The terms use a posted-transaction standard, not an intention or booking-date standard. In practical terms, an action that is still pending should not be treated as protection until the corresponding earn or redeem entry appears in your account.

What “12 months” means for a Club account
The clock is based on posted activity
IHG states: “To maintain your account points balance and avoid points expiration, you must have at least one ‘earn’ or ‘redeem’ transaction posted to your account every twelve (12) months.” The key word is posted. A completed stay, partner transaction, or redemption that has not yet been credited may not reset the inactivity period until IHG records it.
Use the posting date shown in your account history as the practical reference point. If your last qualifying transaction posted on June 18, for example, schedule the next eligible activity well before June 18 of the following year. Leaving the activity until the last possible day creates a risk that processing or account-credit delays will carry it beyond the 12-month window.
Pending, planned, or uncredited activity is not a guarantee
A reservation you intend to use, a stay that has not yet appeared in the ledger, or a partner transaction awaiting credit should be treated as unconfirmed for expiration purposes. The official rule does not promise that a pending item protects points. Wait for the earn or redeem entry to post, or allow enough time for posting before the inactivity deadline.
The rule concerns inactivity, not a minimum balance
The published requirement is one posted earn or redeem transaction during the 12-month period. It does not state a minimum number of points that must be earned or redeemed. Do not assume that a particular small purchase, transfer, or adjustment qualifies unless the applicable IHG or partner terms identify it as an eligible transaction and it posts to your account.
Which activities can keep points active?
Activity through IHG properties
IHG’s member guidance identifies IHG properties as a route to earning or redeeming points. A qualifying stay or redemption connected to an IHG property may therefore provide the required activity when the transaction is eligible under the terms and posts to the correct account.
Eligibility can depend on the rate, booking channel, property, and other conditions attached to the transaction. The expiration rule itself does not list every qualifying rate or exception. Before relying on a stay, confirm that the reservation is eligible to earn points or that the planned redemption will deduct points from your account, and retain the confirmation until the transaction posts.
Program partners
IHG’s FAQ also points to program partners as possible earning or redemption routes. Partner arrangements can have their own enrollment, purchase, geographic, and posting requirements. A partner transaction should not be counted merely because the partner is associated with IHG; it must be an eligible activity credited to your IHG One Rewards account.

Check the partner’s current terms and the IHG account entry after the transaction. If the points or redemption do not appear, contact the relevant program before the 12-month deadline rather than assuming the activity has protected the balance.
Redeeming points counts as activity when it posts
The terms expressly refer to both “earn” and “redeem” transactions. A posted redemption can therefore satisfy the activity requirement even though it reduces your balance. The important distinction is between a redemption that has been recorded and an attempted or cancelled transaction that never posts.
The annual credit-card free night is an exception
IHG specifically says that using the annual free night provided to IHG One Rewards credit-card holders does not count as an earn or redeem transaction for preventing point expiration. This is an explicit exception to the general activity rule.
Do not treat the free-night certificate, its issuance, or its use as a substitute for a posted points transaction. A cardholder who otherwise has no qualifying activity still needs an eligible earn or redeem entry on the IHG One Rewards account within the 12-month period if the account is at Club level.
The exception concerns the free-night benefit itself. It does not establish that every other card-related event qualifies or fails to qualify. Rely only on a transaction that the applicable IHG terms identify as an earn or redemption and that appears in the account history.
Why your membership level matters
Club-level members
Club members are subject to the inactivity rule. If no qualifying earn or redeem transaction posts for 12 months or longer, IHG says the points are removed and unavailable for redemption. Club members should therefore monitor both their status and their transaction history.
Elite members
IHG’s terms state: “Elite Members’ Points do not expire as long as Elite level membership is maintained.” This protection is conditional on continuing to hold Elite status; it is not a permanent guarantee attached to points earned while you were previously Elite.

If you drop from Elite to Club
A change from Elite to Club changes the risk profile. Once Club-level rules apply, the 12-month inactivity requirement becomes relevant. Review the date of your last posted earn or redeem transaction when your status changes instead of assuming that the prior Elite period permanently protects the balance.

