Indian cash transaction limits: Section 269ST, cash receipts and penalties explained

India’s main cash-receipt limit under Section 269ST is ₹2,00,000 or more. A person must not receive that amount through cash or another non-permitted mode when the receipt is tested either (1) in aggregate from one person in one day, (2) for a single transaction, or (3) for transactions connected with one event or occasion from one person. Permitted alternatives include an account-payee cheque, account-payee bank draft, electronic clearing system through a bank account, or another electronic mode prescribed under the tax rules. A breach can trigger a Section 271DA penalty equal to the amount received, although the law allows relief where the recipient proves good and sufficient reasons.

What is the cash transaction limit in India?

The commonly quoted “₹2 lakh cash limit” is shorthand for Section 269ST of the Income-tax Act. The statutory wording is stricter: “No person shall receive an amount of two lakh rupees or more” except through specified banking or electronic channels. The trigger is therefore reached at exactly ₹2,00,000; it is not limited to amounts above ₹2,00,000.

Section 269ST is a receipt-side rule. It regulates the person who receives the money, rather than automatically penalising the person who pays it. The rule can apply to a business, professional, individual or other recipient unless a statutory exception covers the receipt.

How Section 269ST tests a receipt

The ₹2 lakh threshold is checked independently under three tests. Crossing any one of them can make the receipt prohibited if the payment was made through cash or another mode that is not permitted.

Test What is aggregated Illustration
Same person, same day All receipts from one person during one day ₹1,20,000 in the morning plus ₹90,000 later the same day totals ₹2,10,000.
Single transaction The total consideration for one transaction A single cash invoice of ₹2,00,000 reaches the threshold even if no other amount is received that day.
One event or occasion Receipts from one person for transactions connected with one event or occasion Several instalments from one client for one wedding or conference can be considered together.

These are separate statutory limbs. A receipt that stays below ₹2 lakh on one test can still fail another. For example, dividing one commercial arrangement into multiple invoices does not by itself remove the single-transaction or event-or-occasion connection.

Same person in one day

For the daily-person test, add the receipts received from the same payer during that day. The example above—₹1,20,000 followed by ₹90,000—produces an aggregate of ₹2,10,000. Treating the payments as separate cash collections does not change the daily total.

The statutory wording is “in aggregate from a person in a day.” It is not a general daily ceiling on all cash received from all customers combined. The relevant question is whether the amount from a particular person reaches ₹2 lakh or more that day.

Single transaction

A single transaction can cross the limit on its own. A recipient cannot avoid Section 269ST merely because the customer pays one invoice in several instalments if those instalments relate to one transaction and the total amount is ₹2 lakh or more. The facts of the contract, invoice and payment schedule matter.

One event or occasion

The event-or-occasion limb covers connected payments from one person for a common occasion. The practical examples in the tax guidance include a wedding or conference, but the wording is not restricted to those examples. If multiple cash instalments are tied to one event or occasion and the connected amount reaches ₹2 lakh, the receipt can fall within Section 269ST even where each instalment is smaller.

Which payment modes are allowed?

Section 269ST requires the recipient to use one of the modes specified in the provision when the amount reaches the threshold. The listed alternatives are:

  • An account-payee cheque.
  • An account-payee bank draft.
  • An electronic clearing system through a bank account.
  • Another electronic mode prescribed under the applicable rules.

The provision is about the mode in which the money is received. A transaction may be commercially genuine and properly invoiced yet still create a Section 269ST problem if the threshold is met through cash or another impermissible mode. Keep evidence of the permitted instrument or electronic transfer with the underlying invoice and customer record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phrase “another prescribed electronic mode” depends on the rules and notifications in force for the relevant period. Do not assume that every digital payment method automatically qualifies without checking the applicable prescription for the assessment year and transaction date.

Can I receive ₹2 lakh in cash?

As a general rule, no: receiving ₹2,00,000 or more in cash is prohibited when one of Section 269ST’s three tests is met and no exception applies. The answer is not changed by calling the amount an advance, deposit, instalment or part-payment if the underlying facts still connect it to one transaction or one event.

Amounts below ₹2 lakh are not automatically safe in every pattern. Several sub-threshold receipts from the same person can aggregate to ₹2 lakh or more in one day, or can be connected to one transaction or event. Conversely, the daily-person test is not a single universal cap on all receipts from unrelated persons: each payer is assessed separately under that limb.

Examples of the Section 269ST cash receipt limit

Scenario Amount and mode Likely result under the stated facts
Two payments from one customer on one day ₹1,20,000 cash plus ₹90,000 cash ₹2,10,000 aggregate from one person in one day; the daily-person test is crossed.
One invoice One cash receipt of exactly ₹2,00,000 The statutory threshold is reached at ₹2,00,000; the single-transaction test is crossed.
Connected event payments Several cash instalments below ₹2,00,000 each for one wedding or conference The event-or-occasion test can aggregate the connected receipts from that person.
Split invoicing One charge divided into multiple invoices or instalments Splitting alone does not prevent the single-transaction or event-or-occasion tests from applying.
Permitted banking mode ₹2,00,000 or more received through an account-payee cheque or another mode listed in Section 269ST The mode requirement is met, subject to the facts and any other applicable tax rule.

These examples explain how the statutory tests operate; they are not a determination of liability in a particular dispute. Contracts, payer identity, timing, purpose and the applicable exception can change the analysis.

