Assemble records for each income, tax credit and claim; reconcile AIS and Form 26AS; keep evidence without routinely uploading it; and verify the deadline for the HUF’s exact category.
This checklist applies to India’s Hindu Undivided Families filing income earned in Financial Year (FY) 2025-26. The Income Tax Department describes its HUF guidance as general rather than exhaustive, so unusual facts should be checked against the current notified form, instructions, rules and circulars.

Start with the four decisions that control the return
- Identify every income head. Separate house property, capital gains, other sources, agricultural income and any business or professional profits.
- Choose the form from those facts. Business or professional income usually moves the HUF from ITR-2 to ITR-3, unless it meets the narrower ITR-4 conditions.
- Reconcile reported information. Download the HUF’s Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS, then match them with bank, broker, payer and accounting records.
- Check conditional reporting and the due date. Audit, transfer-pricing and foreign-tax-credit forms apply only when the HUF’s facts trigger them. A deadline extension for one category is not automatically available to every HUF.
The return is filed in the HUF’s capacity, not as an individual family member. Use the current AY 2026-27 utility and verification instructions.
Which ITR form should an HUF file?
| Form | When it is used | Important limits or exclusions | Decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITR-2 | HUF income does not include profits and gains from business or profession. It can cover house property, capital gains, other sources and agricultural income. | The official FAQ states there is no total-income ceiling for ITR-2. | Use it when the HUF has no business or professional income and no fact requiring another form. |
| ITR-3 | HUF has business or professional income and is not eligible for ITR-4. | It also reports the HUF’s other income heads. | Use it when business or professional income exists but the presumptive ITR-4 option is unavailable or not chosen. |
| ITR-4 (Sugam) | An optional form for a qualifying resident HUF with total income up to ₹50 lakh using presumptive taxation under section 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE and satisfying the accompanying-income conditions. | Current exclusions include specified capital gains, foreign assets or income, unlisted equity shares and other cases listed in the form instructions. | Confirm every eligibility condition; the ₹50 lakh ceiling and resident-HUF requirement both matter. |
An HUF should not use ITR-1. The department’s HUF guidance identifies ITR-2, ITR-3 and conditional ITR-4 for HUF filers.

How business income changes the choice
Interest, rent, dividends and capital gains do not by themselves create business income. If the HUF actually carries on a business or profession, examine whether its income can be declared presumptively under section 44AD, 44ADA or 44AE and whether all ITR-4 restrictions are satisfied. If any exclusion applies, ITR-3 is the relevant form. Do not select ITR-4 merely because the HUF’s total income is below ₹50 lakh.
Documents and records to gather
The following is a fact-matched preparation list, not a requirement that every HUF possess every document. Collect the records that support entries actually made in the selected return and its schedules.

Identity and prior-return setup
- HUF PAN and the current contact and bank-account details used in the return.
- The previous return acknowledgement, tax computation and details of any carried-forward loss, demand or refund that must be reflected.
- The current ITR instructions for HUF capacity, authorized verification and bank validation.
Income records
- Bank and interest income: complete bank statements, interest certificates and deposit records for the FY 2025-26 period.
- Dividends and other-source income: dividend statements, payer statements and records for any taxable receipts that do not fit another head.
- House property: rent receipts, lease details, municipal-tax or other permitted expense records, and interest statements for property borrowing where relevant.
- Capital gains: broker capital-gain statements, contract notes, purchase and sale dates, cost records, corporate-action details and evidence for transactions in shares, securities, property or other capital assets.
- Business or profession: books or ledgers where maintained, invoices, expense evidence, inventory records, asset registers and details needed for depreciation or presumptive-income reporting.
- Agricultural and other income: records supporting the amount and character of income where the selected form asks for it.
Tax-credit and reported-information records
- Download the HUF’s AIS and inspect every reported receipt, tax payment and transaction.
- Download Form 26AS to review TDS and TCS credits.
- Obtain Form 16A for non-salary TDS where the payer issues it.
- Compare AIS, 26AS and certificates with the HUF’s own bank, broker, payer and accounting records. Keep explanations for differences, including income reported in a different period or a credit belonging to another PAN.
The department describes AIS as containing TDS and TCS, specified financial transaction (SFT) information, tax payments, demand and refund information and other reported data. Form 26AS provides TDS and TCS information. Neither statement replaces the HUF’s own books and source documents.

