For an India-based investor, neither route is automatically better. An Indian fund of funds (FoF) or feeder scheme gives you units in an Indian mutual-fund scheme that invests in an overseas fund, ETF or other permitted foreign securities. A direct route gives you the overseas fund or ETF units themselves through an eligible foreign-investment account or platform. The practical choice depends on the exposure you need, total cost, availability, tax position, currency, liquidity and the administration you are prepared to handle.

This comparison assumes an investor who is resident in India or otherwise using an India-linked investment route. Your tax residence, citizenship, the foreign market, the fund domicile and the route used can change the answer. Read the current scheme and provider documents before investing; older scheme documents and generic descriptions of “international funds” are not enough.

Start with the ownership difference

The label “international fund” does not tell you what you own. Look through the legal structure and the current portfolio.

Indian FoF or feeder scheme

You buy units of a domestic Indian mutual-fund scheme. The scheme may buy units of an overseas mutual fund or ETF, or it may hold other permitted foreign securities. Your statement, purchase, redemption and investor relationship are with the Indian scheme and its asset-management company. The foreign exposure is delivered through the scheme’s holdings, not through a foreign account in your name.

A genuine feeder normally identifies the underlying vehicle and its investment mandate. Some schemes described as international can instead hold a mix of foreign securities, derivatives or domestic instruments. Read the scheme’s portfolio disclosure, benchmark, stated asset allocation and the name of any underlying fund rather than relying on the marketing label.

Direct overseas fund or ETF

You hold units or shares of the foreign vehicle through an eligible account, broker or investment platform. The overseas fund’s prospectus, benchmark, domicile, dealing rules and custody arrangements apply directly to you. Funding may involve converting Indian rupees into a foreign currency and complying with the rules for the route and investor category you use.

These are different ownership and administration structures. A domestic scheme is not merely a cheaper wrapper around a direct account, and a direct holding is not automatically a better or more transparent version of a feeder.

Compare like-for-like exposure, not the word “international”

Before comparing expense ratios or convenience, define the exposure you are trying to obtain. A US large-cap portfolio, a developed-markets portfolio, a single-country fund and a global fund excluding one country can have very different risks even when all are marketed as international.

Use the benchmark as the first filter

Record the benchmark named in each vehicle’s current factsheet or prospectus. Then check whether the portfolio is intended to track it, replicate it physically, sample it or actively deviate from it. A domestic feeder and a direct fund are comparable only when their benchmarks and mandates are close enough for an “apples-to-apples” decision.

Check countries, sectors and concentration

  • List the countries and regions represented and their approximate weights.
  • Identify the largest sectors and the largest individual positions.
  • Note whether the vehicle is concentrated in one country, region, industry or currency.
  • Check whether the overseas holdings overlap with Indian equity funds or other international funds you already own.
  • Confirm whether the portfolio includes cash, derivatives or securities outside the headline mandate.

Current portfolio disclosures matter because country and sector weights change. A fund that was broadly diversified at launch can become more concentrated as markets move or the manager changes the portfolio.

Understand currency exposure

Your return in Indian rupees combines the foreign asset’s performance with movements in the relevant currency against the rupee, after costs and taxes. Determine whether the vehicle is unhedged, partially hedged or hedged, and identify the currency used for subscriptions and redemptions. Do not assume that two funds with the same country exposure create the same rupee outcome if their hedging or share-class currencies differ.

