I Used AI to Choose Holiday Gifts for My Family. Here’s What It Picked

AI was useful for getting past the blank page when I needed holiday gift ideas. It was not reliable enough to choose, price-check, or validate the gifts on its own.

In the December 2023 experiment behind this story, Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot received information about family members’ interests and hobbies. The writer refined the prompts and used Bing’s “more creative” response style. The chatbot produced plausible suggestions, but some links were incomplete, incorrect, or unrelated, so the products still had to be found and checked manually.

That is the right way to think about AI gift shopping: use it as a brainstorming assistant, not as an autonomous buyer.

What the AI actually picked

The available summary of the original CNET experiment does not provide a complete recipient-by-recipient list of final gifts. It does establish the workflow: provide personal details, review the first batch of ideas, refine the request, and use the chatbot to generate more tailored possibilities. The tool was described as Bing’s AI chatbot using GPT-4 in the 2023 context; that does not mean the same model or interface exists today. The available summary of the CNET article reports that the suggestions were more useful as starting points than as ready-to-buy recommendations.

A separate article from The Tech Edvocate uses the same title but describes a different scenario. It lists these suggestions:

Recipient Stated recommendation Why it sounded plausible What still needed checking
Nature-loving father High-definition camera drone Combines an interest in nature with photography and outdoor activity. Airspace rules, safety, skill level, camera quality, accessories, local availability, and whether he actually wants a drone.
Avid-reader sister Audiobook subscription and noise-canceling headphones Pairs a reading habit with listening and travel or study use. Subscription renewal cost, preferred audiobook service, device compatibility, fit, sound quality, and return terms.
Teenage niece Indie vinyl records and an ethical-clothing voucher Combines music taste with a flexible fashion gift. Whether she owns a turntable, her preferred artists, voucher restrictions, sizing, and the retailer’s sustainability claims.
Fitness-focused mother AI-powered fitness tracker Matches an apparent interest in exercise and health technology. Accuracy claims, privacy, phone compatibility, subscription fees, medical implications, and comfort.

These accounts should not be merged into one verified experiment. The dates, narrative, and recommendations differ, and the Tech Edvocate version is best treated as a separate or derivative account rather than proof of what the original CNET writer bought. Neither account establishes that the recipients ultimately loved or regularly used the gifts.

Why the experiment was useful

Gift shopping often fails at the first step: the shopper cannot think of any options. A chatbot is good at producing a broad list quickly and then reshaping it when the first answer is too obvious.

  • It turns a vague problem into categories. Instead of asking only for “a gift for Dad,” you can request practical, sentimental, experiential, consumable, hobby-related, and humorous options.
  • It combines interests. A person who likes cooking and travel might receive suggestions for a culinary class, regional ingredients, or a compact travel cooking kit rather than another generic kitchen gadget.
  • It can vary the budget. Ask for inexpensive, mid-range, and splurge versions of the same idea—but calculate the full cost yourself.
  • It suggests non-product gifts. Experiences, subscriptions, classes, personalized bundles, and consumables may be more appropriate than another physical object.
  • It helps refine a promising idea. Once you identify a category, the chatbot can suggest alternatives, add-ons, presentation ideas, and questions to ask casually before buying.

Current Microsoft Copilot shopping features can, in supported markets, display product cards with retailers, prices, ratings, product details, price-history information, and links to retailer checkout pages. Microsoft still warns that Copilot can make mistakes and that users must verify product information, prices, purchase terms, and availability. Microsoft’s shopping guidance also describes ranking inputs that may include merchant data, engagement likelihood, advertising-related results, and retailer feeds. A product card is therefore not the same thing as an independent recommendation.

  • Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (0.30 oz)

What information to give the AI

The quality of the suggestions depends heavily on the brief. Useful details include:

  • Relationship and approximate age range.
  • Specific hobbies, favorite genres, teams, creators, activities, or current interests.
  • Products and categories the person already owns.
  • Items on a known wish list.
  • Things the person would dislike or consider wasteful.
  • Whether the gift should be practical, sentimental, experiential, sustainable, funny, or consumable.
  • A budget that says whether tax, shipping, accessories, subscriptions, and customs are included.
  • Country or region and the delivery deadline.
  • Size, compatibility, dietary, accessibility, safety, or allergy requirements.
  • Gifts already purchased or ruled out.

The Tech Edvocate account says it used past purchases, consented-to social-media activity, shared wish lists, and hobbies mentioned in conversation. That is an illustration from a secondary article, not independently verified evidence of a reproducible experiment. More importantly, consent does not automatically make extensive data collection necessary or safe. Usually, a short description is enough; there is no reason to paste private messages, complete purchase histories, health records, or an identifiable archive of social-media activity into a chatbot.

A better prompt and workflow

Start with categories instead of jumping straight to products. This reduces the risk that the model locks onto an invented item or an unsuitable brand.

Recipient: [relationship and approximate age]
Interests: [specific hobbies, genres, creators, teams, or activities]
Already owns: [known products and categories]
Would dislike: [examples]
Gift type: [practical, sentimental, experience, consumable, or hobby-related]
Budget: [amount, and whether tax and shipping are included]
Deadline: [date]
Location: [country or region]
Constraints: [size, compatibility, allergies, accessibility, sustainability]

Give me 10 ideas divided into safe, surprising, and experiential options.
For each idea, explain why it fits, the likely risks, and what I must verify.
Do not invent products, prices, availability, or retailer links.

