What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Buy health insurance before trying to conceive, disclose every PCOD/PCOS diagnosis and treatment detail, and obtain the insurer’s underwriting decision in writing. The policy must be assessed on its actual waiting periods, maternity and newborn limits, exclusions, cost sharing, hospital network and continuity rules—not on a “maternity cover” label.
Disclose PCOD/PCOS before the insurer assesses your application
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) states in its health-department consumer guidance: “You need to disclose details of all pre-existing health problems.” That includes a PCOD/PCOS diagnosis, consultations, prescribed tablets, tests, treatment recommendations and follow-up history, even if symptoms are controlled and you are not currently seeking fertility treatment.

Under the standardization definition cited by IRDAI, a condition diagnosed, medically advised or treated during the applicable look-back period can be treated as a pre-existing disease. Concealment can lead to a claim dispute, rejection or cancellation. Use the proposal form’s medical-history section and attach additional information if its space is insufficient.
Ask the insurer to record its decision in writing. PCOD/PCOS may be accepted on ordinary terms, accepted with an additional premium (a loading), excluded, or covered after a specified waiting period. There is no regulator-published nationwide premium increase that applies to every woman with PCOD/PCOS; the outcome depends on the insurer’s underwriting and the policy wording.

Check whether pregnancy is an insured benefit at all
IRDAI policyholder guidance says treatment relating to pregnancy or childbirth, including a caesarean section, is generally excluded unless the product provides that benefit. A policy can therefore cover hospitalisation while excluding delivery. Confirm that maternity is an included benefit in the schedule and Customer Information Sheet (CIS), rather than an exclusion or an optional feature you have not purchased.
Read the wording for each part of a planned pregnancy:

- Compact for travelling
- Normal delivery and caesarean-section limits.
- Treatment of pregnancy complications.
- Newborn cover, including when it starts and whether it has a separate sub-limit.
- Prenatal and postnatal expenses.
- Infertility treatment, assisted conception and IVF. These are contract-specific; do not assume that maternity cover includes them.
Match waiting periods to your family-planning timeline
Do not rely on an agent’s verbal estimate. The policy schedule and full wording determine when a claim can be made. IRDAI materials accessed in 2026 contain two relevant limits: its standardization FAQ cites 48 months as the maximum pre-existing-disease waiting period, while a separate health-department FAQ states a 36-month maximum waiting period. Ask the insurer which rule and policy version apply to your product and have the answer confirmed in writing.
IRDAI policyholder guidance also describes a general initial waiting period of 30 days, subject to the contract’s exceptions. Maternity waiting periods are separate and can be longer. Historical documents illustrate the variation, but they are not current market offers:

| Archived wording | Illustrated maternity condition | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|
| The New India Assurance Company Limited, Standard Group Janata Mediclaim Policy (2012 archive) | Nine-month maternity waiting period; benefit limited to the first two children | Shows that a short maternity wait can still have a child-count restriction. |
| CignaTTK ProHealth policy (2012 archive) | 48 months of continuous cover, with a possible 24-month reduced-waiting option | Shows why the exact product wording and any reduction option must be checked. |
Calculate the date on which the maternity waiting period ends against your intended conception timeline. Buying after conception, or allowing the policy to lapse before the wait ends, can defeat the purpose of the cover.
Compare the contract on the terms that affect a delivery claim
| Comparison point | What to verify before paying |
|---|---|
| PCOD/PCOS underwriting | Whether the condition is accepted, loaded, excluded or assigned a disease-specific wait; obtain the decision in writing. |
| Pre-existing-disease waiting period | The exact duration, start date, conditions for credit and any disease-specific wording. |
| Maternity waiting period | When the clock starts, whether continuous renewal is required and whether there are child-count restrictions. |
| Maternity, newborn and complication limits | Separate sub-limits for normal delivery, caesarean section, complications, newborn treatment and prenatal or postnatal care. |
| Fertility and infertility treatment | Whether evaluation, medicines, assisted reproduction or IVF are excluded, limited or covered only under a named benefit. |
| Room rent, ICU and cost sharing | Room-rent and ICU caps, co-payment, deductibles and how a room cap can affect the rest of the hospital bill. |
| Hospital network | Whether the hospital and obstetrician you intend to use are in-network in your city, and how cashless authorisation works. |
| Portability and continuity | Which pre-existing-disease and specific waiting-period credits transfer if you switch insurers, and the notice deadline for porting. |
| Claim documents | The CIS, schedule and wording’s required records, and whether the insurer requires prior authorisation or additional medical evidence. |
Read the CIS, schedule, endorsements and complete policy wording together. Marketing material cannot override an exclusion, sub-limit or waiting-period clause in the contract.

Use a documented purchase process
- Build a complete medical timeline. List every PCOD/PCOS diagnosis, consultation, medicine, test and treatment recommendation.
- Complete the proposal accurately. Keep copies of the submitted form and all attachments.
- Request written underwriting terms. Ask whether PCOD/PCOS is accepted, loaded, excluded or subject to a waiting period, and retain the insurer’s reply.
- Confirm the benefit structure. Verify that maternity is included and check delivery, caesarean, complication, newborn and prenatal/postnatal limits.
- Test the timing. Put the policy start date and maternity-wait end date on a calendar against your intended conception plan.
- Check practical access. Confirm the preferred maternity hospital is in-network and understand room-rent, ICU, co-payment and deductible rules.
- Save the final documents. Keep the issued policy, CIS, schedule, endorsements, underwriting correspondence and payment receipt in one place.
Preserve continuity, portability and the moratorium protection
Renew on time and avoid a break. IRDAI describes portability as transferring eligible credits for pre-existing-disease and specified waiting periods when you move to another insurer. Those credits depend on the policies and limits involved; ask the new insurer to confirm exactly what it will recognise before the renewal deadline.
IRDAI health-department guidance states that after 60 continuous months, claims generally cannot be contested for non-disclosure or misrepresentation, except where established fraud is involved. This moratorium is a reason to maintain uninterrupted cover, not a reason to omit information when applying.

- Helpful in various ways
If the policy no longer fits your planned hospital, maternity limits or timing, investigate portability well before renewal. A new policy can impose its own underwriting and benefit conditions unless eligible continuity credits are transferred under the applicable rules.
Answering the common cost and coverage questions
Will PCOD make the premium higher?
It may, but it may also result in ordinary acceptance, an exclusion or a waiting period. Only the insurer’s written underwriting decision establishes the outcome for your application.
Will a policy cover pregnancy if I already have PCOS?
Not automatically. Pregnancy and childbirth are generally excluded unless the product includes maternity, and the maternity and pre-existing-disease waits must both be satisfied.

Yes. Medication and medical advice are part of the history the proposal asks you to disclose.
Can I port without restarting a waiting period?
Eligible credits for pre-existing-disease and specified waits can transfer under portability, but the receiving insurer and policy terms control the credited duration. Obtain confirmation before switching.