Side-by-side comparison

Comparison axis Indian FoF or feeder scheme Direct overseas fund or ETF
Legal holding Units of a domestic Indian mutual-fund scheme; the underlying portfolio determines whether it is a feeder or holds other foreign securities. Units or shares of an overseas fund or ETF held through an eligible account or investment route.
Exposure Read the Indian scheme’s benchmark, portfolio and, where disclosed, the underlying fund’s name and mandate. Read the overseas vehicle’s prospectus, benchmark, holdings, domicile and share-class details.
Costs Domestic scheme expenses plus underlying overseas-fund expenses where applicable; use current scheme disclosures. Underlying fund expense plus current platform, custody, trading, remittance and currency-conversion costs.
Availability Depends on the individual scheme and can be affected by overseas-investment limits or a temporary suspension of deployment. Depends on investor eligibility, the route’s rules and the platform or market access available to that investor.
Tax and reporting Confirm the current treatment for your status and the specific Indian scheme. Confirm treatment for the overseas vehicle and domicile, your investor status and any required foreign-asset reporting.
Administration Domestic purchase, redemption and statements, while you still need to verify taxation, liquidity and subscription status. Account opening, foreign-currency funding, dealing, statements, redemptions and any additional reporting; exact tasks vary by provider and route.
Key documents Scheme Information Document (SID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM), factsheet, portfolio disclosure, total-expense-ratio disclosure and asset-manager notices. Prospectus or KID, factsheet, broker fee schedule, custody terms, tax forms and the relevant official rules.

Add up the full cost

Comparing only the number displayed as an expense ratio can reverse the apparent winner. Build an all-in cost estimate for the amount, currency and holding period you actually expect to use.

Costs inside an Indian FoF

  • Domestic scheme expenses: the Indian scheme’s ongoing operating and management expenses disclosed in its current documents.
  • Underlying vehicle expenses: the overseas mutual fund or ETF may charge its own expense ratio. Include it where the Indian scheme invests in that vehicle.
  • Transaction and execution effects: the scheme can incur dealing, foreign-exchange and other portfolio costs that show up through performance rather than as a separate bill to you.
  • Entry, exit and distribution charges: verify the scheme’s current rules for any applicable loads or transaction charges.

An AMFI-hosted scheme document describes the overseas fund’s expenses together with domestic scheme expenses as subject to a regulatory ceiling in the cited context. That document and the circulars it references can become stale, so use the latest SID, factsheet and regulatory disclosures for any present-day number. Do not treat one scheme document as a universal expense limit for every international scheme.

Costs in a direct holding

  • Underlying fund or ETF expense: taken from the vehicle’s assets and shown in its current prospectus or factsheet.
  • Platform and custody charges: account, custody, data or maintenance fees, if the provider charges them.
  • Trading costs: commissions, bid-ask spreads and any market or exchange charges when you buy or sell.
  • Currency conversion: the provider’s spread or fee when rupees are converted to the dealing currency and when proceeds are converted back.
  • Remittance and payment costs: bank or payment-provider charges and any route-specific costs.
  • Tax and filing costs: possible tax on income or gains and the cost of obtaining professional help or preparing additional records.

Ask the provider for a schedule that applies to your account type and transaction size. A low-cost foreign ETF can still be expensive for a small, infrequent investor if fixed conversion, remittance or custody charges are large relative to the contribution.

A practical cost worksheet

  1. Write down the domestic scheme expense and the underlying fund expense separately for an FoF.
  2. For a direct holding, record the vehicle expense, platform and custody charges, expected trading costs and the currency-conversion spread.
  3. Estimate the number and size of contributions, redemptions and currency conversions each year.
  4. Include one-off account-opening or transfer charges and recurring statement or reporting costs.
  5. Compare the total rupee cost for the same target exposure and holding period, rather than comparing percentages from different amounts.

The evidence available does not establish a universal performance or “after-cost” winner. The result depends on the actual products, transaction pattern, exchange rates and taxes that apply to you.

Availability of an Indian scheme

An Indian FoF’s ability to invest overseas can be constrained by regulatory and scheme-level limits. A scheme information document filed in February 2025 describes a possible temporary suspension of deployment when overseas limits are exhausted or close to exhaustion. Treat that as an example of a scheme term, not a current industry-wide limit or proof that every scheme is open or closed.

Before placing an order, read the asset manager’s latest notice and verify whether fresh subscriptions, systematic plans, switches and redemptions are currently accepted. A scheme can continue to allow redemptions while limiting new money, or it can change the way new subscriptions are processed.

