Short answer: IonQ is the clearest fit for an investor who prioritizes disclosed revenue momentum and a broad quantum-platform strategy. D-Wave is the more specialized choice if you want exposure to commercial quantum annealing and can tolerate uneven system-sale timing. Rigetti offers the most execution-dependent superconducting-hardware upside, and therefore the highest risk of the three. None is a conventional value stock: all operate in an early market with heavy research spending, uncertain technical milestones and possible future dilution.
The figures below come from each company’s 2025 or 2026 results materials. Share prices, market capitalizations, enterprise values and forward-revenue multiples move constantly, so refresh those measurements immediately before making an investment decision.

These companies are not interchangeable “quantum stocks.” Their hardware architectures, commercial use cases and revenue patterns differ enough that the right choice depends on what risk you are trying to own.

That is a portfolio-fit framework, not a prediction of returns. Technical progress does not guarantee shareholder returns if a stock price already discounts years of growth or if new equity issuance expands the share count.

How the three technical approaches differ
IonQ: trapped-ion systems
IonQ focuses on trapped-ion quantum computing. Individual ions are held in electromagnetic traps and manipulated with precisely controlled laser or optical operations. For an investor, the important distinction is strategic rather than a claim that one architecture will inevitably win: IonQ is building a platform around its own systems, cloud access and related software and services.
IonQ’s 2025 Form 10-K treats D-Wave’s annealing technology as a separate form of quantum computing and lists demand, supply, competition and execution as material risks. That framing matters because IonQ is competing in a market where customers may ultimately use several architectures for different workloads rather than select one universal machine.
Rigetti: superconducting gate model
Rigetti develops superconducting gate-model processors. Its stated full-stack approach spans chip design, fabrication and cloud delivery, with multi-year technology-development partnerships. Superconducting systems require sophisticated fabrication, control electronics and calibration; the investment case therefore depends heavily on whether Rigetti can hit hardware milestones while manufacturing reliably and turning partner work into recurring commercial demand.
Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K describes quantum computing as an early-stage, globally competitive market. It warns that technical progress, partner confidence and continued access to capital are all important to the business. A successful demonstration or purchase order is not the same as a repeatable production business, so investors should track the conversion from development activity to durable revenue.
D-Wave: annealing and gate model
D-Wave provides both quantum-annealing and gate-model systems, software and services. Annealing is designed for certain optimization problems and is commercially distinct from the general-purpose gate-model approach pursued by IonQ and Rigetti. That specialization can create an earlier path to useful customer applications in selected workloads, but it also means the addressable market and growth rate depend on how broadly customers adopt annealing.

D-Wave’s results combine several revenue sources, including systems, software and services. Large system transactions can make one period look unusually strong or weak, which is why bookings and recognized revenue must be examined separately.

IonQ: the momentum and platform-breadth case
IonQ reported $61.9 million of revenue for the fourth quarter of 2025 and $130.0 million for the full year in its February 25, 2026 results release. Chief executive and chairman Niccolo de Masi said the company exceeded the midpoint of its revenue guidance by 55% for the quarter and 20% for the full year. Those are management’s comparisons to its own prior guidance, not an independent forecast.

The range is useful for planning scenarios, but guidance can change with customer timing, system availability, contract structure and market conditions. Treat the midpoint as an assumption to test, not as a promised outcome.
What supports the IonQ thesis
- The company has the largest disclosed revenue base in the cited results.
- Its strategy spans trapped-ion hardware, cloud access, software and services rather than relying on one type of transaction.
- The 2026 forecast gives investors a specific near-term milestone against which to measure execution.
- A platform approach can create several routes to customer adoption if demand develops across different workloads.
What could break the thesis
- Revenue guidance may prove too ambitious if customer deployments slip or demand does not scale.
- Competition from other architectures can pressure pricing, win rates and research spending.
- Strong reported growth may already be reflected in the share price; without a synchronized market-capitalization and revenue comparison, it is impossible to say whether the stock is attractively valued.
- Future capital needs could lead to equity issuance and dilution even if operating revenue rises.
Rigetti: the high-execution superconducting option
Rigetti’s investment case rests less on a large established revenue stream and more on its ability to scale superconducting systems. The company’s full-stack model includes chip design, fabrication and cloud delivery, while multi-year technology-development partnerships can help fund or validate the roadmap. Its FY2025 release said revenue growth was driven partly by Novera on-premises system purchase orders.
A purchase order is evidence of customer interest, but it does not establish a repeatable cadence of similar orders. Investors should ask whether each new system is followed by software, services, upgrades or additional installations, and whether gross economics improve as production scales.