What is the ₹2 lakh cash penalty?

Section 271DA provides a penalty equal to the amount of the prohibited receipt. In practical terms, that is a 100% penalty on the amount received in contravention. If a receipt of ₹2,10,000 is found to violate Section 269ST, the statutory penalty measure is ₹2,10,000—not merely the amount above ₹2 lakh.

The penalty is directed at the recipient. Section 271DA does not automatically impose this penalty on the payer simply because the payer handed over cash. The payer may have separate tax or compliance issues under other provisions, but those are distinct questions.

Good and sufficient reasons

The penalty provision contains a proviso allowing relief where the recipient proves that there were good and sufficient reasons for the contravention. This is not an automatic exemption for cash-flow problems, convenience or a preference for cash. A recipient seeking to rely on the proviso would need to establish the facts and supporting evidence for the specific circumstances.

Who imposes the penalty now?

For penalties imposed on or after 1 April 2025, the amended Act places the imposing authority with the Assessing Officer. The applicable assessment year, the date of the alleged receipt and the date of penalty proceedings should be checked against the version of the Act and Finance Act amendments in force for the case.

Exceptions and transactions outside Section 269ST

The section text excludes certain recipients and categories. The stated exclusions include:

  • Receipts by the Government.
  • Receipts by a banking company.
  • Receipts by a post-office savings bank.
  • Receipts by a co-operative bank.
  • Transactions of the nature referred to in Section 269SS.
  • Any other persons, classes of persons or receipts notified by the Central Government.

An exception must match the actual recipient and transaction. A business should not assume that being regulated, having a bank account or issuing an invoice is enough. If relying on a notified category, verify the notification and its conditions for the relevant date.

Section 269ST versus Sections 269SS and 269T

These provisions are often confused because all concern large cash dealings, but they regulate different actions.

Provision What it regulates Why the distinction matters
Section 269ST Receiving ₹2,00,000 or more through cash or another impermissible mode, tested by person/day, single transaction, or event/occasion This is the cash-receipt rule discussed here; Section 271DA sets the equal-to-receipt penalty.
Section 269SS Acceptance of loans, deposits and specified sums It has its own scope, thresholds and penalty provisions; a transaction covered by 269SS is excluded from Section 269ST’s text.
Section 269T Repayment of loans, deposits and specified advances Repayment is a different act from receipt of sales or service consideration and is governed separately.

Classifying a payment correctly is essential. A customer’s payment for goods, a refundable deposit, a loan and repayment of a loan are not interchangeable labels. The relevant provision depends on the legal and commercial nature of the amount.

How businesses can prevent a Section 269ST breach

  1. Identify the payer. Maintain a customer or counterparty record that allows receipts from the same person to be recognised across the day.
  2. Aggregate before accepting payment. Check the day’s cumulative amount, not just the value of the current invoice or instalment.
  3. Link related receipts. Flag instalments, advances and invoices connected with one contract, wedding, conference or other event.
  4. Offer a permitted mode early. Provide account-payee cheque, account-payee bank draft, electronic clearing through a bank account or another prescribed electronic option before the customer attempts a large cash payment.
  5. Retain evidence. Store invoices, agreements, receipts, bank statements and electronic transaction records together so the mode, payer, date and purpose can be demonstrated.
  6. Review exceptions. If the recipient is Government, a bank, a post-office savings bank, a co-operative bank or another notified category, document the exact basis for the exclusion.
  7. Escalate unusual cases. Obtain professional tax advice where a payment is split, relates to an event, combines advance and final settlement, or could be characterised as a loan or deposit.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“It is exactly ₹2 lakh, so the limit is not crossed.”

Incorrect. The statutory trigger is ₹2,00,000 or more. Exactly ₹2 lakh is within the restriction unless an allowed mode or exception applies.

“Each instalment is under ₹2 lakh, so every instalment is safe.”

Not necessarily. The one-transaction and event-or-occasion tests can connect smaller instalments. Analyse the commercial arrangement, not only the individual receipt sizes.

“The customer is responsible because the customer paid cash.”

Section 271DA’s stated penalty falls on the person who received the prohibited amount. The recipient should design controls that stop an impermissible receipt before it is accepted.

“Different invoices create different transactions automatically.”

Invoice numbering alone does not settle the statutory question. If the invoices represent one connected charge or one event, the underlying facts can still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Any digital payment is automatically approved.”

The section lists electronic clearing through a bank account and other electronic modes prescribed under the rules. Confirm that the specific channel qualifies for the relevant period instead of relying on the word “digital.”

What to check before accepting a large payment

  • Is the amount ₹2,00,000 or more?
  • Have receipts from this person already reached the threshold today?
  • Is the payment part of one transaction, contract or event or occasion?
  • Is the proposed mode an account-payee cheque, account-payee bank draft, electronic clearing system through a bank account or another prescribed electronic mode?
  • Does a statutory exclusion apply to the recipient or transaction?
  • Could Sections 269SS or 269T apply instead because the amount is a loan, deposit or specified advance?
  • Can the payer, date, purpose and mode be proved from contemporaneous records?

Keeping the rule current

Tax law can change through Finance Acts, rules and Central Government notifications. The figures and authority described here reflect the Income-tax Department material current to 16 October 2026, including the amendment effective from 1 April 2025. Before relying on an exception, an electronic mode or a penalty procedure in a live matter, confirm the applicable assessment year and the law in force on the transaction and penalty dates.
