Working after you claim Social Security can change your payments in four separate ways: the earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits before full retirement age; new earnings may improve the 35-year benefit calculation; your claiming age determines the basic monthly amount; and wages can increase the share of benefits included in federal taxable income. Covered work generally remains subject to Social Security payroll tax even after full retirement age.
The outcome depends on your birth date, full retirement age, earnings record, type and timing of earnings, benefit start date, filing status, and other income. The dollar limits below use Social Security Administration rules for 2026 and Internal Revenue Service rules for tax year 2025; those figures change.

The four rules you need to keep separate
| Question | Rule | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Will working reduce a check? | The retirement earnings test can withhold benefits from people receiving retirement benefits who are below full retirement age. | Only for earnings before the month full retirement age is reached. |
| Can more work raise the benefit? | SSA uses the highest 35 years of indexed earnings. A new high year can replace a lower or zero year. | Any age, when the new year improves the earnings record. |
| Does claiming later increase the amount? | Claiming before full retirement age permanently reduces the base amount; delaying after full retirement age earns delayed retirement credits through age 70. | The filing decision, independent of whether you keep working. |
| Will wages make benefits taxable? | Federal taxability uses one-half of benefits plus other income, including tax-exempt interest, compared with filing-status thresholds. | For the tax return for each year. |
These rules can apply at the same time. For example, a worker may have some checks withheld under the earnings test, earn enough to replace a low year in the 35-year record, and have more benefits included in taxable income because wages raise total income.

Will working after I claim Social Security reduce my check?
If you receive retirement benefits before full retirement age, SSA applies an annual earnings test to wages and net earnings from self-employment. The test is not a general tax. It determines how much of your scheduled benefit is withheld when counted earnings exceed that year’s limit.
2026 earnings-test amounts
| Your situation in 2026 | Exempt amount | Withholding formula |
|---|---|---|
| Under full retirement age for all of 2026 | $24,480 | $1 withheld for every $2 above $24,480 |
| Reach full retirement age during 2026 | $65,160, counting earnings before the month you reach full retirement age | $1 withheld for every $3 above $65,160 |
| Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age | No earnings-test limit | Earnings no longer reduce retirement benefits |
Full retirement age is tied to your birth year, so the correct age and limit cannot be determined from your current age alone. The higher 2026 limit applies only in the calendar year you attain full retirement age and only to earnings before that month. Starting with that month, working more does not trigger earnings-test withholding.
What income counts
For this test, SSA counts wages from employment and net earnings from self-employment. Bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay count as earnings. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, and other government or military retirement benefits do not count for the retirement earnings test. Work outside the United States can follow different rules.
Illustrative withholding calculations
Suppose a beneficiary remains below full retirement age throughout 2026 and has $40,000 of counted wages. The excess over $24,480 is $15,520; the statutory reduction is $7,760 ($15,520 divided by 2). SSA determines how that reduction is scheduled against monthly payments, so the arithmetic does not promise that exactly 12 equal amounts will be withheld.
Someone who reaches full retirement age in 2026 and earns $75,000 before the applicable month has $9,840 over the $65,160 limit. The formula produces a $3,280 reduction ($9,840 divided by 3). Earnings after the full-retirement-age month are not included in that year’s earnings-test calculation.

The special monthly rule in a first year
If you start benefits partway through a calendar year, a special monthly rule may let SSA pay a whole month in which it considers you retired, even when your earlier annual earnings exceed the limit. This is designed for particular first-year situations; it does not replace the annual test in later years. Report your actual start date and expected earnings to SSA and use its current special-rule guidance for the details.
Withheld payments are not simply lost
At full retirement age, SSA recalculates your monthly benefit to account for months in which payments were reduced or withheld because of excess earnings. That is a benefit adjustment, not an automatic refund of every withheld dollar as a lump-sum payment. The timing and amount of the adjustment depend on your record and the months affected.

