The ownership change brings new capital to the cloud-communications provider, but CEO Michael Gold says Intermedia will preserve its partner-first strategy rather than compete directly with resellers.
That is reassuring for MSPs, telecommunications resellers, Microsoft partners and other channel businesses—but it remains a management commitment, not a permanent guarantee that pricing, incentives, support policies or partner economics cannot change.

The short answer
26North has replaced Madison Dearborn Partners as Intermedia’s owner. Intermedia says its leadership team and reseller-first go-to-market model will remain in place, including the Customer Ownership Reseller (CORE) model.

Gold told CRN that 94% of Intermedia’s sales came through partners and that the company did not intend to use the deal to compete directly with them. Intermedia has more than 7,500 partners serving more than 150,000 business customers, according to its acquisition announcement.
What happened to Intermedia
Intermedia was acquired from its founder by Oak Hill Capital in 2011 and was later owned by Madison Dearborn Partners. Intermedia announced 26North’s agreement to acquire the company on March 31, 2026. The transaction was completed on May 28, 2026, according to the company’s closing announcement.
- New owner: 26North Partners LP.
- Former owner: Funds managed by Madison Dearborn Partners.
- Leadership: Gold said the existing leadership team would remain in place.
- Purchase price: Not disclosed in the cited coverage.
The distinction between ownership and operating strategy matters. A private-equity owner can provide capital and strategic direction without immediately changing the company’s customer-facing model. At the same time, private-equity ownership commonly brings pressure for faster growth, stronger margins, cost discipline and a larger exit value. Those incentives are why channel partners are watching the post-close execution closely.

Why 26North wanted the company
Gold described several themes that attracted 26North:
- Businesses are migrating from legacy PBX systems to cloud communications.
- Artificial intelligence is becoming part of meetings, voice, contact centers and productivity software.
- Intermedia already has a reseller-led distribution system.
- The existing partner base provides a route to sell additional services.
- Vertical-market expansion and selective consolidation could create further growth opportunities.
These are investment priorities, not verified outcomes. The closing announcement says the next phase will emphasize AI innovation, partner enablement, vertical capabilities, international expansion and potential complementary acquisitions. It does not provide a detailed capital-allocation plan or announce a specific acquisition pipeline.
How Intermedia’s partner model works
“Partner-first” is not one uniform commercial arrangement. Intermedia offers several models that assign billing, support, branding and customer ownership differently. The company’s reseller program describes the available options.
Rank #2
CORE: Customer Ownership Reseller
Under CORE, the partner can own the customer relationship, billing, packaging, support and expansion activity. Intermedia supplies and operates the underlying communications platform, while the reseller can brand and package the service.

It also creates more responsibility: the partner may need strong provisioning, service-desk, escalation, compliance and billing capabilities.
Co-Op
In the Co-Op model, the partner controls bundling and support while Intermedia handles billing and customer agreements. This can reduce administrative overhead for a reseller that wants a managed-services relationship without owning every operational function. Intermedia explains the model in its Co-Op overview.
Advisor
With an Advisor arrangement, Intermedia handles billing and support while the partner remains involved in sales and the customer relationship. This may suit an advisor or IT consultant that wants to recommend communications services without building a telecom support operation.
Service Provider
The Service Provider model allows a partner to retain customer ownership and offer white-labeled services under a different operational structure. Details should be confirmed directly in the partner agreement and applicable service-provider materials.
The practical issue is not simply whether Intermedia has a channel program. It is who controls the customer, who invoices the customer, who provides first-line support, who owns renewals and who receives the economic benefit from expansion.
What “fresh capital” could fund
Based on management’s statements, the new investment could support:
- AI features and AI-enabled workflows.
- Product development and platform integration.
- Partner training, enablement and migration tools.
- Vertical-specific products and integrations.
- International expansion.
- Selective acquisitions that add technology, customers or channel-friendly products.
- Migration programs for businesses leaving aging communications platforms.
Intermedia already markets AI meeting summaries, call recaps, AI receptionist and virtual-agent functions, support-agent assistance and interaction insights. Its Unite product page describes AI capabilities across meetings, voice, contact center and productivity products.
Those labels do not establish accuracy, autonomy, regulatory suitability or superiority over competing products. Partners serving regulated industries should validate data handling, administrator controls, retention, human-review requirements and the reliability of each workflow before promising a customer a particular outcome.