Step-by-step: keep a Club-level balance active
- Sign in to your IHG One Rewards account. Open the account area that displays your current membership level and transaction history.
- Confirm whether you are Club or Elite. If the account shows Elite status, verify that the status is still maintained. If it shows Club, apply the 12-month inactivity rule.
- Find the latest posted earn or redeem entry. Use the date recorded in the transaction history, not the date you made a booking or expected points to arrive.
- Calculate a conservative deadline. Mark the 12-month anniversary, then choose an earlier personal deadline so there is time for the activity to process and post.
- Select an eligible activity. Consider an IHG property transaction or a program-partner activity that the current terms allow. Confirm eligibility before spending money or committing points.
- Complete the transaction using the account attached to your IHG One Rewards membership. Check names, membership numbers, and any required enrollment details so the activity can be credited correctly.
- Verify that the transaction posts. Return to the account history and look for the earn or redeem entry. Until it appears, treat the 12-month requirement as unmet.
- Record the posting date. Save a screenshot or statement for your records and set the next reminder for less than 12 months later.
This process does not require you to earn a particular number of points. It requires a qualifying transaction to be recorded on the account. If a transaction is missing, use IHG’s support channels or the partner’s missing-credit process while there is still time to address the issue.
A practical monitoring system
Keep a single “last posted activity” date
Record the date of the newest qualifying entry whenever you earn or redeem. A simple calendar note can include the transaction type, posting date, and the date by which you want the next activity completed. This avoids relying on memory, especially when you hold several loyalty accounts.
Use two reminders, not one
Set an early reminder several weeks or months before the 12-month anniversary and a second reminder closer to your personal deadline. The purpose is to leave time for a transaction to post and for you to contact support if the credit is missing. A reminder on the anniversary itself is too late if the activity has not already posted.
Recheck after status changes
Review the account whenever Elite status begins, ends, or changes tier. Elite status removes the expiration risk only while it is maintained. A downgrade can put an otherwise untouched balance back under the Club-level rule.
Separate free-night certificates from points activity
Track certificates in a different note from points transactions. The annual cardholder free night is not qualifying activity, so using it should not cause you to move the points-expiration reminder.

Examples of how the rule works
Example 1: Club member with a posted stay
A Club member’s last eligible stay posts on March 4, 2026. The member should arrange another eligible earn or redeem transaction early enough to post before March 4, 2027. A reservation made in February 2027 does not by itself prove that the requirement has been met; the account must show the transaction.
Example 2: A redemption posts before the deadline
A Club member has no recent earning activity but completes a points redemption that posts on September 10, 2026. Because the rule includes redeem transactions, September 10 becomes the practical reference date for the next 12-month period, subject to the transaction being valid under the applicable terms.

Example 3: Free-night use without points activity
A cardholder uses the annual free night in December but has no earn or redeem transaction posted during the rest of the year. The free-night use does not satisfy the activity requirement. If the account is Club level, the cardholder still needs an eligible posted points transaction.
Example 4: Elite status ends
An Elite member’s points remain protected while Elite status is maintained. After a downgrade to Club, the member checks the last posted earn or redeem entry and schedules qualifying activity before 12 months have elapsed from that entry. The previous Elite status does not remove the need to monitor the Club rule after the downgrade.
Example 5: Activity is still pending
A partner transaction is completed shortly before the deadline but remains pending in the account. Because IHG’s rule refers to a transaction being posted, the member should not assume the pending item prevents expiration. The member should review the account, follow the partner’s missing-credit procedure, and contact IHG for an account-specific answer.

If the account shows an activity entry that you believe should have prevented expiration, identify the posting date and transaction type when you contact support. A booking confirmation or payment receipt can help establish what happened, but the policy’s stated test remains the posted earn or redeem transaction.
Common mistakes that put points at risk
- Counting a booking instead of a posted transaction: A planned or pending activity is not the same as an entry in the account ledger.
- Assuming any card benefit qualifies: The annual free night is expressly excluded from the activity test.
- Ignoring membership changes: Elite protection lasts only while Elite status is maintained; a downgrade brings Club-level monitoring back into focus.
- Waiting until the final day: Processing or crediting delays can leave the account without a posted transaction at the 12-month mark.
- Using an unverified partner route: Partner activity must be eligible and credited to the IHG One Rewards account; association with the program alone is not enough.
- Assuming a specific minimum transaction: The published rule does not state a minimum points amount. Do not invent one or rely on an activity that the current terms do not identify.
- Expecting automatic recovery: IHG’s reviewed terms describe expired points as removed and unavailable for redemption but do not establish reinstatement.
How to choose an activity without overspending
The expiration rule is about account activity, not about buying points or taking an unnecessary trip. First look for activity you already need: a qualifying IHG stay, a legitimate redemption you planned to make, or an eligible partner transaction that fits your travel and budget. Verify the current terms before committing, because the exact conditions can vary by property, rate, partner, market, and transaction type.
Do not make a costly purchase solely because you have not confirmed whether it will qualify. If the terms are unclear, ask IHG or the partner whether the activity will post as an earn or redeem transaction to your specific account. Keep the response and the eventual ledger entry together in your records.

Likewise, do not redeem more points than you intend to use simply to create activity. A qualifying redemption can satisfy the rule when it posts, but it also reduces your balance. The financially sensible choice is an eligible transaction that serves a real travel need and can be credited before the deadline.

The official wording establishes three operational facts: Club-level points are subject to a 12-month posted-activity requirement; Elite points do not expire while Elite membership is maintained; and the annual cardholder free night does not count as qualifying activity. The wording does not provide a universal list of every qualifying transaction, a guaranteed posting time, a minimum points amount, or a reinstatement policy for expired points.