Does working longer increase the Social Security benefit calculation?
Often, but only when the added year improves your earnings record. SSA bases retirement benefits on your highest 35 years of earnings, after the program’s wage indexing. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, zero years enter the calculation. A new year with earnings higher than one of your existing low years can replace that low year and raise the resulting monthly benefit.
When an extra year helps
- You have fewer than 35 years of covered earnings, so an additional year replaces a zero.
- You already have 35 years, but the new year’s indexed earnings exceed one of the years currently in the calculation.
- Your earnings record contains an error and newly reported wages correct it.
An extra year does not automatically raise benefits merely because you worked. If the new earnings are below all 35 years already counted, the formula may not change. SSA reviews reported earnings records, and a qualifying increase is reflected in the benefit calculation. Keep wage statements and self-employment records and check your earnings history for missing or incorrect years.
This 35-year effect is separate from both the earnings test and delayed retirement credits. A person can benefit from a higher earnings record while claiming at the same age, or delay claiming without adding a higher-earning work year.

Why claiming age and stopping work are different decisions
You can stop working and delay filing, keep working and delay filing, or claim benefits while continuing to work. Stopping work does not itself create delayed retirement credits, and continuing to work does not force you to claim.

Starting retirement benefits before full retirement age reduces the monthly amount based on the number of months claimed early. The reduction generally remains part of the benefit calculation. If you also work before full retirement age, the earnings test may withhold payments in addition to that early-claiming reduction.
Claiming at full retirement age
At full retirement age, the earnings test stops reducing benefits. Your full-retirement-age amount is the reference point for comparing an earlier claim with a later one, although your personal estimate also reflects your earnings record and other adjustments.
Delaying after full retirement age
Delaying a claim after full retirement age earns delayed retirement credits until age 70. Waiting beyond 70 does not add further delayed-credit increases. You need your own SSA estimate, expected longevity, cash-flow needs, spouse or survivor considerations, and tax situation to evaluate the trade-off; there is no universal best age.
Will my wages make my Social Security taxable?
Federal taxation uses a different test from the earnings test. For tax year 2025, IRS Publication 915 starts with one-half of your Social Security benefits and adds other income, including tax-exempt interest. The result is compared with a base amount for your filing status.

2025 base amounts and higher thresholds
| Filing situation | Base amount | Higher level at which up to 85% may be included |
|---|---|---|
| Single, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse | $25,000 | $34,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $32,000 | $44,000 |
| Married filing separately, lived apart from spouse for the entire year | $25,000 | Use the IRS worksheet for the applicable calculation |
| Married filing separately, lived with spouse at any time during the year | $0 | Use the IRS worksheet; special rules apply |
Crossing a base amount does not make all benefits taxable. It begins the IRS calculation that determines the includable portion. At the higher levels shown above, as much as 85% of benefits may be included in taxable income, subject to the worksheet and special rules. “85% taxable” means up to 85% of the benefit is included in income; it is not an 85% tax rate. Your actual tax depends on the rest of your return, deductions, credits, and applicable tax rates.
How continued work changes the calculation
Wages and net self-employment income are other income for this purpose. They can push the one-half-benefits-plus-other-income figure above a base amount even when no payment is withheld under the earnings test. Conversely, a person could have earnings-test withholding before full retirement age but owe little or no federal income tax on benefits, depending on total income and filing status.
For an illustration, a single filer receiving $24,000 in benefits, earning $20,000 in wages, and receiving $1,000 of tax-exempt interest starts with $12,000 (half the benefits) plus $21,000 of other income, or $33,000. That is above the $25,000 base but below the $34,000 higher level; the exact taxable portion must be computed with the IRS worksheet rather than guessed from the difference.
Use Publication 915 for tax year 2025 and the current-year Form 1040 instructions for the return you are preparing. Do not carry a prior year’s threshold into a later return without checking the year’s publication.
Do you still pay Social Security tax after full retirement age?
Generally, yes. SSA says workers in covered employment or self-employment pay Social Security taxes regardless of age or whether they are already receiving benefits, subject to narrow exceptions. Payroll tax withholding from a paycheck and self-employment tax are separate from the retirement earnings test.

