Use a revised return when the mistake is in the return you filed. Use a rectification request when your return has been processed and the Income Tax Department’s intimation or order contains an apparent error, such as a correctly reported tax credit or deduction that processing did not consider. Rectification is not a general second chance to rewrite your return.
Before choosing, identify the assessment year (AY) or tax year, whether processing is complete, what your original return says, and what the intimation or order says. The Income Tax Department’s current portal guidance and the particular notice or order control your case.

The quickest way to choose
Match the problem to the document that is wrong. If your submitted return contains the error, correct the return through a revision, provided the applicable revision window is still open. If the return was accurate but the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) or another authority made an apparent mistake while processing it, rectification may be appropriate.
| What happened | Likely route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You entered income, bank details or address details incorrectly in the return you submitted. | Revised return, if the year-specific window remains open. | The Department says these are changes to the return and should be made through a revised return. |
| Your return correctly reported a deduction or tax credit, but the processed intimation did not consider it. | Rectification request may fit. | Rectification can ask for reprocessing or correction of an eligible processing error apparent from the record. |
| You want to add a new income source or claim a deduction that was absent from the return. | Do not use rectification as a general amendment. | The Department’s rectification FAQ excludes new income sources and fresh or additional deduction claims from return-data correction. |
| The ordinary revision deadline has passed. | Check whether an updated return (ITR-U) or another lawful route is available. | ITR-U is a separate mechanism with its own eligibility rules and consequences; it is not the same as revision or rectification. |
These are route indicators, not a ruling on individual eligibility. Keep the filed return, computation, tax-credit records, intimation or order and payment proofs together before acting.

What a revised return does
A revised return replaces the return you previously submitted for the same assessment year with a corrected version. You use it to fix information that you, your preparer or your employer supplied incorrectly or omitted from the original filing, subject to the deadline and other statutory conditions.
Typical corrections suited to revision
- Wrong salary, interest, rental or other income figure.
- An incorrect bank-account number or account selected for refund.
- A changed address or other personal detail.
- Incorrect tax-regime selection or other return particulars that can be changed in the return form.
- A calculation, typing or data-entry error discovered after submission.
- Correction of a belated return where the law and the applicable period still permit revision.
The Department’s rectification FAQ expressly says that income, bank and address details can be updated through a revised return. Do not send those changes as a rectification request merely because an intimation has already arrived.
What revision does not mean
Revision does not reopen every past year indefinitely. It is available only while the relevant year’s revision window and statutory conditions permit it. A revised return also does not erase the obligation to disclose all income and retain supporting records; it simply submits corrected return data.

Deadlines are assessment-year specific. The Income Tax Department’s ITR-1 FAQ states that, from AY 2026-27 onward, the due date for filing a revised return is extended to the end of the relevant assessment year—31 March of that AY. Do not apply that date automatically to an earlier year or to a return governed by a different provision.
For the AY 2026-27 guidance, the FAQ says that filing a revised return after 31 December and through 31 March attracts a section 234I fee. It lists ₹1,000 when total income is up to ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 when total income exceeds ₹5 lakh. Treat these as the Department’s stated schedule for the covered guidance, not as a universal fee for every assessment year.
| Timing described in the Department’s AY 2026-27 guidance | Stated consequence |
|---|---|
| On or before 31 December | The FAQ does not describe the section 234I late-revision fee for this period. |
| After 31 December through 31 March of the relevant AY | Section 234I fee: ₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5 lakh; ₹5,000 if total income exceeds ₹5 lakh. |
Check the amount calculated by the current e-Filing workflow before submitting. The portal may apply year-specific rules, interest or other amounts in addition to the fee described above.

