iPhone 17, iPhone Air, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max Prices Around the World (2026)

Apple’s 256GB iPhone 17 starts at $799 in the U.S., but that includes a carrier connectivity discount. Compare official prices worldwide and learn when importing actually saves money.

Prices checked August 10, 2026: Apple’s official starting prices for the 256GB models are $799 for iPhone 17, $999 for iPhone Air, $1,099 for iPhone 17 Pro, and $1,199 for iPhone 17 Pro Max in the United States. The iPhone 17 price includes a $30 connectivity discount that requires activation with a qualifying carrier; choosing to connect a U.S. iPhone 17 to a carrier later raises the displayed price to $829.

Japan was cheaper than the United States in the cited comparison of the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro, while Turkey was the most expensive of the 41 markets analyzed. That does not establish Japan as the cheapest place to buy every iPhone 17 model. Taxes, exchange rates, SIM configuration, customs, IMEI registration, warranty coverage, and carrier compatibility can change the result.

This article uses Apple’s direct retail prices wherever the supplied data could be verified. Local currency is the primary comparison; U.S. dollar conversions are not shown for other markets because a conversion without a single timestamped exchange-rate source would create false precision.

Official 256GB iPhone prices in six major markets

Apple lists 256GB as the entry storage capacity for the four products covered here: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple officially calls the thin model iPhone Air, not “iPhone 17 Air.” The lower-priced iPhone 17e is a separate product and is excluded.

The table uses new Apple direct-store retail prices rather than carrier advertisements, trade-in offers, or “free with a plan” promotions. Prices were checked on August 10, 2026. The exact tax treatment and SIM-free terms should still be confirmed on the local checkout page, particularly when comparing countries.

More official Apple prices

Apple’s regional landing pages also expose the following starting prices. In several cases, Apple presents the Pro and Pro Max together as a single “from” price. That is not enough evidence to report separate Pro and Pro Max prices, so they remain combined here.

Brazil R$7,999 R$10,499 From R$11,499 Apple Brazil

These figures should not be combined with unofficial reseller or gray-market listings in one ranking. A regional landing page can also change the way it displays a product, so open the detailed Apple product page before publishing separate model prices. For example, Apple’s U.K. and German detailed pages provide separate Pro and Pro Max prices.

How the iPhone 17 lineup launched

Apple announced the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air lineup on September 9, 2025. Pre-orders began on September 12, 2025, and the products became available in first-wave markets on September 19, 2025. See Apple’s announcements for the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Entry storage is consistent across the comparison, but the available higher capacities are not identical:

  • iPhone 17: 256GB and 512GB.
  • iPhone Air: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

Which country is cheapest?

There is no reliable single answer for the entire iPhone 17 family. The answer depends on the model, storage, tax basis, exchange-rate timestamp, and the markets included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest current finding in the supplied research is narrower: Japan was cheaper than the United States in a comparison of the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro. South Korea was approximately level with the U.S., and Switzerland was the least expensive European market in that comparison.

That finding should not be rewritten as “Japan is the cheapest country for the iPhone 17.” It concerns one model and one storage capacity. Apple can use different regional prices for the standard model, Air, Pro, and Pro Max, while currency movements can change the order over time.

A defensible model-by-model ranking requires all of the following:

  • The same 256GB configuration in every market.
  • Prices checked on the same date.
  • A single, timestamped exchange-rate source.
  • Consistent treatment of VAT, GST, sales tax, and import taxes.
  • New Apple retail devices rather than carrier promotions.
  • Comparable unlocked or SIM-free status.
  • A clear definition of whether the ranking uses sticker price or delivered cost.

The supplied official figures do not provide a complete, separately verified four-model table for every country in the wider comparison. It would therefore be misleading to publish unsupported claims such as “the cheapest iPhone Air is in Japan” or “the Pro Max is cheapest in the U.S.” without checking those exact configurations.

Which country is most expensive?

In the cited July 2026 comparison by Euronews using Deutsche Bank Research, Turkey was the most expensive of 41 markets for the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro. The reported price was more than twice the U.S. price. Brazil ranked second, while Egypt and Mexico were also near the expensive end.

