A late-arriving income-tax reassessment notice does not automatically reset your legal deadline. The controlling rule depends on the country, tax authority, taxpayer type, document, and event that starts the clock. A Canadian individual, a Canadian corporation and a UK taxpayer can face different periods and different dispute procedures.
Identify the authority and tax year, record every date, preserve the envelope and electronic delivery evidence, compare the revised figures with your return, and contact the issuing authority promptly. The Canadian and UK examples below illustrate the differences; they are not universal rules for every jurisdiction.

What to do immediately
Treat the notice as time-sensitive even if it reached you late. Do not wait for a replacement copy or assume that the date you opened the envelope controls. Start a written record on the day you discover the notice.
- Identify the issuer. Write down the country, tax authority, office or department, and any reference number.
- Identify the decision. Note whether it is called an assessment, reassessment, determination, redetermination, appealable decision, or something else.
- Record the dates. Capture the date printed on the notice, the stated response deadline, the date on any electronic posting, and the date and method of physical delivery.
- Secure the evidence. Keep the complete notice, envelope, postmark, courier or tracking record, email alert, account screenshot, and every related letter.
- Check your account. Sign in to the authority’s secure online service and download correspondence connected with the same tax year.
- Calendar the earliest plausible deadline. Until the authority confirms otherwise, work to the shortest date that could apply.
- Get advice quickly if the amount is material or a deadline is close. A tax lawyer or tax professional familiar with reassessments can assess the applicable rule and prepare a protective filing.
These steps protect your position while you determine which procedure actually applies.

Confirm exactly what was changed
A reassessment is not necessarily a demand for payment caused by an error in your return. It may change income, deductions, credits, losses, tax payable, interest, penalties, or several items at once. Read the explanation line by line before deciding how to respond.
Build a change list
- Copy each line from the original return and the reassessed notice.
- Show the old amount, new amount, and numerical difference.
- Record the reason given for each adjustment, including a reference to a missing slip, denied expense, changed interpretation, or information from a third party.
- Mark which items you accept and which you dispute.
- Calculate the effect on tax, interest and penalties separately so that a disagreement about one item does not obscure another.
Compare the notice with your filed return, information slips, schedules, invoices, bank records and prior correspondence. If the authority asked for documents before issuing the reassessment, include the request and your response in the same file. The goal is to distinguish a calculation error from a disagreement about facts or law; the appropriate remedy can differ.
Establish the jurisdiction and taxpayer type
The phrase “income tax reassessment” is used by many authorities, but deadlines are not interchangeable. Before counting days, answer four questions.

Which authority issued it?
Look for the authority’s name, logo, mailing address, online-account domain and statutory wording. A federal notice may follow a different process from a provincial, state, territorial or municipal notice. If more than one authority is involved, treat each notice as a separate case.
Which tax year or accounting period is covered?
Write the year exactly as shown. A notice can arrive years after a return was filed, and a correspondence thread can contain several periods. Do not use the date of a later letter for an earlier decision unless the authority’s rules say that letter starts a new period.

Who is the taxpayer?
Individual, corporation, trust, partnership and estate rules can differ even within the same country. Confirm the legal name and identification number on the notice. A company officer should not assume that an individual’s period applies to the company, and a trustee should not assume that an individual route is available to a trust.
What kind of document is it?
A notice changing an assessment may have an objection or appeal route. A request for information, a statement of account, a payment demand or an administrative adjustment may require a different response. Read the document’s heading and instructions rather than relying on the envelope or a phone description.

Preserve proof of when the notice arrived
Late physical delivery can be important evidence, but the sources reviewed here do not establish a cross-jurisdiction rule that it automatically extends a deadline. Keep the original envelope flat, photograph both sides, and retain any postmark, barcode or tracking history. Save the date-stamped email or portal notification that alerted you to an electronic copy. If someone else received or opened the mail, write a short dated statement describing what happened.
Make a timeline with four separate events: the date printed on the decision, the date the authority says it sent or posted it, the date it appeared in your online account, and the date you actually received it. Do not collapse those events into one “notice date.” Ask the authority which event its rule uses and request the answer in writing or note the representative’s name, date and reference number.
Do not confuse an adjustment request with a formal dispute
Some authorities offer an administrative adjustment process for correcting a return. A formal objection, review or appeal is a separate legal step. Filing an adjustment request may be sensible when the authority simply missed information, but it may not preserve the period for a formal objection.

Canada’s Revenue Agency specifically tells taxpayers to choose the route that fits their situation and to check adjustment processing before deciding whether an objection is appropriate. Its decision tree includes the instruction:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“Before filing an objection, check the estimated processing times of Individual (T1) adjustments.”
Use that instruction as a sequencing check, not as permission to wait. If a formal deadline could expire while an adjustment is pending, submit the protective objection or appeal allowed by the governing rules and explain the overlapping request.
Official deadline examples: Canada and the United Kingdom
The following table is a comparison of the specific official examples covered here. It is not a substitute for the wording on your notice or the current rule for another country, province, state or taxpayer type.
| Jurisdiction and taxpayer | First dispute route | Event used to start the period | Standard period | Late option described by the authority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada, individual income-tax return | Objection to the reassessment or redetermination | The later of the relevant filing-deadline limb or the notice date; the statute describes the latter as 90 days after the day the notice is sent | Later of one year after the return filing deadline or 90 days after the notice of reassessment or redetermination | Application for an extension may be available up to one year after the objection deadline, subject to statutory conditions; approval is not guaranteed |
| Canada, corporation | Objection to the reassessment | Date of the notice | 90 days from the date of the notice | Application for an extension may be available for up to one year after the original objection deadline, subject to statutory conditions |
| United Kingdom, HMRC decision | Appeal or acceptance of a review | Date of the decision letter | Usually 30 days | A late appeal requires a reasonable excuse under HMRC guidance; the decision letter may give additional instructions |
Canada’s guidance and legislation use closely related but not identical wording: public guidance refers to the notice date, while the statutory limb refers to the day the notice is sent. That distinction is why a late-delivery argument should be raised with the authority rather than assumed to succeed.