Then use this sequence:

  1. Request directions. Ask for gift categories and concepts, not product links.
  2. Choose the promising categories. Reject ideas that feel generic, duplicative, awkward, or out of character.
  3. Request specific products. Ask for model names only after deciding what kind of gift makes sense.
  4. Request alternatives. Get lower-cost, higher-cost, used, repairable, local, or non-subscription options.
  5. Force uncertainty labels. Ask the tool to mark each result as “idea only,” “product identified but needs verification,” “current product with retailer evidence,” or “high-risk recommendation requiring specialist checking.”
  6. Verify independently. Use the manufacturer and retailer pages rather than trusting the chatbot’s description or link.

Where AI gets gift shopping wrong

It knows facts you provide, not the relationship

A model may understand that someone likes gardening without understanding that giving them another tool would feel impersonal, that they already have a favorite brand, or that the gift should acknowledge a shared memory. It can process context; it does not possess human familiarity or emotional understanding.

Personalization can still be generic

“Loves cooking” can produce the same predictable cookware list for thousands of people. Ask for the reasoning behind each idea and require the model to connect it to a specific, current interest. If it cannot explain the connection, treat the suggestion as generic.

Products, links, and prices can be wrong

The original experiment reportedly encountered incomplete or unrelated product links. A chatbot can also invent a product name, confuse editions, describe a discontinued model, or present a stale price. Even modern shopping features may reflect changing retailer feeds. Check the exact model, current total cost, stock, delivery date, and retailer terms at checkout.

It may overlook what the person already owns

Duplicate gifts are especially likely for technology, books, games, tools, kitchen equipment, and fitness gear. Include known possessions and ask for gifts that complement—not repeat—them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It may miss compatibility

Accessories can fail because of the recipient’s phone, console, camera mount, operating system, region, clothing size, electrical standard, or existing subscriptions. Compatibility must be checked against the manufacturer’s specifications.

Budgets drift

A “$100 gift” may require a $60 accessory, batteries, installation, shipping, or a recurring $15 monthly service. Ask for the complete first-year cost, including tax, delivery, required accessories, and renewal charges.

It can make sensitive or unsafe assumptions

Recommendations involving health, fitness, children, cosmetics, food, electrical goods, or personal data deserve additional scrutiny. A fitness tracker is not medical advice, and an AI-generated claim about sleep, exercise, or health should not be treated as clinically reliable.

The verification checklist

Before purchasing an AI-suggested gift, check:

  • The exact product name, model, edition, size, and color.
  • The manufacturer’s specifications and compatibility requirements.
  • The live price, tax, shipping, and any import or installation charges.
  • Whether the product is genuinely in stock and can arrive before the deadline.
  • Return, exchange, warranty, and restocking policies.
  • Subscription terms, automatic renewal, and cancellation rules.
  • Required accessories, batteries, software, accounts, or consumables.
  • Recent customer reviews from sources separate from the AI’s answer.
  • Safety recalls, age ratings, content restrictions, allergies, sizing, and accessibility.
  • A less expensive, more durable, repairable, or locally available alternative.

Keep a simple record: the original AI suggestion, what you verified, what you rejected, why you rejected it, the final product or substitute, and the price and date checked. This prevents a plausible-sounding answer from becoming an unexamined purchase.

Health and fitness gifts

Wearables, supplements, sleep products, and exercise equipment can involve health claims, personal data, and physical safety. Verify claims with the manufacturer and seek appropriate professional guidance where relevant. Do not present a chatbot’s recommendation as medical advice.

Sustainable or ethical gifts

Words such as “eco-friendly,” “ethical,” and “sustainable” are not proof. Look for evidence about materials, labor practices, certifications, repairability, product lifespan, packaging, and shipping distance.

Social-media information

Even if a person has consented to the use of their public posts, extensive collection may be disproportionate, insecure, or embarrassing. Use the minimum information needed to improve the gift idea, and avoid copying private or identifying content into a third-party service.

How to judge an AI gift suggestion

Criterion Question
Personal fit Does it match a specific, current interest rather than a stereotype?
Novelty Is the recipient unlikely to already own it?
Usefulness Will it be used repeatedly, or become clutter?
Emotional fit Does it suit the relationship and occasion?
Budget accuracy Is the complete cost within the real budget?
Verifiability Can the model, price, retailer, and terms be confirmed?
Availability Can it arrive on time in the recipient’s region?
Returnability Can the recipient exchange or return it?
Privacy Did the process require exposing sensitive information?
Safety Are there medical, electrical, food, age, or fitness risks?

Do you need to pay for an AI plan?

Usually, no. Free AI tools are generally sufficient for generating gift categories, refining a prompt, and organizing a shortlist. A paid plan may be useful for someone who wants higher usage limits, document uploads, deeper research features, or broader integration with an existing productivity ecosystem. It does not guarantee more thoughtful gifts, accurate prices, or better emotional judgment.

Do not subscribe solely because a chatbot suggests it. Compare the cost of the plan with the value of the task, and cancel or avoid recurring services that are unnecessary after the holiday shopping is complete. Product prices and AI-plan features change, so verify current terms on the provider’s official page before paying. For shopping specifically, Microsoft says Copilot may provide retailer and price information in supported markets, but also says that users must verify those details.

The practical verdict

AI is worth using when you are stuck, shopping for someone with a niche interest, comparing gift categories, or trying to turn a vague idea into a more personal bundle. It can save search time and produce options you may not have considered.

It should not be the sole authority for product facts, prices, availability, safety, quality, compatibility, or the emotional suitability of a gift. The strongest workflow is simple: give it a restrained recipient brief, ask for categories first, label uncertainty, verify every purchase detail, and make the final judgment yourself.