How to file a revised return
Use the return-filing workflow for the same assessment year and identify the filing as a revision. The labels can change, so follow the options displayed for that year rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Note the assessment year, original acknowledgement number and date of filing. Confirm that the original return was submitted and, where required, verified.
- Reconcile the error. Compare the filed return with salary certificates, interest statements, rent records, broker statements, Form 26AS and other tax documents. Write down the corrected figures before opening the form.
- Start the return for the same AY. In the e-Filing portal’s income-tax-return filing workflow, select the revised-return option shown for that assessment year. Do not start a return for a different year just because the tax year is similar.
- Enter the original-return identifiers. Supply the original acknowledgement details requested by the form. This connects the revision to the return it replaces.
- Correct every affected schedule. Update the source schedule as well as totals, tax computation, bank details and verification information. A changed income figure may alter deductions, tax, interest, refund and carry-forward figures elsewhere in the form.
- Review the computation. Check that withholding and advance-tax credits agree with available records and that the refund or balance payable is plausible. Save a copy of the completed computation.
- Pay any amount shown. If the portal calculates a fee, interest or additional tax, pay it through the available payment flow and retain the challan details.
- Submit and verify. Complete the permitted electronic or other verification method within the stated time. An unverified submission may not be treated as a valid return.
- Preserve evidence. Download the acknowledgement, revised computation, payment receipt and verification confirmation. Keep the original return as well; the revised filing does not make the original records irrelevant.
If the portal does not offer a revision for the year, stop and check the deadline and eligibility instead of trying to force the filing through rectification.
What rectification is
Rectification asks the authority to correct a mistake apparent from the existing record in an eligible intimation or order. It is designed for an error that can be identified from the return, schedules, tax-credit data or order itself without introducing a new factual claim that was never in the record.
Orders and situations covered by the Department’s FAQ
- An intimation issued under section 143(1).
- A CPC order under section 154.
- An assessment order, where the matter is within the relevant authority’s jurisdiction.
For a CPC order, the e-Filing account provides a route through Services > Rectification. The available options and the authority responsible can depend on the order and the issue.
The three online request types
| Request type | When it is intended to help | Examples from the Department’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Reprocess the return | The return contains correct particulars but CPC did not consider them during processing. | A correctly reported deduction or a TDS, TCS, self-assessment-tax or advance-tax credit was not reflected. |
| Tax-credit mismatch correction | Credit details in processing do not match the available tax records. | Challan information or TDS/TCS entries need correction. The Department cautions against claiming credits that are not present in Form 26AS. |
| Return-data correction | A limited correction to return data is permitted by the rectification workflow. | Use only for changes the portal and guidance allow; do not use it to add a new income source or a fresh or additional deduction. |
What rectification cannot do
- Change income, bank or address details that you entered incorrectly; those belong in a revised return.
- Introduce a new income source after processing.
- Add a deduction or exemption that was not claimed in the return.
- Add fresh or additional claims involving deductions, brought-forward losses or MAT credit through return-data correction.
- Serve as a general appeal against a debatable interpretation or a new claim requiring investigation.
The Department states: “Do not use rectification request for any other mistake on your part which can be corrected with a revised return.” That distinction is the safest way to avoid rejection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to submit a rectification request
- Read the intimation or order line by line. Identify the adjustment, the section under which it was issued, the order date and the authority shown.
- Compare the result with your filed return. Locate the exact schedule, line, credit or calculation that was already present in the submitted return or in the department’s records.
- Check the request window. The CPC FAQ describes a limit of four years from the end of the financial year in which the intimation or order sought to be amended was passed. For example, an order passed during a financial year is measured from that financial year’s 31 March, not from your filing date. Confirm the portal’s calculation for your case.
- Open the portal route. Sign in and go to Services > Rectification. Select the relevant assessment year and order, then choose reprocessing, tax-credit mismatch correction or the permitted return-data option.
- Enter only the correction supported by the record. Quote the affected schedule or credit and upload or retain supporting documents if the workflow asks for them. Do not add unrelated changes to improve the tax result.
- Submit and save the acknowledgement. Record the request number, date and selected request type. Monitor the account for a response or a request for clarification.
- Use the Assessing Officer route when directed. The Department’s FAQ notes that some cases must go to the Assessing Officer, including cases where the portal or CPC route does not allow the request or where rights lie with that officer.
A rectification request is not a substitute for an appeal where the issue is a contested legal conclusion rather than an apparent record error. The notice or order will indicate whether another remedy is required.

Examples that show the difference
A salary figure was typed incorrectly
You discover that salary income was entered as ₹9,80,000 instead of ₹8,90,000. The error is in the return you filed. A revised return is the natural route if the applicable window is open. Rectification is not appropriate merely because the return has already been processed.
A deduction was reported but omitted in processing
Your filed return contains the deduction and the supporting particulars, but the section 143(1) intimation computes tax without it. Because the filed record is correct and the processing result appears to omit it, a reprocess rectification request may fit. Use the deduction exactly as originally reported; do not increase it through rectification.
A TDS credit does not appear
First compare the credit with Form 26AS and your employer or payer statement. If the credit is present in the official tax record and the processed result missed it, the tax-credit mismatch or reprocessing route may be relevant. If the credit is absent from Form 26AS, do not claim it solely through rectification; resolve the reporting mismatch with the deductor and follow the portal’s instructions.

