation and returns if demand or monetization disappoints.
Durability is part of intrinsic value
A durable franchise can justify a higher valuation than a business whose profits are vulnerable to rapid disruption. Alphabet’s value case therefore depends on the durability of Search and advertising, the ability to defend distribution and technology advantages, and the conversion of Cloud and AI investment into sustainable profits. Those are business judgments, not outputs supplied by a single market ratio.
Risks that can change the classification
Advertising concentration
Alphabet identifies dependence on advertising as a risk. Advertiser budgets can change with economic conditions, campaign performance, pricing and shifts in consumer attention. A slowdown in advertising can affect revenue and margins even if users continue to visit Google’s products.
Rank #4
Competition and user behavior
Competition can come from established technology companies, specialized services, new search interfaces and products that alter how people discover information. Alphabet’s filing highlights changes in customer usage and demand, competition, advertiser spending and pricing as factors that can affect growth. A growth thesis must therefore specify how the company retains users and commercial intent, not simply assume that historical behavior continues.
AI monetization and margin pressure
Alphabet describes AI offerings as potential sources of business and revenue benefits while warning that different monetization approaches could change revenue-growth and margin trends. Serving AI systems can require substantial computing capacity. If revenue develops more slowly than infrastructure costs, operating margins may narrow. If products are monetized successfully, the same investment could support a larger earnings base. The outcome is uncertain rather than guaranteed.
Infrastructure spending and execution
The $175 billion–$185 billion 2026 capital-expenditure guidance makes execution especially important. Delays, cost inflation, underutilized capacity or a change in technology could reduce returns on that investment. Conversely, underinvesting could weaken product quality or leave Alphabet less competitive. The right valuation must reflect both possibilities.
Regulatory and operating exposure
Alphabet’s 10-K includes regulatory and other operating risks. Changes in rules, legal outcomes, data practices, distribution arrangements or product requirements can affect costs, product design and revenue. These risks may not appear in a trailing P/E until financial results change.

A practical framework for deciding whether the shares offer value
Use the growth label to describe the business, then perform a separate valuation exercise. A disciplined process can follow these steps:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Choose the exact security. Decide whether you are analyzing GOOGL Class A or GOOG Class C. Record the quote and date because the share prices and multiples can differ.
- Establish a base year. Start with FY2025 revenue of $402.836 billion, operating income of $129.039 billion, net income of $132.170 billion and diluted EPS of $10.81. Keep historical results separate from forecasts.
- Build explicit operating scenarios. Estimate revenue growth for Google Services, Cloud and other businesses rather than applying one rate to the entire company. State what happens to advertising demand, AI adoption and user behavior in a bear, base and bull case.
- Model margins and reinvestment. Include infrastructure and capital spending, using the February 4, 2026 $175 billion–$185 billion guidance only as dated guidance. Test whether margins expand, remain stable or contract as AI and Cloud investment rises.
- Convert earnings into value. Use a method that matches your assumptions, such as a discounted-cash-flow model or a normalized earnings multiple. A defensible intrinsic-value estimate requires future revenue and earnings, margins, capital expenditure, a discount rate and a terminal value.
- Stress-test the risks. Lower advertising growth, reduce AI monetization, increase infrastructure costs or apply a lower terminal multiple. If a small change eliminates most of the estimated upside, the valuation has a narrow margin of safety.
- Compare price with a range, not a point estimate. Consider a valuation range under several scenarios and compare it with the current quote. Avoid treating the October 2026 P/E snapshot as a target price.
- Set a review trigger. Revisit the thesis when results show a material change in growth, margins, capital spending, user behavior, competition or regulatory conditions.
How to interpret GOOGL versus GOOG
Both tickers represent Alphabet exposure, but they are separate share classes. GOOGL is Class A common stock and GOOG is Class C capital stock. Their prices and market-data multiples can diverge, as the October 13, 2026 snapshot demonstrates. Use the ticker you actually intend to buy in every valuation calculation.
The share-class distinction does not turn a growth business into a value business. It can, however, affect the price you pay and the economics of your holding. Compare the current price, liquidity, class rights and any premium or discount before choosing between the two.
When the answer could change
Alphabet would look less clearly growth-oriented if revenue expansion slowed materially across Services, Cloud and newer businesses, or if sustained infrastructure spending produced little incremental profit. It could look more compelling to a value investor if durable cash generation exceeded conservative expectations and the market price failed to reflect that strength.

A high-growth label would not protect shareholders from overpaying, and a moderate P/E would not protect them from deteriorating earnings. The classification should be updated when the underlying economics or the market price changes, rather than treated as a permanent identity.
Bottom line
Alphabet is a growth-oriented company with characteristics that can attract value investors. FY2025 revenue growth, large operating profits and opportunities in Cloud and AI support the growth side. The October 13, 2026 P/E figures provide a valuation starting point, not proof of undervaluation. Advertising dependence, competition, uncertain AI monetization, regulatory exposure and exceptionally large infrastructure spending all affect what the business is worth.
Calling Alphabet “growth” answers what kind of business it is. Calling GOOGL or GOOG “value” requires a separate, assumption-driven conclusion that the current price is below intrinsic value with an adequate margin of safety.