Reaching full retirement age ends earnings-test reductions beginning with that month; it does not generally end Social Security payroll-tax obligations on covered work. Medicare payroll-tax rules are separate and are outside this explanation.
Claim now while working or keep working and delay?
Compare the choices using the same personal inputs rather than a slogan about working longer.
| Decision factor | Claim now while working | Keep working and delay claiming |
|---|---|---|
| Full retirement age and SSA estimate | Benefits may start sooner, but an early claim can reduce the monthly amount. | No retirement checks yet, but the eventual amount can include delayed retirement credits through age 70. |
| Expected wages or net self-employment income | Before full retirement age, earnings-test withholding may apply above the annual limit. | No earnings-test withholding because benefits have not started; wages still affect taxes and payroll-tax obligations. |
| 35-year earnings record | New high years may raise the benefit while you receive it. | New high years may raise the eventual benefit; low or zero years can be replaced. |
| Tax filing status and other income | Benefits plus wages may increase the taxable portion under IRS rules. | Wages still affect your tax return; there are no Social Security benefits to include until filing begins. |
| Cash-flow needs and longevity | Earlier income may be valuable if you need it now. | Requires using other resources while waiting, in exchange for a larger monthly benefit later. |
Neither column is automatically superior. A useful comparison uses your exact birth date and full retirement age, current SSA estimate, expected annual wages or self-employment income, likely replacement of low earnings years, intended claiming age, filing status, and other income.
A practical checklist before you change work or filing plans
- Confirm your full retirement age. Use your birth date and SSA’s retirement estimate rather than an age remembered from someone else’s situation.
- Separate earnings types. Estimate wages and net self-employment income for the earnings test; list pensions, investments, interest, and other income separately for tax planning.
- Project the calendar year correctly. If you reach full retirement age during 2026, identify earnings before that month; do not apply the $65,160 figure to the entire year without that timing limit.
- Check your 35-year record. Look for zero years, low years likely to be replaced, and missing wages. Retain documentation for corrections.
- Run the tax calculation for the right year. Apply the IRS worksheet for your filing status, including tax-exempt interest and all other income. The 2025 thresholds are not 2026 earnings-test limits.
- Report changed expectations. If your expected earnings differ from what you previously reported, notify SSA so withholding can be adjusted.
- Review the result after full retirement age. SSA’s recalculation for months affected by the earnings test may change the monthly amount; check the notice rather than assuming a lump-sum repayment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling earnings-test withholding a permanent loss. It is accounted for in a later benefit adjustment.
- Assuming full retirement age ends payroll taxes. Covered work generally remains taxable for Social Security.
- Using investment income or a pension in the earnings test. Those items generally do not count there, although they can matter for federal income-tax calculations.
- Treating the $25,000, $32,000, $34,000, and $44,000 figures as tax brackets. They are thresholds used in the Social Security benefits worksheet.
- Interpreting “up to 85% included” as an 85% tax rate.
- Applying annual earnings limits without considering the month full retirement age is reached or the special first-year monthly rule.
- Assuming every additional work year raises benefits. It must replace a lower or zero year in the highest-35 calculation.
What this explanation does not cover
These rules concern U.S. Social Security retirement benefits and federal income tax. Disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income, work outside the United States, special employment systems, state income taxes, Medicare premium effects, and individualized tax advice require separate analysis. For a personal decision, use the current SSA tools and notices together with the IRS publication and current Form 1040 instructions for the relevant tax year.
Bottom line
Working longer can produce a larger eventual Social Security benefit, but through distinct mechanisms: earnings-test withholding may affect checks before full retirement age, a high new earnings year can improve the 35-year formula, delaying a claim can add credits through age 70, and wages can make more benefits federally taxable. Check each rule separately using your age, earnings timing, record, filing status, and tax-year guidance.
