AT&T and T-Mobile were strongest for customers with valuable trade-ins, Verizon was competitive for customers already using an eligible premium plan, Boost Mobile advertised the clearest no-trade-in offer, and Apple was the better choice for buyers who valued flexibility over the largest subsidy.
These were launch-period offers—not current 2026 prices. iPhone 16 preorders began September 13, 2024, and retail availability began September 20, 2024. In most cases, “free” meant the phone was free only after 24 or 36 monthly promotional bill credits, not free at checkout.

Quick comparison of the 2024 launch offers
| Provider | iPhone 16 lineup offer | Trade-in? | Credit period | Best for | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Up to $830 off standard models; up to $1,000 off the Pro Max; iPhone 16 and Pro could be free after credits | Yes | Typically 36 months | Existing or new customers with an eligible phone | Qualifying unlimited plan, taxes and a $35 fee |
| T-Mobile | Up to $1,000 off eligible models; some Pro and Pro Max offers were advertised as free | Usually | Typically 24 months | Premium-plan customers and switchers | The best tiers could require a costly plan, port-in or new line |
| Verizon | Up to $1,000 off; iPhone 16 Pro could be “on us” with qualifying trade-in | Yes | Typically 36 months | Customers already on an eligible premium plan | Credits stop if eligibility ends |
| Boost Mobile | Advertised up to $1,000 in credit without a trade-in, plus a separate one-year-free-service campaign | Not for the advertised credit | Promotion-specific | Switchers who wanted to keep their old phone | Offer mechanics, plan terms and eligibility varied by channel |
| Apple | Apple Trade In, carrier activation and Apple Card Monthly Installments | Optional | No carrier-credit lock-in for a direct purchase | Buyers prioritizing flexibility or an unlocked phone | Usually less promotional savings than a carrier deal |
The largest advertised discount was generally $1,000, but that figure was not an immediate cash reduction and did not mean every old phone qualified. The better offer depends on your current plan, trade-in device, model, coverage needs and likelihood of keeping service until the credits finish.
What each iPhone 16 model could cost after the promotion
The 2024 lineup included the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Discounts were not interchangeable across models:

- iPhone 16: AT&T’s launch promotion could cover the base model after qualifying credits. Verizon and T-Mobile also offered substantial discounts in qualifying situations.
- iPhone 16 Plus: AT&T advertised up to $830 off, which could leave a balance on configurations priced above the promotional limit.
- iPhone 16 Pro: AT&T and Verizon could make the base Pro effectively free after an eligible trade-in. T-Mobile advertised comparable premium-plan offers.
- iPhone 16 Pro Max: AT&T advertised up to $1,000 off. Its launch-period Fiber-linked offer added another $200 for qualifying new AT&T Fiber customers, potentially making the 256GB model free after credits and other requirements.
A “free” base-storage phone does not make a higher-capacity version free. Any amount above the qualifying discount remains your responsibility through the installment plan.
AT&T: strongest documented trade-in offer for many existing customers
AT&T’s launch announcement offered the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro “on us” with an eligible trade-in, up to $830 off the iPhone 16 Plus, and up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The offer was promoted for both new and existing customers, subject to the plan, trade-in and installment requirements.
The normal structure was a 36-month, 0% APR installment agreement paired with monthly bill credits. For example, a $999.99 phone financed over 36 months would produce a gross device payment of about $27.78 per month. A matching promotional credit could reduce the net device payment to $0.

AT&T’s launch terms required a qualifying unlimited plan, an eligible trade-in and continued account eligibility. Taxes were due on the phone’s full retail price, and a $35 activation or upgrade fee could apply. Credits could take up to three billing cycles to begin. Canceling service or changing to an ineligible plan could end the credits while leaving the unpaid installment balance.
New AT&T Fiber customers were also offered an additional $200 toward a qualifying iPhone 16 Pro Max under a launch promotion scheduled to end October 10, 2024. That offer required qualifying Fiber and wireless service, a trade-in and other conditions.
AT&T also promoted Next Up Anytime, an optional $10-per-month feature that could allow earlier upgrades after meeting payment and turn-in conditions. It was separate from the phone discount and should be included in the calculation if purchased.
Best fit: An AT&T customer with a valuable, paid-off trade-in who expected to remain for all 36 months.

T-Mobile: up to $1,000, often with a shorter credit period
T-Mobile’s launch materials promoted up to $1,000 off eligible iPhone 16 models with a qualifying trade-in. Some launch offers presented the iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max as free after credits, but the strongest tiers could depend on a premium plan, port-in, new line or account-specific eligibility.
Many archived T-Mobile offers used 24 monthly bill credits. That was a shorter commitment than the 36-month structures commonly used by AT&T and Verizon, although a shorter term did not automatically make the offer cheaper. The required plan price was still the decisive factor.
T-Mobile promotions could combine an Apple instant trade-in credit with T-Mobile monthly bill credits. Those are different benefits: the instant credit reduces the amount financed, while the monthly credits arrive over time and generally stop if qualifying service is canceled.
Best fit: A switcher or existing customer who already wanted a qualifying premium plan and had a high-value trade-in.
Poor fit: A single-line customer who would pay substantially more each month just to obtain the maximum phone discount.

Verizon: competitive for customers willing to stay 36 months
Verizon’s launch promotion offered up to $1,000 off the lineup in qualifying situations and promoted the iPhone 16 Pro “on us” with an eligible trade-in and qualifying plan. The offer used Verizon’s Device Payment Program and monthly promotional credits rather than an immediate discount.
The most generous offer could require Verizon Unlimited Ultimate or another specifically eligible premium plan. Upgrade and new-line requirements also varied by promotion. Verizon’s support documentation says promotional credits can take one or two billing cycles to appear and end when the account no longer meets the requirements.
That makes Verizon attractive when you already have the required plan and coverage is valuable to you. It is less compelling if you would upgrade solely for the phone discount or expect to leave before the typical 36-month credit schedule ends.
Best fit: An existing Verizon customer already on an eligible premium plan, or a switcher who values Verizon’s network and can keep service for the full term.