Liquidity and runway
Rigetti reported $589.8 million of cash, cash equivalents and available-for-sale investments at December 31, 2025. That balance can support research, fabrication and commercial activity, but it should not be treated as a guarantee of financial safety. The relevant questions are how quickly cash is consumed, how much is committed to facilities and equipment, and whether additional equity will be needed before the company reaches self-sustaining operations.

Why the upside is unusually execution-sensitive
- Superconducting hardware must progress through demanding design, fabrication, calibration and reliability steps.
- Technical-development partnerships can end, change scope or fail to become production contracts.
- Customer confidence depends on delivered performance, uptime and useful applications, not only published roadmaps.
- A high cash balance can coexist with dilution if the company sells shares to finance expansion.
Rigetti therefore fits an investor who can tolerate a wide range of outcomes and who is prepared to monitor technical and commercial milestones closely. It is not the conservative choice simply because its cash balance is substantial.
D-Wave: the annealing-commercialization case
D-Wave reported $24.6 million of 2025 revenue, up 179% year over year, and $18.7 million of FY2025 bookings. Its chief executive, Dr. Alan Baratz, described 2025 as a transformative year with growth in revenue, bookings, technical milestones and scientific breakthroughs.
The headline growth rate needs context. D-Wave reported $5.9 million of revenue for the first half of 2026, while first-half 2026 bookings were $35.5 million. The prior-year first half included a large system sale, so the revenue comparison is distorted by transaction timing. Bookings can indicate demand before accounting rules allow recognition, but they can also be delayed, canceled or recognized over a different period. Follow both measures and read the contract terms when available.
Liquidity and commercial runway
D-Wave reported $884.5 million of cash and marketable investments at December 31, 2025. That is the largest disclosed liquidity figure among the three in the cited results, but cash does not eliminate the need to prove that annealing demand can scale. A company can have substantial liquidity and still issue stock, spend heavily on research or fail to convert bookings into durable revenue.

Why annealing is a differentiated bet
Annealing targets a narrower class of optimization problems than a general-purpose gate-model machine. That focus may allow earlier commercial use in selected applications, but it can also limit the number of workloads that generate repeat purchases. The central diligence question is whether customers expand from pilot projects to recurring cloud usage, software subscriptions, services and additional systems.
Revenue, bookings and cash: the metrics investors should separate
Recognized revenue
Revenue is the amount recognized under accounting rules during a period. It is the cleanest measure of what has entered the income statement, but a single hardware delivery can make annual or quarterly growth look extreme. Examine the mix of systems, cloud usage, software and services rather than relying on the headline percentage.
Bookings
Bookings represent orders or commitments and can provide an earlier signal of customer demand. They are not cash receipts and are not automatically revenue. Compare bookings with later revenue conversion, cancellation history, delivery schedules and customer concentration. D-Wave’s $35.5 million of first-half 2026 bookings alongside $5.9 million of first-half revenue illustrates why the two metrics should never be combined as though they were interchangeable.
Cash and investments
Cash extends the time available to develop products and pursue customers. It does not measure technical quality, profitability or shareholder value. Calculate a company’s operating cash burn from its latest filings, then consider capital expenditures, contractual commitments and potential equity issuance. A large balance can reduce near-term financing pressure while still increasing dilution risk if management raises capital to accelerate expansion.

The reported operating figures do not tell you whether any share is cheap. Before buying, record the same-day share price, diluted shares outstanding, market capitalization, cash and investments, debt, and the latest twelve-month and forward revenue assumptions for all three companies. Use the same date and definitions so the comparison is meaningful.