The same analysis attributed Turkey’s unusually high total to taxes and its special consumption-tax structure. It also warned that a traveler returning to Turkey with a foreign-bought iPhone may face an IMEI registration fee. That charge can eliminate much or all of the apparent saving from buying abroad.

Again, this is a model-specific and date-specific result. It does not prove that Turkey is the most expensive market for the standard iPhone 17, iPhone Air, or Pro Max. Read the full Euronews comparison for the stated 256GB Pro methodology.

Why Apple prices differ so much between countries

Taxes and duties

VAT, GST, sales tax, import tariffs, special consumption taxes, and other local charges can make up a substantial part of a phone’s final price. The U.S. displayed price normally requires sales tax to be added at checkout, and the rate varies by state and locality. In the U.K., consumer prices generally include VAT; the GOV.UK VAT guidance explains how shoppers see VAT in retail pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing a U.S. pre-tax sticker price with a VAT-inclusive European price makes Europe appear more expensive than it may be on a tax-equivalent basis. Conversely, removing tax from a foreign price without considering whether a visitor is actually eligible for a refund can produce an unrealistic saving.

Currency and Apple’s regional pricing

Apple must price products in currencies that can move sharply against the U.S. dollar. Regional prices may incorporate currency hedging, expected exchange-rate risk, and the timing of Apple’s price reviews. A currency conversion made months after purchase can therefore show a different ranking from the one a buyer saw at checkout.

  • Shock Protection: Passing military drop tests up to 10 feet, your device is effectively protected from violent impacts and drops
  • Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you

Apple also sets prices according to local market conditions rather than applying one global exchange-rate formula. Competition, local income levels, distribution costs, regulatory compliance, repair infrastructure, and demand all influence pricing. A lower converted price does not necessarily mean a phone is more affordable to residents of that country; affordability relative to wages is a separate question.

Distribution and regulation

Countries can impose different requirements for radio certification, consumer protection, warranty handling, packaging, and import documentation. Where Apple sells directly, its pricing structure may differ from a country served mainly through authorized distributors. A reseller’s price may also reflect local inventory, financing, promotions, or scarcity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Carrier discounts

Carrier offers can make a phone look free, dramatically discounted, or cheaper per month. Those offers may require a new line, a specific plan, a trade-in, bill credits over several years, or an eligible customer account. They are not equivalent to an unlocked Apple retail price and should not be used in a global retail ranking.

The U.S. price trap: $799 is not the whole story

The U.S. starting price for the 256GB iPhone 17 is displayed as $799, but Apple says that figure includes a $30 connectivity discount requiring activation with a qualifying carrier. If the buyer chooses to connect the phone to a carrier later, Apple displays the same configuration at $829.

The $799 figure is therefore useful as a headline price, but it is not a universal cash price for every buyer. A visitor from another country may not qualify for the required carrier arrangement, and a carrier-financed or promotional price may have different obligations.

U.S. sales tax is separate. The actual checkout total depends on the delivery or pickup location. A buyer who travels to the U.S. must also account for card foreign-exchange fees, local tax, customs rules on return, and the risk that an imported U.S. model does not match the buyer’s preferred SIM setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a clean comparison, use both U.S. figures:

  • $799: iPhone 17 256GB with the qualifying-carrier connectivity discount.
  • $829: iPhone 17 256GB when choosing Apple’s connect-to-a-carrier-later option.

The $30 qualification note applies specifically to the U.S. iPhone 17 price described by Apple; do not automatically apply it to the Air, Pro, or Pro Max.

Is buying an iPhone abroad actually worth it?

Compare the landed cost, not merely the converted Apple sticker price:

Foreign Apple price
+ local tax not included in the displayed price
+ foreign-exchange or card fees
+ travel, shipping, or forwarding cost
+ destination customs duty or use tax
+ IMEI registration fee
+ required local service, plan, or eSIM cost
= actual delivered cost

For example, a Japanese 256GB iPhone 17 Pro may appear cheaper than the U.S. price in a currency comparison. The purchase only produces a real saving if the buyer can obtain the phone at the stated price, avoid or budget for local tax, pay reasonable exchange fees, bring or ship it legally, register it if required, and accept the imported model’s SIM and warranty characteristics.