Boost Mobile: the clearest no-trade-in alternative
Boost Mobile advertised up to $1,000 in credit for new customers without a trade-in. It also promoted a separate campaign offering one year of free service with the purchase of an iPhone 16. Eligible iPhone trade-ins through Apple could provide an additional $180 to $650 in credits.
These were separate promotional concepts, and the exact benefit could vary by model, plan and sales channel. A reader should confirm whether the advertised amount was an immediate device reduction, a service credit, a device credit or a combination.
Best fit: A switcher who wanted to keep an old phone rather than trade it in.
Poor fit: Someone who needed the broadest established-carrier support, immediate unlocking or a carrier-free financing arrangement. Coverage, plan pricing and account support should be evaluated alongside the phone credit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apple: less subsidy, more control
Buying through Apple provided Apple Trade In, carrier activation options and— for eligible purchases—Apple Card Monthly Installments at 0% APR. Apple’s checkout could also connect buyers with carrier promotions, but carrier activation could still impose the carrier’s plan and bill-credit rules.
A direct Apple purchase was potentially better if you wanted an unlocked phone, an immediate trade-in credit, the ability to keep a low-cost existing plan or the freedom to change carriers without losing promotional credits. The trade-off was that Apple generally did not offer the same carrier-subsidized headline discount as a qualifying carrier promotion.

How to calculate the real cost
Use this formula instead of comparing the headline discount alone:
Effective cost = upfront taxes and fees + extra service cost + remaining device balance or lost credits − promotional credits − trade-in value − included service benefits.
The most important comparison is usually the required plan against the plan you would otherwise choose. If a promotion requires paying $30 more per month for 36 months, the additional service cost is $1,080—already more than a $1,000 phone credit before taxes and fees.

Suppose your current plan is already eligible, your iPhone 13 meets the trade-in requirements and you expect to stay for 36 months. A $1,000 credit can be valuable because there may be little or no incremental plan cost. You still need to account for taxes on the undiscounted device price, activation or upgrade fees and any storage upgrade.
Example: a switcher with an iPhone 12
A switcher should compare the value of the iPhone 12 trade-in with the cost of moving to the required plan. A carrier offering $1,000 off may be worse than a smaller discount on a cheaper plan if the premium plan costs hundreds more over the credit period.
Example: no trade-in
Boost’s advertised no-trade-in credit stood out during launch, but it still required new-customer and plan eligibility. Keep the old phone only if its resale or backup value, combined with the service economics, beats a conventional trade-in offer.
Example: adding a line
A new-line promotion is not free money if you do not need the line. Include every month of the additional line, taxes and fees. For a one-phone household, an upgrade offer is usually easier to evaluate than an additional-line offer.
Example: leaving after 12 months
On a 36-month promotion, leaving after 12 months can eliminate the remaining 24 monthly credits. The remaining device balance may then become due. Treat that unpaid balance as part of the cost of switching early.
Trade-in and financing fine print
- Trade-in threshold: Verify the minimum value for the discount tier. AT&T’s original launch language used thresholds including $130 for the up-to-$830 tier and $180 or more for the up-to-$1,000 tier.
- Condition: Check whether cracked screens, water damage or other defects disqualify the phone or reduce its value.
- Existing balance: Do not assume a carrier will pay off your current installment agreement. The old phone may need to be paid off before trade-in.
- Deadlines: Ship or return the trade-in within the specified period and retain tracking information.
- Credit qualification: 0% financing and $0 down can be subject to credit approval.
- Taxes and fees: A $0 monthly device payment does not eliminate sales tax on the retail price or activation and upgrade fees.
- Credit timing: The first bill may not show the promotion. Verify that credits appear within the carrier’s stated window.
- Plan changes: Moving to a cheaper or otherwise ineligible plan can cancel the promotion.
- Unlocking: Check the carrier’s unlock policy before choosing a financed phone, especially if you travel internationally.
- Targeted offers: An advertisement or account upgrade screen may not apply to every customer.
Before shipping a trade-in, photograph the phone from every angle, record its serial number or IMEI, back up and erase your data, and retain the shipping receipt and tracking confirmation.
Which 2024 deal was best?
- Best for an existing customer with a qualifying trade-in: AT&T or T-Mobile, depending on the required plan and the model you wanted. AT&T was especially straightforward for a free base iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro; T-Mobile’s 24-month structure could be preferable when its premium plan already fit your needs.
- Best for a Verizon customer: Verizon, if you were already on—or genuinely wanted—the qualifying premium plan and could remain for 36 months.
- Best no-trade-in launch offer: Boost Mobile’s advertised up-to-$1,000 credit, subject to confirming the exact terms and evaluating its service economics.
- Best for flexibility: Apple, particularly if you wanted an unlocked phone, a low-cost plan or the ability to switch carriers without forfeiting credits.
- Best for an AT&T Fiber bundle: The launch-period AT&T Fiber-linked Pro Max offer, if you were already planning to add qualifying Fiber and wireless service before its October 10, 2024 end date.
For personal-finance purposes, the best offer was the one that reduced your total cost—not necessarily the one with the biggest “free iPhone” headline. Compare the plan premium, trade-in value, taxes, fees and exit cost before accepting any carrier promotion.
