A tax authority may still be processing the return, correcting a mismatch, reviewing a credit or identity issue, or applying the refund to a debt. Start with the official status tracker and any account notice, then compare the elapsed time with the guidance for your country, filing method and return type.

What a “processing” or “received” status actually tells you
Most tax agencies use broad status stages rather than a diagnosis. On the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tracker, the usual stages are Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. “Received” means the agency has accepted the return into its processing system; it does not promise an approval date. “Processing” can remain visible while the agency checks information, corrects an error or performs additional review.
A generic status message also does not prove that identity theft, fraud or a mathematical mistake is involved. Only an official notice, account message or an agent can identify a specific hold. Check the authority’s website by typing the address yourself, rather than following links or phone numbers in an unsolicited text, email or social-media message.

The IRS summarizes the issue this way: “Refund delays can happen when a tax return needs corrections or further review.” That wording matters because a delay is often a processing event, not a final decision that you are ineligible for a refund.
How long a refund normally takes
Timing depends on the authority, the filing method, the tax year and whether the return is original or amended. The following are typical expectations, not guaranteed payment dates.
| Authority and return | Typical or contact guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. federal original return filed electronically | About three weeks in ordinary cases | A return selected for correction or review can take longer. |
| U.S. federal original return mailed on paper | Six or more weeks | Paper handling and manual work add time; six weeks is not a promise. |
| Canada federal T1, taxpayer living in Canada | Wait 12 weeks before contacting the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) about a refund | Use the CRA processing-time checker and account tracker for the current estimate for your filing method. |
| Canada federal T1, taxpayer living outside Canada | Wait 16 weeks before contacting the CRA about a refund | The current processing-time checker remains the reference for electronic versus paper filing. |
For the IRS, a current-year electronically filed return generally appears in the tracker 24 hours after filing. A prior-year electronic return generally appears after three to four days, while a paper return generally takes about four weeks to appear. These are availability windows for the tracker, not additional promises about when money will arrive.

Do not compare the IRS’s three-week electronic estimate directly with the CRA’s 12- or 16-week contact guidance. They describe different authorities and different measures. Match the same country, tax year, return type, filing method and location before deciding that a case is outside normal handling.
Common reasons a U.S. federal refund is delayed
Missing, incorrect or mismatched information
A missing signature or math error can stop a return from moving through normal processing. The IRS and the Taxpayer Advocate Service also describe “unpostable” returns that cannot be posted to an account because information does not match existing records. A common example is a name and Social Security number mismatch after marriage. Paper returns can also enter error-resolution work when a taxpayer’s calculation is wrong or an IRS transcription is wrong. Processing rejects generally involve missing or incorrect information.
Compare the filed return with your W-2s, 1099s, prior-year information and identification records. Check spelling, taxpayer identification numbers, filing status, dependents and the whole-dollar refund amount used in the tracker. If the tracker or a notice asks for a correction or document, follow that instruction. Do not send a second original return merely because the first one is slow.

Refundable-credit review
The IRS must hold returns claiming the Earned Income Credit until at least mid-February by law. Additional Child Tax Credit claims can require further review as well. A credit hold is not evidence that the claim is improper; it means the return is subject to timing or verification rules.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIdentity-theft or fraud indicators
IRS processing categories include suspected identity-theft and suspected fraudulent returns. The agency may send a notice asking you to verify your identity or provide supporting information. Respond only through the method and deadline stated in that notice. A general “processing” status alone cannot tell you that your return is in one of these categories.
Identity-theft victim assistance cases can take substantially longer than ordinary returns. The National Taxpayer Advocate reported average resolution times of nearly two years for identity-theft victim assistance cases in its fiscal-year 2025 discussion. That figure applies to those specialized cases, not to every delayed refund, so it should not be used as a general estimate.
Manual processing, including injured-spouse relief
An injured-spouse request asks the IRS to protect one spouse’s share of a joint refund from a debt attributable to the other spouse. Such requests require manual processing. The manual review can make the payment take longer than an ordinary joint return.
An amended return is being compared with the original
When you file Form 1040-X, the IRS compares and reviews both returns. That additional work can delay a refund associated with the amendment. An amended federal return has a separate status service: the standard Where’s My Refund tracker does not show Form 1040-X progress. Use Where’s My Amended Return instead.