For early-stage companies, a forward-revenue multiple can be informative but fragile. IonQ’s 2026 guidance is a management forecast; D-Wave’s revenue can swing with system deliveries; and Rigetti’s value depends heavily on future hardware and partnership conversion. A high multiple may be rational if growth is durable, or dangerous if expectations assume technical breakthroughs that are not yet demonstrated.
Do not rank the stocks on valuation until that synchronized snapshot is complete. A lower multiple alone is not a margin of safety if the underlying revenue is less repeatable or the company must issue substantial equity.
How to choose by investor profile
Choose the IonQ profile if you want disclosed momentum
IonQ is the most defensible starting point for an investor whose priority is a sizable reported revenue base, a stated 2026 growth target and a platform strategy across hardware, cloud and services. You still need to test whether the valuation assumes the full guidance range and several years of continued expansion.
Choose the D-Wave profile if you want annealing exposure
D-Wave is the differentiated choice when the investment thesis specifically depends on commercial quantum annealing. Accept that quarterly and annual revenue may be volatile, that bookings can lead revenue by a substantial period and that the long-term market for annealing remains an execution question.
Choose the Rigetti profile only if you can absorb high execution risk
Rigetti suits a speculative allocation built around superconducting scaling, technical milestones and partnership conversion. Its cash position provides resources, not certainty. The thesis fails if the company cannot deliver reliable systems, win repeat orders or finance the roadmap without excessive dilution.
Use a basket only when you want architecture diversification
Owning more than one can reduce the risk that a single architecture falls behind, but it does not remove sector risk. All three depend on customer adoption, research progress, capital markets and a still-developing quantum-computing ecosystem. A basket should be sized as a speculative technology position rather than a substitute for diversified core holdings.
A practical due-diligence checklist before purchase
- Refresh market data. On one date, capture each stock’s price, diluted share count, market capitalization, cash, investments and debt.
- Reconcile revenue. Identify how much came from systems, cloud usage, software and services, and note whether a single customer or delivery drove the period.
- Track bookings to revenue. For D-Wave in particular, compare bookings with subsequent recognized revenue and delivery timing.
- Read the latest risk factors. Look for changes in demand, supply-chain access, competition, customer concentration, partner confidence and regulatory or financing exposure.
- Measure cash burn. Use operating cash flow and capital expenditures to estimate runway, then model a case in which new equity is issued.
- Set technical milestones. Define in advance which demonstrated performance, system availability, customer deployments or repeat orders would confirm or weaken your thesis.
- Stress-test the valuation. Model slower growth, delayed system deliveries and a larger share count instead of relying only on management’s outlook.
- Size the position for failure. These are speculative equities; limit the allocation so a technical setback, financing round or sharp repricing cannot damage your overall plan.
Risks common to all three stocks
- Technology risk: useful, scalable quantum systems may take longer or cost more to develop than expected.
- Commercial risk: pilots and research contracts may not become recurring production revenue.
- Architecture risk: a competing approach could deliver better economics for the workloads customers care about.
- Concentration risk: one large customer or system sale can materially affect reported results.
- Financing and dilution risk: continued research and manufacturing investment may require selling additional shares.
- Valuation risk: enthusiasm for quantum computing can push prices far ahead of current revenue and cash generation.
- Timing risk: bookings, installations and accounting recognition can occur in different periods, making quarter-to-quarter comparisons noisy.
Bottom-line portfolio fit
For most investors comparing only these three businesses, IonQ offers the strongest combination of disclosed revenue momentum and platform breadth, provided its valuation does not already assume flawless execution. D-Wave is the more focused annealing bet: its 2025 growth and 2026 bookings are meaningful, but system-sale timing makes revenue uneven. Rigetti is the highest-risk option, with potentially significant superconducting upside if its hardware roadmap and partnerships scale, but with the greatest dependence on technical delivery, repeat orders and future financing.

Make the final choice only after updating valuation and dilution data on the same date. Treat any position as speculative and keep it proportionate to the possibility that the quantum-computing market develops more slowly, or along a different architectural path, than investors currently expect.
