For a quick refund check or a simple task on your phone, use the current IRS app. For forms, detailed guidance, broader account services, and choosing among payment methods, start at IRS.gov. The app is not a replacement for the website or for the IRS’s full online-account system.
There is an important naming change: on September 25, 2026, the Internal Revenue Service replaced IRS2Go with a new app. Existing IRS2Go users do not need a separate download when automatic updates are enabled; the replacement arrives through the normal app-store update. This article keeps the familiar “IRS2Go” wording so you can find it, but the current product is called the IRS app.

Which is better, IRS2Go or the IRS website?
The better channel depends on the task rather than on a universal speed or quality advantage. Choose the app when you already know what you need and want to complete a short mobile action. Choose IRS.gov when you need to understand an issue, find a form or publication, compare payment methods, or use a service that is not included in the app.

Is the IRS app replacing IRS2Go?
What changed in September 2026
Yes. The IRS announced the replacement app on September 25, 2026. The new app retains the core IRS2Go functions and adds selected services that require a secure sign-in. The agency described the change as putting “more services at taxpayers’ fingertips,” in the words of IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. That is the IRS’s characterization of the launch, not an independent performance test.
Do current users need a new download?
Usually not. If automatic updates are enabled, the new app is delivered through the existing app listing. If your device does not update automatically, open its official app store and check for an update. Begin at IRS.gov/app if you are unsure which listing is authentic. Do not install an app reached through an unsolicited text, email, advertisement, or an unfamiliar download site.
Can I check my IRS refund on the app?
Yes. The IRS app allows a refund-status check without signing in. It also lists a status service for amended returns. IRS.gov offers the same basic route through the Where’s My Refund? tool.
Checking in the app
- Open the current official IRS app.
- Select the refund-status service.
- Enter the information requested on screen and submit it through the app.
- Read the displayed status and any instructions about what to do next.
The app’s refund check is a public-status function, so you do not need to create or enter an online-account session merely to make this inquiry. Keep your filing information private and use only your own device or a trusted connection.
Checking on IRS.gov
- Go to the IRS website and open the Where’s My Refund? route.
- Follow the form’s prompts and submit the requested filing information.
- Review the status message and any action the IRS requests.
The current materials do not establish a universal update interval. An archival IRS notice from 2020 said the tool updated once every 24 hours, usually overnight, but that page is historical and should not be treated as current timing guidance.

Do I need to sign in to check my refund?
No. A refund-status check is available in the app without signing in, and the IRS.gov Where’s My Refund? route is likewise designed for the basic status inquiry. Signing in becomes relevant when you want account information rather than a simple refund status.
When signing in is useful
A secure app session can expose selected Individual Online Account information, including balances, payment activity, notices, records, transcripts, and profile options. Availability can depend on the account and service. Signing in does not turn the app into the complete website: the IRS says its web-based Individual, Business, and Tax Pro online accounts continue to exist.
Can I pay my taxes through IRS2Go?
Some payments can be initiated through the current IRS app, including certain transactions that do not require sign-in. Signed-in users may also see account-based payment and payment-history options, subject to availability. The app is therefore useful for a known, supported payment task, but it is not the IRS’s complete payment directory.
For a new bill, an unfamiliar tax, a business payment, or a deadline-sensitive transaction, begin at IRS.gov/Payments. Select the method that matches your tax, account, deadline, and fee tolerance. Do not assume that every method is available for every type of liability.
IRS payment methods: what each option does
The IRS recommends electronic payment when possible. Publication 509 (2026) lists the following choices.
Rank #3
| Method | How it works | Sign-in or enrollment | Cost and timing considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRS Direct Pay | Schedules a payment directly from a bank account. | No sign-in is required. | Free. A scheduled payment can be changed or canceled within two days. |
| Debit card, credit card, or digital wallet | Uses an IRS-approved payment processor. | Follow the processor’s checkout process. | Processor fees may apply. Confirm the amount before submitting. |
| Electronic Funds Withdrawal | Schedules payment while you file through tax software or a tax professional. | Set up during the filing process. | Availability and timing depend on the filing service and return. |
| EFTPS | An electronic federal tax payment system used to schedule payments. | Enrollment is required. | The IRS identifies it as the best option for businesses; allow time for enrollment and setup. |
| Check or money order | Mail payment to the address shown on the notice or payment instructions. | No online account is required. | Follow the notice exactly and allow for mailing time. |
| Cash | Pay at a participating retail location. | Follow the retailer and IRS instructions before visiting. | Availability is limited to participating locations; confirm acceptance and timing in advance. |
| Same-day wire | Request a wire through a financial institution. | Arrange it with the institution and follow IRS instructions. | May be available for some payments. Confirm availability, bank charges, and cutoff times. |
Why Direct Pay is often the simplest individual option
Direct Pay is a free bank-account payment method and does not require an IRS account sign-in. It can be convenient when you know the amount and tax period, have the required bank information, and want to avoid card-processor fees. The two-day change-or-cancel window applies to a scheduled Direct Pay transaction; it is not a general cancellation right for every IRS payment method.