Availability of a direct route

Direct access depends on your eligibility, the foreign market, the provider’s onboarding rules and the investment route available to your investor category. The RBI material surfaced for this comparison contains language allowing a resident individual to invest in units or other instruments issued by an investment fund or vehicle set up in an International Financial Services Centre as overseas portfolio investment, subject to applicable limits. That narrow wording does not settle every country, provider, fund, account type or operational requirement.

Confirm the route before transferring money: who is the regulated intermediary, where the assets are custodied, which markets and instruments are permitted, what funding method is accepted and what records you receive.

Liquidity is more than a “daily NAV” label

For an Indian scheme, check the cut-off time, valuation point, redemption settlement and any exit-load period. For a direct fund or ETF, check the foreign market’s trading hours, holidays, time-zone differences, dealing frequency, settlement cycle, bid-ask spread and the process for transferring proceeds back to India. An ETF may trade throughout an exchange session while an overseas mutual fund may accept orders only at a calculated net asset value and on specified dealing days.

Treat tax and reporting as case-specific

Tax treatment depends on your tax residence, citizenship, account and the legal form and domicile of the vehicle. It can also differ between an Indian scheme unit and a foreign fund or ETF, and between income, redemption gains and currency movements. Obtain current advice for your facts before investing or selling.

Why section 115AB is not a general answer

The Income Tax Department page for section 115AB, in the Act year 2026 material, is titled “Tax on income from units purchased in foreign currency or capital gains arising from their transfer.” Its definitions concern an “overseas financial organisation” and specified units acquired in foreign currency. Those defined provisions do not, by themselves, answer the tax position of every Indian retail investor using an FoF or a direct overseas fund.

Do not quote section 115AB as a blanket retail rule. Confirm the current provisions that apply to your investor status, the fund domicile, the type of income, the acquisition currency and the reporting forms required.

Records you should preserve

  • Contract notes, account statements and fund statements for every purchase and sale.
  • Exchange rates or conversion records used for each transaction.
  • Dividend or distribution statements and any foreign tax withheld.
  • Statements showing fees, remittances and transfers between accounts.
  • Annual tax reports supplied by the Indian scheme, platform or foreign fund.

An overseas account can create additional information-reporting obligations even when the investment is small. An Indian FoF may provide more familiar domestic statements, but that convenience does not remove the need to check the tax treatment of the scheme and your own status.

Understand the regulatory structure behind an Indian feeder

SEBI’s November 4, 2024 circular on Indian mutual-fund investments in overseas mutual funds or unit trusts that have exposure to Indian securities sets conditions for that stated overseas-fund situation. The conditions include pooled assets, pari-passu or pro-rata rights, an independent investment manager, public portfolio disclosure at least quarterly and no advisory agreement between the Indian scheme and the underlying overseas fund.

These requirements address the specified Indian-mutual-fund investment structure. They should not be read as rules governing every direct retail purchase of a foreign fund. A direct investor must examine the foreign vehicle’s own prospectus, regulator, custodian and investor-protection framework.

Compare administration and investor protection

What an Indian scheme can simplify

  • Application, redemption and systematic-investment processes in familiar Indian channels.
  • Statements and portfolio disclosures in domestic formats.
  • Indian-currency dealing for the scheme transaction.
  • A single domestic point of contact for scheme servicing and complaints.

Those features do not guarantee that every feeder is simple. You still need to track scheme notices, overseas deployment restrictions, the underlying fund, tax records and the timing of redemptions.

What a direct account adds

  • Foreign-currency funding and conversion decisions.
  • Different dealing hours, holidays and settlement conventions.
  • Separate statements from the platform, custodian and fund provider.
  • Potentially more detailed foreign-asset and tax records.
  • Dependence on the provider’s continued market access, support and transfer process.

Ask what happens if the provider stops accepting new customers, a fund closes to subscriptions, a share class is merged or you need to move the assets to another custodian. The answer should cover ownership records, transferability, redemption and access to historical statements.

