Short answer: An IPO lot size is the fixed minimum number of shares in one bid, and it differs for every issue. A cut-off bid is a retail instruction to accept the final price discovered within the issue’s price band; it is not a discount. ASBA and UPI applications normally block money in your own bank account rather than taking it immediately. The amount for allotted shares is debited after allotment, while excess or unallotted funds are released. Listing gains are possible, but neither allotment nor a profitable first-day listing is guaranteed.

What an IPO application actually contains

An Indian book-built IPO application combines four decisions: the issue, the number of lots, the bid price or cut-off instruction, and the payment route. The issuer’s offer document and the current NSE or BSE issue page provide the controlling terms for that particular offer. Those terms include the price band, bid lot, application window, mandate deadline and expected allotment dates.

These details are issue-specific. There is no universal Indian IPO lot size or permanent timetable. A live exchange issue page displays the bid lot and price range for each issue, so do not carry figures from an older IPO into a new application.

  • Bid lot: the minimum number of shares in one application unit.
  • Lots applied for: the number of those units you request. Your total quantity equals bid lot multiplied by lots.
  • Price band: the permitted lower and upper bid prices.
  • Application amount: quantity multiplied by your bid price, subject to the issue’s category and rules.
  • Payment instruction: ASBA through a participating bank or UPI-based blocking through the public-issue process.

Applying for more shares does not create a promise of allotment, and neither payment route improves your probability. Allocation follows the issue’s category rules and the final basis of allotment.

How to find the lot size and choose quantity

Use the current issue documents

Look at the issuer’s offer document and the issue-information page on the relevant stock exchange immediately before submitting. Confirm the bid lot, price band, retail category limits, issue dates and any permitted lot increments. Registrar and issuer notices may update operational dates, so treat an old screenshot or social-media post as unreliable.

Calculate the amount that will be blocked

For a simple example, suppose an issue states a bid lot of 30 shares and a price band of ₹95 to ₹100. One lot at the upper end represents ₹3,000 (30 × ₹100); five lots represent ₹15,000. This is only an illustration of the calculation, not a live-issue term. If you enter a specific price rather than cut-off, use that bid price in the calculation. Your bank or UPI app may display the maximum amount requested for the application.

Decide how many lots you can fund

Choose a quantity you can leave blocked until allotment without disrupting rent, bills, emergency savings or other commitments. A larger bid can require more money to remain available, but it still does not assure a larger allotment in a heavily subscribed issue. Keep the entire maximum application amount available until the mandate is completed or released.

What does “cut-off price” mean?

In book building, investor bids help establish a final issue price inside the announced band. Selecting cut-off tells the issuer that, as a retail applicant, you are willing to subscribe at that final discovered price, provided it remains within the stated band. It is a price instruction, not a lower-price concession.

SEBI’s FAQ describes the cut-off option for retail applications up to ₹2,00,000. Eligibility thresholds and category rules can change, so check the current issue instructions and SEBI information before relying on that limit.

Cut-off versus a specific price

Choice What you are instructing Main consequence
Cut-off Accept the final discovered issue price within the band You do not need to predict the final price, but you must have funds for the permitted maximum amount
Specific bid price Bid at the number you enter within the band If the discovered price is above your bid, your bid may be ineligible for allotment

For example, with a ₹95–₹100 band, a ₹97 bid is not equivalent to cut-off. If the final price is ₹99, the ₹97 bid is below the discovered price and may not receive shares. A cut-off applicant accepts ₹99 in that example. The exact bid-revision facility and deadline are set by the issue.

ASBA: what happens to your money

ASBA means “Application Supported by Blocked Amount.” Instead of paying the application money to an intermediary immediately, your participating bank blocks the required amount in your account. SEBI Investor states: “In ASBA, money to the extent of price of the shares for which the investor has applied, is blocked, but it remains in their account till allotment.”

Typical ASBA sequence

  1. Open the IPO section in your participating bank’s ASBA facility.
  2. Select the issue and enter your PAN, demat details, bid lot or quantity, and price or cut-off instruction.
  3. Review the amount, bank account and category, then submit before the issue deadline.
  4. The bank places a lien or block for the application amount. The balance remains in your account and can generally continue to earn interest, but the blocked portion is not available for spending.
  5. After the basis of allotment, the amount for allotted shares is debited. Any excess block is released.

If you receive no shares, no separate refund is required because the money was never transferred out; the bank releases the block. With a partial allotment, only the allotted amount is debited and the remainder is released.

UPI applications and mandates

A UPI IPO application uses your UPI ID to authorize a bank-account block. The mandate is an authorization request, not an instruction to send the whole amount immediately.

Step-by-step UPI flow

  1. Apply through an eligible intermediary or broker’s public-issue interface and enter the applicant’s own eligible UPI ID.
  2. Submit the bid with the correct PAN, demat account, lot quantity and price or cut-off instruction.
  3. Watch the UPI app’s mandate or pending-requests area for the block request. NPCI’s public process description and the issue instructions govern the exact sequence and deadline.
  4. Open the request, verify the issuer, amount and application details, and authorize it with your UPI PIN before the stated cutoff.
  5. The linked bank account blocks the amount. After allotment, the allotted amount is debited and excess funds are released; if there is no allotment, the blocked amount is released.

Deadlines are not necessarily the same as the last time you can enter a bid. A bid submitted near closing can fail if its mandate is not approved by the issue’s mandate cutoff. Use the current issue notice for the exact time.