Before buying abroad, use this checklist

  1. Record the exact configuration: model, storage, color if relevant, and regional model number.
  2. Check the final local checkout total: determine whether VAT, GST, sales tax, or other charges are included.
  3. Confirm that the phone is unlocked: do not assume that a carrier-connected purchase has the same terms as an Apple direct-store device.
  4. Check the SIM type: especially for U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Gulf-state, and Chinese purchases.
  5. Confirm carrier compatibility: verify eSIM activation and the relevant cellular bands with the destination carrier.
  6. Check customs and registration: search the destination country’s current rules before travel.
  7. Check service coverage: confirm whether Apple or an authorized provider will service that regional model in the destination country.
  8. Add payment costs: include card foreign-exchange spreads, international transaction fees, and shipping insurance.
  9. Compare against a local authorized seller: a small local premium may be worthwhile if it preserves easier returns and service.

U.S. customs and destination-country import rules

A foreign sticker price is not automatically a tax-free import. A U.S. resident returning from abroad should review U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. CBP says returning travelers generally have a personal exemption commonly amounting to $800, although the applicable treatment depends on the traveler’s circumstances and destination. Purchases above the exemption can be subject to duty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the CBP personal-exemption guidance and CBP customs and duty information. Buyers importing into other countries should consult that country’s customs authority, including rules for sales or use tax, declarations, and IMEI registration. Do not assume that carrying the phone in your luggage removes the obligation to declare it.

SIM and eSIM differences by market

Important: An iPhone bought abroad may not have the SIM tray or eSIM behavior that your home carrier expects. Confirm the regional variant before paying.

Apple identifies the following locations as selling eSIM-only versions of the iPhone 17 family: the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman. Models purchased outside those locations generally combine eSIM with a physical nano-SIM, subject to the specific model and market. See Apple’s SIM-type support page.

For an imported eSIM-only model to work, Apple says the device must be unlocked and the carrier must support eSIM activation. Verify both conditions with the carrier before buying; having an eSIM-capable phone does not guarantee that every carrier can activate it. Apple’s international eSIM support page provides further guidance.

China mainland requires particular caution. Apple states that, among the iPhone 17 family, only iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM in mainland China. Other models purchased outside mainland China cannot install an eSIM profile from mainland Chinese carriers. Apple also says that mainland China restrictions can apply to supported devices purchased elsewhere when used in mainland China with a mainland China Apple Account. See Apple’s China mainland eSIM guidance.

SIM configuration is not the only regional difference. Cellular bands, regulatory settings, local network features, and software availability can vary. “Works worldwide” is too broad a promise unless the exact model number and destination carrier have been checked.

Apple Intelligence and other regional restrictions

Feature availability is not necessarily identical across markets. Apple’s mainland China product page states that Apple Intelligence is currently unavailable on iPhone models purchased in mainland China. Apple also says supported devices purchased elsewhere may be restricted when used in mainland China with a mainland China Apple Account.

This is another reason not to treat the hardware as completely interchangeable worldwide. A lower purchase price can come with software or network limitations that matter more than the initial saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty, repairs, and AppleCare

Apple warranty service should not be assumed to be identical in every country. Repair options, replacement inventory, authorized-provider coverage, parts availability, and service eligibility can vary by country and model. The existence of an Apple-authorized provider does not guarantee that every repair or replacement option will be available for an imported regional variant.

Use Apple’s repair-provider verification tool to check providers, and review Apple’s service and parts information. Before importing, ask the destination provider whether it will service the exact model number.

AppleCare+ theft-and-loss replacement is also geographically limited. Apple lists participating markets and says international replacement depends on availability, region, model, and color. Review the current AppleCare theft-and-loss support information rather than assuming a plan purchased in one country will provide identical replacement service elsewhere.