Why the refund amount can be reduced or kept
A refund that is reduced or redirected is different from a return that has not finished processing. The IRS may offset a refund against past-due federal tax, child support, federal agency nontax debt or state income tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service issues IRS refunds and mails an offset notice; the IRS says it does not have the details of that debt. Read the notice to identify the creditor and dispute the obligation with that creditor if appropriate.
The CRA may keep all or part of a refund for an amount owing or pending amount owing, a qualifying garnishment order, certain federal, provincial or territorial debts, outstanding GST/HST returns in specified business situations, or a refund of $2 or less. An offset can occur after the return has been assessed, so the issue is the amount paid rather than a processing hold.
Look for language showing that the refund was offset, applied or reduced. That is different from a tracker that still says the return is being processed. Contact the creditor or follow the notice’s dispute process when the debt is wrong; repeatedly contacting the tax-processing office will not usually supply details it does not hold.
Step-by-step: what to do about a delayed U.S. federal refund
- Confirm the return and jurisdiction. Determine whether you filed an original federal Form 1040, an amended Form 1040-X, a state return or a business return. Each can have a different tool and timetable.
- Check the official IRS tracker. Have your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status and the exact whole-dollar amount of your expected refund. The tracker may show Return Received, Refund Approved or Refund Sent. Enter the information exactly as filed; an estimate or a different refund amount can produce a no-match result.
- Allow for tracker availability. Current-year e-filed returns generally become visible after 24 hours, prior-year e-filed returns after three to four days, and paper returns after about four weeks. A return not yet visible during that initial window is not necessarily lost.
- Use the amended-return tracker when applicable. Form 1040-X is excluded from Where’s My Refund. Do not submit another amendment simply to make an existing case move.
- Read every notice and account message. If the IRS requests identity verification, records or another response, use the instructions in that notice and meet its deadline. Keep copies of what you send and proof of delivery or electronic submission.
- Compare elapsed time with the correct expectation. For an ordinary case, allow about three weeks after electronic filing and six or more weeks after mailing. A review, mismatch, credit hold or manual case can require more time.
- Contact the IRS only when the guidance or notice supports it. Have the filed return, identification information and any requested documents available. An agent cannot bypass a legally required hold or replace a missing document. Do not assume a phone call is required when the notice directs you to an online verification process.
- Trace a payment that was issued but did not arrive. First confirm the IRS issue date and allow four weeks for a mailed check. Depending on filing status, some taxpayers can start a trace in the tracker or IRS app; joint filers may call or file Form 3911. If the check was cashed, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service investigates the claim, and the IRS says that review can take up to six weeks.
- Amend only an actual error. If the filed return is wrong, follow current IRS amendment instructions. Eligible current and prior two-year amended returns can be filed electronically using tax software. A slow refund by itself is not a reason to amend, and paid software cannot make the IRS process a return faster.
Step-by-step: what to do about a delayed Canadian federal refund
- Confirm that you are checking a federal T1 return. Provincial returns and business filings can use different services.
- Check your CRA account and refund tracker. Use the CRA processing-time checker to match your filing method and the tax year. Processing estimates can change, so use the live tool rather than an old screenshot or forum post.
- Wait the applicable contact period. CRA guidance asks taxpayers in Canada to wait 12 weeks and taxpayers outside Canada to wait 16 weeks before contacting it about refund status.
- Read account messages and mailed notices. Supply documents only through the channel and deadline the CRA specifies. Never email sensitive tax records to an address supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Contact the CRA after the period or when directed. Have your social insurance number, name, date of birth, address and a tax document or CRA account access ready. This allows the agent to authenticate you and locate the return.
- Check for an offset separately. An amount owing, garnishment or other eligible debt can explain why the payment is smaller than expected even after the return is processed.
Should you file an amended return?
Amendment is a correction procedure, not a delay remedy. Use it when a filed return contains a genuine omission or error, such as income or a deduction that was reported incorrectly. The agency may need to compare the original and amended returns, so filing can add work rather than accelerate payment.
If the return is accurate and the tracker simply says received or processing, wait for the agency’s review or follow a notice. Filing duplicate returns or repeated amendments can create additional mismatches and make the account harder to resolve.
What the IRS workload figures do—and do not—show
The Taxpayer Advocate Service reported that 33,544,912 individual taxpayer submissions were suspended during IRS processing in fiscal year 2025. It estimated that about 3.6 million taxpayers received refunds beyond normal IRS processing time; average waits for that group were seven weeks for electronic filers and 14 weeks for paper filers. These figures describe U.S. federal processing in FY 2025, not the expected wait for every taxpayer today.