Who may supply the bank and UPI details?

Use the applicant’s own eligible bank account linked to the applicant’s UPI ID. SEBI says a retail application using a third-party UPI ID, or an application in any category using a third-party bank account, is invalid for allocation. Do not use a family member’s UPI handle merely because it is convenient. Eligible apps, banks and technical rules can change, so confirm the current list in the issue instructions and SEBI information.

ASBA and UPI compared

Point ASBA through a participating bank UPI-based public-issue application
How the bid is submitted Through the bank’s ASBA channel using the issue’s bid fields Through an eligible intermediary’s issue interface with a UPI ID
How the block is authorized The participating bank places the account block when it accepts the ASBA application The applicant approves a UPI mandate in the UPI app
Account requirement A bank account with a participating ASBA bank, with matching applicant details The applicant’s own eligible bank account linked to the applicant’s UPI ID
Status check Bank’s ASBA acknowledgement or account/lien status UPI app’s mandate or pending-requests section, plus application acknowledgement
If no shares are allotted The bank releases the block; no separate refund is needed The bank releases the UPI block
Where to escalate an unresolved problem Participating bank, registrar or lead manager, using the application acknowledgement UPI app or bank first, then intermediary, registrar or lead manager, using the application details and Unique Mandate Number

Both routes are payment mechanisms. Neither route changes the issue’s allotment formula or creates a listing-profit advantage.

What to do when an IPO UPI mandate is missing or stuck

Check the UPI app first

  • Open the app’s mandate, pending-request or IPO section rather than relying only on a push notification.
  • Confirm that the UPI ID in the application is the same ID currently active in the app.
  • Check whether the mandate is pending, approved, declined or expired, and whether the bank account has sufficient unblocked balance.
  • Do not approve a request whose issuer, amount or application details do not match your acknowledgement.

If no request appears

Retain the application number and contact the intermediary through which you applied. The bank or UPI provider can investigate delivery and account-linking issues; the registrar or lead manager can investigate an application that is not appearing in issue records. Ask for the status using the exact application details rather than submitting a duplicate application that could create a separate problem.

If the block is not released or the debit is wrong

Keep the application acknowledgement, UPI transaction information and Unique Mandate Number. Contact the relevant bank or UPI provider for the account-level block, and the intermediary, registrar or lead manager for an issue-level mismatch. Escalate in writing if the first response does not resolve the discrepancy. The responsible party depends on whether the failure is in the app, bank account, intermediary submission or allotment record.

Allotment outcomes and your cash

Full allotment

The amount corresponding to the shares allotted is debited from the blocked funds. Shares are credited to the demat account; IPO shares are delivered in dematerialized form, so a demat account is necessary.

Partial allotment

The allotted amount is debited and the unused balance is released. Check the released amount in the bank account rather than assuming that the original maximum block was the final debit.

No allotment

The blocked funds are released and no separate refund application is required. Release timing can depend on the bank, UPI provider and issue timetable; use the official registrar, issuer and exchange communications for the applicable date.

Details that commonly invalidate an application

Before pressing submit, compare the application screen with your identity and account records. SEBI’s guidance highlights the importance of matching details.

  • PAN belongs to the applicant and is entered without a typographical error.
  • Demat account details belong to the same applicant and are active.
  • The bank account and, for UPI, the UPI ID meet the issue’s eligibility rules and belong to the applicant.
  • Bid quantity is an exact multiple of the stated lot size.
  • Price is inside the published band, or cut-off is selected where permitted.
  • Funds cover the maximum amount that may be blocked.
  • The application acknowledgement, mandate request and Unique Mandate Number are saved.

A demat mismatch, third-party payment details or an invalid bid quantity can prevent allocation even when money was available.

Are IPO listing gains guaranteed?

No. The official process material explains bidding, price discovery, blocking and allotment; it does not establish a universal listing-gain rate or a reliable way to predict an individual issue’s first trading price. A high subscription figure is not a guarantee of a gain, and it should not be presented as one.

A listing return is usually calculated from the difference between the first traded price and the issue price, relative to the issue price, before considering taxes, brokerage and other costs. That outcome can be positive, zero or negative. It is separate from allotment: an applicant can receive shares and still face a listing below the issue price, or receive no shares and therefore have no listing exposure.

If you evaluate an issue-specific historical return, identify the named source, publication date, price used, trading session and calculation method. A past listing result is an observed outcome, not a forecast. Keep this market-risk decision separate from the mechanical choice between ASBA and UPI.

Final pre-submission checklist

  1. Read the current offer document and exchange issue page.
  2. Record the bid lot, price band, category limits, bid closing time and mandate cutoff.
  3. Calculate the maximum amount for your selected lots and confirm it is available.
  4. Choose cut-off only if you understand that it accepts the final discovered price and that you meet the current eligibility rule.
  5. Use your own PAN, demat account, bank account and, where applicable, UPI ID.
  6. Review every digit before submission and save the acknowledgement.
  7. Approve the UPI mandate in the app before its deadline, or confirm the ASBA block with your bank.
  8. Monitor allotment and release notices through the registrar, issuer, exchange and bank or UPI provider.
  9. Keep the Unique Mandate Number and application records until the debit, share credit or release is complete.

SEBI’s FAQ is dated May 2025, while issue terms, app and bank eligibility, mandate cutoffs and allotment dates are dynamic. Recheck the current official notices each time you apply.