Canada: individual objections
For an individual Canadian income-tax return, the Canada Revenue Agency says the objection deadline is generally the later of one year after the filing deadline for the return or 90 days after the date on the notice of reassessment or redetermination. The Income Tax Act expresses the second limb by reference to 90 days after the day the notice is sent. Apply the current official instruction to the exact notice and filing year; do not treat the date you found the envelope as automatically controlling.
How to prepare the objection
- List every reassessed line you dispute.
- Explain the facts in chronological order, using amounts that reconcile to your records.
- State the relief you want, such as restoring a deduction, credit, loss or income amount.
- Attach the documents that prove each point and identify the relevant page or schedule.
- Keep proof of submission and the complete copy of what you sent.
CRA’s dispute material describes a later Tax Court appeal route and states that the Tax Court must receive an appeal within 90 days of the date CRA sends its decision on the objection. That is a separate stage: first preserve the objection, then assess the decision and any appeal period.
Canada: what to do if the objection period has passed
CRA says an individual or corporation may apply for an extension for up to one year after the objection deadline. An application is an opportunity to ask for relief, not an automatic grant. Statutory conditions apply, so explain why the deadline was missed, describe when you learned of the notice, and attach the delivery evidence and a ready-to-decide objection.
Submit the extension request through the route specified for the taxpayer and notice, and keep confirmation of receipt. Continue to monitor the account and respond to any request for information. If the one-year window may also be close, obtain professional advice immediately rather than waiting for an informal answer.
United Kingdom: HMRC decisions
GOV.UK says taxpayers usually have 30 days from the date of the decision letter to appeal or accept a review. The particular letter can contain additional instructions, so follow its stated route and identify the decision being challenged.

If the 30 days have expired
HMRC guidance says a late appeal needs a reasonable excuse. Explain the reason precisely, give the date the excuse ended, and show that you acted promptly afterward. A late-arriving letter may be relevant evidence, but the guidance does not promise that delayed post alone will be accepted. Include the envelope, tracking history, online-account record and a chronology with the appeal.
Responding when delivery was late
Use a two-track response: preserve the substantive dispute and raise the delivery issue. In the same correspondence, state that you received the notice on a later date than the date printed or shown as sent, provide the evidence, and ask which deadline the authority considers applicable. Request confirmation of whether your filing is treated as timely or whether an extension application is required.
Do not rely on a telephone assurance without recording the representative’s name, case number and instructions. A call can clarify the route, but a formal objection, appeal or extension request must still be submitted in the required form and within the safest available period.

- Counting from the day you opened the envelope. Some rules refer to the notice date, sending date or decision-letter date. Verify the trigger before calculating.
- Waiting for a corrected notice. Ask for clarification while preparing the response; waiting can consume the dispute period.
- Filing only an adjustment request. An administrative correction may not replace a formal objection or appeal.
- Sending unsupported disagreement. Explain each changed line and attach records that prove the requested correction.
- Ignoring taxpayer type. Individual, corporation and trust procedures can differ.
- Failing to preserve originals. An envelope, postmark or portal timestamp may help establish the delivery chronology.
- Assuming an extension is automatic. Canadian extension applications and UK late appeals have conditions and are not guaranteed.
- Missing the next appeal stage. A decision on an objection can start a separate court deadline.
When professional help is warranted
Consider a qualified tax lawyer or tax-dispute professional when the reassessment is high-value, involves penalties or fraud allegations, turns on a legal interpretation, covers several years, or has an imminent or missed deadline. An accountant or tax preparer experienced with reassessments can help reconcile calculations and assemble records. Check the person’s professional qualification, authorization to act before the relevant authority, and experience in the jurisdiction and taxpayer category involved.
Bring the complete notice, envelope, account correspondence, filed return, schedules, information slips, prior submissions, payment records and your date-by-date timeline. A professional can work faster when the evidence is organized and can tell you whether an adjustment, objection, review, appeal or extension is the correct first filing.
A practical recordkeeping template
Create one secure folder for the matter and use a simple chronology:
| Entry | What to record |
|---|---|
| Decision | Authority, document type, tax year, taxpayer name and reference number |
| Dates | Date printed, date sent or posted if shown, online-posting date, physical-receipt date and stated deadline |
| Substance | Each changed line, old amount, new amount, reason and evidence supporting your position |
| Contacts | Date, channel, representative name, reference number and instructions received |
| Filings | Document submitted, submission date, delivery confirmation and follow-up date |
Use the same reference number on every letter and keep a copy of attachments in the order cited. If you send paper documents, use a delivery method that creates a receipt; if you upload online, save the confirmation page or downloadable receipt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDecision path if you are unsure
- Notice identity is unclear: contact the issuing authority and ask what decision and procedure the document represents.
- Figures are wrong but the period is open: prepare the formal objection, appeal or review while separately asking whether an administrative adjustment is available.
- Delivery was delayed: submit the substantive response by the earliest plausible deadline, attach delivery proof, and ask for a written ruling on timeliness.
- The period appears missed: file the available extension or late-appeal request with a complete explanation and evidence.
- The authority rejects the first challenge: read the decision for the next-stage deadline; in the Canadian example, CRA describes a 90-day Tax Court period measured from the date it sends its objection decision.
The safest approach is prompt, documented action: establish the governing authority, preserve the delivery timeline, challenge the substantive change through the correct route, and obtain jurisdiction-specific advice before any stated period expires.