When a delay needs urgent attention
- You received an official identity-verification or document request and the deadline is approaching.
- The tracker says a refund was sent, the applicable mailing period has passed, and the payment is missing.
- The refund amount is lower than expected and an offset notice identifies a debt you do not recognize.
- Your name, Social Security number, ITIN or bank information was entered incorrectly.
- A notice says the return was rejected, cannot be posted or requires a response.
Keep the filed return, confirmation of electronic submission, notices, wage and income records, amendment receipts and copies of every response. This record makes a call or written inquiry more productive and helps distinguish a processing issue from an incorrect return or an offset.
Frequently asked questions
Does “refund received” mean the IRS approved my refund?
No. It means the return entered the IRS processing system. Approval and sending are separate stages, and a return can be selected for correction or review after receipt.
Should I call as soon as my refund is late?
First check the correct tracker and any notice, then compare the elapsed time with the applicable guidance. For the IRS, typical timing is about three weeks for e-filed returns and six or more weeks for mailed returns. The CRA asks taxpayers to wait 12 weeks in Canada or 16 weeks outside Canada before contacting it about refund status, unless a notice directs earlier action.
Why is my refund smaller than the amount on my return?
An offset may have applied the refund to past-due tax, child support, another eligible government debt or a garnishment. Read the offset notice for the creditor. This is different from a return that is still waiting to be processed.
Can I file another return to speed things up?
No. A duplicate return can create mismatches and additional work. File an amendment only when the original return contains a genuine error and follow the agency’s instructions.

What if the IRS says my check was sent but I never received it?
Confirm the issue date, allow four weeks for mailing, then use the IRS refund-trace process. Depending on your filing status, you may start through the tracker or IRS app, call, or submit Form 3911. A cashed-check investigation by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service can take up to six weeks.
Is a delayed refund proof of fraud?
No. Delays also result from ordinary errors, missing signatures, paper processing, refundable-credit rules, amendments and manual review. Follow an official identity-verification notice if one arrives, but do not infer fraud from a generic status.
Bottom line
Use the official tracker first, then read the account notice before taking action. Match the elapsed time to the right authority and filing method, separate a processing hold from a debt offset, and respond promptly to any verification request. Do not file a duplicate return or amend an accurate return just because the refund is taking longer than expected. If the IRS shows that a check was sent but it never arrived, use the refund-trace process after the required waiting period.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should an IRS refund take?
The IRS describes about three weeks for a typical electronically filed federal return and six or more weeks for a mailed return. These are typical expectations, not guarantees; review, mismatches and manual cases can take longer.
How long should I wait before contacting the CRA?
The CRA asks taxpayers living in Canada to wait 12 weeks and those outside Canada to wait 16 weeks before contacting it about refund status. Check the CRA processing-time checker and account tracker first.
Why did the IRS reduce my refund?
The IRS may offset a refund against past-due federal tax, child support, federal agency nontax debt or state income tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends the offset notice and identifies the creditor.
Can I amend my return because the refund is delayed?
Not merely because processing is slow. Amend only to correct a genuine error, because the IRS compares the original and amended returns and the amendment can require additional review.
What should I do if a refund check never arrived?
After confirming the IRS issue date and allowing four weeks for mailing, request a refund trace through the available IRS route. Joint filers may call or file Form 3911; a cashed-check investigation can take up to six weeks.
The Bottom Line
Check the right official tracker, read every notice, and compare the wait with the matching authority and filing method. Distinguish processing delays from offsets, avoid duplicate filings, and use an amendment or refund trace only for the situation it is designed to fix.