When a card or digital wallet may make sense
A card or digital wallet can be useful when you do not want to use a bank-account debit or need the payment method offered by an approved processor. Fees may apply, so compare the processor’s charge with the amount being paid. The IRS does not make the processor fee disappear simply because you began in the app.
Why businesses may prefer EFTPS
EFTPS is designed for electronic federal tax payments and requires enrollment. The IRS identifies it as the best option for businesses, but enrollment means it is not necessarily the fastest choice immediately before a deadline. Confirm setup status and payment deadlines before relying on it.
Paper, cash, and wire alternatives
A check or money order can be mailed to the address on the relevant notice or instructions. Cash is available only through participating retail locations and requires advance attention to the retailer’s process. A same-day wire may be possible through a financial institution, but availability, fees, and cutoff times must be confirmed for the particular payment.
How to choose the right channel for a tax payment
- Identify the liability. Determine whether you are paying an individual balance, an estimated payment, a notice, a business tax, or another obligation. The payment type affects eligibility.
- Check the deadline and settlement timing. A method that can be scheduled today may have different cutoff rules from a mailed check or bank wire.
- Compare the fee. Direct Pay is free; card and digital-wallet processors may charge; banks may charge for wires.
- Decide whether you need a record. Signed-in account activity can be useful for tracking, while a confirmation number or receipt should be retained for any method.
- Use the official instructions. Start at IRS.gov/Payments and follow the route for the specific payment rather than selecting a generic option that may not accept your tax type.
- Verify the confirmation. Save the confirmation number, scheduled date, amount, and payment method. Do not submit a second payment merely because a page takes time to display a result; first verify whether the original transaction succeeded.
What account services are in the app?
The app extends selected Individual Online Account services. After secure sign-in, users may be able to view balance information, payment activity, notices, records, transcripts, and profile options. The word “selected” matters: the app does not expose every web-account function, and availability can vary by service and account.

IRS.gov remains the broader starting point for account work. It supports the IRS’s online-account ecosystem, including Individual, Business, and Tax Pro accounts, while the app is principally a mobile front end for a subset of services. If you are acting for a business or as a tax professional, do not assume that an individual app session covers the account or authorization you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security: is the IRS app safe to use?
The IRS says information sent between the app and IRS systems is encrypted. Tax-account information is not stored permanently as app data on the device. While you are signed in, a temporary session credential is kept in protected device storage; signing out ends the active session.
Safer use on your device
- Install or update the app only through a verified link beginning at IRS.gov/app or the official app-store listing.
- Keep your phone’s operating system and app updated.
- Use the device screen lock and avoid leaving an authenticated session open on a shared device.
- Sign out when you finish account work, especially on a device other people can access.
- Do not send your Social Security number, bank details, passwords, or one-time codes in response to an unsolicited message.
Recognizing look-alike apps and messages
The IRS warns against look-alike applications, misleading advertisements, and unsolicited requests for personal or financial information. An app name, logo, or search-ad placement is not proof of authenticity. Navigate from IRS.gov, check the publisher shown by the official app store, and avoid links supplied by unexpected callers, texts, emails, or social-media messages.
Device and language requirements
The current IRS app requires iOS/iPadOS 15.1 or later or Android 7.0 or later. It is available in English and Spanish. The reviewed IRS material does not enumerate a specific browser version for IRS.gov, so a modern, supported browser is the practical choice when the app cannot run on your device.

If your phone is too old for the app, the website is the fallback for refund checks, payment instructions, forms, and guidance. A browser does not automatically provide every account capability; use the website’s own sign-in route and follow its instructions.

Common problems and what to do
The app still shows the IRS2Go name
Check whether automatic updates are enabled and look for an update in the official app store. If you are uncertain about the listing, start at IRS.gov/app rather than deleting the app and searching randomly.
A payment option is missing
Payment availability depends on the tax, account, amount, deadline, and method. Switch to IRS.gov/Payments to review the full menu and eligibility rules. A missing app button does not mean the IRS has no way to accept the payment.
The refund result has not changed
Check that the information entered matches the return and use the official status route again later. The current IRS materials do not promise a universal refresh schedule. Do not rely on the archival 2020 statement about an overnight, 24-hour update as a current guarantee.

Use the appropriate IRS.gov online-account route. The consumer-facing app’s selected individual services do not replace Business or Tax Pro account access.
Bottom line: which should you use?
For an uncomplicated refund check, either the official IRS app or IRS.gov is suitable, and neither requires an account sign-in for the basic status inquiry. For a quick mobile action, the app is the more convenient interface. For forms, explanations, broad service coverage, business or professional account work, and payment-method selection, IRS.gov is the better starting point.
For paying a tax bill, choose by payment type, eligibility, deadline, and fee—not by assuming one interface is always superior. Direct Pay is the free bank-account option without sign-in; approved card and digital-wallet processors may charge; EFTPS, electronic funds withdrawal, mailed payment, cash, and wire each have their own requirements. Verify the method at IRS.gov before submitting and keep the confirmation for your records.