Evidence for deductions and exemptions
For each deduction or exemption actually claimed, retain the relevant payment receipt, investment record, interest certificate or other supporting evidence. Availability depends on the HUF’s income, the applicable provision and the tax regime. A deduction displayed in a form is not automatically available merely because the field exists.
Rank #3
Foreign income and foreign-tax credit
If the HUF has foreign income or seeks credit for tax paid overseas, assemble income statements, jurisdiction-wise tax-payment evidence and the details required for Form 67. Check the form’s timing and disclosure fields before filing; foreign assets or income can also disqualify an otherwise contemplated ITR-4 filing.
Audit and transfer-pricing records
- For a section 44AB audit case, obtain the accountant’s report and particulars for Form 3CB-3CD.
- For covered international transactions or specified domestic transactions, obtain Form 3CEB and the underlying agreements, invoices and computation records.
- Confirm that any report is filed by the applicable report deadline, which the department describes as one month before the relevant section 139(1) return due date.
Do you upload proofs with the ITR?
Generally, no. Income-tax returns are annexure-less. The department’s ITR-2 FAQ says supporting papers such as investment proofs and TDS certificates are not attached to the return. Keep them organized and retrievable because the department may request them during assessment or an inquiry.
Rank #4
“Do not attach” does not mean “do not prepare.” A claim that cannot be supported when questioned is a filing risk, especially where AIS, 26AS, bank records or broker statements show a different figure.
How to reconcile AIS and Form 26AS before filing
- Download both statements for the HUF PAN. Use the latest available versions before finalizing the return.
- Mark every item as matched, corrected or unexplained. Match receipts to bank credits, broker statements, invoices or property records.
- Check tax credits separately. Compare each TDS or TCS entry and payment with the payer certificate and the amount claimed in the return.
- Investigate omissions and duplicates. Ask the payer or reporting entity to correct an error where necessary; do not claim a credit solely because an entry appears without confirming that it belongs to the HUF.
- Recompute the schedules. Update income, tax and interest figures after resolving differences, then save the reconciliation with the source records.
Deadlines for AY 2026-27
The exact section 139(1) due date depends on the HUF’s category. The latest departmental notice identified for AY 2026-27, issued on 29 September 2026, says Circular No. 07/2026 dated 28 September 2026 extended the deadline for specified audit-category cases from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026. For those same cases, the audit-report deadline moved from 30 September 2026 to 21 October 2026.

- Helpful in various ways
| Item | Date described in the September 2026 notice | Who should use it |
|---|---|---|
| Return filing | 21 November 2026, extended from 31 October 2026 | Only cases covered by the specified audit-category extension. |
| Audit report | 21 October 2026, extended from 30 September 2026 | The same covered audit-category cases, where an audit report is required. |
| Other HUF categories | Not established by that notice | Verify the current section 139(1) deadline for the HUF’s form and facts. |
Do not transfer 21 November to a non-audit HUF without checking the governing notification. Similarly, a Form 3CB-3CD or Form 3CEB deadline must be calculated from the applicable return due date, not from the date another HUF files.

The Income Tax Department describes the new regime under section 115BAC as the default for an HUF. A non-business HUF can generally choose to change regime directly in the return each year, provided the return is filed by the section 139(1) deadline. Business-income cases may have additional election or procedural conditions, so use the current form instructions before submission.

- gross income under each head;
- deductions and exemptions actually available to the HUF under each regime;
- taxable income, surcharge and cess;
- tax credits, advance tax, TDS and TCS; and
- the filing deadline for exercising or preserving the choice.
An individual coparcener’s regime choice does not control the HUF’s return. The HUF is a separate taxpayer for this decision.
Quick Recap
A filing workflow that reduces omissions
- Set the period and entity: confirm FY 2025-26 income, AY 2026-27, HUF PAN and bank details.
- Inventory income: list every receipt and assign it to the correct head.
- Determine the form: apply the ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 tests, including residence, ₹50 lakh ceiling and exclusions.
- Assemble evidence: gather statements, books, certificates and claim proofs relevant to those heads.
- Reconcile external data: clear AIS and 26AS differences before entering credits.
- Check conditional forms: identify audit, Form 3CEB and Form 67 requirements.
- Compare regimes: compute both available outcomes using HUF-specific deductions and exemptions.
- Complete and validate: use the AY 2026-27 utility, review schedules, verify bank details and complete the prescribed verification.
- File by the correct category deadline: rely on an extension only when the notice expressly covers the HUF.
- Store the evidence set: retain the reconciliation, computation and source documents for any later departmental request.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
- Choosing a form by income amount alone: business income and ITR-4 exclusions matter as much as the total.
- Using ITR-1: an HUF must use the HUF-eligible forms identified by the department.
- Claiming every AIS entry: verify ownership, period and nature before reporting it.
- Ignoring a missing 26AS credit: reconcile with the payer and certificate instead of claiming an unsupported amount.
- Uploading a proof bundle: returns are annexure-less; retain evidence rather than attaching it routinely.
- Assuming the audit extension is universal: the 21 November 2026 date is limited to specified audit-category cases.
- Letting a family member’s regime choice decide: compare the HUF’s own deductions and tax computation.
- Forgetting conditional reports: audit, transfer-pricing and foreign-tax-credit forms each have separate applicability and timing tests.