You forgot to claim a deduction
A deduction that was never in the filed return is a fresh claim. The rectification FAQ excludes fresh or additional deductions and new exemptions from rectification. Check whether a revised return, updated return or another lawful procedure remains available for that year before filing anything.
You omitted freelance income
Adding a new income source changes the substance of the return. It is outside the limited return-data correction described for rectification. Check the revision deadline first; if it has expired, examine ITR-U eligibility and the consequences with current professional or departmental guidance.

When the revision window has closed
Do not relabel a late correction as rectification. The Department treats an updated return (ITR-U) as a separate route for eligible earlier years. Eligibility, the permitted period, additional tax and other consequences depend on the year and facts. An ITR-U may not be available for every type of change or every procedural situation.
Gather the original return, processing result, corrected computation and payment records, then check the current ITR-U conditions for the relevant year. If the portal does not offer a route, read the order for the Assessing Officer or appeal instructions rather than submitting an unrelated rectification request.
Why the assessment year and the 2026 transition matter
India’s terminology is changing. The Income Tax Department’s transition FAQ says the Income Tax Act, 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026. It also says the Income-tax Act, 1961 continues to govern tax years beginning before 1 April 2026 and related proceedings, including rectification, even when action occurs after the new Act starts. The portal is running compliance under both Acts concurrently.
AY 2026-27 returns relate to a period governed by the earlier Act and use forms under that Act, according to the Department. Therefore, do not convert an AY into a “tax year” by guesswork or apply a section number from a different year. Write down all four identifiers before you begin:
- Assessment year shown on the return or portal.
- Income or tax year to which the return relates.
- Date the original return was filed and verified.
- Date and section of the intimation or order, if one exists.
This information determines which deadline, form, fee and authority applies.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing rectification because it appears faster
A rectification request can be rejected when the underlying problem is your own return data. Correct the return through revision when permitted, even if that requires rebuilding schedules.

Adding a new claim under “return-data correction”
The existence of a menu option does not expand its legal scope. New income, new deductions, brought-forward losses and MAT-credit additions are specifically restricted in the Department’s FAQ.
Claiming tax credit without a matching record
Use Form 26AS and other official records. The Department cautions against claiming credits that are not present in Form 26AS; ask the deductor to correct its filing when necessary.
Using the filing date to calculate the rectification limit
The CPC guidance measures four years from the end of the financial year in which the order was passed. The relevant date is the order, not simply the date you filed the return.
Ignoring verification
A revised return or other online filing must be verified through an available method. Save proof of verification and check the portal status rather than assuming that submission alone completed the process.
Relying on an old deadline
Deadlines and fees change by assessment year. The Department’s AY 2026-27 guidance gives a 31 March endpoint and a post-31 December fee structure for that guidance; it should not be treated as a timeless rule.
Documents to assemble before either route
- Copy of the original return and acknowledgement number.
- Revised computation showing each changed figure.
- Salary, pension, interest, rent, investment and other income statements relevant to the correction.
- Form 26AS and tax-payment challans for TDS, TCS, advance tax and self-assessment tax.
- The section 143(1) intimation, CPC order or assessment order, including its date and reference number.
- Bank-account and contact details exactly as they should appear in the return.
- Proof of any fee, additional tax or interest paid during submission.
- Copies of all acknowledgements, verification confirmations and rectification request numbers.
Organising these records first prevents a common error: trying to use rectification to repair a return that was never correct, or trying to revise a year for which the portal has already closed the revision window.
A practical decision checklist
- Is the error in the return you submitted, or only in the department’s processing result?
- Has the return been processed, and do you have an intimation or order?
- Would your proposed change alter income, add a new source, or introduce a deduction or exemption that was not claimed?
- What assessment year or tax year is involved, and which Act governs it?
- Is the revised-return window still open, including any year-specific fee?
- If considering rectification, is the mistake apparent from the existing record and within the CPC or Assessing Officer time limit?
- If neither route is available, does ITR-U or an appeal or Assessing Officer process apply?
- Have you saved the original and corrected computations, tax-credit evidence, order and submission proof?
If the answers point to a changed return, file a revision when allowed. If they point to an authority error on an accurate filed record, use the narrowly matched rectification request. When the facts involve a new claim, an expired deadline, a disputed legal issue or conflicting notices, obtain current advice from the Income Tax Department or a qualified tax professional before submitting.