A step-by-step decision process

  1. Define the target exposure. Write the countries, benchmark, sectors, concentration, currency and desired hedging policy. State whether you want a broad developed-markets allocation, a single-country position or a specific regional sleeve.
  2. List existing overlap. Map the foreign holdings already embedded in your Indian equity funds and other international schemes so you do not mistake a second label for new diversification.
  3. Shortlist comparable vehicles. Use current SIDs and factsheets for Indian schemes and current prospectuses or KIDs for direct funds. Record the legal vehicle, domicile, benchmark, portfolio and dealing frequency.
  4. Verify the underlying holdings. For an FoF, identify the overseas fund or ETF and check whether the Indian scheme can hold other securities. For a direct route, check the foreign vehicle’s complete mandate and share class.
  5. Build the all-in cost estimate. Include both layers of fund expenses where relevant, then add platform, custody, trading, conversion, remittance and expected reporting costs.
  6. Confirm access. Check eligibility, current subscription status, overseas limits, funding method, dealing hours, settlement, redemption and transfer rules. Obtain written confirmation where a provider’s public schedule is unclear.
  7. Map tax and reporting. Give the specific vehicle, domicile, investor status and transaction pattern to a qualified tax professional. Do not rely on a generic section 115AB summary or a forum answer.
  8. Choose the administration you can maintain. Decide whether domestic servicing or direct control is more valuable after considering statements, currency work, record keeping and provider dependence.
  9. Set a monitoring rule. Review the benchmark, portfolio, costs, subscription notices and tax documents at a defined interval. Reassess when the mandate, underlying fund, fee schedule or access conditions change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every international scheme is a feeder

Some schemes hold foreign securities directly or combine several structures. Read the portfolio and legal documents to identify what the scheme actually owns.

Comparing unlike benchmarks

A US large-cap fund and a developed-markets fund are not substitutes. Match countries, sectors, concentration and currency before comparing returns or fees.

Using only the visible expense ratio

An FoF can have domestic and underlying expenses. A direct account can add conversion, custody, platform and remittance charges. Put every recurring and transaction cost in one worksheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating an old limit as current law

Numeric limits in scheme documents are date- and scheme-specific. Recheck the operative SEBI and RBI material and the asset manager’s current notice before acting.

Confusing an Indian scheme’s overseas investment with personal remittance

The scheme’s regulatory permissions, your account route, funding rules, fees and investor protections are different questions. Verify each one separately.

Assuming direct means cheaper or an FoF means easier

Neither proposition is universal. Small recurring contributions can make fixed conversion costs material, while an FoF can add a second layer of expenses or face deployment constraints. Measure the actual route and amount you will use.

Relying on a broad tax slogan

Residence, citizenship, domicile, currency, holding form and income type can change the result. Get advice tied to the specific vehicle and transaction.

Documents to collect before investing

For an Indian FoF or feeder

  • Current SID and KIM.
  • Latest factsheet and portfolio disclosure.
  • Total-expense-ratio and load disclosures.
  • Name and documents for the underlying overseas fund or ETF, where disclosed.
  • Asset-manager notices on subscriptions, overseas deployment and redemptions.
  • Current tax statements and service procedures.

For a direct overseas fund or ETF

  • Current prospectus or KID and factsheet.
  • Benchmark, holdings, domicile, share class and currency-hedging details.
  • Broker or platform fee schedule, custody terms and transfer rules.
  • Trading, settlement, redemption and dealing-calendar information.
  • Funding, conversion and remittance charges for your account.
  • Tax forms, withholding statements and foreign-asset reporting information.

How to reach a defensible choice

Choose the route that delivers the exposure you want at a total cost and operating burden you can sustain. An Indian FoF can fit an investor who values domestic servicing and statements, provided the scheme’s underlying exposure, costs and current access are acceptable. A direct overseas fund or ETF can fit an investor who is eligible for the route, understands foreign-currency funding and can maintain the additional records and reporting.

Make the decision from current documents, not from the word “international,” an old limit, a single expense ratio or a claim that one structure is always more tax-efficient. The right comparison is the specific Indian scheme against the specific overseas vehicle, for your country exposure, contribution pattern, time horizon and tax situation.