How to make a fair worldwide price comparison

  1. Set one comparison date. For this article, that date is August 10, 2026.
  2. Choose one storage capacity. The most useful baseline is 256GB because it is the entry configuration for all four models.
  3. Use Apple’s direct store first. Record the local-currency price shown for the exact model.
  4. Record the regional variant. Note the model number, SIM configuration, and any market-specific restriction.
  5. Separate retail from carrier pricing. Exclude trade-in credits, monthly-plan offers, and “free” phone advertisements from the Apple price comparison.
  6. Record tax treatment. Mark whether tax is included, excluded, refundable only in limited circumstances, or unclear.
  7. Convert currencies consistently. If using USD, apply one timestamped exchange-rate source to every country. The calculation is generally local price ÷ local-currency units per U.S. dollar.
  8. Keep local prices visible. Exchange rates move; the local Apple price is the amount a buyer actually sees in that market.
  9. Calculate delivered cost separately. Add travel, payment fees, customs, local taxes, registration, and any necessary accessories or service.
  10. Recheck before purchasing. Apple can change price, stock, availability, or regional configuration without changing the product name.

What “around the world” means in practice

Apple does not sell every model through a directly operated Apple online store in every country. A useful global comparison separates sources into three tiers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Tier Source How to use it
1 Apple online store Best source for official local pricing, storage options, availability, and regional configuration.
2 Apple-authorized reseller or official local distributor Use where Apple has no direct local store, but verify whether the price includes local tax, warranty, and distributor-specific terms.
3 Gray-market importer or unofficial marketplace Label clearly as imported or unofficial. Check warranty, SIM configuration, customs, authenticity, and return rights.

Do not combine Tier 1 Apple prices and Tier 3 imported prices in one cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking. They are different products from a consumer-risk perspective even when the model name is the same.

Why common global iPhone price lists can mislead

Third-party databases can be useful for discovering markets and spotting anomalies. For example, ApplePriceCompare and the World Price Index can help identify countries to investigate. They should be treated as lead-generation tools, not final evidence, because they may mix dates, exchange rates, retailer data, availability, or tax assumptions.

General launch roundups often cover only the standard iPhone 17, mix base and Pro configurations, convert currencies using an unstated date, omit tax treatment, overlook eSIM-only variants, or treat carrier promotions as retail prices. A broad global pricing roundup can provide context, but Apple’s local store remains the stronger source for a purchase decision.

The July 2026 Euronews/Deutsche Bank comparison is more useful than a typical launch roundup because it uses one 256GB iPhone 17 Pro configuration across a broad set of markets. Its limitation is scope: it does not provide a complete four-model table, so its Japan and Turkey conclusions should not be transferred automatically to the iPhone 17, Air, or Pro Max.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest country to buy the iPhone 17?

There is no verified universal cheapest country for all four models. Japan was cheaper than the United States in the cited comparison of the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro, but that result does not automatically apply to the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Is the U.S. iPhone 17 really $799?

Apple displays $799 for the U.S. 256GB iPhone 17 with a $30 connectivity discount that requires activation with a qualifying carrier. The connect-to-a-carrier-later price is $829, and applicable sales tax is added separately.

Can I use a U.S. iPhone bought abroad?

Usually, but you must confirm that your carrier supports eSIM because Apple identifies the U.S. version as eSIM-only. The device must also be unlocked, and cellular-band, carrier, customs, warranty, and local registration requirements may apply.

Is Apple’s warranty worldwide?

Do not assume it is identical worldwide. Repair, replacement stock, authorized-provider service, parts, AppleCare availability, and theft-and-loss replacement can vary by country, model, and color.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does buying an iPhone abroad save money?

Only if the delivered cost remains lower after exchange fees, local and destination taxes, customs duty, IMEI registration, travel or shipping, and any service or SIM-related costs. A lower converted sticker price is not necessarily a lower final cost.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The U.S. has highly competitive headline pricing, but its iPhone 17 $799 figure includes a carrier-dependent discount and excludes sales tax. Japan was the lowest-priced market in the cited 256GB iPhone 17 Pro comparison, while Turkey was the highest among 41 markets, but neither result applies automatically to every model. For a genuine saving, compare the same 256GB configuration, use one exchange-rate date, verify tax treatment, and add customs, IMEI registration, SIM, warranty, and payment costs before buying abroad.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