Microsoft Teams is strategically important because many businesses already use it as their collaboration interface. Intermedia positions its Teams offering as a way for partners to add PBX functionality, telephony, SMS and contact-center capabilities without relying solely on Microsoft’s native communications stack.
Intermedia says its advertised Teams configuration embeds business calling into Teams and does not require an additional Microsoft Teams Phone license. That statement should be read narrowly: buyers still need to verify the complete Microsoft 365 and Teams licensing environment, calling geography, number-porting requirements, compliance obligations and deployment architecture. Details are available on the Teams phone integration page.
Intermedia also says its Teams Contact Center integration does not use Direct Routing and that users can access the service through a browser if Teams is unavailable. Its Contact Center for Teams page provides the company’s technical description.
Rank #4
For an MSP, the opportunity is differentiation: Teams can remain the familiar user interface while the partner adds telephony, contact-center, CRM and support services. That opportunity is smaller for organizations that do not use Teams or that require a different contact-center architecture.

Gold specifically identified estates associated with Avaya, Mitel, NEC, BroadSoft by Cisco and Metaswitch as potential migration opportunities. Replacing a legacy PBX is more complicated than moving users to a new monthly subscription.
A migration plan should address:
- Telephone-number porting and temporary coexistence.
- Emergency calling and location management.
- Analog devices, fax machines, alarms, elevators, paging systems and door phones.
- Auto attendants, call queues, hunt groups and business-hours rules.
- Contact-center recordings, reporting and retention.
- CRM and line-of-business integrations.
- Compliance retention and access controls.
- User training and device replacement.
- First-line support and escalation responsibilities.
Partners should request a written migration scope. A low monthly seat price does not capture discovery, porting, implementation, hardware, training or ongoing support costs.

1. Pricing, rebates and discounts
Public retail pricing does not reveal reseller wholesale costs or margins. Obtain written terms covering discounts, rebates, volume tiers, renewals, price increases and promotional funding.
2. Direct-sales behavior
Gold’s pledge is that Intermedia will not compete directly with partners. Partners should monitor how large enterprise accounts, inbound leads, renewals and strategic accounts are assigned, and whether exceptions develop.
3. Support ownership
Confirm who handles provisioning, service incidents, customer communications and escalations under each model. CORE and service-provider arrangements offer more control but can also shift more operational burden to the partner.
4. Product-roadmap concentration
AI, Teams, contact center and vertical solutions may receive more investment. That can be positive, but partners should also ask whether mature products will continue receiving security updates, integrations and support.
5. Acquisition integration
Future acquisitions could add useful capabilities, but they could also create overlapping products, roadmap changes, migration requirements or partner-program consolidation. “Potential acquisitions” is not the same as an announced deal.
6. Contract and geographic terms
Intermedia says listed partner services are available to partners located in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Europe. Availability, regulatory requirements and commercial terms may differ elsewhere. Review the applicable partner-program legal terms and contract.
What the deal means for end customers
Customers evaluating an Intermedia deployment should compare total cost and accountability, not just per-user pricing. Key questions include:
- Who is the contracting party: Intermedia or the reseller?
- Who owns billing, support and renewal decisions?
- What are the implementation, porting and hardware costs?
- Which countries and calling destinations are supported?
- How are recordings, transcripts and AI-generated summaries retained and accessed?
- Which CRM and business applications integrate with the service?
- What are the service-level commitments and exit terms?
- How can data and telephone numbers be recovered if the customer changes providers?
Date-specific pricing context
Intermedia’s public customer pricing observed on August 18, 2026 showed Unite Pro at $27.99 per user per month and Unite Enterprise at $32.99. Unite for Teams showed Teams Pro at $22.99 and Teams Enterprise at $28.99 per user per month. The Contact Center pricing page displayed “Get Quote.”
These are public retail prices observed on that date, not reseller economics. Partner rates, rebates, discounts, negotiated service levels, usage charges and plan limitations must be confirmed in a partner proposal or contract.
The key risk: continuity is promised, not guaranteed
The evidence currently supports a picture of continuity plus acceleration. Ownership changed, but Intermedia continues to emphasize customer ownership, reseller distribution and partner-led growth. At the same time, the company is signaling greater ambition in AI, Teams, vertical markets, international expansion and possible M&A.

That combination could benefit partners if new capital produces better products, migration tools and enablement without weakening channel economics. It could hurt them if growth targets eventually lead to direct-sales exceptions, reduced discounts, support changes or acquisitions that confuse the portfolio.
For now, “no channel disruption” should be treated as a clearly stated management commitment. Partners should measure whether it remains true through pricing, account ownership, support performance, roadmap decisions and contract changes—not assume that private-equity ownership makes current terms permanent.
